As an Audio Engineer of over 16 years, reviewing the Sennheiser HE-1 Headphones is an honor. I flew across the country to listen to and react to the Sennheiser HE-1 and record sound samples of the Sennheiser HE-1. I even compared the Sennheiser HE-1 with the Sennheiser HD800S, Sennheiser HD6XX, and Sennheiser HD560S, and the results were shocking.

  • If you live near Hanover, Germany, you coud theoretically listen to these headphones every day, because they are displayed at the Sennheiser Flagship Store (connected to their production facilities) in a seperate room. And if you kindly ask the staff, they let you in, leave you alone with a bunch of CDs and/or your mobile phone. And if you're lucky enough and the store isn't crowded, they even don't ask you to leave. Well, I listened to this very pair of headphones, my first song was (if I remember correctly) Ride Across The River by Dire Straits and yes: those headphones cost you as much as pretty well configured Volkswagen Passat, but they are worth every penny. The sound quality is so outstanding and astonishing, you can barely describe what you hear to someone just in words. So, if you live near Hanover, like I do, take a half day off, drive to the Wedemark and take a chance to listen to these masterpieces. I absolutely recommend. Edit: For all who are planning trips to Hanover now: Sennheiser unfortunately closed their flagship store due to the sellout of their customer headphone division. The pair of HE1 travels around now and is displayed at different HiFi-studios across the country.

  • My friend worked for Sennheiser and I got to try these out at a listening event. They had a bunch of pre-selected songs on tidal lossless. Him being awesome, let me chose any song I wanted and I chose introducing palace players by Mew, which I've listened to hundreds of times of decent headphones. It was like hearing it for the first time. Instruments were separated, but still somehow fit together. I could hear perfect detail on any element of the song I wanted to focus on. I spent the next few weeks genuinely depressed knowing how good music could sound, and how I'd likely never experience again because i couldn't afford 100k for headphones. Anywho, these headphones really are as good as they say they are.

  • Thank you for sharing your incredible experience with us, Brandon. I'm becoming more and more of a fan of Sennheiser for the innovations they're pushing the industry forward. This thing is somethin' else. It's not a headphone. What they've created was an experience for that special person that can truly appreciate aural precision. I only wish my hearing was good enough to appreciate such amazing tech. For me this is the kind of experience equivalent to that of an expresso afficionado when they imbibe their very first god-shot. It was so amazing it kicked off a decade-plus year journey down the espresso rabbit hole. I've been searching for that elusive god-shot ever since. So I can definitely relate to what you've experienced, despite not having heard it (and I doubt I could experience it the same way because I don't have the same level of listening acuity as you do as a professional audio engineer)

  • As a professional classical musician/instrumentalist, the headphones that I always go back to after trying out something new is the HD599. Somehow the slight warmth they have in their sound gives me a very cozy feeling. But well - I'm a german brass player, so of course I love warm sound with open style over-ear headphones. Especially nice for a wide orchestral sound stage and a tone colour that doesn't kill your ears with piccolo flute trebles.

My first track was a few tracks from Dead Can Dance and it left me and my other colleagues in tears. These are expensive and from that day on I understand why these things are expensive. The whole exercise is a ritual like in un-bottling and sipping on some expensive rare single malt, in this case firing it up waiting for the tubes to slide up and warm up and hear your music on those lounge chairs. The value of these just go up if not monetarily, definitely on a personal level which is worth it.

  • I recognize one of the differences between the original track and the HE1. I played around a lot with matrix surround in the '80s. One of the things that I tried was putting variable filters on the ground line so that I could alter the difference between the left and right channels separately from the sum of the channels. It sounds to me like the high frequency difference signal has a few db of gain. Not a lot, but it is there. You can not do much this way without destroying the soundstage, but just a little can open up a recording. I used a pair of isolation transformers and some breadboard. I never did find something I wanted to make permanent because no matter what I did, something suffered. I mostly wound up using it in line when dubbing between LP's and cassette to play either over headphones or in the car. I could get something that I liked on one song no problem. Sometimes I could get something that sounded good on an entire album, but nothing sounded good on everything. I wonder if there's any logic in the electronics on those headphones to switch or alter that effect depending on the music. I was thinking of such things but I lacked any equipment that could implement such a thing at the time.

