That’s exactly what I thought. The makeovers are almost never good. The girls are always crying. Tyra seems to have an obsession with shocking women by giving them pixie cuts all the time, especially when they have long beautiful hair.

I found it a little off how Tyra tried to guilt trip her into getting that makeover. If it's about her culture or heritage that she's proud of let her keep it. I swear everytime she sees an ounce of personality she has a trip.
It felt pretty insensitive. Like isn’t the whole idea of diversifying the modeling industry to have better cultural representation? Native American culture treasures their hair. It’s A part of their spiritual being And their history.
Exactly. And then saying: "it's not about you". No Tyra, it might not be, but that doesn't mean she has no bodily autonomy at all. Models have a say in what they do and do not find acceptable in the real world too. And even though it might not be about them, the fashion industry still mainly is about skinny white women who don't represent a lot of people, and that is wrong. This show has made so many missteps when it comes to diversity, while they could have been an excellent example. What about the thousands of girls at home who would like to be represented too, huh? Ffs, this show whitewashed every non white model, and has even done blackface a couple of times. I don't even know why I am dissapointed still.
I mean what she said was true. In 2012. In 2021, fashion is much more open to models looking unique and having their own personalities and celebrating their cultures and their disabilities and their bodies and even their tattoos. Fashion in 2012 was simply not ready for lesbians or indigenous people. Thank god it’s finally evolving.

I get that you’re supposed to go with the flow as a model, but Tyra gave them a choice this season on the make over and then was disappointed when they said no. It’s not like they refused any other season, she literally gave them the option to say no. Don’t make it an option if you don’t want them to choose it!

Oh please anybody who has seen even one season of this show knows the makeovers are a hope for the best but prepare for the worst and keep your mouth shut either way situation. This was the 19th freaking season. Also Victoria who refused the makeover ends up in like 4th place.
One more reason I hate Tyra. She doesn’t actually care about them. She did it for shock reasons and ratings and she’s very manipulative. Yes, it’s only hair and will grow back or you can change the color but she sets them up to fail anyways. Makes them get these ugly makeovers and then turns around and eliminates them. Plus many of the styles Tyra gives the girls are so ugly and I’m like what the hell was she thinking that this will make them top models. I stopped watching the show long time ago because of this crap.

I used to watch this show religiously and they all seem to blur together because there were SO many cycles, but I definitely remembered her. When she said, "Icy blonde," I was like, "Oh, yeah, this was one of the best makeovers on the show."

I distinctly remember her criticizing a model during her judging about how she wasn't "taking care of her body" enough (after the girls were bullying her for eating more than them back at the house). Then, on the other side of things, in cycle 15, telling a model she was "too thin."

Just because someone wants to be a model doesn't mean they should change things about themselves. I am glad some girls said no. They should able to show off their natural beauty and not be made to change everything about themselves.
I met Victoria at one of the niche new York Fashion week events. She's really down to earth and still does a lot of work as a model. Such as new York Fashion week. I think the year I met her she did something like 12 shows all over the city. (Not including photo shoots she did.) She also has her own jewelry/accessories line that's called JTV. She's a really interesting person to talk to.
I think we can all agree that Brad reacting to ANTM makeovers makes them so much more entertaining than they are on their own.

Her listening to her gut was the right thing to do regardless. The show is literally ABUSIVE and pressuring the girls to things they don't want to do, so refusing to be subject to that probably will lead to elimination, public humiliation or mentally abusive treatment, but that DOES NOT mean that the choice was wrong. Listening to what you want and are willing to do, and not letting people trample all over your personal boundaries is a good thing, not a bad one. Modeling industry is largely abusive and dehumanizing, and tyra does a great job at reinforcing that. She is teaching people that you should say yes to whatever people employing you want you to do, and saying true to yourself means you're entitled and vain, which is literal manipulation to make people give in to being abused and controlled.
I wish Naomi Campbell could offer Tyra a makeover, and then guilt trip her about it if she did decline it

A huge part of my job is cultural consideration. I cannot imagine the outrage if this happened in my country. Edit: I worked with foster care, and haircuts are something that biological family ALWAYS have a say on, legally, because hair for some is a hugely important cultural practise. I have disliked Tyra's treatment of natural hair for a long time, the show is riddled with controversies surrounding race. The fashion industry is what needs to change, not the models.
I went to college with Nastasia. I always thought her hair was beautiful, so even though her makeover wasn't drastic, I'm glad she got to keep it as is. It was great seeing her in your video.
Victoria did the right thing. Her hair is SO special and unique as a Jewish woman, and it helped her career massively to rep that. I know she wasn't popular on the show but I love her. Also, you said ew about a makeover that made one of the girls an actual supermodel, lol.

