Samsung IS working on a transparent smartphone. That much we're sure about. But I'm almost certain it will fail, for ONE reason...

  • There's a reason transparent displays are so popular in sci-fi, and it's not because the displays are practical: It's because they have advantages in shot framing. You can show what's on the display and the face of the actor reacting to it at the same time, or show them looking at the screen in a natural pose without the screen obstructing the view of their face. Audiences want to see the face of the actor, they want to see the emotion - and transparent displays just make that easier to shoot. The Expanse uses this to great effect.

    @vylbird8014@vylbird8014 Жыл бұрын
    • I guess it can also show what's on the screen at the same time so if framed perfectly the audience will see the actors expression and also get to see what they are seeing to judge it themself. this is better than needing two clips cut together. A video call is best example of this. The audience can see the person in the call and the main actor at the same time. But yes being able to see the actor is the biggest reason and the rest is just extra

  • I think a far better use of a transparent LED screen would be implementing it into a car's windshield. Imagine using Google Maps but you can see an arrow augmented onto the road, directing you where to go. No more guessing as to which road you need to turn onto. Or maybe a warning system that highlights a vehicle or pedestrian before they end up too close to you. No more Change Blindness effect. Or better yet, it could be used to enhance or alter surrounding color for those with Color Blindness.

    @ArthurChen@ArthurChen Жыл бұрын
    • They have these implemented in a far more economical way than actually having the windshield itself be an entire screen, and they're called HUDs. A windshield display is too expensive to consider for most consumer vehicles, and it's really gonna suck when it gets a crack.

  • Having seen the iPhone 14 Pro, I think the idea of a transparent screen that can darken/present an image over glass where an object may sit behind it, may be the way you can hide the front facing camera. So, the rest of the phone screen would be a regular display, but for the area where the camera sits on the screen, you could have that bit go clear when on a video call/taking a selfie, and then when you don't need the front camera, the transparent screen sitting over that section of the camera could mask the camera. Goodbye bezzles, hole punches and other such things.

  • I'm pretty sure as the technology advances it will be able to develop options to blackout the screen from the other side for privacy mode. also options would eventually be provided to artificially make the front screen completely black while dynamically showing all other colors and pixels for what ever you are watching. The only down side I really see to such a thing is the thousands of dollars it will cost yet how fragile and prone it will be to breaking. but all the other issues about the transparancy of the screen could be easily mitigated with smart dynamic background color filters which can act as a regular blakck screen phone. and with the simple switch of the settings you can go back to transparency mode. I like it.

The same technology could also help to filter the light that enters the home as the screens basically use liquid crystals to manipulate the light coming from the backlight. A transparent phone sounds like a gimick, but it's only the beginning.

You look through two eyes to create depth, so any image on the screen won't match with what's behind it. Also the angle you view through the screen will affect where the image is, and you eyes will need a different focus to see the screen and background.

  • Another possibility is our current chip boards are basically two dimensional in that the circuitry only exists on the face of the board. Transparency may open up new doors to transmit information to a sensor that can read the entire object

    • @@bobuboi4643 I’m currently holding a phone with a clear case on, and it hasn’t yellowed despite being my case for 2 years. The dust problem applies to all cases, and my case definitely does have dust that collects near the camera. Also, I’m by no means defending transparent phones, I agree with you in that they’re rather useless.
