I demonstrate a few different methods to safely handle and restrain your cat if you need to work on him for any reason. Medical, grooming, etc. Rabbits can be restrained in the scruff hold and the towel method also. They also become stressed easily, maybe even more so, Please keep an eye on their stress levels at all times
That's the calmest barn cat I've ever seen in my life!
Right!!!! Barn cat USUALLY means feral and this one is far from wild! I have one 12 year old feral cat who stays at LEAST 5 feet from me, even when I'm putting their food down. I'm concerned that I may not be able to trap her if she ever HAS to go to the vet So far, she hasn't been to the vet since the original spay and release when she was a baby!
Maybe lightly sedated 🤔🤔
He lived in my barn till he got old. No sedation at all, too bad most cats aren’t like he was
I came here to say this... my tortie wont even let me do any of these techniques whatsoever lol! 😂
Calmest barn cat suggested the idea for the video herself 🤣
This is an extremely compliant cat. My cat who doesn't like to be touched would have been a whirling dervish about 5 seconds in lol.
My 10-month-cat would be thrashing, biting, and scratching. I don't there is any way to groom his bottom except to take him to my vet and have him sedated. He doesn't even like to be petted or picked up: he'll fight back.
arthistoryliterature that’s how my cat is. She gets very anxious while grooming and tries to run away.. and bite me and scratch me. Can’t figure out how to brush her. How do you manage? Any tricks that you can share?
You prob have ur answer by now since it's been a while but for anyone else looking for tips.. using the scruff method u can literally do any grooming you need to. I always kind of "sneak" up on my orange female tabby or else she will hide all day if she sees me coming at her lol just pet the head and grab them quickly. Slowly lift the head till the front paws are off the ground or table. You can then do whatever grooming u need to and they won't fight back when scruffed. Hope it helps someone!!
LOL he is so cute. I love his little teeth poking out like he’s a vampire 🤣
I would be in the emergency room if I did my daughter's cat like that. I can't believe that is a barn cat
Is that cat dead? Ours would have destroyed my arms and whoever is helping me. Good job, nice kitty.
+D Chester Whoever owns this cat did a great job. Cats that scratch and bite see humans as inferior or equal to them and were raised improperly.
+Ed Lorentson what..? inferior? what.. only ANIMALS LIKE HUMANS THING LIKE THAT.
Mmm, just remember some of us are giving homes to those cats who were raised improperly.
Dude, chill. My comment was to Ed, not you. My cat would have done the same as yours!
D Chester I can shave my cat by my self! He doesn't bite me! I bathe him, groom him, cut his nail and blow dry him by my self! I don't use a muzzle or anything in that nature
That cat deserves an Oscar for good behavior
It HAS to be sedated. It’s not crying or anything. My cats are relatively calm but there’s ZERO chance they’d last through all this demonstration.
Omg you don’t know how stressed I was about my cat’s matting and I thought we needed to sedate him because he gets so scared but we did this today and OMG IT WORKED!! Thank you so much 🥰 You saved us so much headache and stress. Thank you!!
he really trusts you
+ilgi genc He now sleeps next to or God forbid, on me every night LOL
+PetPrepper lucccccccky yooooooou , such a handsome prince.
This cat is a paid actor
😂😂😂dying
that is a beautiful and well-behaved cat.
That Cat is so docile. Dont know how he stayed so calm. Through all that handling. Good job.
Thank you, he was a weird calm one, he ended up being a house cat in his later years
I am so glad. Some people thing this video was mean, but if it is something that NEEDS to be done....everyone needs to be safe.Thank you for your comment
Beautiful boy and somewhat co-operative. Excellent and practical advice, thank you. Glad to see you demonstrate the varies moves along with the predicted cat emotions and reactions to the restraints. Again, thank you.
Wow! For a barn cat who doesn't like to be touched or looked at, he handled that very well! He's very beautiful, too! Good job, good demonstration. He seems to be quite relaxed by the way you handle him. Impressive to say the least!
Thank you, people are either lovers or haters watching professionals handle cats. Thanks for not being a hater lol
He has such cute little fangs!!!!!!!!
You are a good person for doing this. Good luck. Thank you for watching, it means a lot
Not in any offending way cause I know cats are a nightmare to groom, but I laughed so hard at the look of Johnny cash...it's like its thinking "I will vomit in your shoes" my cat has done that to me days after a grooming
I hope JC got a treat when that was over he earned it!! My kitties are in love with Temptations it’s like kitty crack to them they were instantly hooked :)
"Barn cat?!?" Was it sedated?