My thoughts exactly! I was already put off when Tyra told that woman that her braids had to go because of the opinion of Internet strangers. I about lost it when she proceeded to tell the other woman not to care what people think.
Also, I feel like Tyra made that comment about the braids just in case people got mad about the decision. That way she could blame it on the fans. “Well I wanted her to keep them, but y’all said no”.

Agreed. In one of the Brad-covered ANTM makeover episodes, Tyra said, “Don’t you want to be beautiful?!” when the model questioned the look before getting her hair done / cut. I was like, *are they SERIOUS? All these people are stunning!* The manipulation is so effed. And in an industry that already promotes shame and self-loathing “only remedied by [X] product,” I guess keeping the models “down” along with the consumer is how to sell stuff… Ugh. I have to stop watching these. They’re just making me angry.

I literally can’t with you and those curls. They were dry and sad before and afterwards you say she doesn’t look any different but her curls were literally brought back to life. So much more volume and bounce and the blonde placement makes it look effortless and natural. Absolutely gorgeous now.

kinda funny how the make overs before this cycle were pretty wild and drastic. then when they give the girls a chance to opd out, the make overs are pretty normal and basic, and sometimes even flattering to make them wish they trusted tyra. kinda funny.

Eh I think she just said that as an excuse. If you watch that cycle you see that her hair is actually curly and she talks way more about being Jewish than Native American and is obsessed with her mother who is a blond.
Then don’t be a model. Don’t go on the show. How many seasons is it going to take for people to understand, YOU ARE A CANVAS and if you aren’t ready for people to change your hair, don’t be in the industry. It’s getting old with the same old excuses. If you’re that attached to your hair, don’t go on the show. It’s that simple.

I’ve personally worked with Victoria. She’s so incredibly nice, and very proud of her heritage. Her hair literally looks the exact same to this day. Maria on the other hand... that girl is a whole different story 🙄

Tbh... Victoria (cherokee girl) actually made it pretty far in that cycle. So I would say that it wasn't really self sabotage.
I'm shocked how far she made it. I didn't really like her. She was talking about her mom a ridiculous amount and it seemed like she didn't have a sense of personal identity without her mom

Me too. And it doesnt. Part of what I dont get about this show is that from what I know of the modeling world, you can do crazy stuff with wigs and makeup if you specifically want a certain model, and fashion changes so quickly anyway that most models dont seem to change their own look that often and just stay with whatever is most malleable. I refuse to believe this is necessary, healthy, or not abusive. Modeling has enough issues surrounding consent without this insanity.

Watch the season and then see what you think. That isn't even her natural hair she straightens it daily and wears it in up dos that have nothing to do with Native American culture. Also she talks about being Jewish a lot and never really mentions anything about her grandmother or being native again.

Does anyone else feel bad for the modle that didn't want the makeover because her grandma was Indian and had the same hair? To me, hair is a very deep and real thing.. to some, they can change it for the sake of "being a canvas for the fashion industry" (and of course thats okay) but for some others its part of their identity.. Idk..

@@rishikab.4396 I'm mostly white myself, but when my hair was cut too short I ligit cried. My hair is a wavey, long, auburn color, and was so important to my beauty. As a self concous kid, my hair was the most important thing. Couldn't imagine how important it is to those who's hair is apart of their culture and identity.
I don't feel bad for her in the sense of I feel bad she didn't do it, but because she was probably shamed because of her decision. Like you said hair can be a very deep and personal thing and it seems wrong to imply that you would have to change your hair to be a model.
