  • I think they're missing Shaq's point: if a team gets to 3 and 0 with that combination of coaches and players, and then goes 0-4 the rest of the way, you can't blame all that on the coaches. The player part of the equation has to take some, maybe most, of the responsibility. I feel that's probably true here too with the performance of Philly's stars. On the other hand, the turnaround by Toronto has a big coach's element, as he's made it possible by his adjustments for his players to play their best, most effective games.

  • I get where Shaq is coming from. To a degree he was defending coaches. As well as, Shaq is built different from Barkley and Kenny. To be a 4 time champion, as dominant as Shaq was. He has it to the core where, that’s on us. We have to go out there and get it done. He’s just missing their view that, regardless of greatness and drive. Adjustments because it’s a team game, the coaches philosophy etc is still needed to bring it all together. Like Kenny said. Blowing a series lead on 1 team is one thing but for the most part, every team you go to. Yeah, you have to look at the coach.

    • Actually, Shaq isn't wrong ... because the evidence, to him, is anecdotal. Jackson didn't spend any time coaching him and concentrated on the other guys, same thing with when he was on the Magic. Both of them essentially gave him free reign to dominate as he pleased, but coaches definitely do have a game plan, philosophy and a methodology to how they coach teams and they do set how a team ultimately operates. The only thing is that Shaq doesn't see it because he was just so dominant that Phil didn't really need to give him any instructions beyond "bully the opposite guy in the post" while he went to work with Fisher, Fox and, of course, Kobe and the rest. Shaq's just offering his perspective: he was that dominant he didn't really need coaching.

  • If you lose 3-4 consecutive play off games to the same team, it is the coach's fault. If the coach couldn't make good adjustment from game to game then it is their fault 100%. A 7 game series is a coaching battle, which coach will make good adjustments then the other coach will counter next game.

  • the Biggest problem for the Sixers other than lack of killer instinct is the narrative on them. First of all EVERYONE (with the exception of Shaq who predicted a sweep) doubted they would even get past the first round. With the way they ended their season against equaly matched and better teams..people were SKEPTICAL they would get past the Raptors playing the way they did. ALMOST EVERYONE FELT LIKE THAT. Then they quickly went up 3-0 and everyone changed thier tune and said they were contenders again! The reality is this series was ALWAYS going to be hard fought...its just that everyone was surprised they were in a position to sweep it. Had the series went Sixers win game 1 Raptors win 2 Sixers win 3 Raptors win 4 Sixers win 5 and thats how its 3-2 NO ONE would be talking about Rivers as a bad coach or his history of collapse etc etc... So the Sixers actually are where theyre supposed to be at this point in the first round. It IS a hard fought match up and the drama is completely overblown for the most part.

  • Coaching does matter and Shaq knows it. What Shaq is arguing is that if you're up 3-1 and you end up losing that series, don't be blaming the coach. Shaq says that it's ultimately up to the players to win. And if the players end up losing a 3-1 lead, the players are the ones that should be taking responsibility and not the coach. Although, I can somewhat understand this sentiment, I do believe it's a full team effort, and that includes the coaches.

  • If players miss open shots it is not on the couch. period. you can not step inside the game and make the shots for them. Yes, you can try to improvise and make some changes. But at the end of the day it is the players who have to make the shots. If the team is being outplayed and if it struggles to create shooting opportunities it is on the coach. But I actually don't remember this being the case with coach Rivers.

    @couch-fosbos1147@couch-fosbos11472 жыл бұрын
  • I see it from both perspectives the coaches are not out there playing defense or making shots. As for Shaq when things go wrong the coach during the regular season and the playoffs if the team underperforms players will get blame but the coach will usually get fired. They're not out there playing defense or not making shots it's the players job to go out there and give it all they got. But sometimes that doesn't always happen so they look at the coach. You can coach players to play the right way but you can't coach passion, determination, Pride, and competitive spirit. As for Chuck and Kenny I understand where they're coming from were coaching matters because I remember a It was the Lakers against the Utah Jazz. Mike D'Antoni was the coach at the time and it was clear the Lakers were going to lose that game and Kobe had the stare of death towards Mike D'Antoni. He was Furious because in Kobe's Mind He's like you don't know what the hell you're doing. That is an example of how coaching matters same with the Warriors they had a losing record for a long time then Mark Jackson comes along and instills confidence in a young Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. From day one he called them the best Shooters in the world they started to turn it around and build a foundation. And then we all know what happens Steve Kerr comes in picked up where Mark Jackson left off.

But he also understands that the coach isn't playing, YOU the player is. And coaching is really about bringing out the best in those players, not just putting them, with strategy, a position to win. You up 3-1 and you lose the series...80% of that is player malfeasance and %20 of coaching malfeasance. Strategy only works within the players abilities. If the player isn't playing up to his abilities, especially if healthy is ALL ON THE PLAYER.

The Warriors blew a 3-1 lead in the finals but we’re not going to blame Steve Kerr for that. Him saying that coaching is completely irrelevant though is just completely wrong. He was coached by two of the greatest NBA coaches of all time in Phil Jackson, and Pat Riley who both lead dynasties.
