Video: HOW TO FIX A PEELING LEATHER COUCH | HOW TO EASILY REPAIR REAL, BONDED, FAUX, OR FAKE LEATHER
PRO TIP: peel, sand with fine grit, spray with artist matt clear, spray paint (not brush) to exact color, spray over with gloss leather polish for shoes. It will last much longer and will not crack. Painting may look good but another six months of body heat, shifting while sitting, etc and you have the same problem but now it's cracking under the varnish you painted on. Spraying with leather coat will keep the spray color perfect for a long time and the underspray will stop the continued peeling.
WOW thank you
Just ordered stuff to do this! Thanks for the suggestions, very much appreciated!
Thank you!!!
could you post a link to the specific recomended supplies
@@coriannelee Did you try it, and did it work?
It's been 5 years since you made this video. If you still have the couch, fail or not, a follow up video sounds like a good idea. Either way, you could celebrate how well it held up or share a "this is what I learned" experience.
Great video. A few points tho. Don’t use leather wipes to clean. They have moisturizer In them to hydrate leather and those same things will stop the glue or dye or finisher from properly bonding. Wash that area with acetone. The bond should last years.
adding more points, a bit of light sanding might help too.
I used this method. Went to local Lowe's. Spend $20 total. It came out decent. I will buy a protector. I had insurance, so Living spaces refunded my money, and they said keep the couch! Thanks
Looks amazing!!! , so tired of vacuuming up peeled leather bits or covering it with blanket throws - thanks heaps for great tips n help
You matched that color so well! I have two (free) faux leather couches and I did this very same thing however, I added fabric softener to the paint to make it stretchy. After 3 years, one couch held up great and the other...well, not so much. I'm going to order the acrylic this time and see if this does the trick! Thanks for the tip! Also! If anyone is taking off a significant amount of the peeling, a hair dryer and a table knife makes it come off like butter! Heat up that vinyl and it nearly slides off with the knife!
I’m thoroughly impressed. I’m glad you came up in my google search results and will definitely be trying this here in the next couple of days
This is amazing I'm so glad I found your video, just purchased a sectional from the thrift store
Great it looks so beautiful it looks like real me and my son are definitely going to do this for our leather chair that has started peeling
Amazing skill here. Thank you very much for sharing this and for the effort of publishing it.
I'm gonna try this with my couch. It was given to me like yours. Your couch looks great!! Thanks for the video
What happened? Did yours turn out as good as the video?
Great video, very informative. I have a 4 yr sofa and love seat that's in good condition still, but the damn faux leather is peeling horribly! Will definitely try the products/tips to repair them. Thanks for posting this!
Thank you for this. I have a huge headboard that was cracking and peeling. This saved me alot. It doesn't look perfect but it beats having it reupolstered.
Thank you for this great idea! Especially when times are hard right now to purchase a new sectional!😃
Thanks so much, I am in the process of using this on my chairs I am really excited about how it is turning out. You saved my chairs!
Thank you - your video saved me bothering to waste any money on similar products, and to just concede it's new couch time :)
It’s not perfect??? You did such a good job!!! Was actually surprised! :D
Well thank you!! I am pretty happy with the results! ☺️
InstaBlaster
this is very talented and skilled work that requires a lot of patience....
I am going to be trying this. I looked at all the patches but my peeling couch is too big for them. So I did a google search and here you are. Very helpful!
You know what?! You did a pretty darn good job! I honestly would have never even thought of this as an option, so thank you very much. I think it turned out great! 😉
Thank you!! It lasted another year and even still that part didn’t start peeling again. There were other new areas that started to peel on the couch and I finally gave it away at that point
2 👍🏽👍🏽 I think it looks way better than before, this is an option to keep in mind !
I was honestly just considering buying a new couch cushion (that’s the only part that’s peeling bad) but this is sooo much cheaper. I’m definitely gonna have to try this. I’m tired of having leather pieces follow me wherever I go!
That's really incredible. I did not imagine that painting your couch can actually work quite decent
Thank you so much, this is exactly what I'm needing to do. I just brought a leather recliner sofa for $20 AUD with the same pilling issue but on the top back of the head rest cushion. I was sure I could fix it, if not 20 bucks was pretty good, but now I know I can :-)
Thank you for your video. The painting technique makes the most sense to repair vinyl.
wow; that came out better than i thought when i first began watching. I am very impressed.