Melinda McCradyNot at all, why?
oh my gawwd! that cat is saying "b--just wait after you finish this video! you will be wearing the muzzle!"
Excellent tips! It's refreshing to see how much care you take to be gentle as to not cause trauma and stress to the cat. Though my husband and I know about the panting in cats (not the same as panting in dogs) and what it indicates, because we rescue ferals, I'm very happy to see that you mention this. As well, you mention the signs of stress by checking the gums - very important and something new I've just learned from you! I can't stand to see "groomers" wrestling with cats, and terrorizing them into submission. I've been looking for tips because we have a rescue named Stephen who has long, super thick hair that is starting to mat. Once he decided he trusted us enough to make us "his people", we had him neutered and our vet shaved out all his mats at the same time, as his fur was in a terrible state - not just terribly matted in spots, but missing fur in other areas and burs caught deep against his skin as well. Though Stephen is now very receptive to our affection and to being scratched and pet with our hands, he is fearful of being brushed, no matter the type of brush of comb we have tried. We need to look after his fur but don't want to traumatize him. Your video has been very helpful and informative. Thank you very much.
Your cat is so responsive to the different techniques. I tried multiple different ways you suggested on my cat, but all he does is wriggle about and claw. I always feel bad when trying to groom him since he's a long haired Persian and hates his fur being touched.
He is a good cat!
He’s so compliant! Wow!
That's one gorgeous looking cat :)
If I can add a observation .. scruff holding a cat on a work bench seems to be functional. A large cat will defintely feel pain if you were to lift him from the ground by the neck. My cat was varied between 22 at the heaviest down to 15 for the average. Farmer neighbor proved that cats remember for a very long time. At his heaviest the guy picked him up by the scruff and for more than 10 years afterward my cat would not get within arm reach of him
+Randy J Thanks Randy, we never pick up a large cat by the scruff without supporting it's weight completely
The weight is not the issue, picking the cat up that way is... Jesus.... It's to hold him down, to calm him down, not to pick him up...........
Honestly glad to hear someone say this. My boyfriend constantly picks up my adult cat by his scruff and it makes me really upset. I've begged him not to its MY cat but he is one of those stubborn dicks that thinks it's ok. They have some kinda natural instinct/function when they are young that when picked up by their scruff their bodies go LIMP,.this is so mama cat can transport them easily in emergencies in the wild and whatnot, they lose that instinct/ability as they grow up which tells me we should stop doing it 🫠 at the very least you have to support their rear/bums when you do it 😢
@@sj_milk_ Get rid of the boyfriend. You are correct, adult cats should never be lifted by the scruff of their neck. Never.
@@sj_milk_ yeesh hope your next boyfriend is better
That cat is so pissed 😂😂his face says it all
Thank you this is an excellent video. I am planning to bathe my one year old cat for the first time so I will defiantly be using some of these.
Thank you for this. I recently acquired a little "indoor / outdoor" kitten, who turned out to be an emaciated, terrified little wildcat that my landlord is convinced has been abused by males. She has come a very long way in a short amount of time, and quickly became the size of a full grown cat, but she has mats on her upper, inside thighs. She handled having her nails clipped very well, especially once she realized there were treats involved. And I will try the "leg' hold you demonstrated, but do you have any other suggestions? I'm quite new to kitty 'parenting'. Thanks again.
That was so helpful. Thank you so much!
Thank you for this - very helpful!
Awesome handling. Very informative. Patient cat. Can't help wishing there was a version of this with cat subtitles
Lol wouldn't that be great and so helpful!! Even if we just had a way of relaying one message to them!! Like "don't worry, im not killing you" 😅
Thanks for the tips! This video cracked me up so much. What a cute guy
big beautiful kitty, reminds me of my first cat. he is much calmer than the cat i adopted from the streets though. amazing how compliant he is with you. ill be trying your methods for my next grooming sesh
Thanks so much for the info, it really helped me a lot, great video
Thank you so much!..Great tutorial!
That Kitty is on some PRIMO Catnip!
That cat is very special ...so calm BEAUUUUTIFUL
How on earth is that cat SO CALM!!!!!
My cat had to be sedated and get a lion cut! I ran a cat rescue for many years and scruffed, bathed, medicated, etc. many cats! Both my husband and I scruffed and covered with a towel and he twisted his body and pulled his legs up over his head to scratch and bite.
