Have we DISCOVERED Part Of The CHATEAU, Hidden In A Brocante?
Bonjour à tous, since buying the chateau the family have been slowly piecing together the châteaux past, Discovering how It once looked and some of the amazing people that lived here. Unfortunately when the château was purchased all items and furniture have been removed, even down to the door handle, piece by piece the family are reinstating the missing parts, but while one of the families followers was on holiday in France they discovered something that looks like it belonged to Chateau de Lalacelle, could it be part of its missing history? Ash, Terry, and Rob go on a visit to investigate.

About us,
We are a family from the North-East of England following our dream to restore a beautiful abandoned french Château. We discovered the heart stopping Château De Lalacelle in summer of 2020, this beautiful architectural monument Is set in the countryside of North-West France.
The moment we visited the Château we all fell in love, from the beautiful sweeping landscape and forests, to its stunning untouched interiors and magnificent spiral staircase in the turret.
Unfortunately Château De Lalacelle has been abandoned for a number of decades so will need a lot of restoration and DIY.
Please subscribe and follow our families journey, with the up’s and down’s in moving from the UK to rural France and restoring this beautiful building to its former glory.

Concerning the set of silver tableware, I have found thru my own years of collecting that the knives are usually either not fit to use or have been tossed out (as in the case of the set you guys were looking at today), the reason being that the knife blades were made of some more-durable material and silver plated (sterling blades would be too soft and bend). The blades don't hold up to use and tossed out. What I have done myself is find knives with mother of pearl handles and use them with the other pieces to set a very impressive table. If you intend to actually use the knives, I suggest having the blades replaced with modern stainless steel since ss is more durable and will hold up to washing. The original blunt (rounded end) knife blades are available in stainless steel, or you can use modern serrated blades. Today, even the most expensive sterling sets have stainless steel blades set in sterling handles for this very reason.
Thank you. Yes we’ve discovered this ourselves as we have done our research on them the last few days :) We will likely be back there 😊😊
@ashleywaters7198 I thought that set was solid silver, not Sterling? If Sterling, I should think they would not be very expensive.
@@ashleywaters7198 "We ended up going back, didn't we Terrance . . . " Ohhhh, throwing out the proper first name. A little tease to Terrance, who will be purchasing the silver, we ALL KNOW
Could youhave the knives manufactured
I was born in Sheffield worked in the famous cutlery company I've a set of beautiful ones for best mother of pearl looks beautiful we had a complete set but disappeared seems many year's later my dad sold themselves and lots of my stuff I bought , then my X stole my silver out of the attic I bought second hand in a beautiful box on legs didn't know till I visited him he was using it with his wife my lead crystal cake stand was expensive never seen another like it . Bought off a 80 year old lady after her husband had died over 30 years ago they had it too saw lots of my stuff he'd been in with a key he took off my door keys , had to leave was fuming he'd taken my oak furniture Old Charm all matched I did have some really old antique furniture but too big for him to take my house was bigger or it might have disappeared too. I laugh now can't take it with you thank you!
When you eat at someone's home, and there is mixed silver, all good, you just know that there is history on the table. Some of this great set and some of that. It's in the attitude with which it is used. And, that carriage is either a Makers display or a very expensive toy
The time to buy an antique like the cutlery set is absolutely right now!👍
Thanks Joan 😊😊
It is a investment for Sure
What fabulous quality and selection at the brocante….and at the end of the day it will be priced accordingly. Think of all the items you ve bought below market value and off set that when looking at these items you want. Chateau s deserve quality items….it will enhance your home. …some of those lights are fabulous…buy now. The cutlery is silver…if it had the knives it would be more than just a few hundred extra…..finding the knives is a ongoing search. As a specialist antique dealer of 26 years +. I know my trade. What you leave behind is what you talk about for years
How often are you going to shop and come across monogrammed cutlery for your Chateau!! Knowing the date it was made as well, I don't think I could have left it behind. I think it wants to come home. 😊
Yes, it's a lot of money but €700 for so many pieces of solid silver antique cutlery is perfectly reasonable. I don't know how much they weight but 1 kilogram of silver costs that much right now. And these are really old and they are beautiful. The great thing about the knives being the missing pieces is that knives always look a bit different than the rest so you could look for knives with a similar shapes. If the spoons were missing, any replacement would stick out like a sore thumb.
