How good was Gheorghe Hagi actually? #GOAT
New episode of a documentary series where I plan to present all the greatest players of all time and then give them a score so a ranking of the best players can be created. In this episode we take on Gheorghe Hagi who played for Barcelona, Galatasaray and Real Madrid for most of his career, not only one of the greatest playmakers of all time but one of the greatest players of all time. See how Gheorghe Hagi ranks and just how good he actually was.
After all this time for some reason, FIFA decided I couldn't show you some of the clips at around the 10 minute mark therefore the blurs, don't mind them tho they only last about a minute
I'm from Romania and I can promise you Hagi wasn't the best we had. Look up Nicolae Dobrin and you'll have a video 10x more interesting about the true best we've ever had.
@@gunnation3497 I have heard this too from my dad who was told by my grandad, that Dobrin was the best. But I think we have to take into account that that these two players are from different eras. Its true that Dobrin was wanted by Real Madrid President, and Ceausescu did not want to let him go as he was a national treasure. That would have been Dobrin's chance to shine in front of the world, unfortunately never happened. Hagi on the other hand has played for both Real and Barcelona, (a rarity only a number of players have experienced) and he took us to 3 back-to-back World Cups, qualifying each time for the Round of 16. We have video of his most spectacular moments. I think there are many moments of Dobrin that were not captured on camera or lost, which is a shame. Dobrin will forever be one of the best, I just can't say he was better than Hagi who led our golden generation.

@@gunnation3497 Dobrin had better "dribbling ability/close control" however Hagi had more dimensions to his game, scored a lot more often and was the fulcrum for Steau in their European campaigns ,much like Maradona was for Napoli, he repeated this role for Galatasaray. As for Hagi performances for Romania even Brazilian greats such as Pele and Gerson had Hagi as the outstanding player of USA 94.

I am a die hard Argentina fan and I still remember watching the face off with România în 1990 and 1994 World Cups. Hagi The Maradona of Carpathian made the difference in 94 in the absence of Diego Maradona.

It was also a rematch of the '90 world cup group game where the game ended in 1-1 and Romania finished above Argentina in the group. But this time Maradona missed the game due to the controversy just before the game. Hagi was known as the Maradona of Carpathian!! Hagi and Stoichkov are 2 of my all times favs too. But I was mad at Romania for beating Argentina! Lol. And many years later, I have blood relations and good friends who are Romanians!! 😂

As a GALATASARAY fan, Hagi is one of the greatest footballers of all time, I feel very lucky to have watched him live.

He actually was a genius choosing Galatasaray over bigger western teams , he would stay on the bench for many games , unfairly at Real or Barça but he become a legend at Galatasaray.

Hagi was unreal. Ability wise he was up there with the very best players ever. Great dribbler and his long shots were amazing. He was brilliant for Romania. A real leader for them. I remember when Ireland beat Romania on penos in the 1990 World Cup. Hagi was amazing that game. He was so unlucky not to score with several of his incredible long shots. Hit the bar 1/2 times & was clearly a level above everyone else.. Thats the first time I saw him and I was so impressed. Could see he was a footballing genius and I was a fan of his from that moment on. Unfortunately he didnt shine at Real or Barca(altho had some great moments) but I think the pressure of a big club got to him and affected how he played. He needed to be a big fish in a little pond and have the team built around him, like how the Romanian team was. In the right team he was magic.
Correct! Both Real and Cruiff's Barca had to build a team around him. Both would have had great results. Especially Barca who had a super good team at that time. He didn't have the brain, the spark. This could have been Hagi. I think that Cruiff wanted him at Barca more as a trophy to train him than to make him the exponential player. In my opinion, no one from that team had the value of Hagi. This is a real number 10 with everything in it.
Great player! An iconic number 10 who was very entertaining to watch, albeit being overly temperamental at times; Hagi was so talented, creative, skilful, dynamic, and he scored some incredible goals as well. If only he had had a better mentality and work-rate, and had been more consistent in bigger domestic leagues in Spain and Italy, he could have been even greater, but he still he had a great career and still managed some fantastic achievements with Steaua Bucharest and Gala in particular, both domestically and in Europe. He was also unfortunate not to play for a better national side, but Romania still had a good team and achieved some impressive results with him as their leader, and his achievements and performances in certain international tournaments were certainly memorable and of a high quality.

Actually, Hagi went to Real Madrid after the communism regime was done. During the communism days no player was allowed to play outside Romania. Also, Steaua in 1986 was basically the same as the national team because it was Ceausescu’s team. Also, Romania was one of the top national teams between 1990 and 1999. In 1997 Romania was the 3rd team in the world FIFA rank.

Actually, you're wrong on multiple accounts. There were Romanian players that were allowed to play abroad, usually late in their careers. It wasn't very common, but there's a surprisingly long list. You can search it yourself. Secondly Steaua wasn't "basically the same as the national team". Yes, there were Steaua players in the national team, but if you look up the starting lineups of the national team in the mid/late 80s you'll realise that most national team players were not from Steaua. Again, this is something you can look up yourself. You are, however, correct in saying that Hagi left Steaua after the fall of communism, though some of his (older) team mates were allowed to play abroad starting '88 (Boloni) and '89 (Stoica, Pițurcă, Bălan). You are also corect in that Romania's highest FIFA world ranking was 3rd.
Romania from the 70-90s had many top footballers that the big European teams wanted. Dobrin-Real Madrid, Balaci-AC Milan and others...