Excellent, thanks for the tips.🐈⬛
What drugs is this cat on to be this calm? LOL
So glad I found this! That cat acted like a couple of my skittish cats did for a certain veterinarian, they had perfect behavior for her but not for me. You must be a cat whisperer like that.
awsome tips i have a 6 month old kitty that gets crazy whenever i try to groom her this has helped big time thank u :)
Awesome, best video out there. Thank you!!
And thank you so much. People who get it....get it, others are all up in my hair about treating the cat bad
Oh my God Johnny cash, I love him! He looks so chill. So pretty, what a great cat. He clearly trusts you. Had great tips thank you, I'll let you know how it goes if I survive.
Great advices, thanks!!! Going to try them with my cat for nail clipping. Thanks!!!
Thx for the tips!
awesome vid...very important stuff! loved it..
I had to wrap my ollie up using your method and I really appreciate the video. He had horrible mats that were causing him pain
Hi, thank you for this useful video. I've recently discovered some matted hair on my cat's chest and wasn't sure how to hold her while using the clippers. The vets would sedate her straight away and I didn't want that. No cat groomers around. Tried a few of your tips and it worked. Many thanks!
I'm so glad it helped, thank you
Thank you so much for the tips!! I have a Persian kitten...he’s about 8 months old...that we found as a stray & when we found him he was so badly matted we thought he was a girl!! When we took him in to be spayed...because we thought he was a girl...we found out that he was a boy when my sister went to pick him up!! Anyway...they shaved off the matts while he was under anesthesia & I’ve bravely been brushing him since...Olof HATES to be brushed but he tolerates it somewhat. As it turns out...he has a couple good sized knots & last weekend I was able to successfully get one off using my brothers old electric shaver...a small version of what you use to cut a mans hair. That one was old & needed to be replaced...so I bought a new one & attempted to continue cut the rest of Olies knots...& the little booger bit my finger so bad that I have no skin along the side of my nail...I’m fine & taking care of it. I want to take him in to have him professionally done...but there aren’t any cat groomers in my area...I think after my finger heals I’m going to try a couple of your tips...& hopefully get the last of the remaining knots off of him!! Just earlier today I thought about wrapping him in a towel...but it won’t work due to where the new knots are...they’re under his chin/neck/chest area...& I believe that holding him by the scruff is definitely going to have to work...my nephew helps me with him!! I’ll let you know how it turns out!! Fingers crossed!!!!
That was really helpful thank you
I have a nylon mesh laundry bag that will close around the neck area. It wraps the cat up like your towel so they stay wrapped up and still. Then you can wash the cat wit your regular water and pet shampoo and conditioner if that is part of the routine. The nylon will allow your water and soap thru and you can do your scrubbing and even the initial towel dry with the bag on. Once you let the cat out of the bag he is usually gone so be prepared to keep a hold on him at that point. The bag will probably work ona small dog also if they wont stay still. My cat became geriatric and couldnt completely self groom anymore. So he started to develop matts. Shampoos and conditioners helped loosed the knots so that I could brush him out . He was somewhere between 19 and 22 at the end. So he had a good run for a cat.
+Randy J I would never put a matted cat in the tub, the matts NEED to be removed prior to the bathing for so many reasons
Randy J i
If you bathe a matted cat/dog you’re only going to make the matts worse...think of dreadlocks!! I’m in the process of removing my kittens matts before I bathe him!! He’s a Persian & HATES to be brushed...but tolerates it better than the clippers!! He bit my finger pretty good yesterday while I was working on his matts...one is partially off & I’m going to use some of the tips in this video to finish as soon as my finger heals a little!!
I have a cat "hammock" that I sometimes use on my female orange tabby. Once she in it I hang her by hooks from the shower rod and it's so easy to do her nails and ears this way since she's completely off any surface and hanging in the air, she has no way of getting enough purchase or momentum to try to escape!!