Thanks Enny! Yes we love them! I see a visit back there in our near future 😂😂
Ohhh! He called you Terence! 😅 Serious mode. That's when you know he did you a solid lol... I was thinking the same. If you're going to be missing pieces the knives are the ones to be missing. I also adore how the monogram is on the back. And how detailed it is! I think the sconces are perfect... And don't forget that you can always have glass shades made if you can't find a full set of matching. Having things made when you can afford to do so, means that you have put your stamp on to the timeline of the Chateau for future chatelaines to appreciate and made yourself even more a part of the history.
Spoons and forks are flatware, knives are cutlery and wouldn't necessarily be part of that solid silver set. In the past as the blades were steel and often had horn or bone handles there may never have been knives in that set we saw. That set was beautiful, and worth their money!
...and French table settings have the forks facing downward, so the monogram on the "back" side
@@user-dc5dv4vq7tI found Phillip lol
Definitely buy the monogrammed cutlery. It’s the chance of a lifetime. Think of all the money you’ll save by having the chateau logo/monogram already created for you.
Guys no one will notice the mismatched knives, get the silver is beautiful 😊
Greetings from Fort Dodge, Iowa! Thank you Terry and Asche for filming at that delightful Brocante ! As a solid silver and silver plated collector my whole life, I think you should really purchase that set, even though it doesn’t have matching knives . Often silver flatware sets, or cutlery sets , from this era didn’t have matching knives. You can always use mother of pearl handled or bone handle knives that would look very nice with the service.
Your eyes look like you’ve found the diamond mine. So glad this brings you such joy.
There are never old knives with ancient silverware because the blades get worn down and were obviously not in stainless steel. You can find modern knives with a similar style and get them engraved. Well worthwhile. I've done this...
Definitely buy the cutlery set guys. It would be an investment and each piece is so beautiful ❤
I inherited a full canteen of cutlery. It’s not solid silver but Prince’s plate which is much thicker than your normal silver plate. It was a wedding gift to my grandfather from his brother and I still have the gift card in the canteen box from May 1918! All the spoons and forks and serving utensils are monogrammed, however, the knives are made of steel with bone or ivory handles. When sets are sold it’s often the case that the knives will get separated from the silverware as they deteriorate (water gets into the handle and the steel rusts and the bone or ivory cracks. Sets of old knives are easily found and will complete that set as it designed to be. Don’t hesitate, phone and reserve that set and it’s possible the owner will have a set of appropriate knives to include with the silverware. If you don’t get it, you will regret it possibly for the rest of your life. I speak from experience. When you’re older, it’s not the things you did that you regret, it’s the things you didn’t do. I do hope you heed my advice and get the silverware. With best wishes from Neil in Australia 🇦🇺
I inherited my mother in law’s silver cutlery many years ago. The knives had bone handles with stainless steel blades, very worn with age, so I had to seek and search for replacements. I never found the perfect match, so looking at the beautiful silverware you now possess, a plain handle on the knives would be easier to find. Remember never to dishwash. Please remember P I enjoy very much seeing how far you have come, a result of everyone’s hard work in rain, hail and shine, including Jonathan. It is magical to watch the transformation and your dreams coming true. I hope you find a great soup tureen…
Laughed out loud when Ash was talking about all the lights. So funny!!
Please bring Carole to this brocante. It may lift her spirits if she can find a “Plan B” chandelier for the hallway.
Thanks Joyce 😊
The brass sconces with the yellow glass shades are perfect in scale and style for the salon. The color of the shades will pick up the drapery trim accents.
Thanks Nanci 😊😊
The new sconces for the grand salon are perfect ! It would have been a crime to not have gotten them !
Tbh….I so loved the ‘ rich kids carriage’ 🥰 To me, I wouldn’t have cared how much….I just would have had have to have had that because of the impracticability. People just love that stuff. People think logical and to most that is illogical so….it’s special . So love the artwork stands …❤️ The lily lights in golden hue are georgous ❤️
As to the cutlery, get it. What’s money when you have a one-of-a-kind set that you won’t ever find again. It’s one of those times that you just grit your teeth, put out the money and take the plunge. You won’t ever regret getting the set, but you very well could regret NOT getting it. It’s literally worth it’s weight, so it’s not like you’ll lose on the investment. Just my two cents…
Thanks Joanna 😊😊
I totally Agree
700 for solid silver sounds very reasonable to me. Too bad there are no knives. The sconces you bought are drop dead gorgeous!