I’m so glad I found this video. My sectional couch looks just like this and I’m going to try using this paint. Thank you!
I used the dull corner of a 5 in 1 tool and the peeling came off pretty quick and instead of a brush I used a sponge. Nice work!! Thanks for the video and idea!!
Looks great. I have the same couch and was searching for a repair option. Yours was the first video I found.
WOW Christy. You did a fantastic job. Matched the colour so well. Well done 👌👏👏
Thank you!!
Use a light sand paper before starting and cleanup with a cloth or wipe.. good mix, there is also leather spray paint
Thank you, thank you, thank you. This is the first video I've watched. I am now satisfied to start my diy. Awesome 👌!! I wanted to throw my couch and love seat away. You changed my mind.
Very creative! Great job! Was checking to see if I can repair my bedframe. Thank you!
Wow you did an amazing job 👍I have a small peel my couch is dark black so it's hard for someone to notice it but I do so I'm going to get right on this. Thank you so much I feel a lot better since watching your video your the best
Thank you so so much. I was about to buy new couches. My real leather couch is back like crazy new looking. God Bless you... I saved a lot right now.
You did a phenomenal job 👌 thanks for making this informative and helpful video
You’re so welcome!! Thanks for commenting!
Thank you so much for your video. Followed your steps and my damaged leather dining chairs look almost new.
Great job!! Thanks so much for sharing. I'm going to try this.
Thanks - my two chairs are just starting to peel ... I'm going to do this ... extend their lives a bit ... they are still beautiful!
You did a GREAT job in your video. I actually just came back home from buying me a used faux leather recliner for only $75. The leather is doing the same as your video shows so I'm going to do just what you did. This recliner doesn't have as much damage as the one you repaired but still can use some repairing. Thanks for providing the video.
I hope it works just as well for you! Only thing I might do different is use a bigger paint brush to make the job go faster! Also some people in the comments recommended trying sandpaper instead of peeling it by hand. Good luck!
@@SimpleMomming yes, you can also just packing tape because it sticks really good and then just pull the tape off.. Thanks again for video.
Oh good idea!!
Amasing transformation.
Thank you for sharing this! My great grandson was picking at the arm of our couch and it looks terrible. Definitely going to try this!!!
I hope it works well for you too! :)
I have a fake leather peeling I bought from The Brick me and my hubby will not me buying stuff from The Brick again! Thank you for this video!
This is amazing! Thank you so much for sharing!
This video is a life saver! I wish I could post my pictures! Thanks so much
Great job 👌🏽 thank you for sharing. I have a really nice vest and some of the trim has faux leather I need to do this process on. I'm excited now thank you
Thank you, my sofa is the same exact color. This video is Truly helpful
Hi! So I am doing this patch right now and I have some notes! The paint you found works great but I could only find it in small bottles so I had to figure out how to make it last. Mix the right color, add a layer or two, then do the top coat (I found a satin varnish that is pretty spot on for matching a leather sheen) then keep painting to build it up! I found that the fabric absorbs the paint a lot and makes it hard to build up an even surface. My couch is looking so much better now though!
I have that same question. How much paint did you finally buy? I want to redo a handbag in bronze but I only saw the bottles in one ounce sizes and I have no idea if that will be enough for a handbag . I guess I'll buy 2 bottles and if there's any left over I'll use it on shoes or something.
Bought a peeling leather couch for 50 dollars for my first place. Totally feel like I made the right decision after seeing this
It looks so good. Thanks a bunch. Good job.
I'm impressed with you. I admire people that can do things themselves. I'm 81 and I'm amazed at how helpless so many young people are now. OK, now my ideas to help this go easier and faster. Use a 2-3 inch brush when covering a large area like you had to do. Also on this job if you'd laid the couch down on its back the paint wouldn't have run down toward the seat nearly as much. You did a great job but you spent way more time on it than was necessary. The couch looks great and my computer chair is jealous so I'll be doing it. Cheers, Neill
Thank you! I just purchased everything on your list from amazon!
Well I hope it works out great for you! A few people in the comments suggested sanding the surface before painting it for a smoother surface.
Brava, Christy, I really like what you did. That repair looks great, and thank you for the video.
Thank you! I’m glad it was helpful :)
Somebody need to do a class action suit for all these defective fake "bonded leather" couches. Plastic more Durable-- car seats don't peel as much as a fake leather couch. National disgrace !!! Nice try but you shouldn't have to paint your couch.