    @jdrissel@jdrissel8 ай бұрын
    • Listening in further I'm actually surprised that I could hear the difference between these headphones - especially given that what I'm listening to on is considerably less expensive. I may have a practice here but I'm surprised that I can hear this over a pair of Bluetooth headphones even if they are the Sony XM5s.

  • I used my favorite headphones to listen to the demo (ultrasone edition 10 with modified auto EQ) and the 560s sounded distorted, 6xx was intimate but very well balanced, 800s has wild tuning but the staging was nice, and the HE1 sounded the most well rounded with a touch of tube warmth. Even listening to the original song my headphones were missing something when compared to the HE1.

    @aracari@aracari9 ай бұрын

      @sbichson@sbichson9 ай бұрын
    • @@sbichsonbecause the quality of the headphones components affects the ways of music quality. Let's say you listen to music on Sennheiser, $40 Sonya or $10 off brand headphones. The Sennheiser s will always sound best on clarity and richness

      @Keepskatin@Keepskatin7 ай бұрын
    • @@sbichson The best way to describe it, is that a lot of headphones have "grain" which cannot be fixed with tuning or really anything you play through them, which causes certain sounds to have miniscule or even large differences between frequencies. For example 569 hertz being disproportionately louder then 572 hertz. Or frequencies of sound being distorted into frequencies that they are not. Its the difference between printing up an image on a normal printer versus a pantone validated professional graphics printer. The source image is the same but the quality of the printed image is better because the pantone validated printer represents the details of the original image much better.

  • First off, an epic video, with tension and suspense. Well done :). Secondly, great influencer sales ad for S. :). Sennheiser has now baked into the viewer's mind all sorts of subtle but powerful associations: 1. a family owned business; 2. brand loyalty by a "fan---," 3. an audio experience that moves someone to tears; 4. no need to think about any other brand because there's nothing like Sennheiser:). Again, thanks, but this video is such a reminder to pay attention as consumers to the role of influencers in shaping our buying habits.

And I absolutely agree with you to me it sounds like hybrid between the hd6xx and the hd660s, a little closer to the hd660s, but I guess you didn't have it at the time you listened to the HE-1. But your observations were spot on. When I used to compare the hd6xx and 660s to the HE-1 people were like no no comparison. Well it has better technicalities throughout the entire audio spectrum, details, imaging, etc. Again I absolutely loved this video and DMS is such a jerk LoL 🤣🤣🤣.

I mean the over the top presentation of these did most definitely make them sound even better than they are, just the same way as it's proven for a fact that a wine will taste better if served to you on a golden plate from the nicest butler you'd ever met in a dreamy restaurant somewhere in sunny Italy compared to the exact same wine from a bag in box on a shitty Monday morning. So yeah, the headphones are probably really good and if I'd ever got asked if I wanted to try them I might do it, but nothing at all that I'd be interesting in getting at all even if I had the cash for it. A Topping L30 with some pair of open back headphones for say around 300 euro and a PEQ on top of that would sound better.

To get the wide soundstage you hear with certain headphones, they are introducing artifacts not present in the original recording. Some like it, some don't, I'm not here to debate whether it's good or not, but technically it isn't accurate.

It is also notorious for limiting your position relative to the speaker and limited dynamics and bass, so headphones are ideal because they are right at your ear and don’t need to be driven hard to get volume and dynamics. I don’t know if these work like other electrostats, but I wouldn’t want that much voltage/amperage around my head.

They'll be the ones with the tracks to make the best use of your equipment.
