2001 Lexus LS430 Steering Tilt Motor Replacement
Important update on 9/25/2019 - My original video indicated that I did not know if you needed to replace the small e-clip on the end of the screw and I left it off because I lost it. My tilt function worked for about 2 months then the screw worked itself out of the nut and my steering wheel was stuck in the upright position. It turns out you do need to replace the small e-clip after you screw the motor back in. I bought a replacement e-clip for about $3 on lexuspartsnow.com. For a video on this repair, see: • 2001 Lexus LS430 Steer...
I did it!! This is my first time attempting to fix my 01 LS 430 Lexus. The dealership wanted to replace the whole steering wheel and all it components for $3,000. I told them I found a video on youtube and they said they don't fix individual components and only replace the whole thing. Thanks Dave, I was able to fix for just purchasing the part and my sweat equity. Much appreciate you putting the part number in at the end of your video. It works great. The only thing I deviated from was NOT taking out the screw with the spring behind it. I hope that does not mess up anything. Thanks for the video.
Dave Stone this is one of the best how to videos ever made. Thanks for making the video while repairing. I know it adds so much time to the job.
Highly recommend everyone add the e-clip on the end. If you don't, there's a chance the screw will work it's way out and damage the threads when it does so. The nut that it screws into for is very hard to replace. Very expensive mistake for me.
I have the Lexus 2000 GS 300; however, this video is so well-explained and filmed that I feel confident to perform this same repair on my car. Thanks a million, sir!
great video...one suggestion...shove a white towel in the open, it will catch the c-clip...this is a old plumbing trick...hope that help...well done on the video.
Thank you. These instructions also worked for my 2004 100 Series Land Cruiser.
Thank you for the well detailed video. I am encouraged to try this myself now that I see how simple the process is.
This video was exactly what i needed. Thank you for taking the time to create this - i really appreciate it!
You can loosen the plastic below the motor by removing a 10 mil. screw you can feel below the ignition switch and to the right, where the plastic touches the carpet. Pop out the bezel around the ignition and pull the plastic down about 3/4 of and inch then you can screw the motor in enough to swing the motor about 150 degrees and access the e-clips with a point and needle nose pliers. Do the same thing to put the e-clips back.
Fantastic guide - very clear and informative, thank you Definitely saving big money from the dealers. It's actually not hard to do at all.
This is a job I need to do on my 05 LS430. Thanks for your video David, it will give me the "push" to get on with it.
Great video! This helped me make the same repair to my Landcruiser 100 series. The mechanism differs slightly, but is similar enough that that your tips helped make the repair very straightforward. The advice on swapping the bolt bushings was important. I almost put everything back together and noticed the play in the wheel. Then I recalled your advice and that took care of the issue. Thanks for a great video
Just fixed my 04', a little bit different but your video definitely helps!
Great Video Dave! Now I know how to do this job myself… thanks for taking your time to explain how this all goes down!
Did this job today didn't need to remove the bottom allen screw with the spring just the two side screws and it spun right out. After removing c-clip. Thanks again for the video.
Thanks so much for this video. It is so clear that I think even I can do it. That e-clip thing has me a bit scared...but I will endeavor to persevere.
Dave, great work on replacing this motor. You vid makes things a lot easier for me having a visual. Appreciate you sharing. I think this is the best how to vids I have seen so far. Thanks!
I am glad it was helpful.
Absolutely amazing video. Straight to the point!
Happily mine is still working after 23 yrs. But when the day comes, I'll be ready. Thanks!
Great video! You can unplug the motor at the other side of the harness so you don't need to do as much work, but other then that this job was super simple and without this video it would have taken me +1-2 more hours. Thanks so much!
Dave Great Job and a very Informative Video nicely done. Thanks for sharing from Toronto Canada.
thank you for making this video! exactly what im looking for
Great help for me, Thank you for the Video with so much detail.
Thanks for the info, very helpful
Excellent video sir!
Well done! 24,000 views. Many failed motors, like mine. Thanks!
Thank you so much! Awesome video!
Did you put the other clip back on screw ? And WHY did the original fail? Did you test it? Was it corroded? Mine goes up/down but not in/out. Is there another motor? I didn’t see you try in/out ?
Do you know the part number for motor?? I have 2004 ls430 and the steering no longer extends outward toward driver.
Do you have to disconnect battery or can it be done with battery connected?
Does it end up mattering which position the motor is in (fully up or down) when installed?
Hi I'm Joseph my tilting motor keep running in the forward direction and control buttons doesn't work. Any solutions please?
Dave Can you please share the part number for both tilt and telescopic motor and also the e clip
I love this video thank you
Thank you
Thanks for this video! I just bought a 2001 LS430 YESTERDAY! Unfortunately, I have the opposite problem from what you have - mine tilts fine, but won't telescope out or in?!!! Question: is their only one 'motor' in the steering column and does that motor control both TILT and TELESCOPING - or are there two separate motors? Thanks!
They are separate motors. The telescoping one is further down (deeper) on the steering column. I have never had to replace that so I don't have a video for that.
