I got a MagSafe charger for my iPhone 13 Pro Max and I’m pretty happy with the way it performs. It charges fairly quickly for a wireless charger and I like that you can still use the phone while the charger is attached. Plus is super compact and easy to carry around.
Does it overheat though?

Well done with the testing and sharing of data! 👏🏽 I have replaced all my cables with these newer ones through the house and car. If the lightning cable was going to ever make an exit, I can say I would use this over that and USB-C, easy. Then again, I love the MagSafe ecosystem and use the wallet and charger exclusively with a leather case. Also, much better on a desk or nightstand with that weighed charger vs. the lightning cable. Anyhow, GREAT video and appreciate the work you clearly put in.

Great info and quality methodology. Since I charge mine on my nightstand when I sleep or during my commutes, the lengthy amount of time doesn’t effect me.

Appreciate the work and I’ve used an amp meter as well. However my personal drawback for MagSafe is if you use the phone while charging it throttles extremely hard. If your test was from dead with no device interaction. It could be skewed.
Dude should have included the 30w or higher power brick too, magsafe can supposedly charge up to 14w or that may only apply to the MagSafe Duo Charger idk just curious

This was a fun video to watch. 1-I never use the 5W USB-A that Apples gives for free. 2-I use my Magsafe cable almost all the time. I don't think it takes over 100 minutes to fully charge. I seem to take much, much less time but that's neither here nor there. 3-Belkin and Anker make terrific fast-charging products for the home and car. I recommend them all to people searching for faster charging
I have the Belkin 3 in 1 charger for my 13 pro Max. It's very convenient for overnight charging. I only use the wired 20w charger for quick top ups if I'm heading out the door.

im curious to see what the temp what for the phone and bricks used during the charging process my guess is why the 20W cable slowed down towards the end was because at the higher percent it was getting very hot so it limited the amount of charge to not fry the battery and the mag safe probably doesnt get so hot and can maintain a consistent output of charge. overall amazing data collected definite thumbs up from me. :)
I am SO glad I stumbled across this video in 2023 first in my switch from" the cable shuffle"to wireless technology which I have been slow to adopt because of things I have read about charging speeds. I just upgraded from the 13 Pro Max to the 15 Pro Max and from an Apple Watch Series Six that I lost to an Apple Watch Ultra 2. I'm ready for the conveniences of wireless charging but not at the expense of prolonged charging speeds if the difference is drastic. Well produced and thought out video! Thanks!

Hello and thanks for your videos I saw a video review of Logitech circle and it say it have a face recognition and a level door door lock I was wondering if it is possible to set it to unlock your door when your face is recognized? Love MagSafe charging. I have the Belkin 2 in one and 3 in one and love them. Plenty fast and you know your phone is attached correctly and won’t be bumped off. Standard wireless charging is so much slower. I think most think they can just buy any MagSafe charger and sadly they charge so much slower. I think adoption is happening slowly but would have happened so much faster if there were more 15 watt options. The other thing I hate is having to also have special cases that cost more. I wish Apple made the magnets stronger in the iPhone so a regular/thin case wouldn’t have to be MagSafe to work.
Does having a case with a ring have any impact on the charging times with magsafe charger ?
Using the 5W cable alternative. Charging overnight so not an issue. I also have a vague feeling that the slower charge is kinder to the battery’s lifespan.
great video surprised the 7.5W Qi was not that much slower than the 15w Magsafe overall, jsut an extra 30 minutes consider the price difference in the two options
Was this test done after the MagSafe Firmware update that just came out?
Very informative video, but I have to point out that a key detail in the testing methodology was missing-if battery charging was optimized or not. I would imagine Andrew probably didn't tinker with the setting as the test was being conducted, so the playing field should be fair, but the point still stands that these numbers are missing an important context despite being incredibly useful. Great video.
This was 100% turned off because it largely wouldn’t work with it on. It would keep trying to stop and pick up when I needed it. This was also on my non-primary device so had full battery health

I love MagSafe. I’ve had my iPhone 13 Pro Max since release and I’ve only I’ve only had to plug in a cable into the lightning port twice so far.
Does MagSafe heat up the phone?
@@adalbert93_75 My phone has never overheated but it does get a bit warm at some points during charging, and other times it doesn’t get hot at all.
@@AgWhatsUp The increased temps are keeping me from using the MagSafe, I do think for long-term battery performance wired is still the way to go, but I agree MagSafe is better than standard QI wireless charging
@@adalbert93_75 Quite the opposite actually. I have a friend who owns a 12 pro max and its been a year of usage and his battery health is at 100%. And he only uses Apple's MagSafe to charge his phone through out the whole year. its 100% safe. Hope this answers your question

Is there any Magsafe Powerbank which is not limited to 7.5W charging power, but higher, like 15W? Seems like powerbank could not have this 15W charging capability...
I use the 20watts for charging my iPhone xs max but I want the magsafe charger when i upgrade to iPhone 13 because I don't want to have scratches at my port area and then as well its just easier to charge with the Magsafe.
My Belkin 3 in 1 charges almost as fast as wired fast charge. I love it.

Can you test the “Apple - MagSafe Duo Charger”
I'm failing to find iPhone 13 charging consistency with MagSafe puck+Apple 20W brick... 1st 0-100% test: 3h15m 2nd test: 3h45m...& it was on 95% (iI gave up) Now, with a third party brick, I also failed to get consistent results, but my best result was great... 1st 0-100% test: less than 2h 2nd test: 3h Temperature & perhaps Optimised charging calibration on a new iPhone may have played a part. I've seen up to 18W on both bricks, with it hovering around 11W for much of the charge during the faster tests, but hovering around 6W during the slower tests.