He was a great number 10, simply a hero for every Galatasaray supporter.
He is a simple man, but his mentality is awesome. He made a football academy with his OWN MONEY to give kids without possibilities a chance to follow their dreams. How many ex great players did that? He carried the Romanian national team almost by himself, even though he had alot of great colleagues playing at major clubs in Europe at that time such as Petrescu at Chelsea or Adrian Ilie at Valencia. He started with nothing but his magic left foot and he is still involved in the football world at his age. I was not even a teen girl when he left Galatasaray. I literally cried when I've heard the news. Haven't really been interested in football since. I think anyone from turkey over who was over 6 in 2000 would never forget him. He was out of this world. And looking back his games... I really don't think anyone plays like him anymore. Hagi and Roberto Carlos had the best two left foots in football world but each enjoyed a totally different technique in kicking the ball. Carlos was specialist in stationary balls and would bend the ball but Hagi was master of surprise shots from long long distances and he would make the ball to swing and fly in a unpredictable trajectory!. When you watch Hagi's shoots with slow motion you will see how the ball changes direction a couple of times and made it impossible for the goalie to guess the direction of the ball.

I feel if hagi was able to leave at a younger age he could have adapted in spain better because if you play in not such a dominant league (yeah they played in the champions league and did well, but it's not like you play in the champions league all the time so your not used to the pressure and standards). And you only leave at 25, 26 and you go to a top league it's harder to adapt. An example is let's say your trying to learn a new language its always easier to learn it when younger then when your older. But the guy anyway was special because the Romanians remember him as a god and the Turkish member him as a god too. Fun fact turky actually supported romania because of hagi only one other guy did that and he is called maradona just saying. He was the type of guy who everytime he got the ball he did something , he was exciting did skill moves. Fun fact: Michael and Brian were both on the bench (for Barca & Milan, respectively) in the 1994 Champions League final. Michael excelled more at club level, playing for longer time at the biggest teams, but Brian was a key player for Denmark's ONLY international trophy - the 1992 European Championship, where Michael didn't participate :)

Unfortunately when he play for Barcelona and Real Madrid he wasn’t let to play his football. The manager dind’t give permision to have this freedom on the field like Leo Messi or Maradona. He was somehow desconsider, Romania was just free after 50 years of comunism and an Est European in Spanish League it was not the best picture from the football in that years. You can see the difference after ‘94 in Spanish league. I think they were not prepared for a such tallent and humble person as Hagi in ‘90

What a special talented player
As a Steaua fan I liked when he played at Sportul Studentesc (underdog sympatic Bucuresti club besides Steaua, Dinamo, Rapid) and of course I was proud when he joined Steaua. In the national team he was the ultimate hero. Nearly to dominant at the end, since Romania had also other talents ;)
This video has made me realise how big the shift in power i football was. Galatasaray, Leeds, and the first club Hagi won the champions league with, they all got to at least the semi finals of the UCL
Thank you for making this video. This is the greatert football player in our history and he definitely has a good spot in all time international tops. But I must say: it's Hagi, not Agi; in romanian, the letter H is not mute, it's quite articulated. :) FYI: Now he is a Owner/Manager of FC Farul Constanta. He also has a youth academy that bears his name and in which he has a lot to say. His motivation now is to find young talents and help them grow. Currently, Farul sits in the 1st place in the romanian 1st league. Legend.

Truly amazing work with these videos. There was a tv program(and still is, i think) in Italy called "Sfide", highest quality football/sport docs I have seen in my life. Your channel reminds me a bit of that (best compliment I could give you). Check it out, if you can get past the language barrier. Keep it up and I am sure your work will be rewarded! In my opinion the best 3 number 10 of the 90's are Hagi, Stoichkov and Romario. That it's why at every team when are too many stars that is not going to go well, when Barcelona had all three of them finished only at fourth place!

Not many people know, there was a second Hagi. He was Adrian Ilie, a player with a short career but with a talent that’s rarely seen.
Adi Ilie a dat 28 de goluri în 85 de aparitii la Steaua, Hagi a dat 76 de goluri în 95 de apariții pentru Steaua , Adi Ilie a fost un jucător bun dar Hagi a fost un geniu. Mutu ar fi mai sus ca Cobra după cifre dar și Viorel Moldovan care peste tot unde a jucat jumate din apariții erau goluri și la nantes un gol pe meci chiar...și Răducioiu era bun cu 20 de goluri în 40 de apariții la națională, și Ionel Ganea cu 19 goluri în 45 de apariții la națională, Adi Ilie a reușit doar 13 goluri în 55 de apariții...goluri frumoase ce-i drept, lobul ală ;) și Hagi ar fi putut să dea mai multe goluri la națională dar nu a reușit decât 35 în 125 de apariții. Să-ți dau un exemplu Mbappe are deja 112 goluri în 128 de apariții la PSG și 36 de goluri în 66 de apariții la națională, așa fac cei mai buni jucători din lume, Ronaldo din Brazilia are 247 de goluri în 343 de apariții în carieră dintre care 154 pentru Real Madrid. Messi are 672 de goluri pentru Barcelona și 76 pentru națională :) sunt mulți jucători extraordinari care eclipsează jucătorii noștri și chiar și cel mai bun Hagi nu a strălucit la Barcelona și Real Madrid dar întră în primii 50 jucători din toate timpurile din istoria fotbalului.

