jane austen and colleen hoover in the same tier is the greatest crime against literature
See it that way: The best Colleen Hover is the same as the weakest Jane Austen in his opinion.
And I bet, if he had 6 tiers, Pride and prejudice would be above Colleen Hover.
@@KiraFriede still unacceptable lol
@@KiraFriede jane austen would use colleen's books as toilet paper
They’re not even in the same vain of writing for me. One reads like a 15 year trying out fanfic for the first time and the other is utterly iconic.
I did not just see a Colleen Hoover book put on the same tier as Pride and Prejudice.
oh wow
It’s a scandal
Same man, same...

I don‘t understand the hate toward Collen Hover books. Can someone explain it?
using love island quotes as tiers is the best choice. icon behavior.

I’m going to film another episode of wattpad fanfiction reactions on Friday!
@@jack_edwards omg pleaseeeee check out ao3 instead of wattpad. So much better and some genuinely amazing writing. Really interesting seeing what people write when there is no monetary incentive. Anyway love the vid for the single nerds on valentines day 😁 ❤

I was actually coming on hopeful he might have given us it as a treat today tbh lol
I had to do a double take when you said and quote “Pride and Prejudice is fine.” My brother in Christ we need to talk.
We all know he much prefers Emma
I think credibility is lost once pride and prejudice and night circus are put in the same tier as CoHo -.-
Emma is much better
@@Stefanseyes I LOVE YOU SO MUCH FOR SAYING THIS
Wait… is he a Christian?
i think most of the flack colleen hoover gets is due to the romanticizing of abuse and all her very bizarre writing choices, like literally writing “we both laughed at our sons big balls” which was about a literal baby. Also the fact that she blocked and ignored girls who were calling out her son for SAing them…
Also the fact she pretty much waged war with some teenage YT who gave her books a negative review
exactly!!!
And for trying to romanticize step sibling incest
@@minkstar9021 are you talking about Caleb Joseph?
Finally, someone said it!
I'm sorry? No Jane Eyre Laid Bare? ✋🏻 How accurate is this list, Jack? 🤔
Lmao
came to comment the exact same thing
I love how this book has become a running joke in Jack's community 🤣
definitely in tier all my eggs in one basket no question !!
Lmaoooo 💀💀💀
Bestie the reason people give Colleen Hoover so much hate at this point is because aside from the kind of cringe writing she’s known to be kind of an awful person too. Her son was accused of SA and Colleen blocked the girl in question (Allegedly, don’t sue me CoHo)
bro feck, thats a rumour , colleen hoover said abt the whole case in public, what actually happened was that her son asked some girl in snap to send him a pic ( you know what ), they never actually met and no SA happened, CoHo actually went to the girl and apologised for his message in person and she said she regrets abt his son's behaviur ... Just dont believe what rumours say...
Also the coloring book she proposed for It Ends With Us. Which is not only highly innapropriate but that also leads her to make more of a profit on what she romantisises throughout her books.
@@cloudriilejion4589 have you read the book? Bc she doesn’t romanticize it 😂 like it’s a meh book but it’s clear she’s saying abuse is bad in it
@SlowlyBex I agree, I honestly don't get why people say the book romanticises abuse. Yes, the main characters is having trouble leaving her abusive partner and yes, in the beginning, she tries to excuse the behaviour. But that's the reality of domestic abuse for many people. It's not easy to leave a situation like that.

Shouldnt lolita be here too? Idk i never read it but i thought it was a (toxic) love story
@@jaklin225 Lolita was about grooming and abuse, its not a love story. Vladimir Nabakov never meant for it to be one either. Calling it romance is wrong on so many levels...
@@lilicake4208 ohh okay, thanks for letting me know. I never read it, just heard little snippets on the internet thats its a good read :) sorry if i offended somehow
@@jaklin225 Oh no its fine. Its just that there is a lot of misinformation about Lolita on the Internet, and pedophiles use it to defend themselves by using the book as an excuse as well.
Jack, Colleen Hoover and Jane Austen on the same tier is a crime!
Hoover’s work, “women are illustrated as passive objects, only able to derive agency when their male counterpart chooses them,” and her stories feature “romanticization of toxic masculinity, unhealthy codependent relationships and abusive, controlling behavior.”
JACK I remember I finished The Song of Achilles while playing one of your “read with me” videos and it was so awkward because you were calmly enjoying your book and I was SOBBING for 30 minutes straight!!! Even if you go in knowing the outcome, the way she has written it is gut punching.
I find it so weird that people actually cried with SOA because I read it and gave it a 3 star review. The writing was pretty but imo, it was lacking depth and emotion. But I ended up reading Circe right after and it is my all time favourite book ever, and I saw jack review it and he only gave it 4 stars 😂
@@sin3358 THANK U! Felt the same way about Song of Achilles
soa is my favourite book, its the book that got me back into reading, its the book i based my “myths” research paper on, its the book i gifted my best friend as a present bcs i love it that much. Its not everyone’s cup of tea but once you get inside this little world it creates and get attached to it you can never go back. For me it feels like a time travel to ancient greece and makes me realise how many things can change in thousands of years but love can be felt the same. I just love it

