Juan Román Riquelme: The Man Who Messi Avenged
'El Torero' is an icon of Argentina, having built a legend status with Boca and Argentinos Juniors while also standing out for the national side across a decade. His time playing in Spain was limited and mixed, but the world of European football was astounded by his talents while they could. Rebellious, introverted, and infamous for clashes with authority, Juan Roman Riquelme's story lives on but more should know it.

Mexico is not South America, I meant Latin America. Apologies for the mistake.
believe you don't need to use south america in any particular circunstance, we are all Latinoamerica
Fair play for owning that mistake.
Yes it is, it’s all one and the same
No problem. Wonderfully presented work you have here, and I am now a subscriber.

One of the most underrated no.10
@Stephen Greenhorn however, the game was changing to a more fast paced, defensive-minded way. Juan Roman is the last true 10, but could not fit to the new playing styre, nor did he want to do so. Maybe the main reason he only had a couple of good years in Europe, while being the king of America. Being a 10 is more abundant there.
@@kristianfabriziomusic8295 David Silva
@@Ruscococo1 not as technically good
@@JogaBonitoCFTV David Silva is world class. Won the World Cup, Euros twice and was a key player getting goals and assists.
@@Ruscococo1 yes but not technically as good, plus look at that Spain team
For some reason Román is the closest player to Zidane’s style of play. Slow zero pace with tactical dribbling ability & a brilliant footballing brain with unbelievable vision on the field. Can dissect a whole team with one killer through ball pass while standing looking disinterested for less than couple seconds. A set piece specialist from a direct/indirect free kicks & cheeky corners. Both footed with good long range shooting power type goals. Juan Román Riquelme is arguable the greatest Boca Juniors player of all time if we agree that El Diego belonged to Napoli ?
Also Kaka
Yeah world class that Argentinan team in 2006 in Germany I watched him live in that quarter final argentina were the best team in the tournament he was the best player peckerman made a huge mistake tactically to take him off he controlled and bossed the game he was the kind of player that controlled the tempo of the game a true artist.
@@kadarabdi90 couldn’t agree more as I was back then thinking the same & believed Riquelme was player of the tournament & pulling the strings before Zizou flourished & got the award. Haven’t not been substituted by Jose Pekerman did the biggest mistake of the tournament by not only taking off the leader/player of the tournament but also didn’t introduce young sensation teenage Messi to toy with the German defence & win the game🙄
@@BoqPrecision I think prime Kaka had lots of speed like a sprinter.
Hit the nail right on the head! Roman is criminally underrated. When people talk about the greatest number 10 in Argentina, people forget about this man. Such a shame that he never got the recognition he deserved when playing.
I saw Riquelme playing. Absolutly Amazing. What a Player.
I had the privilege to share the same pitch with him in 1992 at a youth tournament. I should of grabbed his shirt!
i made a little documentary of the golden generation of Villarreal (Riquelme, Forlan , Senna ), i hope you show some love and support ❤
These documentaries are very professionally researched, if lacking the highest production values, but should still be on Netflix, or Prime Video, etc.
Thought it amazing, too. Not that I know all the facts, but I do like the unjudging voice that let's you decide for yourself. It's not that simple, of course, thanks to rhetorical trickery, but I think it's a job well done. Giving credit where it's due, focusing on the football than anything else!!
they seem well researched-seen a few of them
Riquelme is in fact the most underrated player ever

