Hamas: How Israel created its own nemesis w/Paola Caridi | The Chris Hedges Report

Hamas, like all resistance groups, from the African National Congress to The Irish Republic Army, are as demonized as they are misunderstood. Hamas is a religious, nationalist political movement. It is not, despite what Israel and Washington say, a terrorist organization-although, like most resistance groups (including the Jewish militias that created the state of Israel), it has used terrorism as a tactic. Because those on the outside do not understand what went into making Hamas-the steady drip of humiliation, violence, and impoverishment that define Israel’s Occupation of the Palestinians-Hamas and its ideology appears incomprehensible. But from the Palestinian perspective, Israel has left the Palestinians with no other choice. Journalist and historian Paola Caridi, author of "Hamas: From Resistance to Regime," joins The Chris Hedges Report to discuss the roots and nature of Hamas, and what we miss when we unthinkingly cast Hamas as nothing more than a terrorist organization.

  • I was in the Army, infantry in the U.S. war against the people of Viet Nam. Many years later I learned that the Vietnamese people had been resisting occupations by many countries for hundreds of years. Imperial powers are led by people who are “certain” that they can take over another peoples and then everything will be fine. Resistance is key to the survival of humanity. NEVER STOP RESISTING!

    • @@joshuafrank4643you must have seen the documentary Tantura when during the creation of Israel they were raping teenage girls. Hearing it from the people who did it now in their old age and laughing was disgusting. Fast forward to 2023 now Israel is claiming that Hamas used their same tactics without any proof especially since they had GoPro cameras to broadcast their atrocities. When The NY Times wrote an article about it the families themselves debunked the story. Don’t forget they lie about almost everything (40 beheaded babies ) etc

As for the killing on 10/7, ISRAELI witnesses have said that the IOF are responsible for most of that. They came to take hostages to use as leverage, which happens in these situations.

    • This video demonstrates how wrong your statement is. Heard of Owen Jones? How about The Young Turks? Perhaps you know of the BBC and Al Jazeera. Please explain what you mean because Israel is not afraid of anything, and they're currently wrecking the Gaza Strip in plain view for everyone to see. Y'all got a camera zoomed-in on Gaza 24/7, y'all can't even see the forest through the trees. Let me explain something that should be perfectly obvious: Israel's "atrocities" are Hamas's fault. Hamas is the dog that barked at the lion, and now they are suffering the devastating consequences. Israel has been more ethical in its strategic fighting of warfare than Hamas, the PLO, Hezbollah, ISIS, the Taliban - I could go on and on - have ever been. You'll notice a pattern here: every "army" I listed above is a terrorist group, so of course they don't care about "International Law." By the way, the ICJ ruled it was "plausible" that Israel was committing "Genocide." Know why? Because Israelis are NOT committing Genocide, never were, and the ICJ like the UN is a useless entity whose space would be better if transformed into apartment buildings.

  • Irish here..grew up in the 80s watching bombs go off and people being reported shot on my tv every week. I was very young...I never supported innocent people being killed and grew up thinking that the IRA were bad actually. In my adulthood I learned about armed resistance and post- colonialism and what the IRA were fighting for, because you're not taught it in school. It is possible to support the right of a people to armed resistance, whilst not supporting some of their tactics and methods. From what I can see from watching the Al Qassam brigades vids and various military analytic commentary is that Hamas has been executing a much more respectable account of themselves, in respect to their conduct during this conflict, than the Israeli's.

    • What this documentary won't show is that all leaders from Israel as well as from Hezbolah, Hamas, or Hamas regime or Israeli government, and all government from Lebanon, Iran, Turkey, etc, without one exception, are members of Freemasonry. Have you seen the videos of the attacks of October 7th? Well, I don't know if you have noticed that all bunkers were severely attacked and bombed, but the bunker of the Masonic Temple wasn't. Untouched. Doors opened. Nobody killed and nothing touched. I have the video. Secondly, what neither Israelis nor Gazans know, is that right now, Israeli Freemasons are washing millions of dollars in Dubai with the help of a Sunni Muslim... funds from Microsoft, McDonalds, IKEA, Apple.. many others. Those Israelis are all "Jewish" and Freemasons. That's just food for thought. Go to bed tonight and think about it. And by the way, has IRA ever killed a politician or the son of a politician? A very important person and their enemy in Parliament? You know the answer. You know who are the bosses. Against facts there are no arguments.