there’s a difference between love stories and romance books and most of these are just romance 😅 and that colleen hoover book next to pride and prejudice, jack????? i cannot believe my eyes
there’s definitely a difference - I’d consider 23 out of 42 of these books romance books, meanwhile the others feature love stories
love that the video title isn't "every love story i've read, tier-ranked" -- it's "every love story in literature." If jack hasn't read it, it doesn't exist. 💃
yeah I thought it was going to be about ranking love story tropes in general lol
I love that this isn't just about the typical romance books but books about love - real, heart-tearing love. I've read most of the queer books on your list (all recommended by you, btw, so forever grateful) and oh. my. god. the tears that I've cried. I feel like so much life has been added to my days thanks to them - and to you! So thank you!
I feel like the brilliance of Normal People is how terrifyingly realistic it was. It broke me for days.

I'd love to watch jack read Mafia romances and be disgusted in almost every sentence lmao
Jack’s dissatisfaction with Spanish Love Deception is my favourite trope on his channel right now. I’m always amazed on the new metaphors he comes up with to describe how much he despises the book. The tension is palpable and I’m here for all of it 😂
Love that you did this! But wow petition for Jack to reread pride and prejudice until he moves it up a tier
yes
Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase will forever be the blueprint for me. The fact I’m in my 20s and they are still the standard is a testament to them being the best love story of all time for me.
Jack hating the Spanish love deception in every video is the most consistent thing in my life 🤣
I’m always so happy when I find someone else that loves Emma. It seems like so many people don’t get how great it is.
It's the best!
I LOVED daisy jones and the six!! Such a beautiful way of writing and describing an “imposible love”
I want to read Daisy Jones and the Six so bad!! I put the book on hold at my library but there are 26 people ahead of me 😕
I 👏 LIVE 👏 FOR 👏 THIS 👏 CONTENT. The shade. SHADE. Rake them over the coals. Tell me all about these flops. I am LIVING. (Also, thanks for the top tier recommendations 👌)
I read Open Water a few weeks ago because of your recommendation and honestly didn't really expect to like it - but I just cried through most of it? And in the best way possible? It's so heartachingly vulnerable, thank you so much for recommending it.
I loved this is how you lose the time war. Such a beautiful written story. I loved how tender the letters are and how they call each other by things that are red or blue like "my blue-berry" "my sunset"
I read The song of Achilles yesterday and it is my absolute favourite book of all time. It is beautifully written and I literally cried for over 10 minutes. It deserved its own tier
Hey, I just came to say that if you enjoyed SOA, then I HIGHLY recommend you Madeline millers other book, "Circe". While SOA is about queer love and breaking stereotypes about men being unemotional, Circe is about the journey of a woman finding herself and it is so beautiful, heartbreaking, emotional. If anything, Miller wrote this book even better. Please give it a try since it's the same author :)
@@sin3358 Thanks, I'm gonna read that soon
I think people hating on Colleen Hoover is only mildly because of her writing, and mainly because of her romanticizing and normalizing abuse, misogyny and in general toxic relationships. Especially since she sells her books as romance which then creates a really problematic view on relationships especially since it’s often marketed to a younger audience.
Respectfully, watching this right after finishing "I Kisses Shara Wheeler" and rating it 5 stars was kinda jaw-dropping lol
Even I gave it 5 stars
same! i liked it quite a bit
Same, it’s actually my fave book from the author hahaha. I liked it more than RWRB. Like okay, it might be predictable but what I love most abt the book is the side characters. And maybeee ‘manipulative popular blonde girl’ is like… my thing, so I might be a bit bias here hahaha
lmao i gave it 5 stars too. because i just couldn't stop relating to how queerness & religious trauma & repression was portrayed in the book. i have actually given all cmq books 5 stars because something about the way they write queerness just hits me right in the heart.
same! enjoyed it i didn't care for her book about the gal stuck in time on the train though...
A la hora de rankear "the Spanish love decepcion", y decir la comparación de la sopa, imaginé la tensión de ver tu plato, luciendo absolutamente delicioso, y tener que esperar a que traigan la comida de tus acompañantes… I felt that, man, I really did.
I just finished Alone With You in the Ether yesterday and enjoyed it so much. Olivie Blake is brilliant. I first encountered her work on AO3 and it’s so good to see she continues to produce beautiful work.
Jack, I cannot thank you enough for the North & South appreciation. It's SUCH a criminally underrated book, it baffles me how people don't talk about it enough 😭
One of my absolute favourites! Time for a reread I think.
No literally!!! I love North and South
My favorite story about love is "A Prayer for Owen Meany." It's not about romantic love, but there's more genuine love in that book than in most romance novels.
When I saw Alone With You In The Ether in your reading list, I got so excited for you to discuss it because I deeply love that book!! So happy you liked it 💛
I want Jack to read some full-blown smut and rank them 😆