My favorite footballer of all time!
Great player! Thanks for watching
Same
My favourite also... Incredible football inteligence,I put him on the same level with Maradonna and Messi.
Riquelme was my favorite player of all time. I watched him play many times alive and I thought the world of football was over when he left Boca for the 1st time. I remember skipping school so I could listen to the Intercontinental game vs Madrid on the radio since it was mid morning. Thank you Roman for what you brought to my world!
People often talk about Zidane's first touch, but fail to mention Riquelme's touch and ball control wonder skills
He never won a world cup or copa, so these kinds of players often go into obscurity. Baggio and Riquelme were two players who sat on Zidane's talent level in my opinion, but by never winning major titles or playing in CL/for a big team they just fade into memory of football connoisseurs. I've never seen a player like Riquelme who you simply could not get the ball off of.
Always thought he was Argentina's best chance to winning a world cup but they didn't include him in that squad in 2010, to me he's the midfielder that Argentina is missing
The 2010 team was beyond redemption, Diego had no idea what he was doing.
The 2006 world cup generation that he was leading was monsterous, and should won the tournament,he certainly would be of great help in 2010...
Fifa maffia is best chance win a WC
@@AJayQDR Diego did his best to sabotage that team. he's a fraud.
Yeah, Diego should never been coach in the national team. He failed at other clubs before that too... Whoever appointed him should get fired...
when Beckerman replaced Roman i knew Argentina will lose ....the best world cup team i ever saw and the best player in the world cup hands down .
You couldn't but love Riquelme when you watched him play. This dude was an artist. Sometimes you'd forget he was actually an opponent.
A very old fashioned phrase in football is the best way I can think to describe a player who even during his career seemed like a very old fashioned type of genius and that phrase is that he is a player I would have paid good money to watch. There will never be another like him again, because a player like him simply would not make it to the professional game these days. The best I've probably ever seen at slowing a game down to the pace that he wanted to play it at. Truly the last of his kind and sadly misunderstood by many particularly here in Europe.
His style was unique for sure. Not many guys like that today, especially from South America.
I really loved to see him play. He was something special. A real streetfootballer like Zizou. Hoped to see him more successful in Europe but that`s okay, he had a great career and enjoyed the game. Greetings from Germany ♥
I think one of the reasons I find myself slowly falling out of love with football, is the lack of pure creativity you see from Riquelme. If you’re not an elite athlete these days you’re discarded no matter how much skill you possess. Take me back to the 00’s when it seemed every side had someone who could put their foot on the ball and create magic. Just discovered your channel, excellent work! Appreciate the amount of work and research it must take to find relevant footage.
Well said.. agree with everything!
Riquelme, Recoba, Saviola, Aimar, Valeron, Bergkamp, Le Tissier.... The top tier of talent to watch these days is smaller; say, Messi, Neymar, Felix... and the next tier isn't quite the same... Verratti, Fernandes, Eriksen, that young Norwegian with Arsenal? How I miss Ozil.
One of my favourites of all time, him, Zidane, Rui Costa, Davids. I enjoyed watching him at Villarreal and Argentina back when I was in High Schools. Yoh time flies.
Saw the "Yoh" and knew this was a South African 😁
@@chicovicente2845 🤣Uyazi!
Seedorff was technically better than David's
Incredible player. Always remember how he made the game so beautiful to watch. Great documentary
Since i've been watching football i have never seen a player before or since that played like Roman. A genius at control and protecting the ball, not even Zidane (the closest i can think of) played like him. A true one-off and a joy to watch.
I had forgotten about him until I saw Messi feuding with Van Gaal 🤪
The last enganche. The last magician. Roman.
the most elegant playmaker I ever witnessed, beautiful to watch
That was just the word I was looking for to precisely describe him... A true artist, pure football inteligence.
Riquelme is a classic CAM, while Maradona and Messi are classic CAM's converted into right wingers, mainly because both of them had an insane pace that would of been wasted if they played as classic CAM's
Unreal player!! Still remember that subbing in the 2006 world cup!! Why!! Took him off had messi on the bench 😳 to protect a 1 goal lead!! Still mad about it till this day!! One of the best world cup teams to not win it!! Riquelme was a Legendary player never underrated in my eyes
Totally
Can't agree more......till this date cudnt understand why Pekerman subbed him in the 71st minute. That's was the best Argentine wc team ever....better than that of 1986 or 2022.
Riquelme was an unbelievable player for villareal . Great technique , skill and vision . They were very unlucky not to reach the 2006 champions league final.
I think of Riquelme as a player who had a great "radar". He didn't need pace because he could immediately sense any player closing him down from all angles as well as picking perfect long distance passes. The Bulgarian Yordan Letchkov was similar. Slow speed but a great football brain.
Zidan exchanged his jersey with Requelme in his very last game as a Legend. and one day Zidan posted a photo with that Jersey
Thank you so much for this documentary. He was my inspiration for playing football as a teenager. I grew up watching Riquelme as part of the powerhouse for the "yellow submarine".
My favourite footballer … he was a thing of beauty
My best no. 10 in the 2000's
This is my favorite footballer by a big margin; will always miss him
The last classic 10.....a truly unique player
I have that 2000 Intercontinental cup match between Boca Jrs and Real Madrid forever burned into my memory. Riquelme was amazing
underrated, real talent
Juan Roman Riquelme is the living embodiment of a traditional #10. Too bad LVG didn't get that memo at Barcelona. Still fun to use in Fifa 07.
The last 10
explains the celebration Messi did on Louis van Gaal....it was for Riquelme. Justice served
10 = Riquelme I wish we had more like him the game is better with them.
He ended his career with the most assist of the decade 00-09 . My football idol. El torero
Un jugador magnífico 💙💛💙🇦🇷

I've never enjoyed watching a footballer more than roman. made me fall in love with football from the first sight
Great video, really loving watching these. Riquelme is a player I love hearing about, one of my favourites even though I never grew up watching him play, I learnt a lot about him this year, videos like these are great to find out more about him. Thank you! 😃

Great job making the video Thank you
Awesome documentary. This does justice to one unique football player, among the best of all time. Riquelme was a giant.
Maybe silly to some but this is my favorite player of all time, happy to see someone acknowledge how good / great he was
Thank you for this.
Any striker that played with Riquelme moved up a level. It's a shame he didn't find a place at Barca. Him, Etoo, Ronaldinho and Deco all in the same lineup playing Rijkard football would have been fun to watch.
They wouldn't have needed Deco (Porto to Chelsea) if Riquelme stayed. One of the dumbest decisions in Barcelona's history. They could've won the and 2005 (last 16 Chelsea exit) and 2007( QF Liverpool exit) CL titles with Ramon in that team.
Cuando recuerdo mi infancia este tipo se me viene a la cabeza, como hincha de BOCA JRS me hizo muy feliz . 🟡🔵🇦🇷 Mi idol,my hero. Only said thank you Roman for everything. Great video my frind, i New subcribe .
We knew him as the walking magician. Brilliant player on the ball.
How does this channel only have 600 subs? Great content!

