This new XC40 is the BEST Volvo! *Review*
Volvo has released a plug-in hybrid version of the XC40 - introducing the Volvo XC40 Recharge T5! It combines an electric motor with the engine to produce 262hp, which will help it reach 60mph in 7.3 seconds. But that's not where this new XC40 makes its claim to fame - this hybrid small SUV has a claimed fuel economy of 141mpg! But, as ever with hybrid cars, such an mpg doesn't come cheap, with the Recharge T5 having a price tag of almost £41,000!! So, is it worth it? Stick with Mat for his latest review to find out!

0:37 I don’t think you got those mpg to L/100km figures or those at 0:59 are anywhere near correct 😂
It’s a typo and should say 5,9l/100km
@@angusmcmichael 141 mpg uk = 2.0034109 l/100km (liters per 100 kilometers)
@@angusmcmichael wrong. 141 mpg is 1.7 liters per 100 km
@@robertjusic9097 UK gallons mate, it's 2l/100km Of course that's only what they claim the car can do in the official test, during which the ICE rarely kicks in, not what it'll be like in real everyday driving. Still the 60mpg he says he got in the video is pretty good for a heavy car with 250hp.
141 mpg (US gallon) = 59,9 km/liter
Something went wrong with the fuel efficiency conversion. The hybrid is listed as nearly 60l/100km which would be appropriate for something like a light tank.
😂
0:33 141 MPG is 1.67 L/100km and not 59.9 L/100km (3.93 MPG) which you calculated and 1:02 33 MPG is 7.13 L/100km and not 14.3 L/100km (16.45 MPG)
MadProductionsink: Yeah, I thought it was thirsty for a Volvo..
He meant km/L
33 mpg is around 8,6 L/100 because it is imperial gallon, not US gallon.
141 miles x 1,609 km (km in a mile) = 226.869 km 226.869 divided by 4.546 litres (litres in a BRITISH gallon since carwow is obviously a British channel) = 49.9 km in one litre And now all you have to do is simply divide 100 km by 49.9 (the amount of kilometres this car drives in one litre) and you get 2 litres per 100 km

Every Volvo looks like a car from the future now. Remember those boxy shapes from earlier...
The new ones look nice and are good but i will always love the 240 and the 740
Yeah, like the 240 from the past which was an icon that called itself a "family car".
Those boxy shapes were some of the strongest and safest cars ever made. Volvo have been criticised for reducing their focus on safety in order to go mass market and sell more cars. Guess its a catch 22!!
I really like my Volvo's I've owned 2 including the V60 I've owned for 6 years.i do have a soft spot for the old V70 estate and 850 R estate.i do like the S80 V8 that will be my midlife crisis vehicle.

Mpg , not L/100km

@Mat Watson cars - Liked the review. Touches all the points and difference between a normal XC40 and XC40 PHEV. It would be great, if in future you can do a comparison video between the BMWX1 2020 and XC40 PHEV 2020 (or even the normal ones ), as these 2 really priced nearby and come into the same segment
Agree, got the normal T3. Great daily car. Hybrid yes if I was living in a house with solarpanels. - One big minus is the lack of back seat light in the roof. There is nothing...
Would love to see more PHEV reviews! Maybe a look at BMW 330e, Passat GTE and Mercedes and how they compare to their normal versions.
when I hear volvo T5 I think about one of the fastest station wagons from the 90's. yellow paint with dark grey wheels!
chris7jakarta Me too! Although, me being a V70 driver, for me it’s gold paint. ^^
Luke Mallory Thanks for clarifying! That‘s a good name for the colour..!
I have for couple of years the first ever real life PHEV, the Volvo V60 PHEV : 2,4 liter, 5 cylinder turbocharged diesel 215hp driving the front + 70hp electric motor driving the rear. This is the best car I ever had! The real life pure electric mode gives me ca 35km range, which is enough to cover my work comute and moving around the town. Some weeks I don't even use the diesel engine at all. On the other hand I love to switch to sport mode to feel the 285hp time to time :-) My long term average is 4,8 l/100km. The car has its own charger on board, all you need is a electric socket, but I have installed a wall box in my garrage. I can hardly imagine for what I can replace this rocket. Only Mercedes is making diesel phew now.
Hi Mat... The video quality was really good. Finally you guys added a light for interior shots instead of pumping ISO up, which is appreciated. 👍
I’ve had mine for two weeks now and I love it. It could have come with more options as standard though
Should get the Lynk & Co 01 then
Am I dreaming? FIrst YT video ever without a question mark in the title! ...? Nice work carwow!
Many thanks for the review. I have got one now, nearly new, my first car with any screen on the dashboard!. The challenges I find are: it is wider than my 740 DL Volvo which I have had for 30 years! The phone connection to display Waze maps on the screen doesn't always work. The Speech command is very varied at finding what I ask for, e.g. if I ask for Radio4 - it can't find it. The camera view for reversing is misleading - looks like much more space behind than there really is but I expect I will learn how to interpret that. But I will get the hang of it having only had it for 6 days.
I'd love to see them make plug in hybrids with battery size options. Like a 20 mile, 40 mile, and 60 mile. I think that would help with sales and they could charge a premium for it to make money while satisfying demand. And sane goes for their pure electric models. Having increments of 34% increases. Like a 250 range model and 335 range. Some people are willing to pay the additional $10,000-$15,000 for additional range.
Does this car have a reverse camera?
141 MPG (UK) is the equivalent of 2 L/100 Km, not 59.9 L/100km, and 33 MPG (UK) is 8.56 L /100Km, not 14.3 L/100Km Just FYI ( 0:30 and 0:58 ) Keep up the awesome videos Mat
I've got the normal T4 AWD XC40 and if you drive super smooth you can get nearer 40mpg.....!! It's a really great car, 18 months of ownership and its been faultless....
Omg the extra bonus unexpected drag race was just amazing
I've test driven the normal version of this car and it's absolutely gorgeus to drive. Such a great car.
0:35 I think you mean 60 km/L, not 60L/100km
Exactly even a bus doesn't need 60l for 100km
Haha
in metric system don't they do ?L/100km
Hardy Hydra yeah but it is not 60L for 100km xd
@@hhhydra2397 we do, but 60 km/L is about 1.7L/100
Just shows that it depends what you use a car for and how its funded. This hybrid is great for short journeys but begs the question why you'd spend 41k on one, especially when you must layer the higher VED as its more than 40k. For distance driving, 31mpg is dreadful and even an AM Vanquish V12 can do that at a cruise.
Pains my heart to see the T5 -badge on a four/three cylinder
Olli Lehtonen I agree! Although it pains me to see that bloody engine anywhere near the big Volvo’s
Exactly, these new engines are shit and just display pure laziness. 0 soul, 0 performance. Sad, owning an S40 T5 AWD and then I look at these new "t5", at least I am happy I got to own a proper Volvo before they ruined them.