Real leather is so much nicer, I agree! But this couch set was actually given to us and we didn't have to pay anything for it, so I am grateful to have it, even if I have to fix it up a bit every now and then :) It really helped us have enough seating for all the family since we're just starting out. Thanks for watching and commenting and sharing your opinion. One day we'll get to upgrade to a better quality couch and that will be very nice! :)
@@SimpleMomming You did a great job with a defective couch, no doubt. God bless you.
Thank you!!
king johnny I’m with you bro 👍
I’m with you bro 👍
This is so helpful, thank you so much!
Excellent job we were thinking about buying a new couch and loveseat but now I’m gonna do what you did. Thank you so so much for saving us some money ours is peeling just like yours was ours is black and it’s Matt so I’m going to try to do exactly what you did. Thank you so so much. Again🙏🏽❤️🥰
After alot of do's & Redo's; best fix
I think this is a great idea! I was wondering would some kind of latex filler for the edges. I was thinking hair glue as I'm unfamiliar with the latex options out there. I researched and the paint will stick to the latex. Also, maybe a drop of red to better match the couch; it has a red undertone.
Omg! I must try this. Thank you so much for the tutorial
Hi @Christy Lyn, good great! How much paint did you used for the chair? and do you feel any stickiness from the paint?? Thank you.
Omg! @Christy Lyn I love this video and my couch is the same way I have couch covers on it now but it's a hassle fixing them all the time 😊 I'm going to try this thanks so much for this how to video I'll let you know when I try it.
Great work. I am impressed with your intelligence.
Excellent job and idea! Kudos to you!
I learnt something new tonight! Thanks for sharing. You're awesome!
What coverage did you get with the 4oz bottle? I have about 3 times what you did to cover.
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G-!-!-! Great job!!!
Excellent. Very helpful thanks.
Great job! What a wonderful idea.
Great job! Looks really good!
Will be trying this next week. Thank you.
Girl! Awesome job!
Thank you, that was helpful!
Thanks for your help...
Thank you so much for the Information 😊
Thanks, followed your steps and was able to salvage the couch... probably added 2-3 more years to it.. !
I can’t wait to try this on my peeling recliners this weekend!!!
Thanks!
Perfect!!!!!!
What do you mean! It looks so perfect to me. You did a great job
Wish I could show you the outcome of my couch but much like yours. I’m so happy!
Thanks for this!! I have been living with a couch that looks as bad or worse then yours. Cats destroyed it almost as soon as I bought it😟. It’s been covered with blanket throws since. Going to give this a try.
Impressive... Thanks for posting!
Looks a lot better et the end! I saw another repair video a while back and they sanded and even used leather filler to even out the surface before painting
Can you link that video? I’m about to repair my couch.
Hi there! Wondering if you have an opinion on using the leather paint vs chalk paint as I have seen both options.
New subscriber! 😊great job. I never knew you could paint a leather couch. I need to do this, my couch has started to peel too!
I hope this method works for you! Be sure to check the comments for more great suggestions that viewers added which may improve the method that I used.
Will do this!!!!! Thank you!
awesome. thanks for this.
So excited to do this! I just bought a new couch and I was moving it into my apartment , it was super heavy and I peeled the side of it on the brick wall of the apartment 😤 so I really hope this will work
heyy did it work?
Did it work?? We waiting for an answer for over a year now
👀 did it work lol
Brick wall 1 >Couch 0
Wow - great job! I think the hardest part for me would be to match the color of my couch - sort of weird reddish brown. Great video!
Thanks for this video, I will try this 🙏
This works great!!!
Thank you I will try this with my couch
Thank you
Thank you I am going to try this

How long do you let it dry between coats?
You did a great job! (Do u think though you could have used a bigger brush?) Did u do everything over 2 days? Thank u!
I think lightly sand the peeling edge. Also, I'd use a small foam roller for the final coats of paint and acrylic. Gonna give it a try! Thanks for the video
Yup this helped me a lot out today!!!
Just bought the material to do mine ! Thanks for the video !
Oh yay! I hope it works for you!! Just remember, you want to get the surface as smooth as you can before starting to paint or else it will be a little bumpy or rough. It’s usually not as smooth as brand new anyway but at least from a distance it looks pretty believable ☺️ Good luck!
So how it's goin?
