It always makes me feel better about having no idea when none of the contestants do either.
Same here. I hate it when I can’t even give an educated guess. I bet my Daddy got this one.
I looked up short in German and found kurz, thought it might be Kurtz from HoD but I'm curious are the question writers getting smarter or are the standards for contestants getting slacker, of the Finals I've seen of late not many people are even trying to guess.
Same here too. I had no idea. Oh well!😊
Just looking at the faces and body language of the contestants told me right of that none of them had the slightest clue
"I know a little German...he's right over there" - Hillary Flammond
Or, from _History of the World Part I_ "Bring me a small lyre." And a dwarf is presented saying things like, "The check is in the mail!" 😄
Yay! I got it correct! Thank you Duolingo for German!
It all came down to their FJ bets and Deb made their right wager and won this match.
Sometimes my hard work learning German pays off (had no idea about the book or the character, but got it right away)
Masterful wager by the winner, great job!
Totally, how smart does one have to be to KNOW they won't know the answer to the next question? It's one of the most intellectually impressive moves I see on Jeopardy, imo.
This was a brutal clue. I also notice the usual troll isn't commenting about how he read the book in question recently and thus knew it right away... because I think less than 1% of the home viewers actually got this one. It requires having read that book and having recalled its characters. If you read it in high school, that becomes difficult...
I'm usually good in this category and would have bet the farm. I would have gone home a loser, not even getting the crappy home game!
There were three separate clues in that answer and none of them helped me.
This was a trick question! I guessed Klein. 😤
I only thought of Curt/Kurt -- but couldn't get Kurtz out of that (despite the additional 1902 clue).
Eine Kleine Nachtmusic. Yes that would get you little. That was as far as I got with it too.
Given my German knowledge, my first thought was Kurz, but then I thought, Klein sounds more like a name. Either way, it didn't help as I did not know the work.
I thought “Klein” also and it’s a common name. Little did I know…
Ah, I was very close with “Kurt”!
The Horror .. The Horror ..
During the show I said colonel accidentally.
Dang. That was brutal,
I just re-read this book late last year and I didn't even get this.
Knowing a bit of German and knowing the novel and the 1970s movie based on it helped.
I suddenly feel smart. I don't know anything about the literary character in question, but I've taken German. The German word for short is kürz.
I got it because I speak German. I had no idea who the character was, even though I read and liked the story...
I read Conrad's Heart of Darkness and although I took one semester of German I could only get 'kleine' or little. Oh well. Ich war etwas klein oder kurtz... I guess.
Congratulations Bilodeau on advancing to the semi finals
I got this Final Jeopardy! clue right.
I wonder if they would have accepted "Who is Kurz?".
I guessed Willie Wonka. 🙃
At least the winner didn't do any weird gestures with her hands this time
I was not thinking about HOD which I read. I got the FJ correct because I know German.
I can't believe I didn't get this one. I guessed "Klein." Mein Deutsch ist ein bissen rusty.
I thought it was Klein because it can be used to describe someone who is short and Klein is a very common last name 😅
I would have said Colonel Kurtz and would have likely missed it.
My guess was Klein, but that means little, not short. Ahh well.

It’s the same as Brando’s character from Apocalypse Now.
Correct author, wrong enigmatic character. It would help if I knew any German.
For the nobody who is pondering… I went with the ostensible adult shop owner from my favorite of the author’s works.
Ridiculously obscure.
It's not at all. All you needed to know is the German word for short.
*her response
German 101
Glad German has SOME romantic language roots. Didn't know German for short, but knew French was court. Initially went to Kurt Vonnegut, except that is the author and much younger. Took a bit to get there, but I got there.
Sure you did.
Ich hab gar keinen Plan, worum das eigentlich ging, aber „kurz“ kenn ich wohl 😅
Don't know the book, but I know how to say "short" in German. Couldn't finish Heart of Darkness.
Give it another try. It's brilliant.
Why don’t I know German? I feel like an idiot
Don't exaggerate.
Kurtz, one of the few German words I know.
Kurz
Why do they bet money instead of $0 dollars when they have no answer?
They bet before the clue is given
This was a terrible clue. Triple stumper and very vague
I thought it was just a difficult clue to figure out. Especially if you know very little about the German language. I had no guess for it. Overall, I was in a group that struggled tonight. On to the next one tomorrow night.
So a $0 wager (which is NOT the same as not wagering by the way) pays off.
If I recall the dialogue properly, the Avengers question answer was actually Tony Stark, NOT Iron Man.
Iron Man is Tony Stark.
@@LegenDove, the point being he said it as Stark, NOT in his armour. So that makes the clue answer Tony Stark.
KURTZ, Deb is a semifinals congratulations 🎉
It's not Kurtz.
