Destined for the Bernabeu, Guti was loyal to Los Blancos for almost 2 decades. At the heart of Madrid’s midfield throughout an era of expenditure, from which Fiorentino Perez built “The Galácticos”. Ronaldo, Zidane, Beckham, and Figo came and still he held his place, adapting and grafting when needed to earn an eventual nod in Real Madrid Hall of Fame. Yet, was Guti as great as he could have been?

I'm no Madridista by any stretch, but Guti was one of my favourite players growing up. I wish he'd gotten the gametime and recognition that his talents deserved
Thing is that he was very talented but also very inconsistent
Wat a player
@@shingiraichingwaru8846 fr
K😢ze
@@fernandocalles1726 he was inconsistent because he didn't play enough lol, for example Zidane was inconsistent too but he played even after 3 bad games in a row and Beckham starting instead of Guti was a sacrilege.
Criminally underrated channel, there's nothing else like it. Please keep making these.
Thanks, working on the next video as we speak.
@@theretroroute delighted to hear 👍
Well said, Couldn't agree more 👍
Incredible channel ❤
Guti outlived 2 galacticos eras. Legend!
Guti was a maverick with zidane's poise and xavi's passing 🔥
Guti fue un auténtico crack, un artista del balón, inteligencia pura.
I’m madridista because of him He’s the most talented and beautiful player I’ve ever seen
That assist to Zidane is the greatest pass I've ever seen.
That fakeheel to Benzema was equally good. Just stopped all players thinking he was moving the play in another direction! This man was capable of world class quality!
Guti, The most underrated star in the world! Jose Maria Guti is the victim of Los Galacticos..
not a victim. he is real madrid personified. he and raul define what real madrid needs to be to win.
Victim of the great gangster of this country, Florentino, the Mob made flesh.
This guy Guti produced some of the craziest assists....
As a blau-grana fan of almost 25 years, I have to say Guti is a legend for me: for his class on the field, his “arrogance” in play and his commitment to RM. respect
Almost brought me to tears. Guti was a symbol of my youth and I am always grateful to his performances which defined grace of football in my life.
He was a fantastically gifted footballer&with many teams,he would have been the 'Point man' but with the glamour &,brand name of 'Lod Blanco's: comes mucho Politico!.So he was extremely limited,(not waisted) and restricted from showing how good he was!
Guti was just a marvel to watch he was just overshadowed by foreign nationals with better media attention from world sport journos. Same happened with Raul.
This channel is an absolute gem. Great vid again
Guti, i miss his charimatic moves with thé ball & his raised fist after scoring💪
As a small guy myself, passing and distribution was how I kept my place in school and then club teams. I had two ultimate heroes and teachers - Scholes and Guti. This guy's vision was beyond a joke.
Scholes as well. What amazing vision and passing range!
Guti was over 6 feet. He ain't no small guy
@@David-ws6do but passing was his thing, which was the point of my comment
@David-ws6do your comment was exactly what I was thinking. Saying shit like “As a small guy myself” without indicating the other person is small.. that’s basically abusing the “As a..” line. That’s rape
@@zesss the small guy part was referring to Scholesy
I always believe he is the best Spanish passer ever..
Somehow I always remember Guti as one of the greatest RM players.
His temper and his adaptability were great strengths imo, reasons he outlasted so many at Madrid.
Absolutely love this episode! It does justice to Guti's legacy as a player.
The beggining is wrong, Guti was never a Barcelona fan. That picture at 0:34 is from a small amateur tournament with friends, where a Barcelona supporters association offered them to play that tourney under their name, but he was already a Real Madrid fan. He just wanted to play a few games for fun there
Smooth 👌🏼
I just wanted to say I really appreciate these videos and the research put in - it’s a very high quality and very underrated also
I miss those days a lot...guti Maestro
"Probably one of my favorite Real Madrid players along with Zidane and Casillas" - A Barça fan
Shows you don’t have a proper rivalry. I am a rangers fan and have no favourite Celtic players.
Supongo que habrás visto vídeos de Iván de la Peña y si no has visto, era lo más parecido a Guti, dos fenómenos.
@@paulsloan8915no one can possibly have a favourite Celtic player 🥹 or a favourite Rangers player for that matter 😆 You're talking about fanatism, we are talking about enjoying the game
@@JuanEspana344 otro, lo pelat, eran de clase superior
He’s still a legend, idgf , I don’t remember him much but I just remember he’s a goat and part of one of the best players during one of the most competitive time of football
Özil is just the reincarnation of Guti, composure, technique and passing just like Guti
Guti was a superclass
Guti is an absolute legend, can the next video be about Javier Zanetti
Jose Mari Gutierrez Hernandez juss like Javier Zanetti aka the tractor were highly underrated.
