    • Their HD400s don't seem bad. The top-end is a little weak, but the difference $40 CAD makes in Sennheiser's build quality is definitely more than I expected. I'm shocked to see how awful the HD 206 were in the video.

He asked why I had these garbage cans around my neck and threw a pair of Sennheiser 558s at me. Completely changed my perspective on audio as a kid, and it's been a bonding point between us since. Seeing those again was a nice flashback :)

  • Samson actually has a closed back version of the 850. The SR950 has a slightly different driver but are so very close, and I used to use them to listen to audiobooks while using a riding mower, did a great job blocking out the sound. They're also sold as the Superlux 668b and 669, for closed and open back, with a different headband setup and a detachable cable.

    • I still own a pair of HD180's I got way back in 2013, the "predecessor" to both 20X's (they are literally identical). Can't say I hate them, I'm probably the odd one out here, but I kinda prefer the unmuffled, flatter sound profile, all the extra cable is still wrapped with the wire it had in the box, fake leather is definitely crap though, but once it _disintegrated_ and forcefully vacuumed off the 'phones arguably turned out better, lol.

    • I actually bought a pair of 201s for my first audio editing class in college, since our teacher requested headphones with relatively high frequency ranges and flat sound. I wore the cable like a belt to avoid dragging it around. Magically, they survived until I made the mistake of lending them to my then 8 year old sister.

  • I bought the Samsons after hearing how universally praised they were. I had my doubts, but they didn't let me down. They sound great. I use them when tracking instruments, and I DO use them as reference headphones for mixing. They're not my ONLY reference, I'm not insane, but they offer another perspective from my DT-770s and studio monitors. Having said that, though, if you were strapped for cash, and they were your only headphones, I think you could use them for mixing and feel pretty confident about it. I have those Sonys too, and they're pretty tuuuurible. I bought them at Walmart for ten freedom bucks about 8 years ago, because I was taking a flight the next day and didn't want any of my good headphones to get mangled, or lost (I HATED earbuds back then). I still have them, and I'm not even sure why. They're 100% landfill.

  • I mean the whole "non-removable dual cables" thing is mostly because it's easier to design a cheap pair of headphones that way (expecially foldable ones like the Sonys) since the headband doesn't need to house the wire that connects the two sides really. Not to mention they can potentially reuse the cables from their earbuds which is exactly what they do with the mic version of this model. Also I use those for university (The fact that they fold is nice for my bag and I find them more comfortable than my Earpods-like earbuds) and eh I mean they sound all right, the top end is missing a bit but I guess that makes them a fairly mellow pair, they are also quite good with EQ.

    • I've had the noise cancelling version of those Sony headphones for 8 years now. The pleather pads are cracking and falling apart at this point, but having only paid $30 for them, they've had a good run as my office headphones. That cheap cable looks like it would break, but I've been using them 8 hours a day 5 days a week for years and I haven't heard a single crackle out of it. The noise cancelling is good at drowning out A/C noise and office chatter, but they'd struggle with anything louder than that. I want to replace them with a good pair of over ears like the AKG K240s, but I don't know if the newer ones are worth the money, seeing as how they're a samsung product and made in China now. if the new AKG K240s are essentially a cheapened version of themselves, why not just get the Samson SR850s? Decisions, decisions.

