Shoshana Zuboff on surveillance capitalism | VPRO Documentary

Harvard professor Shoshana Zuboff wrote a monumental book about the new economic order that is alarming. "The Age of Surveillance Capitalism," reveals how the biggest tech companies deal with our data. How do we regain control of our data? What is surveillance capitalism?
In this documentary, Zuboff takes the lid off Google and Facebook and reveals a merciless form of capitalism in which no natural resources, but the citizen itself, serves as a raw material. How can citizens regain control of their data?
It is 2000, and the dot.com crisis has caused deep wounds. How will startup Google survive the bursting of the internet bubble? Founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin don't know anymore how to turn the tide. By chance, Google discovers that the "residual data" that people leave behind in their searches on the internet is very precious and tradable.
This residual data can be used to predict the behavior of the internet user. Internet advertisements can, therefore, be used in a very targeted and effective way. A completely new business model is born: "surveillance capitalism."

Currently: Nature is our greatest ally in so far as Nature gives us life and a place to live it, AND Nature is also our greatest enemy that is going to take it all away. (OSICA) c. Currently: 1. We are ALL going to die one day from something. 2. We are ALL going to forget everything we ever knew and experienced. 3. • Funnily enough, one of the only things I recall my grandad telling me - and he was the commercial director of a big firm - was never to buy from the brands that advertise the most. He told me that the money they put into advertising was money that wasn't put into research and production, therefore putting less emphasis into the product itself. This philosophy has served me well during my life.

    @Papamarmottin@Papamarmottin2 жыл бұрын
    • honestly though that doesnt make too much sense nowadays. Sure there might be firms that spend a lot on advertising (in whatever way) because they have to. But those firms spending a lot may also simply be those who sell well enough to be able to afford it. And in capitalism as we have it today, it doesnt matter what product you as a user buy, you will have tons of options; sometimes firms simply cannot afford not NOT advertise their stuff because it will simply stay unseen/unheard of. And thus if you sell more because you advertise well you can in turn invest more in research than those who didnt advertise in the first place. I'm really not a marketing enthusiast (although kind of working in it), but there's a saying I think makes more sense: nothing destroys bad products faster and more effectively than marketing well made. because people will (usually) realize if a product sucks or not.

    • @@sebastianeberth8373 to be fair, he said spend the most, not a lot. all businesses have to market themselves, but his granddad gave him the advice of not doing business with the company that does the MOST advertising. I personally think it still holds up if you separate advertisers by industry.

    • Surveillance capitalism is about you buying into your oppression while simultaneously being the consumer. This only exists because of coporate will, communism is a system that seeks out to abolish corporations thus abolishing the system (capitalism) that creates the surveillance industry in the first place. So if you are interested in this subject read Capitalist Realism by Mark Fisher and read Value price and profit by Marx.

Also, communism, marxism, doesn't work. It was debunked 50 years before it was created by Menger. Also, read Human Action by Mises; the first 100 pages should give you a clue. • @@effexon Good point re: liberty vs convenience. However, it more relates to a personal choice, or perhaps collective archetypes. A typical person is more than willing to trade lots of freedom for some convenience, especially the convenience of being a member of the herd. That's what Nietzsche called "herd mentality". You see that in your everyday life. How many of your friends just do what everyone else does, like what everyone else does, do nothing to actually exercise the freedom they already have? But my original point was about the way a given society is established - its legal framework, constitutional framework. If you carefully analyze any constitution, you'll realize that most of the freedoms aren't absolute, they are limited by some other freedoms or other interests of greater importance.

  • I'm pretty sure even if you leave your phone at home, they track you via others smartphones you are in proximity to. If their system sees your phone location at your home, not being used for a long period of time, but another device picks up your voice via the mic, or sees you via camera, they can still pinpoint your location, and log data on you. For example. I left my phone in my car while visiting my parents house, my dad and I were talking about buying a specific brand of pressure washer. That night, I get bombarded with ads for that brand of pressure washer. Keep in mind neither of us had searched for this before or after, or even anything in that category of tools. At what point does it go from being paranoia to a proven fact? I guess if I want to use technology, I'll just have to live with being subjected to this, as creepy as it feels. The first step of combating this trend is awareness.

  • Here's another rabbit hole: Fitbit and other smart watches can create a heartprint, a signature of your heart activity that is unique to you like a fingerprint. This same heartprint can be read by an infrared laser at significant distances so that your identity can be revealed even while you're wearing moderately thick clothing, masks, etc.

In fact they often get wrong the heartrate of people with darker soon because the green lights are not reading the skin as accurately as light skin. Only the Apple watch which uses infrared I think gets the most accurate reads. Also does this mean it loses accuracy if you take drugs that affect your heartrate such as large does of caffeine or anti anxiety medication?

On the other hand, if you want to see ads about specific products by all means, search away & you will receive ads for items like the ones for which you searched. Example:. I searched for info about a specific pistol I was interested in purchasing at a sporting goods shop near me. Within one hour of my Google search I began receiving ads for guns of all kinds, self defense shooting classes, shooting attire, shooting accessories, etc... I deleted the &/or skipped the ads & they finally diminished to almost none.

    • Yes it should unimaginable that there would be an actual industry buying and selling personal genetic information, including individuals entire genetic codes. And that information was not only voluntary but actually a paid FOR “service”. It’s mind numbing. And incredibly naïve on the part of the public for not seeing the danger in something like this. And its not even as though the 'Ancestry' companies provide a reliable product. Different companies will give different results and even with the same company its common for identical twins to receive wildly different ancestry results. I made a personal decision to never use those companies but my brother had the ancestry test done so now they have my family genome anyway.
