  • Here on the Oregon coast when the waves move back out to sea in the shallows, there can literally be thousands of them that you are stepping on trying to get away from them. It’s really weird to see an entire 30-40ft section of sand rise up and move.

  • We use to catch these all the time when I was a kid. You just look for bubbles I. The sand as the waves retreat and start digging. We called them sand crabs though

    • I agree. It was a poor example of how to really catch lots of sand fleas with rake. Can totally do better. I just show quick little clips of my life. I try not to have filming or editing impact time with my daughter. I always want her to be the priority. I could have better targeted them. This beach was loaded with shells though. That was actually why we went there. Daughter likes hunting for shells.

  • As the tide runs out you can see where they are burrowing. You scoop during outgoing tide, and sift by using the ocean water, not by dumping everything ashore.. keeps the beach nicer too..

  • To far in, You mainly scooped old shells. Start like 20 feet back, Also you don’t need to scoop backwards. They legit come up when water is receding and into your scoop. Shake in water to remove sand and bam 30+ each time.

  • You don't need to go that far into the water. Where those ladies were standing was just about the perfect place to find them. 3-4 inches deep. Also, you can see their antennae when the water recedes. That will indicate a good cluster of them. I usually just go after them by hand but I really don't blame you with how shelly that beach is.

    • Usually target more sand areas. Also usually sift sand out and left with fleas. This whole beach was loaded with shells. This was an unplanned video. I try to film clips of my life to share without having filming and editing impact time with my 3yr old daughter. She will only be littler for so long. My longer serious videos I edit while she is in daycare. I didn’t even have a bucket to put the sand fleas in. Daughter took it for shelling.

  • Those aren't sand fleas. Digger/mole crabs. Sand fleas are much smaller

    • Seen mole crabs before. I understand they are often confused by many. They are indeed bigger, but they also look very different….mole crabs have a more segmented carapace and get much bigger. These were definitely sand fleas but pretty much max size. Mole crabs don’t stay on hook nearly as well either. Female sand fleas are often larger in my understanding and multiple small males will cling to them at times.

    • Normally can do that but shell substrate there was large and didn’t sift out very well. We catch redfish, pompano, and sheepshead.

  • Let the ocean rinse out as much sand and shells out of the basket before you pull it out. I've gone out many times catching sand fleas for my college class and for fun with my friends. It saves you the time having to pick them out individually. You will have mostly just sand fleas in the basket that way

  • You can just find them without a tool lol, just use your hands... You will see a little "V" in the sand as the water pulls away, you will most likely see a whole patch the V's. Then just scoop them up!

  • You'll catch a bit more with less hassle if you rake the sand and not the gravel/shell bits that accumulate. The sand should be fine enough to run out of the rake

  • Wait for the water to come up and then go back down, look for patches of strange ripples after the water goes down. If you dig then you will get 20 to 30 maybe

  • No. Wrong. There are MANY SMALL ONES that you missed, and that may not survive that far away from the tidal surf. The CORRECT way is to hold the rake under water and shake out the sand till only shells are left. The nice mole crabs are easy to see. The SMALL ONES are returned in the proper area. No need to bring way out of the water up on the beach. It is actually EASIER to do it the correct way. Try it

    • Life with 3yr old. LMAO. We were at that beach picking shells. Then I remembered rake in boat. Terrible place to rake sand fleas. Also had no bucket. Had one in my hand and only found 1-3 per rake. However in 1-2mins had enough for whole day fishing so it works. Just terrible demo of how to use rake. Couldn’t sift out substrate. Also had no one to film so trying to do it one handed. Lots of haters, but I love haters…they are the best fans honestly and engage a lot more. That is why video is viral.

  • First of all sand fleas don't sit by where all the shells that are crushed are at they sit higher up on the beach that are just saying so they're able to dig through it it was a nice presentation but you didn't completely wrong because Sam freeze don't sit that deep in the water even though it's a couple inches deep it's not where they sit