Great video helped me replace my tilt motor. I thing is. You don't have to remove bottom screw that has spring in it.
Many people have had success leaving the bottom screw in but some people have had trouble screwing the new tilt motor in place with the bottom screw and spring still in place. I guess it would be OK to try leaving it in place and then if you have trouble, go ahead and remove it. Just make sure you don't lose the spring.
I also wanted to add 89231-60022 is toyota part number for this part. It is significantly cheaper than the toyota part number. It is the same part!!!
@@alexanderautomotivedetaili2209 is that the one you installed in your Ls430?
Hi can you tell me part number and where you got parts?
Do you have the PN for the tilt motor? Also, when tilt went out, did you also lose auto telescope? In my 2003 LS430 I have manual telescope, but no tilt. When I turn off the car the auto telescope retracts, but it does not return to position when I start the car and I have to manually extend the wheel again. I read on Club Lexus the issue may be related to a bad tilt motor (not sure how) and was wondering if you experienced the same issue. Thanks for putting out this video - it will help when I replace mine.
Yes, I had the exact same issue. The part number is at the very end of the video.
@@davestone927 thanks for the response. Did you diagnose the failure of the old motor at all? Any chance it was jammed or needed lubrication?
@@jacobedwards874 I had already purchased the new motor so I did not spend much time checking the old motor. I did notice that once I removed the old motor and hooked it up to power, it would spin like the new motor, so it was not completely dead. But the old motor did not have the power to lift the steering wheel.
How much the part cost ? Telescopic Steering wheel motor.
Is the telescope motor a different part or is this good for both? My problem isnt with the tilt but with the telescopic mechanism.
The telescope motor is a completely different part. I don't have a video for that repair.
Will it also fix the problem of losing the auto telescope after replacing a new motor? Thanks for the video.
Yes it did. Before I replaced the tilt motor, I could only manually extend the steering wheel. When I turned off the car, the steering wheel would retract back but not return to its previous position when the car was started again. Now it all works perfectly.
@@davestone927 Thanks! That's the exact same problem I met!
I have a 2003, your video was accurate for my situation. I lost the spring, it was stuck in there, I was trying to be careful, but it went into the dash area when I pulled it out. If you have the part number, please let me know. Also, I just unscrewed my motor 3 times and left it unplugged, as I currently am on the fence about spending the money to repair it.
Did it start to work automatically to the set position and then fold away when the car was turned off.
Yes. Once the tilt motor was replaced, everything worked ok.
Hey i have the opposite problem it goes up and down but wont go in and out . Will the tilt motor fix the issue
No. That is a different motor.
@@davestone927 do you know which one it is
@@randyorellana4371 I think it is: Lexus Part No.:89232-50041 MOTOR, POWER TELESCOPIC I have never replaced that part so I don't have a video for that one.
Have you found a fix? Have same issue it only goes up and down
If my steering wheel doesn't move in and out will I be able to remove the cover to replace the motor??
Yes it is possible. However the extension motor is different from the tilt motor and my video only described replacing the tilt motor. I have never had to replace the extension motor so you would need to find instructions for that repair somewhere else on KZhead.
So the E clip you lost, I'm guessing you just didnt put one back on that end of the drive motor shaft? BTW excellent video Thanks
Oops I see your follow up video now. Nice work
Did you replace the small e-clip on the end of shaft?
Yes I did. If you don't replace it, it may work for a while but eventually the screw can back itself out and freeze the tilting mechanism. So, definitely, save that clip and replace it.
MUST you re install the e-clip? When taking it off I lost in in the void of the wheel lol.
Yes! you must replace the clip. I did the same thing and lost the clip and it seemed to work at first. However, after a couple of weeks the screw mechanism completely backed out of the nut and the tilt mechanism froze up. You can find the clip on line and it cost about 3 dollars. I don't have the part number but as I remember I went to lexuspartsnow.com
Are there any videos on the telescopic motor?
Sorry, I have never had to replace that part so I don't have a video.
@@davestone927 thanks Dave my wife was in an accident in our GS430 I just bought the 05 LS430 and I like it but doesn't seem as well built as my 01 GS I have a repair list that includes quite a bit. Thanks for the info.
how much for the new motor?
I paid about $300 when I bought it a year ago.
Is there a separate telescopic motor? Where is it located
Yes, there is a separate motor that is "deeper" into the steering column. In order to replace it, you have to remove another plastic thing that is underneath the part you removed for the tilt motor. I have not had to replace that on my car so I don't have a video for that.
Yes, there is a separate motor for telescoping. It is further down the steering wheel shaft and you have to remove an additional plastic piece underneath to get to it.
These motors have to be “timed” or they set trouble codes.
how to do that?
But you forgot the put the E clip back at the end of the motor shaft
Yes I did not put the clip back on when I made the video because I lost it and that was a mistake. The tilt motor worked for a while but eventually, the screw mechanism backed out and got stuck. It IS important to replace both E clips.