I like that Volvo kept the exterior simple and just added a "Recharge" badge. I don't like the trend of adding blue/green accents all around hybrid or electric cars' exteriors as standard. I just want a regular car that happens to be electrified. For example, the hideous blue chromed front grille on the BMW 225xe (2 series phev).
Or the fugly alloy wheels that look like a three pin plug....yeah i looking at you Mini.
Hello! From Texas USA. I like your channel I wonder when you going to do a volvo XC 90 review?
I was searching for this review for 4 weeks now. This is awesome and all I needed! Carwow is the best there is in car reviews.
These new Volvo hybrids are good but the "old" V60 D6 is the best. The amazing Volvo 2.4l, 5 cylinder coupled with the electric resulting in total 640 nm of torque and 285hp. Pulls like a tank. You can go fully electric to do your groceries. Still if you want to pollute the environment like a real petrolhead there is always the 5 cylinder waiting for you!
1:35 His voice😂😂😂😂
Both nice cars look stunning, love the drag races matt does really good fun to watch 👌👍
Hey Mat, interesting results, it makes me wonder how the results of a 330i vs 330e G20 drag would pan out :) Maybe you can test that in a future video.
Mat how much is the fuel consumption on this Volvo?
Even living in the zombie apocalypse id still end up watching this 🙏😂🤙

I cant find the funny
Please review the actual recharge (fully electric version) when it comes out, and put the recharge, T5 and the plug in against each other

Would be so badass if this had the T8 engine with 400hp and 640 NM
Jeep Cherokee trackhawk wants to know your location.
The electric one has 400hp, insane.
What attracts me about the video is one thing - the thumbnail.
Would like to see a review on the Lynk & Co 05. It's based on the same CMA platform as the XC40.
Volvo xc40 is Volvo's CMA platform. It's Volvo's Concept 40.1 The designer is Thomas Ingenlath, a German who once worked with VW/Audi. Volvo's CMA platform share some parts with their SPA platforms. Some Geely models will share this platform but it is a Volvo platform. This is to clarify for those mistaken people who keep calling Volvo "Chinese." Cars today are more international than ever. Geely owns 10 percent of Mercedes Benz. It doesn't make Mercedes Chinese. Jaguar is owned by Tata. It doesn't make Jaguars Indian cars. And even Bentley has VW parts in it, since the great British company is owned by VW. And Chrysler is owned by Fiat. And I don't hear anyone calling Chrysler Italian cars. I've read nothing that points to Volvo's quality being any worse than it was under Ford or when Volvo was independent. In fact, the quality has improved and the designs have improved. The cars are as crashworthy as they always have been. Things can change but now Volvo is a Swedish company owned by a Chinese company and the cars are European engineered and designed. So are Polestar who use the same engineers and designers as Volvo.

