Also thanks to Chang Lai Fishballs Noodles (55 Bayard St) and 456 New Shanghai (69 Mott St), which are some of my favorite restaurants in NYC Chinatown and they’re awesome people running these restaurants, so you should definitely check them out!

    • True, but ppl who only know basic Chinese are able to respond and understand when to respond. Like me, I am Cantonese. But I can guess and respond to some Mandarin words in English (I'm actively learning Mandarin now tho) is possible. I try to do that too out of politeness in engaging in basic conversations. I guess if we're talking about a scenario where it can also apply would be: I am trying to say that there are ppl who will say they don't understand the language even when they can understand basic words, bc for them it's not considered enough to be able to say they know the language. I really appreciate these collab videos, and when they shared their first meeting video I didn't know Vincent was acting/it was staged!

  • Even though I know this particular friend is only pretending not to know Chinese, I think this video is a good reminder that we cannot assume the languages a person speaks based on their appearance. I have a Chinese-American friend who was transracially adopted into a monolingual English-speaking white family, and doesn't know any Chinese, but is highly fluent in Spanish and Arabic. People never expect that. I am white and have a Black friend who is Afro-Latino, and when we speak in Spanish, people are always shocked to see a white and black person speaking Spanish. Our world has reached a level of globalization where we can no longer rely on ethnic appearance as a predictor of language knowledge.

You can imagine the shock of seeing him speaking Chinese asking if people wanted to learn about god. I learned 4 languages in Utah. It was not hard to have people to talk too. • For anyone wondering about the Mormon Missionary guy, he's from the same school I went to in South Jordan Utah. They have a immersion program where you spend half of elementary school in a Chinese classroom. I participated all the way up to 9th grade, so I can speak pretty good Chinese for a white person. I'm not a Mormon myself, but I'm aware of how hard they make those three weeks to learn Chinese as fast as possible, which is why his Chinese is pretty good.

  • I'm a chinese-canadian who doesn't speak chinese because of the one child policy. It's really hard for me to be in chinese spaces because I always feel like an outsider and that people will see me as different. I have to remind myself that even though I don't speak the language or have a strong connection to the culture, it doesn't make me any less Chinese.

    • Its time to learn-- never too late. Not trying to sound elitist either, but its not a bad thing to learn the language. Its part of the culture and preserving it is important. What is a culture without a language and traditions and its people? The world is already becoming more uniform.

    • Mexican-American here. Happens to some of us too, I'd say its 50-50 for first-generation kids who grow up speaking Spanish at home or not; happens to every race who leaves their home country. Unfortunately, its a common outcome for families moving to Anglosphere nations, their governments rely on civil unity and allegiance to the nation-state rather than ethnic-culture (language/dialect, tradition, religion, morals and values). My Spanish is now B1-B2 intermediate, but I also felt the social pressure of not feeling Hispanic enough. But as the user said above, never too late learn a language. Begin by committing to a few minutes a day then expand. Best to start with the language that's relevant to your life.
