How I hacked a hardware crypto wallet and recovered $2 million

2022 ж. 23 Қаң.

I was contacted to hack a Trezor One hardware wallet and recover $2 million worth of cryptocurrency (in the form of THETA). Knowing that existing research was already out there for this device, it seemed like it would be a slam dunk. Little did I realize the project would turn into a roller coaster ride with over three months of experimentation, failures, successes, and heart-stopping moments. It reminded me that hacking is always unpredictable, exciting, and educational, no matter how long you've been doing it. In this case, the stakes were higher than normal: I only had one chance to get it right.

  • The introduction of a Bitcoin ETF marks a groundbreaking moment in the cryptocurrency world, merging digital currencies with traditional investment methods. This innovation could stabilize Bitcoin prices and broaden its appeal to a wider range of investors, potentially increasing demand and value. At the heart of this evolution is Sarah Jennie Davis, whose deep understanding of both cryptocurrency and traditional trading has been instrumental. Her holistic approach to investment and commitment to staying abreast of market trends make her an invaluable ally in navigating this new era in cryptocurrency investment

    • @@DeGuerre Hey man. I'm not a hardware/software geek other than RMA soldering which i once did. But i just want to say, cyptocurrency could one day fix what's wrong with this world. Government controlled/exploited inflation, inefficient/slow/expensive banking, and in some degree inequality.. And if you *really* want to dream; corruption in politics and illicit money streams. But that's only an option if crypto is regulated. Let's get this clear; on one hand, i'd like the odd chance of becoming rich. On the other, the chance of drastically improving the future world is also a luring prospect.

      @insanebmxthomas@insanebmxthomas2 жыл бұрын
    • @@DeGuerre I get where you're coming from as a lot of it is just cash grabs and speculative investing which in itself is really cringe. But unfortunately under capitalism developing and making a decentralized currency would be impossible if some didn't get filthy rich in the process. I mean imagine a world without the dollar? The whole military industrial complex is in place solely to keep the dollar from collapsing, if oil for example was traded in euros that'd be the end of the US financial system. That was the whole premise behind invading Iraq. If the worlds resources were traded with an open source cryptocurrency their would be no need for that, to root against cryptocurrency is to root for the military industrial complex and the united states grip over all asset classes.

Little known fact, the 68HC11 was used in the automobile industry early on for computerized control AKA ECU's... It was also the first mirco to use CMOS EEPROM. We called it the BUFFALO (Bit User Fast Friendly Aid to Logical Operation) at least that's the monitors name. Such a cool chip.

  • I believe what's need is to be able to duplicate the memory chip, so that you could keep trying while resetting the lock, or perhaps just resetting its flag if it's on the EEPROM, or in a clear text file. Could also use a debugger to bypass the whole checking logic and extract/load the private key, similar to how they reverse a software's activation logic, only challenge would be bypassing antidebugging and seeing through excessive abstraction and scramblings, but there has got to be a function, and there's got to be a way to make it load without a valid pin condition at whatever time it's needed, given that you find it

    • Lol, I'm still not sure who owned it. Sometimes he said things like: "I plugged it in some weeks ago", then it's his friend (the pro poker player, for which you don't need photo memory though) and some other examples where it's either him or his friend.

    • Its a fake story for sure. Someone with 2 millions in crypto for sure knows to secure the Private key offline. And its a must. There's no other way . no way someone buys a hardware wallet and doesnt write dow the Private key or seeds. ( Private keys are for such cases, you keep the offline and in safe place in case you lose your wallet or forget your password to recover our coins)