Buy the silver. You'll never find another set that goes so well with your chateau. And the price? Well, once you buy them it only hurts once, and then you have a lifetime to enjoy them. Thanks for taking us along on the trip to the brocante. I saw several things I would enjoy having. 🥰
Concerning the "service de table", you have made the right choice and you will have no regrets. The missing knives are not an issue. A lot of sets don't have knives, they were often different, with black ebony handles for instance and no monograms.
Guys, your faces are so glowing with happiness that it's impossible not to smile back! You are engaged in such an exciting and complex business... You are real clever! Spend a lot of money in places like this more often! And God grant that you always have enough money! All the best, guys! and a separate respect to mom! Your mom is wonderful!
I found two sets of similar lamps in an antique "thrift" store while traveling in Northern Maryland. I got them for a steal and installed them in our master bathroom suite.
OMG that blue crystal chandelier...I"m drooling!
Writing this comment before I know if you got the cutlery set - GET IT! Knives are easily found and don’t have to be expensive - especially if they don’t match. The cutlery is a most wonderful relic from de la LaCelle. Hope you do purchase it!
Go back and get the cutlery set you will always regret it if you don’t.
If the silverware/cutlery really is monogrammed for your home grab it. They look lovely quality and design. Often the knives would be plainer, ivory handled without the monogramme, and could easily be obtained either as old ones, or brand new? Seems too good to miss, and once bought they will last a lifetime. Given daily use for the next 50 odd years, and beyond if Jonathan takes over, well "do the math".
Ash, buy the silver... Its gonna go up in price.... Buy them... Xxxx trust me..
Thanks Laura 😊😊
My suggestion is telling the seller that who ELSE would be buying the silver with that monogram other than you, so the market is limited as to buyers. And all of the good will and online publicity the brocante would gain, haha
Like they said, they would melt it. It’s worth the same 😂😂
That has got to be the most beautiful and amazing brocante in all of France. I see a trip on the horizon for Carol and Adrian to make for a chandelier. The wall sconces are absolutely gorgeous. They’ll be such a beautiful addition to the salon.
Maybe that was a dog cart. Thank you for taking us with you 😊
Love the lights but that cutlery is quality and a lot of money.
Thank you 🙏 😊
Gents, it was quite usual that a cutlery set was made and sold with knives. Knives were bought separately, quite often somewhat different too. you'll find knives with silver handles, though. By the looks of the set, buy ones with a bit chunky handles.
I loved shopping at the brocante with you today. The two of you laughing and having fun together is so much fun. I have many sets of antique sterling silver flatware and many sets have missing knives because they get discarded when the blades wear out. I just mix and match the sets and guests admire the different pieces. Love the sconces. xx
The look on Terry's face when he saw the cart was priceless. Exactly like a kid in a candy store, as you said. I'm so envious of the second-hand stores y'all have. We have them too, but not many with items that have so much history.
Can't you just see two High stepping little Hackney ponies pulling this little cart/buggy with the children of the house and playmates laughing and shouting through the town streets. Love it. What a treasure to restore it.
That pony cart for a child was interesting. I have seen them in old photos of the past.
As for that cutlery set you perhaps ask Phillip at Château Diaries he's always nosing around on the internet for things like that you could ask if he could give you some tips on where to look or could possibly find some for you.
Get the cutlery set. You’ll find the knives and never look back. Enjoy and feel free to enjoy everything.
Thanks Jade 😊
This was SOOOOOOOOOOO much fun. Thank you for filming the various things in the store. I really felt like I was there.
Thanks Donald 😊
Please purchase the flatware, it is stunning! You can keep an eye open for knives that will work--please buy the set!
When you said a few more vlogs before you could afford the cutlery, I though of Escape to Rural France, instead of doing 2 30 minutes videos each week he does daily videos that are only 8-12 minutes long. His viewership has increased from 200,000 to over 300,000. Just a thought that might help increase numbers and income.