  • Thanks to your earlier review of the SR850s I bought a set and couldn't be happier. Well, almost. Maybe my ears are too big or something but they aren't quite as comfortable as I'd hoped, but it's only a little a discomfort after several hours of listening. These are one of the very few sets of cans I actually bought at retail, and that's saying something for me. I have literally several dozen sets of headphones, with most of them having been picked up at the Goodwill Outlet for $1.39/lb. Decent ones, too, not all no-name landfill material. Several sets of HD280s and other various Senny's, lots of Bluetooth sets from major manufacturers including Bose and Marshall and plenty of decent gaming headsets as well. Some needed a little repair or tweaking, but at that price I kind of expected that. There's also a nice pair of MDR-7506 Pros that I rescued from a dumpster, literally, when I worked next to an office that dealt in unclaimed luggage. The Avantree A9S was a pleasant surprise, and were my main wireless headphones until I snagged a set of AirPod Pros. None of these are really high-end, but it's a decent assortment, and if anything were to happen to them I wouldn't be angry or depressed about the financial hit. And you are spot on when it comes to the stock Apple EarPods. They're really not bad at all, and depending on the recording the soundstage is amazing. I used to go into the office on Sundays and was generally the only one there. There were times when I was listening to some live recordings, usually stuph by Oregon, and would hear a noise off to the side. On several occasions I would get up and look around the empty office, thinking that the noise was coming from somewhere in the office and not from the recording. There was one time I posted a pic of my recent acquisitions to a headphone group on Reddit, and was downvoted to hell. It seemed to be a bunch of snobs that associated price with quality, not recognizing that you can get some surprisingly good sound without spending a fortune. Yes, I'd like to have some Grados or something by Meze or Stax or even Beyerdynamic, but I'm a cheap bastard and have been unemployed for a couple of years so I have to make do. One of the commenters said that if I had spent the money that I wasted on all the headphones in the picture I could have bought some actual high-quality headphones. I then asked what high-quality headphones I could have bought with the $25 or so I spent on this entire collection, and to the surprise of absolutely nobody I didn't get a response...

  • Aight, after watching your video I went online looking for any listing for the SR850 (we don't have amazon here) and I found like a remote professional music store selling these like 20 km away from where I am. Spent a day driving through sketchy roads and poorly planned neighborhoods fully expecting to wreck or smash my car somewhere by the end of the trip. and then finally reached the store, reached into my pockets, handed the guy the bargain money and put them on for a first time test. Heaven. It's been like a few weeks now and wow, they're still heaven, man. And I have you to thank here. I've bought junk like 5 times the price that don't sound nowhere near as good as these, thank you so much.

  • I went through a couple pairs of Sony MDR-ZX110APs over a few years (different from the model shown in this video, presumably a non-bass-boosted version?) before getting into more costly audio equipment and while they aren't that good, they're not overloaded in any form and for $20 are viable as a "cheap" bit of equipment. They also fold up quite nicely and can fit easily in backpacks and the like without hassle or worry (I've never broken a pair even with any mistreatment of them) My advice on buying cheap Sony headphones is to always buy "AP" models (as compared to NC or "bass-boosted" models) as the other two tend to have durability and/or sound quality issues (and they ironically cost more than "AP" models)

    • @@garydsketch It's all very subjective. I hate the Koss porta pros honestly, I went through two pairs in the span of a month (got the first ones replaced because they broke within like a week). I wasnt even that rough with them just like normal headphones. Broke the other pair a few weeks later.. The sound is like.. meh.. Not bad for the price I guess but for just 20 usd more you can get way better over ear. Only problem is it will be clunkier as well. What I did a year ago or so is that I took a step back and invested in a pair of in ear, kz zsn pro (15 usd) sound veery good for that price. Specially if you EQ it a touch. Then if you want to get something even better there are kz zs10 pro for 30 usd or so which I bought 2 months back or so. I have been using over ears in the 40-100 usd range for years before that. Still do some times but rarely (sennheiser hd 280 or marshall monitor headphones). They both the kz's need to be played in a bit because at the start they are kinda sharp in the higher stuff, but if its something you are going to move around with I would recommend checking out in ears even if you might think that sound stupid. There are lots of very cheap very good options atm. It all depend on music taste etc though unfortunately, specially with the low price stuff.