@@d3xmeister respect atunci o să vorbesc cu dvs, oricum să șiți că și acum nu sunt decât o mână de jucători geniali..ca și în anii 90 tot o mână erau, e cam o mână de jucători geniali pe deceniu...vă dau exemplu din anii 40-60 când ungurul Ferenc Puskas dădea 84 de goluri în 85 de meciuri, un gol pe meci, senzațional! sau Pele care a marcat 1087 de goluri în 1120 de meciuri jucate în carieră! cel mai mare mutant! nici Messi mutantul din zilele noastre nu a ajuns încă cifrele astea :)) ce vreau să zic e că nu e foarte diferit ce se întâmplă acum față de atunci, fotbalul tot fotbal e și e păcat că nu vă uitați, jucători precum Messi și Mbappe merită văzuți, finala de cupă mondială e printre cele mai tari meciuri pe care le-am văzut, gen cum a fost cel cu România - Argentina 94...și nu toți jucătorii moderni sunt mutanți, numai Haaland, Mbappe, Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, Harry Kane, Levandovski și încă vreo 2. Sunt și jucători fără cifre exagerat de mari dar cu un joc de artist gen Sadio Mane de la Liverpool care are 90 de goluri la echipa de club în 10 ani și la națională 34. Este un jucător foarte bun care ne aduce aminte de fotbalul ăla vechi. și Dembele de la Barcelona e bun pe driblinguri și are un joc artistic pe banda dreaptă...nu a jucat mai nimic în finala cupei mondiale dar are zile bune și proaste, asta demonstrează că nu sunt chiar mutanți :)) eu zic să vă uitați la PSG, Liverpool, Barcelona...au un joc creativ , eu aplic strategia asta...dacă e un meci de liga campionilor cu una dintre echipele astea mă uit...mă mai uit la mondiale/europene și din românia la derby-uri chiar dacă nu avem cel mai bun fotbal dar sunt câțiva jucători interesanți pe la FCSB, Farul, Rapid și de ce nu și la CFR dar acolo mă uit mai mult cum trollează Dan Petrescu echipele din vest și la bate prin tactica lui defensivă și goluri bazate pe faze fixe/cornere/centrări, a ținut-o în șah și pe Sevilla, a bătut Lazio, Celtic. Dan Petrescu sau Gheorghe Hagi trebuie puși antrenori la națională să ducă flacăra generației de aur. și ca să închei oricare geniu din anii 90 sau de mai demult ar fi tot genii și dacă ar juca azi.

In multe iti dau dreptate, discutia despre problemele mele cu fotbalul e foarte lunga dar in sumar: Am inceput sa ma sictiresc treptat incepand cu World Cup 2002 pe care l-au facut muci conducatorii, organizatorii si arbitri, pana atunci la mone WC era sfand, dupa ala nu m-am mai uitat la nici unul, aproape deloc. Apoi comercializarea agresiva a unui fenomen frumos, un bun al oamenilor, o sursa de bucurie, inspiratie, lectii de viata si emotii unice, incet l-au transformat intr-un club gen Bamboo, marca banu’ sa vezi curu’. Aici intra toate, de la campionatul romanesc luat de televiziuni obscure si transmis prin tigai de 3 lei, cancan-ul vietilor personale dus la extrem (nu ma intereseaza pe mine cui i-o baga noaptea Mutu). Si a 3-a, nivelul de efort pe care am inceput sa il vad prin campionatele mari si CL incepand de prin ultima parte a anilor 2000 este supraomenesc. Refuz sa cred ca au descoperit medicii de alimentatie nush ce ciuperci si radacini prin gradina de alearga aia 100% din primul minut pna in 90 de zici ca le-au pus baterii alkaline. Poate gresesc, dar asa am ramas eu cu impresia si cativa ani din astia au fost de ajuns sa nu ma mai uit deloc la fotbal, n-am mai vazut un meci de peste 10 ani, iar pe vremuri stiam numele oricarui jucator de la oricare echipa din prima linga din majoritatea tarilor si daca ma trezeai la 3 dimineata sa ma intrebi. Mentionez si ca nu am jucat niciodata la pariuri.

IDK what Raymar spends so much time on between uploading his videos. It's not like he gives so much extra secret info that most fans don't already know. It's just his voice that sounds convincing and the editing was okay. Some of his facts were a bit inaccurate and he's full of hot takes (although I agree with him on Pele not being the GOAT) This guy does it better imo, both channels just spit football facts but this guy does it for the purpose of football facts.
Yeah I try to keep it informational, maybe one day on a second channel or something I'll be show a bit more of my actual opinions and stuff, could be fun