Terry for solid silver that cutlery is reasonable especially with the logo. If you see the prices here in Australia for antiques you would gasp. The cutlery would of been double the price in Australia. What a great shopping experience. Thank you.
I would buy the cutlery set for your private use, in your own suite. How lovely that would be.
I likedthis Brocant, it had better quality items and it was not so all crowded with stuff that you cannot see everything properly like alot of other brocants. I love the lamps and that silver cutlery😍
You two act like school kids together!! I love that! XOXO
I had a part-set from my grandmother . Same issues ie no knives - so ended up making up the knives from elsewhere and they looked fine.
Terry, delighted you went to the Brocante and found the silverware. We had a great time chatting with you and the family, you are as down to earth in person as you are in your videos. Hopefully you will have donations toward the silverware for the chateau as they are absolutely perfect for you. Isn't the logo on them brilliant and such a match. I think that Brocante was our favorite too during our trip to France, makes you dizzy just looking around. We had our eye on that tapestry too! All the best, keep up the fantastic work.
You need to get that silver tableware. Please don’t miss out on it!
I hope you can justify the Sterling. It belongs in your chateau. Perfect for logo and branding purposes. You will find knives that work and don’t have to be the same pattern.
Thanks Robbie 😊😊
The blue and clear crystal chandelier took my breath away! (You need to create a blue suite 😂😉)
They'll be able to see the 400 bedroom all the way to the UK! You guys are so funny. Love watching you and all the progress you're making.
wow...the chateau looks completely different----fabulous!
You guys have got to make Carol come to this brocante, so many beautiful chandeliers she would certainly find one there for her hallway!
The monogram on the cutlery is perfect the simple style of the set should make it easy to find complimentary knives without the monogram.
You could always put antique bone knives with them; they often put special knives for different courses.
Les couverts en argent doivent arriver au château. C'est magnifique. Il suffit de trouver des couteaux avec le manche en nacre cela sera superbe et délicat. Très belle vidéo, amusante , interressante. 👍🏻
Terry is SO excited! That makes me happy. You two are so adorable.
I fully agree. The most loving and adorable couple ❤
The very best part of this video for me, besides the amazing treasures, is your love and affection for each other while you share a great adventure. Thank you for sharing 🙏🏻
Thank you 😊😊
Love wins 💕
The big wall lights for the grand salon are fabulous. They will look wonderful in there.
Hi Everyone, Oh my goodness😱 the brass wall lights are absolutely stunning 👌It would be a shame to swap the yellow shades for clear, there just to beautiful & unique! You can always use yellow stain glass paint 🎨 on the other lights ! I’m so glad you went back for the silver cutlery 🥄 It’s always nice to have something special, for the chateau, even if there in a display cabinet to look at ! Brocante shopping with you guys,is one of my favourite things to watch! thank you 🙏 Take care Lots of Love 🥰💕
The best part about you guys shopping at brocantes is Terry's joy when he sees something he loves! I am wondering how many times have you left a shop and gone back for items you can't get out of your mind? 🤣LOVE the silver - awesome buy!
I loved that you took me shopping and for a change I didn’t buy anything. This episode was delightful! Thank you.
I think the one item of furniture you liked and were thinking about as something that could have a TV above is a lovely writing desk that would look beautiful facing a window or even perpendicular so the light would fall on the writing surface. It is a very elegant desk. What a delightful shop!
Thank you 🙏 😊
How could you not buy the cutlery. A fantastic find.
That brocante had some beautiful items
Took the words right out of my mouth Ash 😅 “Blackpool Illuminations” 💡 😂 … but it will be ambient says Terry … he got ya again Ash 😜…fab all the same ❤
I love the flatware and you can always serve something that does not require a knife so it is ok to set the table without them.
You need that silver! It is gorgeous ❤
The Cutlery Set if is solid Silver it is well priced. I tried to count how many pieces, and how many as a setting, but alas you were way to quick on the scan, even though I tried stopping it wasn't obvious. To justify the cost divide the amount of cutlery by the € amount. The monogram is perfect also. You could then hunt for some knives with similar shape, get a moulding of the monogram and stamp it onto the knives. A silversmith could do this, or you could play with it yourself. I say get them, you will regret it otherwise. Sure they are expensive, but for every bargin buy you save money on, goes towards these. Silver is sold on its weight normally. I actually doubt that has been factored into the price. I work in a Fine Art and Antique Shop in Australia, just a silver teaspoon can cost anthing from $30-$60 depending on weight, hallmark, age. You will never find another unquie set like that again. Buy them is my advice. Terrance will just have to refrain from buying another chandelier for the rest of the year, or two 😉
That is the cleanest and most organized brocante I ever seen. Don't you think that Blue & white Chandelier would look good in Carole and Adrian's hallway.
