  • Bergkamp didn't lack form at Inter. Inter lacked tactical vision. It's basically asking Gandalf to make balloon animals.

That goal against Newcastle, to this day, is still my favourite ever goal in PL history. The temerity to even think about doing it. The speed of thought, the touch to take the pace off of a fast ball and to cushion it, set it up with perfect backspin to sit perfectly for him to spin 180 degrees, blind and in the opposite direction, run onto and then open up the body to coolly slot it in is pure magic.

The control, touch to take it away from the defender and then finally smash it beyond the keeper. Watching that live, he just did it all before your brain could compute what he'd done. • @@-MacCloud- there were players in the prem at the same time that scored/assisted far more per game,including scoring many great goals.I grew up watching that era, great strikers scored better than one every 2 games,bergkamp stats are underwhelming for a great player.He was great but there were multiple better strikers during his years in the prem,nevermind afterwards. In terms of dominant defenders,it is the same now as it was back then,only some top teams had one or two of them,the rest were average or poor. The late 90's and early 00's were nowhere near as physically tough as the 70's and 80's,that is just an excuse.It is usually great dribblers that are most affected by that,bergkamp was not a great dribbler especially compared to giggs,brazilian ronaldo,ronaldino,hazard,neymar,messi,zidane etc. Henry,shearer,fowler,nistelrooy,rooney even an attacking midfielder like lampard ,all easy outdid bergkamp. Ronaldo at madrid, but especially at barca, inter milan and for brazil ,had really amazing stats,usually comparable to the best of the more modern players. Great skill always allows the best players to score/create much more often than bergkamp did,and that is true for all eras.Watch his prem highlights video,its shocking how poor it is for a player so hyped up.

      @ppo9200@ppo920017 күн бұрын
    • @@ppo9200 You’re missing my point about defenders and I’m not sure if it’s intentional or not. Defending peaked in the late 90’s and 2000’s, before that it was rough and dirty, after that it’s been any touch and the player is fouled. Defending now has changed massively since then and has changed massively before too, but that is utterly beside the point. The defenders today are absolute trash compared to the 2000’s and they aren’t allowed to be defenders anymore. Not just that they aren’t allowed to kick people, the tackle has to be absolutely clean or it’s a foul, back then there was a little bit of give and take, take the ball fuck the player up a little, so long as you aren’t flying in or two footed if you drop the guy it’s fine. These days you can’t touch a player or he dives and gets the whistle. There is a reason why a mediocre striker today can match the goal scoring if the greats of the past and that has been the case for years. Since the 60’s defenders have been getting reeled in decade after decade and we are now at a point of over correcting an issue that did exist at one time. In the 90’s a goal or assist every two games was elite. That’s not to say there weren’t better players because there were, I think Cantona for instance was a player who played that deep-lying forward position better than Bergkamp and the stats follow, but if we have to use Cantona who was a legend to top Bergkamp in that role then Bergkamp was clearly very good. But let’s look at another United player who was elite in his day, Mark Hughes often liked to step off and play around the box instead of in it, his stats are a little worse than Bergkamps stats, he has more highlight reel goals but at the end of the day a Goal is a Goal. You don’t get two points for a rocket. So imo Bergkamp sits somewhere between those two players. Which makes him Elite. Add to that how technical he was and the ease with which he controlled and manipulated the football, he can serve as an example to train towards in that regard. I’m not telling you Bergkamp Is the GOAT, so relax. I’m just telling you that he was an elite player in his prime who played with excellent style and technique. You can’t argue me out of that because I already know I’m right by my standards and by the tests I use to determine the quality of a footballer now and then.
