  • The C.O.’s are so negative “you can’t buy an inmate’s respect” “if you do them one favor theyll ask for another” “Don’t trust them” most are broke and in my experience will protect you for food/toiletries “doing them one favor” like resetting a broken knuckle, cooking spreads, or making bras for the other inmates like the officer did demonstrate value

    • Abner was the worst part of the show. He proved what everyone thought. The parole/penitentiary officers let him violently assault someone. The officers sole job is to keep them safe. The fact that the smug deputies were like... that's the Intel we needed.. Shows the absolute ignorance if the system. Not the correction or safety for the individuals involved. If you've never been in, you should stfu. You have no right to know the abuses commited. Period.

  • Most tragic thing about prison is that a lot of the violence that happens in it can be averted by the restoration of the dignity lost in institutionalization by those who institutionalize them. It takes a just punishment and morphs it into cruel and unusual. This scene captures the symptom perfectly.

Abner introduced the prison politics were it had no business being, then got "tough" when he knows the cameras are on and he can be saved. He would have been put in his place if there was a real con in there.

  • Something that I’ve come to notice is that almost every single time one of the undercovers earns a little respect or approval from an inmate- here come the sheriff to completely disapprove and dismiss it. It really feels like they WANT them to get made sometimes.

    • What they want is for someone who usually has 0 experience IN jail to somehow dramatically shift the narrative and politics of the jail in only 2 months, without becoming a leader. Which is impossible. If you become a leader you only do so by maintaining the status quo, yet to change the dynamics you have to control the people. So usually the only thing they ACTUALLY end up accomplishing without breaking the law themselves is to bust others for smuggling

    • Unfortunately, these are the facilities that make good TV. If they came to the jail for the county I work for, it wouldn't make very good TV. Though we have our fair share of incidents, we handle it appropriately. We also run a very tight ship. Its not a small facility, mind you. We hold on average anywhere between 1500-2300 inmates.

    • There's also a reason for this: a lot of them are barely getting paid minimum wage to do this. Not justifying their abhorrent behavior but that's probably a pretty big contributing factor. Median pay for a CO is roughly 30-35k a year.

If you have a useful skill people will always look out for you especially in prison, there's always one or two guys that can get you contraband but how many can fix your hand up and save you from having to explain to the guards how you broke your hand?

  • The CO with his hands in his pockets listening to two inmates ramping up doing nothing is dereliction of his duties. The entire fight and stabbing could have been prevented. He needs to be fired. Being retrained is not an option with this guy.

  • Every single episode of this show I watched brought me to the same main conclusion: the way inmates are treated in the US is animalistic and horrific. There is no justification for it on any level. It was more horrifying than any actions by any of the inmates.

  • Tbf with the whole "Don't play the inmate games" schtick... they kinda have to, if you talk all this waffle and then randomly start going "Oh no I can't" they're gonna get real suspicious of you, reallll soon. Personally would rather break a few rules if it meant I wasn't causing other inmates to be suspicious of me than start turning down things and end up as a target.
