Layer of TV there to show the customer their entire bill, but still face to face with the cashier, then potentially even build NFC payments right into a corner of the monitor. Could be an all in one retail machine, which is crazy cool. Imagine going to an airport or a hotel and them being able to straight-up show you a list f the available options. The future is so cool if we don't all die first, man.

  • I see a lot more potential for this technology (transparent display) being used in things like smart glasses compared to TV, if the cost of this transparent display is a lot higher than traditional displays. If something like a smart window is desired, a traditional display and a 4K camera on the other side of the wall will do the job. I proposed a type smart glass, being one whole curved panel, much like those curved displays. The display is divided up in sections for different resolution and functionality. The central small section where the eyes are staring at accounts for maybe 20% the total area have 70% of the pixel count, using for complexed AR functions, while the outer regions have a lower resolution, and only provides a very basic UI, like time, heart rate, location and speed…

    • Yeah, see-through displays are great for movies and games, though, since it means you can have the screen's content and the actor's face in the same shot. Not to mention all the dramatic 360s you can pull off while keeping everything visible. That's undoubtedly why they show up so much. But it's particularly funny in the new Star Treks, where they don't merely have transparent screens floating in the air, but all interactions are done entirely through gestures and transparent virtual control surfaces. So you can't see the screen and instruments correctly, AND you get no tactile feedback. And they're using these things to fly their ships! Looks great onscreen, but it would be a nightmare to actually use.

  • I think the best use case for this technology (transparent screen) is in heads up displays. Both small sized (think sunglasses) and large glass sections (think vehicle windows/windshield). Basically anything where you want or need to see through the glass but want to superimpose additional information without using cameras and computers to capture the images then process them in near real time. In these scenarios a 1080, or even less, resolution would be more than sufficient. Or for the rich folk, they can get entire windows in their house/condo/apartment made out of these screens, add in a darkening rear layer while watching full resolution content and you have a great window/HUD/stealth TV combination.

But if you go straight for it it becomes harder to justify this on your tax write off, it is better to just create new and new projects as you get better at it so you can renew the period you're allowed to invest on it without paying taxes.

  • Besides being used as a snazzy display commercially or a super expensive display piece, I could see this being used in some kind of business or teaching setting, where you could have people sat either side of the desk and still be able to see each other through the screen. Maybe for for presenting ideas to a client or something, or as a visual aid whilst still being able to be sort of face-to-face with them. On the other hand, with VR/AR coming along as it is, if you have that kind of money to spend and that's what you're going for, that kind of does that better in a lot of cases. Not super useful, but probably pretty neat in a few very specific scenarios.

If it could be integrated into the case merchandise is stored in, it could let you look up information about the product if touch is enabled or can point you towards specials if integrated into cooler/freezer doors. • Nope. Conventional LCD screens are normally black. You need a backlight, this OLED technology is a whole n'other level

      @matthiasd.1399@matthiasd.13992 жыл бұрын
  • Why not combine that tech with liquid crystal behind it that can black out the panel when it's powered on? Then with a layer of transparent OLED in front, we could finally have those display/windows in lots of sci-fi

      @WASH3D@WASH3D3 жыл бұрын
    • Because it will reduce the transparency even further. You have to polarize the transmitted light, so you lose 50%, ITO/Liquid Crystal is like 80% transmissive at best, and these TOLEDs are like 70% transmissive at best. At the end of that stack you have like 28% of the light being transmitted, so it's less transparent than a two way mirror.

    • With the right context, this would make a good 'window'. If the space behind it was normally dark, but you wanted it to act as a window when it wasn't, it is about perfect.