Recharge is for the electric XC40 coming out this year 😉
Nope, that will be the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric. Recharge now is used for all Plug in Hybrids and Electric cars.
@@nickr.t.7003 WELP
I thought that was the case too. I thought the recharge was a pure electric and the combustion engine cars were getting wierd names like B5 etc. What fucks me off is that the number in the engine title of the car doesnt reflect the cylinder count any more. A T5 should be a turbocharged 5 cyclinder, not a 3 cylinder, or even a 4
@@craig855s Agree. They're all 4s. That designation is confusing.
THANK YOU for quoting the real world economy figures for the three use cases; PHEV, EV and hybrid modes.

141mpg -59,9lt/100km.... hahahaha :)
It's km/l
I think these are the best looking SUV. Looks very tough 💪
5:55 since it's a small battery fast charging would cause faster battery degradation. Most hybrids only support 3.6kw charging (some do 7.2kw) as the expected use case is to commute in EV during the day and charge at night at home
This. I don't understand that a car journalist doesn't understand this.
This is the one review I was waiting for. Great!
141 mpg (UK) = 2 L/100km. This looks very doubtful by the way
The best NEW Volvo, no way this thing will be as legendary as the 240
Julius The Shark I would also prefer the modern estates over it anytime. XC variants of those for the countryside and the V40 for the city.
Need For Swede That’s a huge argument against buying a new Volvo. I like the looks, but those engines… …just no.
You can't compare the "starting from" prices for petrol vs. hybrid models! Petrol models comes here in Austria from Basic trim, over Momentum and Momentum Pro to R-Design and Inscription. The hybrid model now (for model year 2021) starts at the R-Design trim. So it's comparing apples to oranges. The price difference between a good equipped T4 FWD 190 hp and the similar equipped T5 twin engine 262 hp is about 1700 Euro. That's just the difference of the power levels. And yes, I ordered the T5 twin engine already and nearly can't wait for delivery... ;-)
If you add a destination into the sat nav the car will use up the charge intelligently to maximise fuel efficiency. Would have been worth a mention. Still, the 63mpg you got in hybrid was respectable.
Does it have a reverse camera?
Iam impressed with the output of the 3 cylinder 1.5 ltr engine...180 bhp seems if chucked in a small (fiesta size ) Volvo. And the plug in knew it was going to win the 50mph pull, heck even it's rear wiper was waving goodbye😀
How the economy is 59,9L/100km
mäkSä i didn’t understand that as well
That's not a hybrid, that's a TANK :D I think I will rather buy a V8 Mustang, to save some money on fuel...
Their calculation at 0:36 is incorrect the number should be 2.0L/100km. Meanwhile, their real life figure of 33 British MPG work out to around 8.6L/100km, while 63 British MPG works out to roughly 4.5l/100km
If it is really 141 mpg, it should be 1.67 L/100km
its the opositte bro.... in UK they measure economy in mpg ( miles per gallon ) . He said 59mpg not 59.9L/100KM ...... 59 mpg is so good it means around 4.5L/100KM
I was supposed to demo one of these before lockdown ☹️ hopefully still get one after all this is over
Those with an eagle eye will have spotted at 0:53 that white car was in fact a T5 with the Polestar package giving it an extra 50nm, better mid range power & more rear bias. This reflects even more positively how fast the front drive hybrid would be in the real world.
Conclusion: It is absolutely not worth the extra money
And complexity....
A similar performance Diesel is even more expensive than the hybrid and returns similar fuel savings. Yet people buy lots of Diesels don't they? If you're going to put a lot of miles on the car it pays off. But the real reason why manufacturers are making these hybrid options is to future proof their model range. Give it some 10 years and ICE only vehicles will be priced out of the market via emissions tax, 20 years they'll be banned from sale outright.
@@BigUriel hybrids will be classed in the same category though as ICE wont they? I dont think hybrids will get away with much tbh basically negating paying an extra 10 grand for one. Or will the tax band be a lot cheaper?
It's much better as a business car because of Tax deductables in many countries. It' slike 90% (hybrid) vs 50% (for Diesel/petrol) or something here..
who made the conversion between mpg and l/100km? never let him pay for anything
It matches the overall degradation of video quality lately

Dear Mat hi! It's been quite a long time that I'm watching your reviews. They're great! Unfortunately, your team can't help me find a better deal for a car since I'm in Greece. Well . . . I would like to ask you a few questions about XC40. The Recharge T4 R-Design has paddle shifters on the steering wheel whereas the Inscription one doesn't? I'm about to decide between XC40 T4 Recharge and a BMW X1 25e (in Greece as well there is a tax benefit for choosing PHEV corporate cars). I like the way XC40 looks but I think that BMW "feels" better on the road. I would really appreciate your view on this. Thank you very much in advance. Keep up the good . . . reviews! Best, Tassos.