@@brianmande5229 people stick the word "underrated" on half of the players on the planet. Most of them are rated correctly far as I can tell. As is Guti. He gets more than enough praise. But I guess you did a lot of research and interviewed thousand of what they think of Guti or Zanetti. Just sit down, and stop making stupid noises.
Great documentary. I only began watching Real Madrid towards the last few years of Guti’s career. I thought he was amazing but I noticed some Real fans weren’t as impressed as I was. I didn’t know that he didn’t get to actually play in the UCL finals, which is a cruel injustice and heartbreak I maintain Guti is one of the most gifted players ever, and many of his assists are otherworldly. I think with the passage of time more people will realize what an exceptional talent Guti was.
They had better. Very spoiled are RM fans to say the least. Talent alone clearly isn’t enough.
Only 20k subs. You produce masterpiece with every video. This channel should have atleast 1M subs judged by the quality. Hope you will never give up because your videos can only be described as ART! Greetings from Serbia ❤️
he has survived all of the big names.
Magic player
Thank you for giving this underrated player his flowers. Guti was always the midfielder I tried to emulate when I played. Crazy passing. 👏🏼
I don't care what any one says, Guti is great and a Legend
He was a legend. He embraced the magic of late 90's, early 2000's. Raw talent, self confidence and pure magic.
My favourite player.. you deserve so much more subscribers... more content like this and you'll have a million soon enough
What a player
Wonderful player
I loved this video. Narrated very well, the background music is perfect. Almost emotional. Great job.
Hi my man, I haven’t thought of this guy since championship manager 2001, glory days eh? Terrific work mate, well done 👍
He's more creative and among my first five creative midfielder of all time
If Gutti singed to Barca, he would be best playmaker of all time, too bad he wasted his full potential at Real. Criminally underated.
Sad to say you're completely right
An amazing player
Great video! Guti will always be the best CM 4 me
Another fantastic documentary about an unappreciated a dn underrated player at a time where many Legends stepped on the field. Thank you for another amazing work. As a suggestion for a future video, I would like a full story/documentary of Michael Ballack, one of my favorite players of all time and a Boss of the midfield.
The only madrid jersey I own has Guti on the back.
Which season?

Love this channel, so iconic and yet so underrated
I look forward to your videos all the time Retro Route! Keep on the good work, we fans will love your channel to the top! ⚽
Guti for me is the best Real Madrid player i've seen, top 3 easily with Ronaldo (Brazilian) and Michael Laudrup. Such a creative player, you put a prolific finisher up front and Guti will feed him goal after goal. Forget Zidane, i'd rather Guti in my centre midfield alongside a ball winner like N'golo Kante and i'm a happy manager! Everybody has their opinion and every manager has their own style, well that's mine
👌🏼💯🙌🏼
From Italy, my greetings, one of the best football channels no doubt. Keep going on! Your works are absolute gems!
Excellent video as always, thank you
Good to see another video & seems to be ages since the last one,I love these & would really love to see you do a stoichkov or hagi video, loved them from USA 94😬
Great watch, one of my favourite players ✔️
Guti is probably the most magical player that Spain never had, i mean his master pass assist are unique, like Zidanes rulette or Romario scoring, his assist where unique to him. It is a shame the lack of continuity so he could maybe do the same in the Spanish Squad, but talent as Guti, is like wild fire, you cannot cage it, or tame it, it runs wild for good and bad. Imagine a guy who could shine in the field, with the likes of Ronaldo, Cristiano, Benzema, Kaka, Zidane, Figo, this is no easy feat, and he did it . Football wise he is one of those so called Magicians, Footballers so rare you can only see them once or twice every 40 years. Is not about goals scored or number of assists, it is about the quality of them, he is just a Magician.
Absolutely beautiful and somehow melancholic
i love this content, it would be long until you have millions of views on your videos... top quality content
Awesome Video as always. Guti was great.
Retro Route! Just the other day I was wondering when you were gonna drop another banger?! Well, here we are! 😊
I always thought that if I make a channel about my taste on football and reviews, it would be almost exactly like yours. Don't know if it's only one person or several on charge of it, but even the voiceover is great.
Thanks, all me.
Zidane and Guti Actually made me Fall for Football ⚽ and Of Course REAL MADRID❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks for the vid!!!
Great video great player. Great club Great everything.
What a video my guy! Biiiig probs!