Johnny was the most dócil, cooperative demonstrative barn cat ever! He played dead as you rolled him left, right, up, down, and sideways! He even allowed you to make him into a mummy cat without a meow! JohhnyCash cat was pawsome!!
the calmest cat ever
Beautiful cat🐱 and with a catchy iconic name JOHNNY CASH 🎸 How sweet😍😚
For a cat who doesn't like being touched, held or looked at - "Johnny Cash" obviously loves (& trusts) you very much. :-) Light tapping between the eyes - I'd never heard that before - I'll definitely give it a try! I love the video's ending. "...so these are handling techniques, and this is Johnny Cash," and Johnny's like - *_"Yeah - I'm outta here..."_*
Pet prepped what an awesome video!! You explained so much in such a small amount of time!! All ur tips are extremely helpful. I was a groomer in Florida for 8 years and I was the only one at my shop that would work on cats! Lol I've used these techniques myself for years! U mentioned some people making negative comments..I just want to tell u, they obviously have no idea what they are doing or talking about. Ignore them, please!! You are here making videos trying to HELP people which in turn will help the cats by avoiding other things that will over stress cats and could lead to disaster. All ur tips are safe if done correctly. Keep up the great work and ignore those haters. *whispers* they are idiots* 😉
Thank you. The haters don’t bother me, but your words were amazing. ❤️
that kitty looks so goofy!!! i love him!!!
Very helpful video.....thank you!
Very cool video. He looks like a puppet in your hands :)
lol. your bad cat was very good. lol I have been doing kitties for about 13 years. do you ever do the scruff and hold the tail at the same time with the same hand ? or, holding a front paw up to the side of his head with the scruff hand to do under his arms? you seem to be very good at handling them :)
Never tried the tail and scruff. I do use the scruff and front foot method quite often. Works well. Thanks. Keep up the good work, there are some groomers out there, that won't even touch a cat
lol. more for us :) hold the tail at a bit of an angle , while holding the kitty's head back a little further than usual. im sure you can tell if the cat is comfortable with this. some are not, but it can be helpful sometimes :) thanks for the vid, also. its good to watch someone else's styles now and then
carl hawkins Right on
only if the cat is ok with this, of course. im sure YOU know, but if anyone reads this, I should add that. also, you cant do that with older kitties.
What a Well behaved gentlemen!
Hey petprepper thanks for the video it really helped. I am going for my CFMG in a few months. Do these techniques typically work with AGGRESIVE cats? (im talking the worst of the worst) Do you typically ask for the them to be sedated?
do you ever use a cat grooming bag to restrain them? It seems legit
Yes they work with aggressive cats, it takes training to become secure and confident which is especially important for the other people you are working with. Some need to be sedated yes. I have never used the bag as it would get in the way of the grooming process
In what cases do you request sedation?
When the cat is in danger of hurting them self or they are so uncontrollable we don't feel safe
Thank you for this video it's so helpful 👍
Glad it was helpful!
hahaha...in the towel,he seems like E.T.!!!!!Impressive the way he is calm!!!!
Look at his little teeth sticking out..good video, he's a good boy!
He was the cutest with his fang teeth, he was so sweet too
Thank you so much
Can I ask what does the gums being white or blue mean?
Lack of oxygen or can be pale if sick
Cat was behaving like an angel.
you should do a purrito/blanket method which will be less likely to cause injuries for them and will calm them down while protecting you since you only expose the part you are working on. if you scruff, you run the risk of pulling tighter and tighter and if a cat has prior injuries or is older, putting a cat on their back can be very painful. please, use a blanket burrito. it's a lot more humane for them and easier for both of you.
Very helpful thanks so much for making this video. I'll come back and let you know how it goes! My cat is very calm and sweet and actually loves getting brushed and nails clipped (purebred Ragdoll) until you try to get her near water, and then it's like, "oh hell no!" Haha.. She will even play and bat around in the sink water, but freaks if I try to get her wet at all. All she needs is her bottom rinsed, so hopefully with these techniques I will be able to accomplish the task!
I know this is an old comment BUT I just wanted to say..I have a half maine coin/half ragdoll that is the same way!! It's so easy to do so much to him! He almost goes CAT-a-tonic when I groom him! But bring water into the equation and nope!! 😂 glad I'm not the only one!!
Great video! Cute cat
Hes such a good kitty
This Black Cat (Johnny Cash) is not only one handsome cat, but he’s so well behaved!! ☺️👍🐾🐾👍
Johnny Cash was such a good boy, please give him a couple treats. He deserves it. Thanks for the great tips. I will try it on my kitten, Ruby.
that cat was a perfect model.