I love the wall sconces. So unique! I know Ash can't wait to drill them into the walls.
Haha. Thanks Dodi! I’m gonna buy you a wooden spoon 😂😂
I vote for a go fund me for the purchase of the cutlery!
I hardly ever get to go browse around at the shops and dream of buying things far out of my price range. Thank you for taking me along :)
0:40 What a truly Amazing Antiquity Wonderland. I could never go in there, I would want everything...🤭
Terry is going to buy the cutlery i just know it lol .. definitely a kid in the candy store 😅😅
Get the silver!! ❤
I enjoy shopping with u 2. When viewing you on patron or videos i really feel like i am helping with the dream. This channel is the only channel that i feel this way about and i know it totally from the heart and love in restoration of this beautiful girl. Now we need a all out world wide hunt for those knifes and the rest of the set i am sure it was a pretty involved set. Success. I have to admit thinking"darn those would make beautiful rings and pendants. " put my name on the list for the first of a numbered series of rings".
Would be a good logo for napkin rings, the jewelry could sell in a chateau shop you might one day have, you could get other used silver and stamp it with the monogram.
Silver is going to sky rocket. Such a great decision I was yelling at the screen GET THE SILVER!!!
Thank you 🙏 😊
Right
Absolutely gorgeous finds 🥰🥰🥰
Indeed, go back and get that flatware set. You can certainly replace the knives with something else that will be just as elegant as the cutlery is itself. Bon appetit!
Maybe you cld design a monogram yourselves and see what’s involved in getting a set that suits your needs and budget embossed with the monogram.
I love your Brocante visits. This is clearly an amazing shop. Look at all the lovely pieces. ❤️❤️ something for every taste. I about had a heart attack when you put down the wall sconce that matched what you have. Then I see you got it 😂😂.
Thank you 🙏 😊
You have to buy the silver cutlery 😊
That cutlery set is awesome and I can’t believe you found those pieces. That was a lot of the set and you never know, the knives could make their way back to you one day. I also wonder if you could make a replica of them?
Because the wall lights are so large, they would look lovely in recesses. Each side of a fire breast, for example.
I'm just gob smacked at that Brocante oooo 😮 wow . Loved that blue Chandelier just so many gorgeous things ❤❤😊😮😊
So many beautiful things to see and appreciate. By the time you are done you.could rent it out to movie and photographer people, or a lavish b and b. Possablities are endless
You may come across the rest of the set of cutlery .in another brocante,Emmaus or market. Obviously someone kept the knives
Thank you 🙏 😊
Go back and get the silver. If it’s from your Chateau you may never find any more. And think of it as an investment. How did I do Terry?
I was wondering if you were interested in obtaining some of the original furnishings on the Chateau. I would like to know if there was any documentation of furnishing kept over the years that you could reference. Or are there any owners or their family members that could help track down items?
Love when you guys take us antiquing
I see what you mean that brocante was impressive. You picked lovely sconces. I would have bought that cutlery set regardless of missing knives. Expensive yes, but if you hummed and haaaaard long enough that’s a sign to get 😁
Gorgeous place, could spend hours in that place ,,,,thankyou,,,,,,hello from LILLE MARIE
stop stop no don't stop your killing me. I can't believe the beauty.
What an amazing place ❤❤❤❤❤
The cutlery was stunning, shame no knives. Maybe you could get some plain handle silver knives and get them engraved to match.
The cutlery is absolutely fabulous. What a great brocante. So many lovely things. Love what you bought. You have so many rooms to fill. Can’t wait to see how you decorate them. Much love❤
The silver set is amazing!! Great video!!
Oh dear, swooning the whole video, geez how do you cope, so many treasures...so little moolah...you guys crack me up...!
The cutlery was stunning 😢
Terry’s face 😬🐨😂
