23 Hamster Behaviours 🐹

2024 ж. 13 Мам.

Have you ever wondered what your hamster was trying to tell you? Well, today we discuss all of the different behaviours your hamster may display and what they mean, from squeaking to their tail sticking up to scent marking we talk about them all!
Thank you to everyone who submitted clips for me to use in the video as examples! I know many mentioned being a bit embarrassed to share their clips with bad behaviour but do know showing these behaviours is extremely helpful and educational to others! Please do not bother anyone mentioned in the video that shared their clips, many are old footage back when they didn't know proper care (and have since learned!).
Remember if your hamster suddenly changes behaviour it's best to see your local exotic vet as it can indicate something is wrong.
Ps If youre wondering why Waddles wasn’t used as barely any examples thats because he’s a CIA Robot and they clearly forgot to program him with regular behaviours as simple as grooming 😂 /j

    • Aww. I adopted, didn't buy, a girl from a petstore. Why? She had been returned 2 times; the second time, she was fear screaming nonstop for *3 hours* since the people bought her. The poor thing was just terrified and I think was a bit on the younger side. She would still make concerned noises even when she freely got on my hand weeks later and just stayed a vocal little girl. She wouldn't scream much but once she adjusted she was a happy chirper/squeaker

I gently tilted the jar over to get him out, and once he was out, he stood on his back legs, raised his arms, and showed me his teeth 😂 he looked like a tiny bear. He is so calm now, and settling into his cage well! (For one night!) I think the cage size, food, bedding, wheel, and hideout are what make him so calm. He seems so mellow!

  • I wish people spoke more about social hamsters. Sometimes their behavior can come across as stress but it’s not. I have a very sociable boy and as he’s gotten older he absolutely LOVES cuddles and spending a lot of time with me. Whenever he hears me he runs right over to the glass waiting for my hand. To others this may seem like stress but it’s absolutely not. If he doesn’t see me he’s happy foraging but the moment he hears or sees me he wants to cuddle and kiss me 😅 he enjoys daily massages 2 🥺

I wish there had been such good advice around when i was young, you are doing a great job and should be really proud of yourself!

  • Great video! You left out my favorite one though that I've been calling the "prairie dog look", which basically is when they sit upright on their hind legs, ears perked and look like a prairie dog that has popped up out of its hole. This is because they're listening carefully to something they find unusual or interesting, I had this confirmed for me when I had a hamster and it would do it every time the computer CDROM was being accessed and spinning up to speed. It made an extremely high pitch whine that was just on the edge of human hearing, and whenever it did it the hamster would immediately stop whatever it was doing, sit up looking alert and like it should have a big cartoon question mark hanging in the air above its head, it was the cutest damn thing! It was like if it could talk it would have said "And there it goes again! What is that??"

Thanks for including the thing about licking at the end, my hamster licks me a lot, especially when he all of a sudden notices my hand in his cage, when I've just taken him out, or a random lick here or there. It didn't seem like a problem, I just didn't know why he did it. I assumed it was because my hands were salty, but he licks me whether my hands are just washed or not. Now I think he might be licking me to say he likes me! (even though that is probably not the case because he acts like he has no use for me except as a seed dispenser...) lol

My Russian Dwarf passed away last weekend, I think it was down to stress from the bigger enclosure I got for him as he loved his own little space in his other cages. I wasn't comfortable with the new setup myself either but glad he had the opportunity to experience being in a detolf. I still miss seeing him each day as he was so friendly towards me and didn't show any signs of aggressive behavior. He did try to escape six times from the detolf though. He was the best.

  • So happy I found your channel. Got my first ever hamster a few weeks ago & your videos have been invaluable. Feel like Chester isn't a massive fan of me yet but I'm so glad after watching this video he's not doing all the stress behaviours except the screaming one but that's my fault & I'm learning to be slower around him. Just wanted to say a huge than you for so many amazing tips & tricks & I'm excited about seeing Chester grow over the next couple of years. Watched your free roaming video the other day & hoping to get a little enclosure for him to run around in. 🥰

  • The highlight of my Saturdays - tuning in! Such a comprehensive video with examples in video clips (so helpful!!) of hamsters exhibiting those behaviors plus advice on how to “handle” or react to those behaviors - fantastic! The key to becoming an excellent pet owner of any creature is to learn what their behaviors mean since they verbally cannot tell us what they need (unless you count barking or meowing - 😁). I hope in reading comments here you know what a hugely positive impact you are having on the hamster community. We were wondering what it meant when a hamster has its mouth slightly open - question answered ✅

  • My Lena (russian dwarf) was found laying flat on her cage. I picked her up and noticed she was barely breathing. Sometime later she started licking my fingers while her eyes were barely open. About 35 minutes later, she passed in my hands. This happened 8 months ago, I realise I probably could've done something to help her which would've allowed her to survive. I have never felt such an emotional connection with anyone or anything. I still miss her. Edit: I think Lena may have been a puppy in her last life. She was very sociable, always wanting my attention. Even when I had her out to play I'd text with someone. She would then climb up my arm and onto my phone, as if to say "I'm here to play, not them".

  • By the time we made it home, my old boi Ridley got my scent- and within three days, was comfortable with me. Hell, the first time I placed his wheel, he played so much it toppled(my bad). He was obviously distressed, and sat back to watch as I fixed it for him. Only a few days later he was climbing a little wall divider I'd put in his bin, dangling by his lil hands with his butt in the air. Once I'd given him a boost, he clamored right up and looked me straight in the eye. Ever since, he was a pure sweetheart, and would actively seek my attention whenever he needed something or wanted attention. Because of those interactions, he became a clumsy lil climber- which worried me at first, but it became very clear that he was doing it for fun. He was extremely smart, and context sensitive. Your little babies might have more personality than you know. Remember that, and keep them happy & engaged.

  • I would just like to quickly mention that another reason for bar biting or escaping is if you have two hamsters of the same species the male will sometimes try to escape when he smells that the female is in heat. The female may also try to escape to mate as well but usually it's mainly the male, again not every hamster does this and regular bar biting is not normal.

  • yeah bar biting is stress and boredom related, true. My girl does that to really get my attention that she wants out into her running ball, after I take her out two times (with a pause for drink and rest in her cage) she is happy. Also about the scent marks - They really do have little patches on their hips. My hamster had them very visible and I was worried he was ill but then I learned that those are scent packs, it looks just like a scrab on an injury. And licking is the most adorable thing. I used to have a hammy that licked my nose when I lifted her up to my face and once she found my injury and licked it and I called for my family to go see how she is trying to treat me.