Quite the opposite actually. I have a friend who owns a 12 pro max and its been a year of usage and his battery health is at 100%. And he only uses Apple's MagSafe to charge his phone through out the whole year. So its 100% safe. Hope this answers your question
Sorry to respond so late, but MagSafe also has thermal detectors that will reduce charging speeds as your phone/charger heat up to reduce battery damage as well. I.e. drop speed to 7.5 watts or stop charging altogether! I use my MagSafe charger whilst playing COD: Mobile, and as my phone heats up, I notice it’ll occasionally stop charging. No issue for me, as I just want my phone held in place, it’ll charge again once that match is over. It never stops charging while just watching movies, videos, or browsing social media

That sounds promising, as I've just migrated to MagSafe a couple days ago with the MagSafe battery pack. If you want to talk slow, try charging your iPhone with a fully charged MagSafe battery pack and no AC power, with the iPhone and about 60%. I tried it at 54% and it didn't even make it to 100% and my second try was from 60% and, it made it to the top of the mountain.
The battery pack is designed as a trickle charger. It’s supposed to keep your phone at 100 all day to preserve battery capacity

I have also bought a battery pack which allows for the current lightning cable with the USB-C connector on the other end. I have used them both to charge my phone from 30 percent or so, duirng a day outing recently and it had reached the top of the mountain... namely 100 percent by the time I got home.
Uhhhh... this is not right. I use the 5W charger for my XR that it originally came with (1 hour less of battery life than iPhone 12 pro, which is what was tested here) and it does not take 190 minutes to charge. It takes an hour to get to around 60%. So, what's the issue here? Am I just lucky?
I think that "Optimized charging" option is turned on so that's why the 20W charger gets slower from 80% to 100%
Optimised charging stops the charging at exactly 80% until two hours before your wakeup alarm is set to go off. Then the remaking 20% is charged at the usual speed.
Does the faster the charge degrade the battery health faster? Also isn’t it best to only charge to 80/85%?
No, i have 14 pm and still 100% batteries 🔋 capacity. Just dont let it drip to low. Im always charging around 30% or so then again i use two phone. Note i use magsafe only which regulates the charging so dont damage battery 🪫

I was curious. If 20 watt charging is the absolute fastest and mag safe comes in at second, which charger will guarantee the longest lifespan of the battery? Does the faster charging method which I think would generate more heat, does it negatively effect the iPhones battery or is it better to use MagSafe to extend the batteries longevity?
less heat is better so theoretically the 5w charger (the slowest) would be the safest for battery health because it will basically never heat up your phone. That said I just use whatever I want, but don't charge past 80 percent. I feel that that's much more effective to preserving battery health than worrying about heat

If you use a 45W charger it would charge even faster. Ive seen my iphone 13 pro max take 38W charge.
From my experience it’s Not fast enough for my liking. A lot of that energy, no matter what watt charger you use, is lost through heat dissipation this happens with all wireless chargers. And heat damages battery life over time. Sure it’s a cool feature to have but it’s not practical at all. I need something snappy and more energy efficient.
Facts!!
Using a cable also generates heat. MagSafe is also more efficient in this than Qi chargers. It is still an issue but when you look at the numbers, it only takes 15 minutes more to charge over a cable versus wireless.
You should’ve turned off optimised battery charging for this test, to give you real numbers

In a way, yes..Fast charging is ok for your battery health as long as it doesn’t get real hot…it’s normal to get warm..just not hot..
Also..the longer it stays on charge, the warmer the battery gets
I slow charge mine overnight whilst I sleep.I use the 5w charger.I do MagSafe charge sometimes though.

Wireless charging has become popular in phones. But I think some manufacturers have added it to surprise buyers with a new feature. At the moment, it looks like technology for technology's sake. This may be why Apple has been slow to bring wireless charging to its phones. Most other devices do not use this technology because it is ineffective. If wireless charging using coils were effective, then most likely it would be often used in household appliances, in computers, etc. At the moment, wireless charging is inferior to wired charging. Chances are, wired charging will be very fast and safe in the future, and many of the problems with charging phones will disappear. 100% charge over the wire in 30 minutes, it looks real. Wireless charging in the form in which it is now has a low efficiency. Thick cases also interfere with wireless charging, which is bad. Apple has added magnets to its wireless charger, which is a good idea. It's a pity that MagSafe charges old iPhones very slowly. I think Apple could do more efficient and innovative wireless charging in the future.

I've stopped using Magsafe charging. It degraded my 12 pro max's battery so fast, like from 100% to 93% in a span of weeks after the ios 14.5 update. Then I had to sell my 12 pro max to get the 13 pro max. But in my iphone 11, I never use any wireless charging and just the standard wired charging, with the usb-c 20W Anker charging brick. It's battery health is still at 99% (take note that I had my 12 pro max November 2020 while my iphone 11 I had around January 2020). Even if I switched on the settings for optimized battery charging settings, Magsafe or any wireless charging degraded the battery health of my 12 pro max very fast. Still going to stick with a wired usb-c charging to save my battery's health and I always charge when I go to sleep. I barely travel nowadays due to the pandemic.
Yeah not true. I only use wireless charging and have no issues with my battery health percent on any of my devices.
