The C.O.’s are so negative “you can’t buy an inmate’s respect” “if you do them one favor theyll ask for another” “Don’t trust them” most are broke and in my experience will protect you for food/toiletries “doing them one favor” like resetting a broken knuckle, cooking spreads, or making bras for the other inmates like the officer did demonstrate value

Abner was the worst part of the show. He proved what everyone thought. The parole/penitentiary officers let him violently assault someone. The officers sole job is to keep them safe. Most tragic thing about prison is that a lot of the violence that happens in it can be averted by the restoration of the dignity lost in institutionalization by those who institutionalize them. It takes a just punishment and morphs it into cruel and unusual. This scene captures the symptom perfectly.

hi there. ive been to jail twice.. once for 2 months then for 6 months. these are detention centers (meant for holding people til sentencing or people that have sentences under 5 years) and theres a HUGE difference from PRISON and these JAIL/DETENTION CENTERS. abner was def treating this as a PRISON this comment is 100% right

Been to jail more times then I can count. Been to both state and federal pen. Max and medium security. Jail is a completely different animal then prison. Completely. Abner introduced the prison politics were it had no business being, then got "tough" when he knows the cameras are on and he can be saved. Something that I’ve come to notice is that almost every single time one of the undercovers earns a little respect or approval from an inmate- here come the sheriff to completely disapprove and dismiss it. It really feels like they WANT them to get made sometimes.

What they want is for someone who usually has 0 experience IN jail to somehow dramatically shift the narrative and politics of the jail in only 2 months, without becoming a leader. Which is impossible. If you become a leader you only do so by maintaining the status quo, yet to change the dynamics you have to control the people. So usually the only thing they ACTUALLY end up accomplishing without breaking the law themselves is to bust others for smuggling

Unfortunately, these are the facilities that make good TV. If they came to the jail for the county I work for, it wouldn't make very good TV. Though we have our fair share of incidents, we handle it appropriately. We also run a very tight ship. Its not a small facility, mind you. We hold on average anywhere between 1500-2300 inmates.

There's also a reason for this: a lot of them are barely getting paid minimum wage to do this. Not justifying their abhorrent behavior but that's probably a pretty big contributing factor. Median pay for a CO is roughly 30-35k a year.

That’s terrible, I know everyone is having “budget issues” but that city or state needs to pay them more so they can care about their job. I agree 100%, not justifying their behavior but they need a REAL wage and then maybe they’ll care and put some effort. Money doesn’t fix everything but it’s a start.

@@jessica_jam4386 also his way of doing things earned him respect and loyalty from his cellmates. I guarantee if he was really locked up they would have backed him up if anyone stepped to him. If you have a useful skill people will always look out for you especially in prison, there's always one or two guys that can get you contraband but how many can fix your hand up and save you from having to explain to the guards how you broke your hand?

@@popermen694 the prison officers do not need your respect. they are incapable of providing inmates with any security and even managing basic health concerns as seen in previous episodes. the officers act so entitled when there is real danger at risk in these prisons which they are clearly incapable of controlling, hence the existance of this show. the prison system is the US is a complete failure and the prison officers could not care less about any of the real issues within each prison block.

Every single episode of this show I watched brought me to the same main conclusion: the way inmates are treated in the US is animalistic and horrific. There is no justification for it on any level. It was more horrifying than any actions by any of the inmates.

Most tragic thing about prison is that a lot of the violence that happens in it can be averted by the restoration of the dignity lost in institutionalization by those who institutionalize them. hi there. ive been to jail twice.. once for 2 months then for 6 months. these are detention centers (meant for holding people til sentencing or people that have sentences under 5 years) and theres a HUGE difference from PRISON and these JAIL/DETENTION CENTERS. abner was def treating this as a PRISON this comment is 100% right
Been to jail more times then I can count. Been to both state and federal pen. Max and medium security. Jail is a completely different animal then prison. Completely. Abner introduced the prison politics were it had no business being, then got "tough" when he knows the cameras are on and he can be saved. Something that I’ve come to notice is that almost every single time one of the undercovers earns a little respect or approval from an inmate- here come the sheriff to completely disapprove and dismiss it. It really feels like they WANT them to get made sometimes.
What they want is for someone who usually has 0 experience IN jail to somehow dramatically shift the narrative and politics of the jail in only 2 months, without becoming a leader. Which is impossible. If you become a leader you only do so by maintaining the status quo, yet to change the dynamics you have to control the people. So usually the only thing they ACTUALLY end up accomplishing without breaking the law themselves is to bust others for smuggling

Unfortunately, these are the facilities that make good TV. If they came to the jail for the county I work for, it wouldn't make very good TV. Though we have our fair share of incidents, we handle it appropriately. We also run a very tight ship. Its not a small facility, mind you. We hold on average anywhere between 1500-2300 inmates.
There's also a reason for this: a lot of them are barely getting paid minimum wage to do this. Not justifying their abhorrent behavior but that's probably a pretty big contributing factor. Median pay for a CO is roughly 30-35k a year.
That’s terrible, I know everyone is having “budget issues” but that city or state needs to pay them more so they can care about their job. I agree 100%, not justifying their behavior but they need a REAL wage and then maybe they’ll care and put some effort. Money doesn’t fix everything but it’s a start.

Every single episode of this show I watched brought me to the same main conclusion: the way inmates are treated in the US is animalistic and horrific. There is no justification for it on any level. It was more horrifying than any actions by any of the inmates.

Tbf with the whole "Don't play the inmate games" schtick... they kinda have to, if you talk all this waffle and then randomly start going "Oh no I can't" they're gonna get real suspicious of you, reallll soon.