By Al Qassam brigades vids I assume you include the vids taken by Al Qassam members and their Palestinian allies of the actions they performed on Oct 7th. You say they executed a much more respectable account of themselves in respect to their conduct during this conflict than the Israeli's. Let’s remember that the first terrors bombing in Palestine was in 1946 when the “ Israeli terrorist militia “ haganah attacked king David hotel and killed 96 people and this was never classified as “terrorist” , the Jewish colonialists of terrorist made hundreds of terror attacked on Palestinians and till today it’s happening

    • Terrorism means the act of attack on civilians for political gain or reason so no one knows what drove that guy to kill those people, could be hatred and has nothing to do with politics, if that was the case you can't call it terrorism. The action of Hamas is terrorism the UN stated that but it did not condemn it because it's also a resistance act.

She makes a preamble of how “the Israeli strategy changed along the weeks and then the months of this war on Gaza and at a certain point it started to be a war of a very specific goal: the expulsion of the Palestinians” and she talks about what started going on in the West Bank. Gaza is not allowed to bring in iron and steel, and even food supplies enter in measured quantities, and all its borders are besieged. Tunnels are the only thing that helps them resist. The occupation, and also Israel, left Gaza due to the resistance and not by its will. Also, not far from Gaza there is the West Bank, there is no Hamas, and yet Israel destroys them, arrests them, and steals their lands every day. Before you do not speak, he answers, you must research and educate yourself well.

Prior to around 1900, the Jewish and Muslim communities enjoyed a peaceful existence, along with the Christian faith community in the region. It’s not until the influence of the European government that we see a divide starting to appear among these people. By the time we started moving people to colonies in the Middle East, do we see the possibility for a divide.

Plus, as already noted, the video cites Israeli officials and military commanders confirming that history - "Mehdi Hasan's word" has nothing to do with any of it, unless, again, you're trying to trashtalk someone because you personally don't like them. And also Hasan is not the only one who has highlighted that history - there are books, articles and reports that have detailed it. Your disinterest in even watching that video to see the quotes and historical evidence, as opposed to your eagerness to make random, subjective claims about someone's trustworthiness with zero evidence, already says a lot.

If you support a people being threatened with extinction then you must support their armed resistance because that is their only hope for survival. Unless you do this you only "support" Palestinians in dying. The notion Palestinians can commit “atrocities” against their occupiers is a gross lie. The only atrocity is the ongoing Nakba - Israel’s dependence on Palestinian elimination. Every act in response is necessarily liberatory. Any law that condemns liberation has no legitimacy.

  • The ideological and cultural origins of Hamas are connected to the Islamic Brotherhood, which as Caridi confirms, in its 1920s beginning was a "reformist" Islamic movement. Decades ago I read about it and was very impressed by its progressive thinking in Egypt in the 1920s onwards when Egypt was the intellectual hub of Arab thought. My source remains in my library - Enayat, Hamid (1982) Modern Islamic Political Thought: The Response of the Shi"i and Sunni Muslims to the Twentieth Century. Macmillan Press. Hamid Enayat (1932-1982) had been Professor of Political Science at Tehran University. When the book was published he was teaching at Oxford University.

    • the reformist movement was a response to the state of Muslim communities facing imperialism, industrialisation, and globalization. it presented a third way for Muslim communities to stop civilizational decline, and embrace progress in modern world. In 1994 South Africa was handed to the ANC on a silver platter. It had zero national debt, a solid infrastructure and a strong economy, self-reliant and even able to export various products. The first eight years of the new democracy, under the presidency of Nelson Mandela went very well. There was good cooperation and very little dissidence. Now, 30 years later, I would like to invite you here to come and see for yourself what the country and the economy looks like. The younger generation of well educated black people, the "born frees", i.e. those born after the end of apartheid are sick and tired of the rampant government corruption and lack of services and are looking to vote the ANC out of office. I wonder if you have ever been to Iran, Lebanon, Gaza and the West Bank to observe their way of ruling their countries and quality of life of their populations.
