Late May and Early June is the time of the Deer Fawn Birthing it seems in the back yard. Fawns grow up to be Mothers themselves and here is on of my previous fawn guest, now a mother and the cycle completes..

  • It's so good how you show this. Too many people see a fawn and think it's been abandoned not knowing that this is what mommas do. Newborns don't have a scent for predators to find so leaving them alone is their best protection just as you've shown! You're so wonderful to provide a safe haven for little wild forest friends.

    • It's amazing the baby seems to have the understanding that its mother will come back. When she jumped the fence, I thought she abandoned her baby

    • This is also true for rabbits! Cottontail and domestic rabbits leave their babies alone and seem "uninterested" in them. Momma rabbit comes to feed her babies for about 5 minutes (usually in the early morning, pre-dawn) and clean them up, then she's off again. No scent means safety when you're too small, young or inexperienced to run from predators!

    • @@cazz1844 I did not know that! Awesome. I had a momma bunny as a kid. My mom told me no hands in her box for 2 weeks. I was scared because she'd pulled all the fur out from her neck and stuffed it in the box. After two weeks my mom let me open the box and to my delight there were 6 tiny little adorable bun buns just in time for Easter! All the neighborhood kids got to take one home when they were on their own. I'll never forget that special Easter surprise. 🐣

  • Deer use people all the time for safety. I have a herd of 10-12 deer on my property. I also have some coyotes. My personal pet is a Doberman who has a fenced in area for play and training. The deer realize the Dobe is never of lease and she hates coyotes. So the deer bed down and birth their fawns just outside the fenced in Dobe area. It’s all pretty amazing, the Dobe never barks at them and the deer never provoke the dog.

  • Years ago, when our daughter was in 3rd grade she would go out to the swing and uncover the grass from the snow. We noticed them that a mama brought her baby and they would sit in that spot regularly. Each year she came back and her little one, then one year a smaller, young mum came with her little ones to that spot. In the spring summer they come back running in the yard and sitting back under the trees. The kids hit a ball into the treeline one day and I saw mama and babies were around there. I got ony hands and knees and got the ball, but not before catching mama laying there, watching me. The babies were closer to me than I realized. I backed out on my hands and knees, telling mama that I meant no harm...just getting the ball! Boy I couldn't believe how big she was! We see them from in house or the porch and she sees us, but she didn't look that big! Love seeing them in the back yard, just sitting there, waiting for mama to come back!

  • I think you did everything right, left the fawn alone and let mom care for it. Again I think mom knows your house, is probably aware of humans but thinks it's safe. Natural predators avoid human houses so mom knew she had better odds with humans instead of Coyotes So cool she chose your yard to keep her little one safe. Moms are smart band observant. She knows predators avoid human houses and probably knew the dogs were a low threat. Cool ,,

    • It is amazing to see. I recently came in contact with some fawns, and, if it weren't for video's such as this. I would have probably interfered with nature. They were healthy and their Mom would come feed them every couple days. In Ontario, a lot of Canadians mistake fawns for being abandoned. It's also, horrible for the Mom who comes back to find her babies gone. They will cry out for weeks looking for them.
