How to easily cut EMT Electrical Conduit from Home Depot or Lowes
EMT or Electrical Metallic Tubing is a galvanized thin wall tubing available at Home Depot, Lowes or other hardware or Electrical supply stores. The tubing is lightweight and affordable. Its designed for interior use but can at time be used outdoors. In this short how-to video we show three ways to easily cut EMT. We used a tubing cutter, angle grinder and sawzall. Stay tuned for future videos to see how we plan to use EMT for several DIY projects.

In the electrical trade we just use a hacksaw or band saw. Use a pair of channel locks with the handle grips cut off to ream it
Thank you for posting this. I've appreciated it.
Glad it was helpful!
Band saw all the way
If you’re using it for electrical, it takes a ton of time to remove that deep burr from the inside if using a tubing cutter. Inspectors hate conduit being cut with tubing cutters. That lip is hard to remove and it just skins wire when it’s pulled
That’s why you just score it and snap it.
ill remember that bud. tx
What kind of consequences have you seen inspectors enforce?
Thanks for the tips!
Happy to help!
Jigsaw with a metal cutting blade also works. Use a finer toothed blade to minimize burrs. Since most reciprocating saws are two handed tools, it's nice to have a hand free to stabilize the conduit and the results are nearly identical.
Great idea thanks
WOW! This video is only two years old and he said a 10ft stick of 3/4 EMT is ~$5. It's over $12 now.
I know its crazy. Prices went sky high after Covid!!
You Can use your tubing cutter to deber the pipe . On the back of the cutter is a deburring blade hope this helps !🤠
Thanks for the video, I will know buy the tube cutter
Glad I could help
I don't what brought on the other comments on this video, seems out of place, haha... Anyway, thanks for showing this! We are getting tubing for our wall tent and the pipe cutter seems the best option.
Thanks for that!
I would like to know the brand of the tubing cutter - thanks!
Seems like the tube cutter is the best option for cleaner cuts
Absolutely as long as you have a vise or can hold the pipe from turning its the easiest and cleanest cut!!
The issue with the tube cutter is when you use that, you create little "indents" inside the emt which can be an issue because when you snake the romex through you can easily cut the wire off of it
I've been looking to buy a cordless bandsaw, but I don't really need one as I have a Milwaukee recip. Thanks.
Glad I could help
Thanks for the video. Is the cutter the same used to cut copper tube? Or is it specially made to cut EMT electrical conduit?
Get one made for EMT. The copper ones dull out far too fast
@@DRocker80 I can’t find one for EMT. What is the brand you recommend?
@@gwens5038 I found a heavy duty Kobalt brand at Lowes. It cuts up to 2" in diameter.
@@DRocker80 Thank you!!
Tubing cutter available for 1¼ and 1½" EMT? I need a cut that is quite square, not for electrical. 1¼x36" EMT weighs 3 pounds.
Thanks.
You're welcome
Why would you not mention a portable band saw?
Just because I dont have one LOL
Don’t let an electrician see you doing this
for crafts not electrical work
Inflation is wild
If u were on my sparky crew u would only cut pipe like that ONCE!! U wouldn't be around to do it twice.
You won't find a professional electrician using a regular tubing cutter. There is one specifically made for EMT. Further, it would be MUCH easier to use a portable band saw to cut a conduit and a reamer to finish it. If you're going to use tools, use the proper tools. THAT'S what makes it easier.
5$ per 10 ft???...god bless the USA...here in canaDUH it's 37$ for 10ft
Just use a hacksaw is cheaper and faster
Definitely not. Hacksaw leaves an uneven cut the pipe cutters are quick and you end up with a square cut
Use a portaband or a skill saw with a metal blade lol.
