I Stay In The Hotel De Paris, Monte Carlo - Worth The Hype?

I spend one night in the ultra-luxury and world-famous Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo in Monaco, A 5-star hotel located in the heart of Monaco with a pool and restaurants. It's been in movies, tv shows BUT is it worth the hype and should you stay here?

  • Almost $2K for a balcony room on the 1st floor - not even a suite. Holes in the pillow and some worn furniture pieces. The steak frites were overpriced and no excuse for a 40 minute wait. The meat didn’t even look very good. Breakfast looked good and public areas were gorgeous. But what was really unacceptable was the lack of warmth or even decent service. Strong pass for me, even if money were no object.

  • I lived in Monaco decades ago as a Nanny. It was run by a mafia and you had to tip everywhere you went, as the family of my charge would give me the money to do it otherwise they would totally ignore you. I speak fluent French and it made no difference at all to their aloofness. 😂 I have only seen the front inside of the casino which apparently was all re done in 2019. I was told that there is a secret underground from the hotel to the casino,but haven't experienced that. The best experience I had was to be invited onto some of the massive yachts. Even the vases onboard were the size of a fridge freezer, everything so large and money dripping off people with designer clothes etc. The road in Monte Carlo is the race track and many times I would drive with the children I nannyed for, pretending to be a race driver 😊 had great fun 🚗😊 Enjoyed your video, lovely to remember and to see the changes. I still prefer living on the Greek Islands, people are so friendly. Maybe you can visit one of them one day 😊

    • Interesting comment. Sometimes I come across videos from Monte Carlo and although the city is nicely located and the architecture is interesting in some places, the form of wealth that pours out of every building there is kitschy and repulsive to me. You write about the mafia controlling the city when you lived there, and I must admit that, looking from a distance, it also looks like that to me - as if people from poor backgrounds suddenly got their hands on huge amounts of money and behaved like little children in a toy store.

  • True class is accepting people for who they are In Germany, my daughter and I went into a very expensive clothes shop. The lady, whose family owned the shop, was lovely It was very clear that we were financially not her target market, but she was so friendly and relaxed with us, exactly how it should be - regardless of finances, we should treat each other with respect

    @amybishop9787@amybishop9787Ай бұрын
    • Indeed mark of true class in an establishment is that they treat everyone equally and make no assumptions about how much money you might have. The places that act pretentious are often for wannabes and people that want to pretend they are better than everyone else so they like feeling like the riff raff are being kept out while they get treated better, it's an ego trip. I'd wager this hotel is the place in Monaco that people traveling beyond their means want to stay in because of the name, meanwhile the standards and service has slipped and the truly wealthy have moved on to somewhere else because they don't care about bragging they stayed there.

    • While I agree with that attitude, I do think the location of the Hotel de Paris makes it hard to keep that attitude. Treating every tourist that goes in there as a potential billionaire and giving them the same treatment as they would a guest is simply not possible.

      @christianwestling2019@christianwestling201925 күн бұрын
    • Of course, and yes I would agree -a billionaire in a hotel is bound to get exclusive top class treatment because they’ve paid for it. Not every one can have the same level of service. But that’s not the point I was making. My point is that it’s not necessary to treat people with disdain simply because you think they aren’t financially viable. You can still be polite and pleasant. Also - one day - that person you’ve been rude to, may just become financially viable. It’s why the famous dress shop scene in Pretty Woman is so memorable.

      @amybishop9787@amybishop978725 күн бұрын

    • No they don't need to have the right attitude for tourists wanting to take selfies and those who book a single night for a novelty experience, these establishments exist to cater for the wealthy. If its yet another branch of a Premier Inn or Double Tree then the complaints of rude + poor service has legitimacy ...

      @ahoang9069@ahoang9069Ай бұрын
    • I get what you're saying but, after all, it's a private business and they can run it how they want. I'm sure they deal with a lot of threats because of their rich/famous customers they get all the time. The camera that Tim carries around is probably a bit of a red flag for them. • What I love about your videos is that they beautifully depict the feeling of tension that is inside these hotels. For 25 years I went into these places for business working for a luxury car brand , the biggest issue I had was simply feeling out of place, I didn’t grow up with those layers of granduer so when you finally do get in there you realise not only do you have the wrong clothes but you feel like you’re even having to walk differently. The other thing I found is many of the world’s great hotels are soulless , they don’t live up to the brochures or the drone shots. So in the end , I prefer to rent an apartment or house and simply try to live in whatever area I’m visiting. So your videos serve as a useful reminder to me, to remember what is real and what is not , real is your beautiful family and friends , and whilst being able to afford whatever you want is not the worst thing in the world, neither is it the best.

There is nothing wrong with heavy security but their presence should be concealed by being totally discreet, as to avoid guests feeling like they are under constant surveillance. Spent the afternoon on the beach, met a beautiful girl (Andree) and stayed two weeks in her apartment on the 21st. floor across from the harbour. Twice a week, we sat on the balcony with a bottle or two of Moet & Chandon, listening to Pink Floyd, and taking in the spectacle of the International Fireworks explode right in our face. Tim, I lost some money at that casino too, but not nearly as much as you had to pay for your one night stay there. The rest was free, no suspicious security guards or attitude either. • @@WalkWithMeTim Of all of these great comments, this is a good place for me to jump in. I have close friends who are old school billionaires, and we are in the $50-75m range ourselves - we and our billionaire friends are the opposite of the rude/spoiled rich folks you are describing. We get so much enjoyment out of the PEOPLE everywhere we go, staff, locals. Those people make our experiences wonderful. But one only taps into that wonder by being warm, genuine, and considerate. I always try to honor our hosts by speaking as much of their native language as I can and having a laugh with them at my poor language skills. So there are lots of nice rich people, but a visible, rotten bunch of them give the rest a bad name. Same is true with staff. We don't wear clothing/jewelry that stands out. We dress like Tim in most respects. But we have found great staff in most places. The places where staff are rude get no further attention from us. Monte Carlo is the last place I would expect to find good people, staff or locals. Everything about it is oriented toward over the top opulence and fakeness. Stay in Nice, visit local (non-tourist) family businesses, and you will meet some of the warmest, most lovely people anywhere. Then just take the train to Monte Carlo to watch "the show". And thank you, Tim, for your great work! Your videos are really good and enjoyable.

I think I paid about €700 or €800 a night for a much better experience, with a larger room in a higher floor, also with a sea view and a view of the Prince’s palace. Weather was chill but very sunny. 38:50 Breakfast wasn’t included. The staff were very polite and helpful, maybe because there weren’t many guests. Also the casino, just a few roulette tables open. The restaurant you mentioned, Le Grill, was closed for the winter. I went instead to the Le Louis XV, which is managed by Alain Ducasse. I had an absolutely amazing dinner, very expensive, about €400, but with champagne, wines, four courses etc. I was maybe the only diner there that evening, with amazing service. My lesson: always travel to the Mediterranean in winter. That was the practice in the XIXth century. You’ll have a much better reception.

  • Excellent video yet again - well done! The Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan, Egypt is both spectacular and interesting with its Agatha Christie connections. I loved it.
