They Gossip About Foreigner, But He Speaks Their Language FLAWLESSLY

My half-African, half-Chinese friend June Mu @hysteau2s who grew up in Beijing speaks 100% flawless Chinese with a perfect Beijing accent, but also due to his genius linguistic talent speaks French, Spanish, various African languages, and somehow also pitch-perfect English that makes him sound like a New York local (he only came to America and learned English a few years ago). Because he doesn’t look very Chinese, we recently went out to some Chinese markets and people were STUNNED by his perfect Chinese - they thought he was a foreigner and didn’t believe him when he told them he actually grew up in China! And when they gossiped about him behind his back, he was able to reply in perfect Mandarin!

    • @@frequentsee3815 thats just an old person thing. Maybe there is a cultural element too, but in my experience even elderly americans do this, especially men. It's just an extra way of communicating and showing affection/camaraderie. Older generations had less expectation of personal boundaries (for better and worse) so that manifests as them being handsy when they are excited and happy about something.

    • 100% percent agree! I worked in customer service at Macy's in the women's shoe department. Even if someone's English wasn't good, I'd try my best to communicate with them and help them, but I can count numerous times where I'd try to communicate with people who clearly did speak English as a second language, but spoke in their native tongue to make my shift harder; insulting me directly to my face because they knew I couldn't understand their language. but I've always been really good at reading body language, and believe me, you can tell when someone is insulting you while smiling, looking you directly in the eye, knowing full well you don't speak their language. Unfortunately, I don't have an ear for language, BUT I can 9/10 times peg the language, and I would ask them if they're speaking ----- language. Surprised, they'd generally ask me how I knew, and I'd tell them that I can generally identify the language by the cadence and musicality of their speech. I could never imagine talking shite about someone in front of them, even if I knew they didn't speak English. The complete discourteously astounds me.

    • If you are living in America, there's no one that "looks American". A lot of Americans have European ancestry, but somewhere around 40% don't, so in America MOST people are going to assume that you are American until there's evidence otherwise. Similarly, in America, you meet every conceivable "mixed" ancestry. You become used to seeing lots of different mixed ethnic backgrounds. We can pick out those backgrounds from features, sometimes, because we have more experience seeing them. But countries like China or Japan are almost entirely ethnically homogeneous. A person there has very little experience seeing people that are not part of the monoculture of their country.

  • The feeling you had when June spoke Chinese and French is the feeling all the people you talk to in your videos get times 10! It’s also the feeling us viewers get. Such an incredible channel. The people that don’t speak English seem so grateful of your presence.

  • That's one of the best of your films for ages xiaoma. Really enjoyed that one! I'd love to see some more with June, he's a great character and brilliant on film, and that film had me smiling from beginning to end. The reactions though, I now know from my own experience. I've only been here 6 months, and recording my language journey... and I get the same reactions, even if I'm just ordering something to eat! I don't secret film though, otherwise, I'd capture some great ones, where you can see all the staff looking for the best English speaker to serve me... then I order in Chinese, and usually, the people who walked away just will start laughing, and saying I didn't think he would speak Chinese. It simply because not many foreigners can speak much if anything. I think it's a shame, as learning Chinese is so damn interesting.

Seems strange in a way because in England, we never say, 'wow your English is great!' to foreigners. @@seanroberts381