Beautiful video/documentary.
Please continue your work always love your videos
Un verdadero Genio! Fantástico Futbolista, una visión milimetrica para ubicar el balón donde al delantero le acomodaba. Rompía las defensas de los rivales con una facilidad asombrosa. Extraordinario !!!! Inolvidable!!!! Incomparable!!!!
Excelente reportaje
def on of my fav channel on yt rn
He was very underrated i actually thought he was from Venezuela or some South American country since he didn't play a lot for the Spanish national team
Killing it mate
Guti was the most consistent Galactico and football mastermind and masterclass❤
Great video
Omg, is that Bedroom in the background? You just broke my heart! Excellent video tho!!!
Love you videos man.
Love thee acoustic music,, zombie ❤
One of most underrated players abd what if player ever. Straight after queresma!
If nobody told you fam, I recognized that rendition of "Zombie" in the video. Absolutely class 👌🏿
Your channel is amazing! Love your videos. Can you make one about Okocha? Or Marcelo Gallardo? Great players but quickly forgotten in my opinion.
Yes I agree, I think there's a great Okocha documentary floating around youtube.
Turkey is not in the Middle East per say, while Istanbul in fact IS IN EUROPE. I am not Turkish but am in awe of just how much wererners just don’t care about anything east of Germany, quite sad really…
I asked for a Guti vidoe a long time cos he's one of my favourites passers of the ball. 1. Beckham 2. Pirlo 3. Guti 4. Schloes 5. Xavi 6. Iniesta 7. Messi 8. Ronaldinho 9. Ozil 10. Silva 11. Lampard 12. Gerrard 13. Riqueleme 14. Hazard 15. KDB Now, these aren't my rankings. It's just how I remember them. However, one thing for sure. KDB is at the bottom of this list for me. He's a great passer but all these guys have been way better. There's no competition for him like there isn't for CR7, Messi. These days we can name a handful of players but back in the day every team was strong. You couldn't name a handful, you'd rather talk about the team.
Ronaldinho Cruyff Laudrup Platini Guti Valdivia Zidane Iniesta Juninho Pirlo Gerrard Riquelme Xavi Schuster Salah Beckham Redondo Alonso Rui Costa De la Peña Valerón Modric Özil Fábregas Pedro León To name a few in a somewhat approximate order. Also, CR is a great athlete, just not a great footballer. He was outstanding in MU but then his switch in position and terrible ego made him an awful player with many goals scored.
@zackmyballs Cristiano a terrible footballer? You don't belong on this page.
A legend not recognized by Madrid
R Madrid supporters LOVE Guty ,he IS one the more loved player for fans.
these videos should be way bigger
Guti survived all
Great video. Please consider doing a video for Ariel Ortega- the enigma of enigmas
Great suggestion, "El Burrito" is on the list
Very underrated meastro
This guys passes are legendary. Too bad that he plays for Real during Galacticos era and the more famous guys needs to play to earn more money for the club. Really shame.
As AC Milan fan I hated him because he was really good
My favorite
The finest galactico talent📌
Your videos are incredible. If you ever make a patreon or "join button" for the channel it will be the first one I ever sign up for. Your work is amazing.
Elegant player with great vision and unforgettable passes. I was at the Bernabeu when he flicked that back heel to Zizou for his only ever hat trick against Sevilla. He definitely was not better than Modric. He didn’t have the lungs Modric has. He couldn’t do it consistently for 90 minutes. He also had a tendency to miss some wide open shots. Just trying to give a fair analysis.
Lesson to be learnt… Good to be versatile but even more important must be great or unplayable in a specific role. Otherwise you will find yourself on the bench.
Hi. I subsriced to your channel After i saw your tiktok vid on guti. And now I enjoy your yt videos. Please make a video on javier mascherano. He is one of the modern day defensive greats and part of the greatest ever team but he is always under the radar and so underrated. So please make a video on him and thanks. I will turn on notifications for your videos. Great video btw!
He needs his hero card in fifa
C’était pas le meilleur joueur au monde mais dans la passe qui casse des lignes dans les derniers 30m il avait vraiment quelque chose en plus
if guti had been in any other team (where the team didnt had too many galacticos) he would be a better developed into one specific role
Intro's music???
You should do one on xabi Alonso
Real Madrid at one time hoarded just too many world's best players and didn't realized what they already had was already enough. I remember they underused Steve McManaman and it was a waste of talent. Gutti was in the same case. Underused. Real Madrid was publicity crazy. They had just too many good players sitting on the bench.
Bibi Anderson said he had the best ball control hed ever seen.