Thank you, I thought so as well. And he was a barn cat, so it could have gone South fast haha
very helpful, boy that cat is mad, but has not fought or bite
Justine Merrill He is mad
For short haired cats, there is a comb with 2 different length teeth. Use it combing flat against the body. For longer haired cats use a slicker brush to remove any tangles then the comb. I will try do a video on it for you if I can catch one of my cats
Johnny Cash is a barn cat? Are you sure? He seems pretty docile. How is it that he behaves so well. You mentioned how he tries to get away... I didn't see it once.
What a good kitty
HI! Thanks so much for the helpful video! I did try brushing my cat today and when I grabbed his scruff, he started meowing as if in pain, so I would grab around his scruff and he would still meow in pain. We do have another cat as well, that I do brush and he is completely fine. He doesn't freak out while being scruffed. Its only my male Persian cat. He hates being brushed but sense hes a Persian he has to get brushed. What should I do? Is he in pain?
He may have a spinal issue. I can only tell you to have him checked out at a vet or be firmer, it is your choice
PetPrepper I just recently took him to the vet in February. Hes completely healthy. Could it be something else?
Yes, he is working you
PetPrepper Oh! that sounds like my cat. They certainly know how to work their human companions .
My thoughts exactly!! He knows she will let go if he whines and plays like it hurts!! Lol don't fall for it!!
2 of my cats have went buzzerks to where i had to let them go and the grooming was stretched over a few days with unevenness. What shall i do?
It is fine to take a few days. otherwise bring them in to a vet or a groomer and get advice in person. If you can get it done at home and it is done correctly there is nothing wrong with it taking days!
What are the meds you have the cat to groom is it calming spray ?
I am not sure what you are asking. We as groomers are not licensed to medicate animals. This cat isn't sedated at all. And the vet would have to examine a patient to prescribe any sedative.
Thank you.
Cat.Exe error. Unable to reboot.
This Was Very Informative I have 2 cats one is a big baby and will let you do anything to him but is sister well we call her devil cat cause she is impossible only want to be touched on her terms. We will be moving in a few weeks to WV from FL and we will be driving 16 hours I asked the vet about traveling with the cats and they told me there was not much I could do just to make them comfortable do you have any suggestions on keeping them from stressing on the trip I'm really concerned for them
I was about to write a list of things you could try when I noticed you posted this question five years ago. 🤦🏻♀️ How did the move go? Any problems with the babies? 💞
Thank you and good luck
I take care of my cats without any restrictions, it is completely based on trust! They know I will never hurt them and I groom them from kittens as long as they tolerate it and give them a break if they get frustrated. After a while they understood that I wouldn't hurt them and let me do what had to be done! Cats have a good long memory and don't forget when forced or hurt. Cats are most obedient when you respect them!
That’s wonderful. A lot of folks aren’t as fortunate to raise them from birth and have your skills. This video is to help those people so no one gets hurt
Thank you!
That is great! I would rather do the holding than the shaving when it comes to a cats behind!
Aww, Johnny Cash . . . he is a good boy.
LOL THE CAT WHEN IT HAD THE MUZZLE ON LOOKS SO FUNNY i hope the cat was okay with it
cat is like: what the hell you doing to me!!
How funny. My cat would never let me do that. Thats why im searching videos on KZhead 😂
very helpful thanks
ur cat is great model for the demonstration lol
My overweight cat has dingle berries.i will try your technique.it beats forking a hundred bucks over to a vet every time.is it safe to use hair clippers on a cat?
Well that is a very broad question
Oops I hit reply. Is it a cheap ass clipper? Do You know what you are doing? Is the blade sharp and oiled? Is the cat going to be contained? I just can't answer your clipper question and that is maybe why it costs so much to take him in
What do you feed your cats. He looks big and beautiful.
well if I replied people would freak out. So I'd rather not lol he eats mice
that was a great video! thanks!
+Debbie Ierano Thank you back, I get a lot of negative response from that video. Mostly from people who do not have to handle issue cats
+PetPrepper they don't know much about cats then. he looks just the same as when my kitty gets groomed. the groomer uses most of those same techniques that you show. I would like to try and groom my kitty myself and this was helpful. I used to have a really good groomer but now the only place to go where I live is the vet and they put her to sleep to do it. the last time it took her ages to recover from the anesthetic. she's getting older so I don't want to put her through that. she has arthritis. so you have any special tips for arthritic kitties?
Give her a lot of breaks
+PetPrepper thank you! : ))
That cat is soo tamed. I tried everything you mentioned my cat would not hold still
+Tan Pham So sorry, maybe hold on tighter? I wish I were there to help