  • I watched this video with a pair of Sony ZX-100 headphones plugged into my tablet. The ZX-100 are pretty much cosmetically identical to the 110s you tested except for the placement of the Sony badge and having a little red trim piece to tell you which way they go. I paid $4 for them at a US Kmart that was going out of business around a decade ago and they've been with me ever since. Mine are white. The plastic has held up very well, it's still flexible and no cracks. They used two different types of plastic in making the band (if you look closely it's in three pieces). The center band section is starting to turn '90s IBM PC beige; but the rest is still bright white. The cables that connect to each cup are still fine, I assumed it was a cost saving measure until this video and not a conscious design decision, but they are annoyingly mildly corkscrewy. Tough though. They sound good in my opinion, although I do agree your criticism of the narrow soundstage. I feel it doesn't have excessive amounts of bass and the box says they're "reference", so maybe adding base is what necessitated going from ZX-100 to ZX-110? Finally; that pleather on the pads is as thin as paper and will start to fall off in quarter sized chunks after a couple of years. I ended up swapping them out for some black pleather pads from a pair of "iHip" headphones I picked up open box in a Big Lots clearance bin for $1 like 7 or 8 years ago. They were very flat with absolutely no base; but their pads are great and they fit a ZX-100 perfectly. It gives it a stylish Panda look. At 0:59, lower right, it shows Sentry headphones. Those are actually name brand in America. Not high end or anything; but they've been around since before I was born and you can buy them everywhere it seems. They also make calculators and were one of the pioneers in cassette tapes in the US. EDIT: I forgot to close the parentheses.

Sony zx300, $25US, they're alright, very durable, what I use when traveling, after like 6 years of use, I was actually able to tell that the speakers were losing definition, and why I upgraded to the 7506. Sony 7506, $80US, it's what I use for everything while at home, PS4 through controller, XB1 through the monitor jack (controller jack has too much static to use), phone, tablet, so much detail in everything. Took me 2 weeks for my ears to adjust to how they sounded. Skullcandy Crushers (wired), $35US, when BASS is both the question and the answer, there is no better choice, unless you get the Crusher Wireless, which have stereo active bass instead of mono active bass. Bass Canon is a proper canon! The Crusher (wired) suck for anything that isn't MAXIMUM BASS they are literally unusable for voice chat because one of my friends has a voice that is so freaking low that the Active Bass activates and I can't understand a single thing he says. There is a reason everything was compared to the $90 Sony 7506, and why you often see them in the behind the scenes of movies, they're solid, like the Nissan GTR of headphones, sure there is a lot better, but it all costs more. • I've got the noise-cancelling version of the Sony MDR-ZX110Bs, which is the Sony MDR-ZX110NCs. They sound good to me, because my standards are very low. Noise-cancelling also sounds really nice to me; it's great how it works with my digital piano and that makes the piano sound so much better. That's probably because I've never owned noise-cancelling headphones before this pair though. Edit: Should also mention, the glossy finish on the sides is replaced by a sort of shiny, circular thing? Some sort of radial metallic shine without actual metal, of course it's plastic. I don't know how to describe it. But it actually probably looks worse in terms of attracting scratches that way than with the glossy finish. Also, the cables on mine are circular instead of flattened. Spaghetti instead of fettuccine. Update on my pair: RIP. Left headphone died, unless the cable was in an extremely specific position. Had them for 3 years or so.

    • I'm like him and I have worked in schools. Trust me it's easy when you are a chill teacher. You instantly become the favorite and kids know they got it good and don't want to screw it up. I tried the yelling approach my first year for about a month and it didn't work especially with the really low groups which are pretty much the groups where they throw all the bad kids. They just laugh at you because they don't care about any consequences. After that whenever a kid acted like a moron I would just low key roast em. That was much more effective then threats. I also didn't care or blow up about cussing. Finally the last thing I'll mention is that gym and music teachers have it easy. Almost all of the kids in music want to be there because everyone else chooses art and gym is gym, all the normally bad or low grade guys want to be there so they don't screw around there. Also the fact that for both being noisy is literally what it's about so keeping kids quiet isn't really a thing.
