MOUNTAIN OF HELL 2023 - The battle for 2nd place! Liam Moynihan Full race

For anyone curious on the filming/export mistake I made- I filmed this at 24fps and exported through Final Cut editing software but in a project setup at 25fps. I actually didn’t realise this was the case or that it would make any difference until a while later when I noticed my face time and the official race time were different. At first I thought it was their mistake until I noticed the other racers’ video was in agreement with the race time so I investigated further and discovered that the 25fps project meaning the video has 25frames(still images) per second had 24frames per second footage in it, effectively shortening the video/race time by 1frame in every 25!
Good lesson for the future and glad everyone has enjoyed the video anyway!

The mountain of hell is one of the most exciting races of the year.
With 800 riders lined up behind us on the snow at the top, things are tense and exciting, that feeling ramps up as the helicopter fly's overhead and the start gun sounds!
I had a bit of a poor go down the snow, was trying hard to avoid carnage and went too slow round the first corner as a result was going too slow for the entire next snow section and lost a tonne of spots. I managed to make them up until I finally ended up in a tight battle with Olivier Bruwiere and Alexis Chenevier for 2nd place. Kilian Bron was too far ahead to get within touching distance with and eventually won the race!
There was a full live stream of the race from the helicopter and various drones and filmers along the way - it was shown live on French TV too.
Now looking forwards to the Megavalanche in just over a weeks time!!

  • Such a fun race!! I was a bit too careful on the snow at the start after seeing Theo crash in the first corner and people seemingly flying everywhere. It felt really sketchy at the time. Luckily the race is long and I knew I could make time on the single track if I had clear track or ride really efficiently if I was behind someone/in a group which would allow me to be fresh for the climbs. I know my fitness is good for the 30second to 2min climbs also and that I'd be able to pass on those. Had another tight race with Alexis and Olivier for 2nd and they both got the better of me this time but it was good to race them as always! Congrats to Kilian for the win! . P.S I realised after uploading that I've filmed this in 24p and exported it as 25p it still looks normal 99.9% of the time but if there is the odd small jump that's why! My internet is soooo bad here (it took over 24hours to upload) otherwise I would change it and reupload!

  • The speed tuck was the best move he did on fast downhills. It's saving him energy he well spent on uphills. For most to understand, it takes exponentially more energy/force to fight wind speed the faster you go, so there is a point where pedaling with wide arms is more tiring and slower than just fly downhill ducking down and tucking the arms in. Bravo

  • It was very difficult to make out the correct path in many places. Also some parts of the track seemed like death traps to me. Those tiny bridges around the time you twisted your ankle were not visible until very close and they look like they are only 1 bike wide.

  • Great race and great video. Thank you for uploading! A little bit faster in the start and without the little slowdown in the first corner you could have been at the top of the climb with Bron. I think you did the climb 13 seconds faster than Kilian.

    @Thomas.deNorth@Thomas.deNorth10 ай бұрын
    • Ahh Thanks! I definitely need to be a bit more committed on the snow. Would have been interesting to be a bit closer to Kilian, I imagine he could have pushed on a bit more on the climb if he had some pressure on so it's hard to compare but I appreciate the kind words!

      @LiamMoynihan@LiamMoynihan10 ай бұрын
  • It's crazy how people that win these races (I watched Kilians run, too), both of them made their most progress on the rise at ~7:25. It seems like Mountain Biking is not only about speed, downhill and technique...

    @BenjayTay@BenjayTay10 ай бұрын
    • Yeh you need it all in every discipline now. Same in xc, downhill and enduro. You need skills, fitness, strength and a good bike setup to do well in them all. Impossible to win at enduro without insane fitness to go with the skills, impossible to win at xc without the skills and impossible to win at downhill without being super powerful and strong as well as skills!

      @LiamMoynihan@LiamMoynihan10 ай бұрын
    • from my XC racing days I remember being more fit than the other guys around me. It can be tempting to go all out, but if you go too deep, you wont have the strength and focus for the downhill sections after that. It's a real balancing act.

  • Are there two starting areas? I noticed two riders appeared from the right just after the start, one causing a crash at the front

    @Pshady@Pshady10 ай бұрын
    • There was just one starting area. The rider who you can see appearing from the right is rider 7. At 20seconds in my video you can se him start to go directly right. There is a big snow fence to the right of the starting area with a big patch of rocks and then steep bumpy snow. He took a pretty bold line and headed straight over the rocks and down the sketchy ungroomed snow and it almost worked really well. We all discussed it as an option on the start line but I didn't expect any of the top guys to do it in the end!