I love your reviews because you never give away too much of the storyline. So happy I found you, I usually fast forward other booktubers because of spoilers but I watch your videos from start to finish. Thank you.
I love your tier ranking videos so much! You give lots of reflections on lots of books, and I always come away with several that I look forward to reading. Today was no exception, thanks.

thank you for this lol - as someone who hasn’t found much romance that intrigued me, i’m using the whole first tier as a starting point for getting into romance and i’m excited!!
this is such a good video idea and i’d love to see it done with more genres! i feel like it’s a quick and easy way for people to get recommendations too, and read a (hopefully) guaranteed great book^^
Thank you for the Emma appreciation and the other relationships in the novel. My favourite book featuring a love story is The Fault In Our Stars - full of very quotable lines, it also has the added complication of a cancer storyline and how it affects relationships (not only romantic but the relationship between Hazel Grace Lancaster and her parents, especially her mum, is beautiful) and it RIPPED my HEART out. I was bawling on the floor at the end (don't read at night kids) Also, Agustus Waters was my first fictional love. I'm sorry, but I had to use their full names, because they use them in the book.

Just finished Cleopatra and Frankenstein the other night and it was the first love story that really made me swoon since Normal People!! Loved it so much & you're so right, the peripheral characters are so engaging. I feel like I want an Audrey spin-off, a Quentin spin-off, a Zoe spin-off, etc

Song of Achilles stayed with me for so long afterwards! Have you read “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe?” It is such a beautifully written book and a wonderful love story.
The Aristotle and Dante books are my absolute favorite romance series!!! I’m obsessed with them, I’ve read them about 5 or 6 times
one of the sweetest romances I've ever read was in a cozy fantasy called legends & lattes. I feel like folks who are married and really love their partner write that sort of affection and warmth really well. another fave was in priory of the orange tree, which was epic fantasy!
I can’t with the love island categories… as the islanders would say “I’m buzzin.”
Really love seeing specifically Jack’s train of thoughts on One Last Stop between the 2 categories 👁️👄👁️

Jack Edwards finally read and loved Alone With You in the Ether!! I can die happy now.
Your channel is a treasure! Never have I ever been so agree with a book ranking❤
The Raging Quiet by Sherryl Jordan is definitely my favorite love story, and it has such a warm and unique feel to it. It's so rare for me to encounter books like that nowadays, and I have never read a more intimate dynamic between two characters.
Omg u know who Sherryl Jordan is? Are u a New Zealander? My fave Sherryl Jordan books are the Winter of Fire and the Anger of Angels.
Whoa, this comment gave me flashbacks to my teenage years, I loved this book, I forgot how awesome her books are
If you haven't read "Maybe in Another Life" by Taylor Jenkins Reid yet, I highly recommend it. It's a beautiful story about different kinds of love. Glad to see your love for The Song of Achilles is still going strong. I picked it up because of you and loved it so much, I got a tattoo inspired by it. :)

I have read Lie With Me because of you, Jack. I ALSO LOVE THIS AS MUCH AS YOU DO.
THANK YOU SM for saying call me by your name is not a healthy relationship!!! I feel like everyone's shipping these two to death while I thought they have a quite problematic power dynamic because of their age difference. Well I will say they absolutely have chemistry
I think a lot of people criticise this relationship actually, and by extension the book. Is the relationship unhealthy? Absolutely. But is it a good book? Absolutely!

Benedict's, Eloise's, and Hyacinth's books are my favorites!!!
Girl he started the series and hated it.
Yessss, great to see some love for 'North and South'! My favourite classic novel, and I love how seamlessly Elizabeth Gaskell weaves together social and interpersonal issues. I'm always recommending it to people who want to read more 19th century literature.

Red white and royal blue TOTALLY read like fanfiction I'm so glad you agree. It could have been about 200 pages shorter, the political subplot was so boring.
I feel the same way about Emily Henry books. Beach read was SO DULL it put me in a reading slump 🥲
I think we have similar taste in the genre so this is very helpful for me in choosing which romance book to read next and which ones I'm probably better off removing from my TBR.
