  • First episode has a lot in common with cult initiations. Break down their wills by changing their appearance in an uncomfortable way and simultaneously the strength of their identity, tell them they're "boss" for doing what they're told (really manipulative, even if unintentionally), then have them pose completely exposed? That's major psychological power play stuff to make them lose their sense of autonomy and self-ownership. That's not true empowerment... very much the opposite. Poor girls. :(

    • I have to agree with you, whether or not one feels the red-head gal's attachment to her natural hair is valid, what was said to her, followed by the virginity comment that was very, very obviously not about hair, was so offensive to me my gut reaction was wishing she would have the courage to get up and walk out right there. I don't know if she got herself into something she didn't really understand, or what, but under no circumstances is it acceptable to do something to a person that causes or makes them feel like they are losing jurisdiction over their own body.

  • As a natural redhead I COMPLETELY understand the redhead freaking about her hair. Like hers, every single strand of my hair is a different color. It's impossible to get this color from dye. And SO MANY people comment on how they think it's pretty and how people try to get it from a bottle and they just don't get there. It's so easy to ruin red hair. I made the mistake of getting highlights when I didn't get them naturally as much in the summer now and I'm so bummed with how long it's taking to get back to my fully natural color. That poor girl was 100% justified in being concerned. If they wanted her to be a redhead, they should've left her color alone. Give her a dramatic cut if you want to switch it up but why dye a gorgeous natural redhead to a fake flat red?

  • I really think it's messed up that they made the girly twin wear a more masculine hairstyle. Black women are constantly masculinized and defeminized (see for example any Black female athelete) people claim Serena Williams is a man etc. So to see a Black woman whose identity is so clearly tied to femininity and then they purposely strip it from her to make her upset, is especially cruel to me. We already know this from past seasons, but this show hates Black models and often mistreats them just to get a rise out of them and that's just wrong. Tyra especially would cut ppl's natural hair knowing how much their hair meant to them.

I genuinely liked it when I saw hair on black females get cut and then they ROCK the short hair, cause short or almost shaved hair doesn't automatically equate to masculine. And as someone who did have such a huge tie to my long hair, it's honestly more toxic to our community. We think long hair is pretty when that's not true. I cut off all my hair and I loved it cause it made me feel free cause I didn't need the hair to feel "girly." But granted that's my opinion and I understand where she's coming from. As a dark skin black women who was also bald (shaved my head by choice) for years {@lifebristyle on insta if you need proof boo 😘} I had strangers often walk up to me and ask me “what are You” or tell me I look like a boy. There is nothing wrong with not wanting that for yourself. It’s not “racist” to point out that black women are often masculinized. That’s why the original commenter used the very common example of Serena and her sister. The models gender expression, especially as a black fem women should have been respected and considered. This comment simply opened the door to a larger conversation. Also it’s not just her hair was cut short it was the WAY it was cut. I know you saw those sharp ass lines 😭. Models have zero knowledge about hair. I mean yeah they get their own hair styled and they get their makeup done, but that doesn't mean that THEY know how to do hair or they know what looks good on certain face shapes, skin tones, eye colors etc... These makeups would come out so much better if they just had real hairstylist choosing what the looks are instead of just following what they're told to do by the model host.

That seems abusive honestly. Peoples gender identity and expression is nothing to fuck around with in terms of their MAIN "SIGNATURE" look. Why would you pick something that would make someone feel inauthentic to their gender expression? That ain't it for me.

    @awholeworldoflove@awholeworldoflove2 жыл бұрын
    • You have a good point. People should do whatever they want with their own appearance if it affects their identity enough that changing it could mess with their deeper self-image. Projects like this dumb show and their (often bad) makeovers might not be worth the compromise or hassle. After 22 seasons, these games played for drama should be expected (it's why I stopped watching long ago.) I think it's also valid to admit though, that models who insist on looking only one particular way are pigeonholing themselves to a certain extent, limiting their own careers. Unless you're in the top tier, models usually don't get to call the shots (except to quit if they don't want to do something.) There are thousands of other jobs in the world to be done that aren't centered on how you look.

    • @@agathachris9722 I understand that and will make an effort to not use that word casually. Thanks for sharing your experience. I do think it can be harmful and this show typically seemed to push the envelope in terms of what is appropriate in a work environment just because it's a form of "show business" and therefore folks should be prepared to put up with ANYTHING to advance their career. I don't think this is a healthy thing to promote or enforce in a competition setting where many contestants are competing to provide for their families or themselves, leaving their families and being tested in varying levels of intense treatment. The normalization starts on episode 1 when they cut their hair without trying to choose a cut that is authentic to the person. They would consistently choose styles that were the opposite of how they felt comfortable. As a kid I thought this was the pull them out of their box, but as an enby adult I see it as harmful to these folks whether they stay in the competition or not. I hope this makes sense and used sensitive language so you can relate without feeling the intensity of the other word I used. Sorry again and sending you much love.

If she doesn't want to change her hair colour, then she should be allowed to keep it. I don't think it is stupid, especially knowing how hard it is to finally accept and love parts of you that you initially hated. It carried value, and a dozen hair colour transformations wouldn't change that, or even come close to it. So glad she stood up for herself. But it's true. As a redhead I would dye my hair just cause people would tell me not to, I've done blacks, browns, other reds, have bleached parts of my hair. When I shaved my head it all came back the same colour my hair naturally was, I don't think hair dyes ruins your genetics so therefore once it fully grows out you should have your natural colour back.

    • I would dye my hair so many different colors if I was not a ginger. The only time I’ve ever dyed my hair was 7 years ago when I dyed a very small piece behind my ear with Demi permanent color, and it has never been *quite* the same since. That piece is not as vibrantly ginger as it was before; it has an almost ashy quality to the color in that spot, like it has lost some of its luster. Normally, my hair really glints in the sun as if it’s actual copper, but the hair in that spot just doesn’t as much. It’s not noticeable unless I point it out, but I still wouldn’t want the rest of my hair to loose a little bit of the shimmer that makes it so pretty. I don’t know how or why this happened to the hair I dyed, but it sadly did. If I ever did it again, I would definitely avoid my roots, though, because I think I remember feeling a slight burning sensation, so maybe that has something to do with it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I think she was afraid they were going to make her look more generic, and Brad may not have seen the difference, but imo it *did* look more artificially red in the “after” photo.

      @Emnms68@Emnms682 жыл бұрын
    • @@Emnms68 Depending on what color you dyed it, it probably just toned your hair. For example, any color that's opposite red/orange/yellow, will turn your hair into a more cool toned shade. So purples, blues and greens can do this, as well as using ash toned colors. The new baby hairs would grow back normally, but it may have toned the existing hair, which if it hasn't washed out yet, then it probably will remain toned. Also with it loosing it's glint or vibrancy, it could be damage, but you said Demi permanent, so I doubt the color damaged your hair. I took color theory in school and there are a few videos of Brad's that talk about color theory pertaining to hair colors.
