The Key Bridge disaster was caused by the oppression of workers

24 hours after Max returned to Baltimore from East Palestine, Ohio, the shipping vessel Dali slammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge, collapsing it into the Patapsco River. The catastrophic collision and collapse of the bridge claimed the lives of six immigrant, non-union construction workers who were working the night shift at the time, filling potholes on the bridge. In this interview on The Valley Labor Report, Alabama's only weekly union talk show, hosts Jacob Morrison and Adam Keller speak with Max about The Real News Network's coverage of the bridge collapse, the connections between Baltimore and East Palestine, and about the conspiracists and "anti-woke" grifters who are trying to capitalize on this tragedy for their own gain.

  • Maybe I'm wrong, but to me it comes down to the question, _"do we exist to serve the economy, or does the economy exist to serve us?"_ It's absolutely shameful that America won't guarantee healthcare and housing for its citizens and workers, but has the arrogance to constantly brag about being the richest and most powerful country in history. Solidarity forever ✊

    • The.entire world economy is serfdom (Agenda 2030), based on stay at home, 15 minute cities,e- commerce, A.I. start-up networks and the Stock Market Exchange. More needed inspections and enforcement in all areas of Commercial transportation and S.E.C. As a cross country truck driver I absorb the impact of these discrepancies, especially since the Truckers lost leverage by not being Union. We have sleepers on the trucks that assures us as laborers stay on the road away from home and and a normal life. Since 2007 all states lost revenue relying on a non-union abor force called Privatization. State employees were let go. those job losses kept the dollar bill from circulating in all communities, these companies went outside the U.S. for manufacturing credits. Profit and dividends is now the priority. The only concern in commerce is how they can satisfy their golden key stockholders, and the fact is government is not even concerned about your personal safety. Look at the money you spend on Cable TV Companies, with commercials you pay for, that broadcast disclaimers of Pharmaceuticals that can terminate your life. Why are these products advertised and why do people tolerate this action?

They charge you interest in the money the owe you. It's your money. They never call you back. So all the money they owed me. I didn't get one red cent.

    • @bertbaker we serve the economy to keep the country running and to pay our own bills . Historically France has been said to have the best healthcare system in the world, and they pay through the nose for it. Canada has socialized medicine for which they wait months, maybe years for testing and treatment . Neither system is perfect, and USA’s system is a combination of both. Stay healthy and try to avoid using the system for anything other than informing yourself on how things are going. Get a blood pressure cuff and learn how to use it as well as a glucose meter. Learn about a truly healthy lifestyle and decide what works best to keep yourself resilient. There are many fine MDs andRNs online who give sound information and guidance for the cost of having an internet connection.

    • @@snuder9832 why is there always trillions available to spend on war but there's never billions for housing and healthcare? If your dependent on your employer for housing and healthcare then it becomes compulsory. It's much easier to exploit people if they're in a desperate situation. It'd be a lot harder to get people to work at Walmart or other low pay menial jobs if they weren't worried about being homeless or starving to death. 25,000 people die of hunger *everyday* even tho we produce more than enough food for everyone. The economy has been designed to force most people into these desperate situations so that a tiny fraction of folks can live in unfathomable opulence. People will still need to work, but the economy can be set up in a way that doesn't condemn billions to brutal lives if oppressive drudgery.

    • Capitalist profits depend crucially on abuse of labor and the environment. Eliminate the malfeasance and I wonder if there is a workable business model that can support your and my comfortable 21st century high tech lifestyle. Maybe there is (for starters, make banking a public utility, not a profit center for rich folks), but we are nowhere near the kind of societal consensus needed to even approach what is necessary. Good luck overturning our deeply ingrained cultural religion of fake democracy, "rational" markets, endless economic growth, and Darwinian economic individualism. I do not see how you get from there to a government that actually enforces the public interest. I am open to more hopeful conclusions, but to me it looks more and more like western civilization is way past its sell-by date, if it could ever have been sold in good conscience to begin with (and there are numerous exploited / genocided peoples in the world who would tell you it was not).

  • There's a disconnect w Max, when he'll blame "corporations" for the demise of the American union worker, and yet never mention U.S. immigration policy which is an assault on the working class' wages. The fact that the workers that were on the bridge- that sadly appear lost- are foreign national immigrants, is not seen as proof positive that the U.S. worker is being supplanted in the pursuit of profit by the reduction of labor costs, highlights this disconnect.

  • The closure of this port and the detour around the collapsed bridge together with putting the people dependent on the bridge and the longshoremen on unemployment insurance is going to have a devastating effect on our economy because it’ll cause a loss of demand and an interruption in the supply line that’ll drive prices up on everything that nobody on unemployment can afford. To make higher profits the factor of greatest concern in the decision making process is obviously a big mistake. Wall Street should realize that it doesn’t work for a sustainable business model! Meanwhile, the empire is crumbling faster than reporters can keep up.

Contracts fall under Davis Bacon law, meaning wages are union scale. Two way radio communication for supervisor and crew and on and off shore. Coastguard or homeland security on standby would also be a prerequisite. On most DOD contracts.
