What is a weapon in the Information Age? From microscopic "smart dust" tracking devices to DNA-tracing tech and advanced facial recognition software, journalist Sharon Weinberger leads a hair-raising tour through the global, unregulated bazaar of privatized mass surveillance. To rein in this growing, multibillion-dollar marketplace that often caters to customers with nefarious intents, Weinberger believes the first step is for governments to classify surveillance tools as dangerous and powerful weapons.

  • And here we are on KZhead, where Google gathers tons of data about our viewing habits, the comments we write, our subscriptions, the other users we interact with, our view-times, our language quirks, moods, psychological profile, etc, then adds all that to the plethora of data gathered across all other Google services, from paid feeds (like Google's purchase of Mastercard information or their acquisition of FitBit), and from what can be scraped from competing social media. Google's AI is top notch, so much so that they even build their own TPUs (tensor processing units). Machine learning is used to train on the large amount of data we all provide, using it to sculpt an "agent" (Google's own term) for each of us that models our personality, political views, preferences and future events (especially possible purchases but also things like health outcomes), in many cases better than we can define them ourselves. The power, that social network providers now have, has never been known to any historical figure or institution and none of it is regulated in any meaningful way. At some point, governments realised they'd been surpassed in terms of intelligence gathering and joined forces with social media. The chance that this power will not be abused horribly in the future is zero; it's already being abused right now.

  • I was involved in a car accident. Three cars were written-off and 3 damaged, mine being one of the three written-off. I had huge trouble when it came to claiming insurance on the person that caused the crash, and had her insurance company claiming I wasn't the driver and couldn't have been there. They claimed I was at a particular event when the accident happened, an event my twin brother was at. How they got this information has always bugged me, and I've no way of knowing. My Brother was photographed at the event but his name was nowhere on the list and nobody had posted his name on the pictures of him online. This video has opened my eyes a lot and would explain why they thought I was at this event. I don't know what to think...but it's possible they used face recognition to wrongly accuse me of being somewhere I wasn't.

    @feestuart2499@feestuart24993 жыл бұрын
    • Petitions do little to nothing when everyone in a place of power is corrupt. We have been on house arrest and every aspect of our lives destroyed for a year. Now they are threatening to force fake vaccines designed to experiment and depopulate us. If we don't, we won't even be able to buy food. All this over a virus that has never been isolated and proven to exist. I'm disappointed in the human race for being so gullible and naive. What I'm trying to say is that we are way past petitions. Good luck to you and your loved one's. I'm so sorry.

And a lot of us have begun to realize that our government does not need to know our daily movements. The premise that we need this type of surveillance is to keep track of terrorists, is a scare tactic that including myself, have believed since 9/11. We as a nation have to remember that we can use our voices through phone calls and votes to keep this type of behavior from happening.

  • Something to add. Chinas current surveillance system relies mostly on deep learning algorithms. That is layered neural networks that processes huge amounts of data to achieve the final outcome (tracking) The US system is slower but focuses on Machine Learning algorithms. It is not as widely applied but uses more self improving algorithms rather than huge data sets as in deep learning. While slower and currently lesser accurate - in the future the US won't need alot of your data in order to track you.

Have you noticed how the ads don't change anymore regardless of you opting in or out of ad customization? Our rights to privacy are being rolled right over and our government is doing next to nothing to stop that.

    @LegendFromWoW@LegendFromWoW3 жыл бұрын
    • I've noticed. Still being obviously and creepily spied on. The government? My government is using covid as an excuse to spy on us even more, and against the law too. We're all so screwed. We have to take some drastic majors against the people in charge and the elite now if we want change now, but for that to happen we have to unite and sadly, so far not enough people care enough to fight for those rights. We should never look up for the answers, they won't help us because they have their own interests, we have to look to each other and act ourselves. That's how it's been done all throughout our history.

  • Back in 1993 the government started tracking and following me where ever I went. They monitored my phone, watched me through the walls of my house, spread vicious lies about me (said I'm gay) I'm not, and I was being investigated for a variety of felonies, murder rape and being a major gang member.I don't know what started them to look in my direction as I'm not a criminal someone fed them a bill of goods and they found someone to test their weapons on. ME, I've learned of most hi tech they use to chase and intimidate me, they use mind reading(don'tbelieve me, look it up) dream scape, watch and speak through the tv set.when all this was happening i thought i was loosing my cookies, so I did research at the public library and found out everything I was going through did exist. I've been threatened by law enforcement in several locations in America. Now after all this time they talk outside my bed room window and talk loud enough to hear, that there going to bust me and I'm the most wanted person in the state I live in. Never been arrested or convicted of any felony . This country let's law enforcement do this everyday to some citizens in lots of places all over something needs to be done, forget the media I've asked several, they won't touch it. What would you do?

  • More laws will be ineffective against this problem. The problem starts with government power. The people have allowed the government to violate the 4th amendment via the USA PATRIOT Act and subsequent Acts. The main threats do not come from private corps. They come from our own governments. Governments buy information and tech from corps. If we insist that the govt must get a warrant first, then the market for this tech dries up.
