  • I had a kitty that was a mega chonk. It started due to his previous owners over feeding and neglecting him. He developed an unhealthy obsession with food. With proper diet and some exercise, we got him down to around 17 lbs. But then he started to develop issues. He got food allergies and developed a thyroid issue. He didn't exercise much anymore because a previous roommate locked him out of the house and while he was out he broke his shoulder. We spent so much money on that cat. He had two specialists he saw and was on a few different meds. But still had folks on Twitter shame me for "clearly overfeeding him" whenever I would post a pic. So no, the weight on this chunky girl isn't healthy, but we have no idea what her story is. It's much better for people to be kind than to jump straight to judgment and condemnation.

    • Thank you for such kind words. My friend too adopted an overweight kitty from a bad situation. The house dogs terrorized the poor kitty making him huddle in a corner all day, no activity. For few years now they have been trying to dechonk him. Unfortunately once the damage is done, its hard to recover from it. He has progressively gotten worse making it difficult to dechonk him. First asthma and then arthritis. Them having to move across country due to job loss made things worse. Life is difficult. But the owner here clearly is cognizant of kitty care and is taking care by getting her groomed to keep her clean.

    • I have a similar story. Sometimes weight management on a cat can be extremely difficult for various reasons. That doesn't mean don't try, but when commenting on someone else's pet, show some grace before condemning them for poor pet care. I would bet that most of us out there who love to share pix of our pets try our best to take good care of them.

She gets Therapy, and Thyroid Meds., they carry her Outside so she has to walk back in on repeat for Exercise 6 Days a Week. 😂 She hasn't shrinked much. Her Fb kind of funds her Vet Bills. For this baby to get this big, someone dropped the ball, whether it was from a thyroid problem or being given too much access to food. It's clear that the owner cares and wants to improve Marley's life now. I wish them all the best, but DON'T EVER call an animal or a child for that matter a "fat chub-o-lard," no matter what caused the overweight.

For more than 10 days, I ate 500-600 calories- and I'm 100% sure of this because my throat hurt so bad from the coughing and it was such a chore. Most people with that calorie level and my level of exercise which is moderate would have lost weight. Guess how much I lost.

You're supposed to be followed by a MD, and take thyroid hormones until you stabilise at some place that's "normal", then it's pretty much a non-issue, even tho it can take months to stabilise. I'm a fat fuc*, but it's not just a thyroid issue, it's mostly because i spend my life in front of a screen, and hate exercise. You can debate the idea that low thyroid is to push those behaviours due to tiredness and such (and you sure have no energy and work on low maintenance when you're low on it, that's how i finally got diagnosed, tbf) but still, it's not something that can't be dealt with with a treatment, and then it's a matter of losing body weight over time, as everyone does.

Cats know when they are not able to move easily and they tend to be defensive about being handled by a stranger. I would say that Marley is by nature a sweet, loving cat who did her best to cope with the situation.

It takes a long time to get a cat to lose weight. Especially if they're older. Our vet said that no matter how much weight she looses, she'll still have the "foopah" and that she's overall a large, muscular cat and should be about 14-15 lbs. for her size and age. She's on a special diet for bladder and kidney health, because she'd had crystals in her urine, which is also a diet food. On some of my videos, I've had unkind things said about her and that suggests to me that they didn't read anything in the description about her... or even read the title. If you want any suggestions, don’t free feed your kitty and definitely no kibble. If your cat like food or treats get them to go up and down the stair case or across the house a few times for movement. And make sure you have a meal plan for wet food and specific times of day under the caloric needs the vet suggests.

  • By her reaction, I would guess that Marley has some arthritis in her hind legs. Yes, the extra weight might be the cause, but it also may he that she got the arthritis first, and stopped exercising as much, or that she comfort eats due to the pain. It's definitely time for a thorough vet check to assess and address her pain, and discuss options for a dietary plan. She is a sweet kitty, and deserves good health and a life as free of pain as possible.

    • My childhood cat was overweight for some time because her knee joints were too shallow so her knees would become dislocated with any excessive motion. She had a literal disability that made exercising challenging. But we did put her on a diet and she went from 16 pounds to about 13 pounds. That doesn’t sound like a big difference but a pound to a cat is much bigger proportionally than a pound to a human. She lived to be 17. I still miss her