Excellent player, but sometimes an excellent footballer could play in a wrong club, with a wrong coach.. By far, he's one of the last classic number 10
Great Video. Thank you, Reminded me of some great goals, I loved him when I was younger, and always tried to sign him in Champ Man. Nice with Radiohead in the background.
A man that looked like he was happy in his country, shame about the politics and financial constraints.
he has the nastiest 360 nutmeg of all time
Very good pictures bro! Nice job! Román is my fauvorite childhood player.
I am loving your videos. I hope you keep them going. I’m sure the subscribers will come soon….
Man awesome job at these documentaries, they bring me to tears 😭 every time. Can't believe how much time has gone by since these players were being transmitted on ESPN, Football now is a complete TRAVESTY
this channel is great.
Nice video btw... great work.
My favorite player of all time thank you for the video it's great
Mate, I love these videos. The nod to the god of the past is amazing. Please, please, please do a Pablo Aimar one
My favourite midfilder, the only one to play in much nonchalant, lazy and despirited way, suddenly finding the best solution, brilliant pass or dribbling.
I can proudly say am one of the lucky millions to have watched him play on TV... shots top.. dribbling top.. one of my favourites
One of my best foot ball player I really enjoyed watching him playing
Excellent job, very thorough and well researched. One piece of constructive criticism that I could add is, try to check how most of these Argentinean teams are pronounced in Spanish, some of the players and coaches names too, because most of the time, you were mispronouncing them. Again, loved the video, I just wanted to point that out. Great job.
Great Documentary, Mate!!!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed
What a player this guy was. He’s an “artist”with the ball at his feet. Absolute footballer legend !
Gran video de un gran jugador latinoamericano, ustedes los europeos no lo vieron tanto y no se dan cuenta de la eminencia del futbol que representa Riquelme por estos lados. No ganó todo en Europa porque no tuvo ganas. Literal
Great video as always. Kindly do one for ALVARO RECOBA.
In Entire Football history no one can touch a ball so smoothly like Roman...the calm quite tired soothing mid field GENERAL..
I loved Riquelme his vision his style of play was magic..... for me it's a travesty that Argentina didn't win the 2006 world cup the coach made a huge mistake not bringing messi on as a sub against Germany in the QF
What a player he was. That 2006 season was absolutely fantastic
What a player!
Your football biography channel is the best I have seen. Much better than the "Ears Guy's"
Would love to see the story of Juan Sebastian Veron..
Great documentary.
Love your channel, brings back some great memories from back in the day, when football still had more of a soul. I used to always pick Argentina in Pro Evo - the teams featuring Riquelme, Aimar, Veron, Crespo, Saviola, Ayala, Heinze, Cambiasso, Mascherano etc. Man they were loaded.
Same!! Good timess
Love your videos! Could you please do a video on Totti?
Really well done video. Could you do one for Redondo? Nobody really gives him the credit he deserves, I think partly because of his career sadly swindling out at Milan due to injuries.. You can make a fair argument to make him the finest holding controller to ever play the game during his 90s Real stint. A player to show any young kid who wants to play the game.
Definitely, one day. Thanks for the praise!
Love the videos! However the music is driving me nuts. Is that a piano cover of Paranoid Android on a loop?
Loads of young Argentines were called the next Maradona. Apart from Messi and Riquelme, I remember Ortega, Saviola, Gallardo, Aimar and d'Alessandro also being called that. If you were promising, Argentinian and could play as a 10 then someone would proclaim you the next Maradona. Only Messi has matched him but that's a high bar for anyone so no shame in others not reaching that level. Argentina have had some incredible players.
Messi is surpass him tbh
Substituting him vs Germany was the biggest mistake
What an underappreciated player, van Gaal is going to hell
I commend ur work
To this day, he had done probably the greatest dribbling ever... On Mario Yepes, with a backheel tunnel. Never ever I've seen something like that: truly, FUCKING, insane.
Got a link to it,, want to see it now😂
Not rven close to Robben or Maradona
The fact that you used the piano rendition of several songs from Radiohead’s OK Computer as BGM is a win in my book.
What a player.
Great job man🤌🏼
Thanks! Check out some other vids on the channel, more coming very soon...
One player i love so much
What an amazing player!! 😮
Bro your channel is fantastic! you will have a 100K plus subs in no time I promise it's all about the YT algorithm and people finding your channel, Also as a side note Can you do a video on Aimar, JJ Okocha as well maybe, I have so many more players I would suggest but don't want to be greedy Loool
