I thought it was about time I made an updated "basic hamster care" video as my last one was 4 years ago, has outdated information and was the second time filming myself in front of the camera so I'm extremely awkward and look mad 😅 Here are some awesome hamster care resources for you to continue doing more research!

  • I’ve just started working in a pet shop this month and I’m so relieved with the people I work with as the majority of them own hamsters and have proper cages (large tanks or converted indoor guinea pig cages) and we all try to properly educate the customers. Some customers will actually listen and take the advice and others will be very rude and say while looking at a tiny cage “it says it’s suitable for them”, we even will refuse sale of the hamster if they’re buying a tiny cage. I also recommend your channel to them as I’ve learned so much from watching you

    • The best thing we can do is stop purchasing animals from pet stores, period. Animals are not here for our entertainment and supplier breeding conditions are often appalling. I am rescuing a hamster from an absolute dolt, who DID buy a tiny cage and is already looking to give the little guy away. Treat animals with respect folks, they are not commodities to be bought, sold, traded or treated poorly.

    • @@makermania182 you can say the same thing about breeders, we have a vet area the does chips and vaccines which I work on too and you can see some of the "breeders" aren't good. I've also brought rats from meant to be good breeders but they wasn't and had many issue. I 100% agree animals aren't toys, which is what me and all the other girls make sure who we're selling to knows how to care for them. I do this job to try properly educate people, most of the time it's older people / parents who will refuse to learn or listen so we refuse to sell to them :)

  • I’ll just mention that a common issue with hamsters is one or two eyes might stick closed due to excess crusty eye build up, take a clean wet washcloth or paper towel and hold it against them for several minutes and follow up wiping with a wet Q-tip. This is more likely to happen when they sleep a lot or get older. If it happens frequently then try more regular damp wiping

But now my hamster has a 10 inch wheel with 6 inches of bedding, 687 sq inches, 2 wooden chews and a sand bath with all natural reptile sand and a hideout and I also added rocks in that I cleaned well. Thank you so much for teaching me all about hamsters, they don’t live long so I should give Cookie the best “short” life!

  • I’m so glad there are people like you explaining how hamsters should live! I own a little dwarf hamster (her name is sprinkle) and she was first owned by my moms bosses kids (always a bad idea) and ofc the kids didn’t want to play with her bc she was “aggressive” and scared. We brought her home and had no clue how to take care of her, so we did some research and started getting her different/more shavings, changed her food and water intake to be healthier, worked for a whole 5 months to tame her (was very difficult because she was extremely scared of us) Although we sadly had to put her through surgery to remove a fat lump somehow she made it through! My little girls a fighter, she’s even scared off my cats hehe. I’ve now recently convinced my dad to get her a wooden enclosure (we’ve almost spent R4000 on her already) and got her loads of toys, she’s very happy now and it’s all thanks to you! Without you my dad wouldn’t have been convinced to get my girl a new enclosure and I would’ve never become so passionate about these little guys. Before I owned a hamster I thought it was normal for them to die from everything and that they were stupid or not worth my time, now after owning my little girl she’s changed my mind about them she’s even cheered me up and helped me get through hard times at school. I’m extremely thankful for her and so happy I could give her the proper enrichment. I’m hoping to one day go into studies to try and research these little guys more because there’s such little known about them. My little girl has become so confident and happy and loves being around people now. I hope everybody gets to experience the little love these guys have because it truly is life changing ❤

  • I have never known these things I always thought that what I was doing was great. And I was really happy when you talked about spot cleaning because in an article it said you had to clean the whole cage every week. And, I was also really glad when you talked about cages because I used to have a small cage for my hamster and then I upgraded but I still have a feeling it is still a small cage for my hamster. I love you videos so much because they are very informative. Now I can help my hamster have a better life ❤️.

From what I can see they have 3 burrow entrances. They have a variety of treats like dried carrot, sunflower seeds ect.

  • Found your videos and channel very recently, Ms Raechel. You provide balanced and sensible hamster information. Thank you for sharing your wealth of experience and knowledge in an easily digestable manner. I am a prior Golden Syrian hamster carer. He was my first and only so I definitely had my questions and anxieties over how best to take care of him. I always made sure to do by due diligence research-wise before making any big decision about him. I do wish I came across your channel when he was in my care though! I never was able to offer him the life of a burrower but he grew very accustomed to human contact because I hated to have him in the hamster cage I adopted. Yes you named it, cage biting and monkey bars. As a novice hamster when I first noticed it I knew instinctively it wasn't right. With my living situation at the time space was very much at a premium and maybe this goes hand in hand but I also cannot truly say I considered upgrading his cage. I am thinking now, though, that had I come across your videos at an earlier time, I would have understood the importance and simplicity of why he needs his space to be significant, and I would have just moved some things around perhaps... nonetheless my solution to the cage biting and monkey bars was to have him outside the cage most of the time. This meant hamster-proofing the apartment, blocking all nooks and crannies etc. It also meant he had effectively 2 homes now and I did trace his journeys and found his second food storage spot in the corner of a cupboard! 🤣 Because of his free reign of the place, he was quite the boss and he did quite a bit of exploring - much to my chagrin he found this spot one time that I had failed to hamster proof and taunted me just out of reach as I had wait for him and entice him to emerge using bribery and patience! I'm happy also that I was able to feed him a decent diet with raw and cooked veggies, seeds, and grains. By the way, he was powerful and intelligent; he found a way to open his cage by himself - he could make it all the way from his cage (which was in an elevated position) all the way to his second food storage in the distant cupboard, then come all the way back, climb and crawl up a sofa, hop across the table, on to a ledge and back into his cage IF I leave the flap open. He can even open the cage flap from inside when it is latch-closed if I don't attach a small bag of pebbles or weight to the cage flap! 😅 I wish I could have provided him burrowing capabilities because he was a burrower at heart (explorer and carpet puller) but I try to have no regrets about it cause I always tried my best and with the knowledge I have now with your vids I'm much better prepared to offer future hamster friends a more complete life experience! Thanks for the videos and info and also to any who took the time to read. Take care of you and yours :)
