Pure figurehead. The Governor General (in theory the Monarch's representative in Australia) does have some powers, and before exercising those powers would be expected to 'consult' with the Monarch. But this is really just pure tradition and symbolism. The reality is the Governor General, always an eminent Australian in recent times, is appointed by the Australian Prime Minister, which the Monarch will approve without exception. So in practice Australia already has its own head of state, appointed by the government of the day. Everything else, and reference to "The Crown", is totally powerless tradition and history from our early days as a British colony.

If there was ever a time to become a republic it is now - however far too late .
Just remember though that Charles is about 75 so probably won't reign for that many years and then William will be crowned King. I would say, just from my observations that William seems that he will be a good king having had a front row seat of how his grandmother Elizabeth reigned, plus how his father and to a lesser extent his brother have behaved. just my opinion. It's irrelevant what the governor general or anyone in officialdom says. Britain has had no authority over Australia since the start of Federation. Their monarch does not reign over us. However, the result of a Republic referendum saw Australia choose to remain with the Commonwealth. That was of our own choosing and can be taken to mean that we acknowledge the British monarch in a symbolic way, not as our monarch in the traditional sense. The Commonwealth countries are allies, and friends, and that's good for all involved!!!!

What constitutional rights? The Australian constitution doesn't guarantee any rights, and is incredibly specific about the powers of the Governor General, never mind the fact most "rights violations" happened at the state level not the federal so not even in the purview of the Governor General.

Well its not up to the GG. This is a matter that needs a public referndum - toremain part of the money sucking commonwealth or to become a Republic. Its a matter for the people of a country whether to remain - just like Charlieboy said a month ago. The GG is not actually the GG right now coz they swore their oath to the Queen who is now dead - so they cannot make this decision for Australians at all. REFERENDUM REQUIRED AUSTRALIA AND NZ - MAKE IT HAPPEN.

If the the monarch dies the oath doesn't die with it, it transferred with the crown, though it is traditional for such oaths to be reaffirmed to the new monarch. I believe only the Victorian government actually can't sit without reaffirming it's oath to the new King. Also you didn't answer my question. Why would we want to be a republic?
