Super Bowl 53 is known for being one of the most boring football games ever because of the lack of offense, but that lack of offense from the Los Angeles Rams was a result of one of the greatest coaching performances of all time by New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. The Rams offensive scheme was torn to shreds by Belichick's defense, and has yet to return to its former state of dominance.

Great video - point of info: The 6-1 defense was first used by the 1950’s NY Giants and then morphed into the 4-3 defense. Basically giving the two edge guys flats responsibilities too. This is why Belichik always drafts/acquires personnel with high intelligence acumen who bring multiple skillsets to the table. For FLEXIBILITY

Van Noy, Hightower, and Collins aren’t perennial All-Pros but they can do everything well and are a huge reason for NE’s good defense. Chung was a big piece, being able to cover and play the run well. And then NE always seems to have a stacked CB room with Gilmore, Butler, JC, Jason McCourty and Revis passing through the ranks. All that and a rock at FS in Devin McCourty who has always been really good. Those guys are as big of a factor in the Pats second dynasty as Brady.

Awesome film breakdown, you did a great job with that!!! I was actually at this game. I got a job selling beer at Mercedes Benz stadium before the season started just so I could get in to the Super Bowl for free. I worked the whole Falcons season and then didn’t sell a beer the whole Super Bowl game and just watched 😂. One thing I noticed at the time is that it almost seemed like the Pats defense came to the line with 2 calls. They would have their first play call but if the Rams were looking like they audibled into anything after they got to the line the defense automatically called an audible to match it even if the Rams formation didn’t change. I’ve never seen anything exactly like that and couldn’t find any commentators that mentioned it after the game. Did you see that at all on the film review and do you have an opinion on that?

This has been discussed. It was well known that Goff was reliant on McVay's calls and analysis presnap prior to the Super Bowl. But the in-helmet communication shuts off with 15 seconds on the play clock. Frequently, the Patriots would show one thing prior to 15 seconds and then audible afterward to force Goff to read the defense himself and prevent him from getting McVay's reads from the sideline.
@@j.mamana9877 Goff is a terrible QB, product of a weak QB class in 2016 and cannot even read a defense, he's actually NOT every good.
Vic Fangio was the first to use this scheme against the Rams. The Bears, Broncos and Lions all used it during the 2018 season to slow the Rams offense. The Patriots just had the better players and discipline to execute it
The Bears held the Rams to fewer yards and only gave up 3 more points and that was only because the Rams missed a FG vs the Pats.
Todd Gurley ran for 208 yards and 2 tds on the Broncos which shows how much personnel team building matters. The problem is Fangio isnt a head coach he’s a coordinator…there’s not much difference smart wise between him and Bill it’s just that Vic sucks at everything besides scheming
I’m gonna be honest man, I rewatched that Rams Bears game 2018 but I saw no 6-1 defense. It was all 2-4-5 , 3-4, and 4-3 over under odd fronts. If they did use it, I must have missed it. But they didn’t use it exclusively like Bill Billicheck

Brilliant analysis - thank you for educating us, Mr. Stephens. Bill gets the credit (fully justified) - but a big round of credit for this SB goes to Brian Flores (who deservedly got the Miami HC job), and defensive assistants. As someone stated below, the schemes are not new - few teams applied the schemes at the right place, time and personnel like the Patriots ... I think they will get back on the horse in 2021 and if Cam is as prepared and hungry as they say, a fun team to watch.
Dolphins went on to dominate them in the regular season. That game was wild..
When Flores took over the Pats defense they improved greatly. As a Pats fan I was like "Nooooo!!!" When he left.
Fatt Patricia beat him, too. But this was in 2019... Patriots spent a LOT of money in the off-season, upgrading all 3 facets of the game and they mostly did this to cover the stenc of the last 2-3 drafts so it better work or they're gnna clean house (and it WON'T be Bill who goes)
Flores may prove to be the exception but generally, Belichick assistants haven't exactly set the world on fire when they get their own gigs -----> implying the Secret Sauce is Bill himself.

McCourty's amazing play that you showed at the end saved BB's but in that game too. NOBODY was on Cooks, and McCourty had to run a country mile to break up that TD pass.
He always has a knack to find those players with a next give up attitude that or he beats that into them in camp can't figure out which
Not sure it saved BB, more likely whoever blew the coverage. I doubt the defensive plan was to allow Cook to run uncovered into the end zone.

Growing up with bill changing the nature of the team from mediocrity to dominance has been one of life's privileges as a fan. So many great games. When the guru retires by the only way he can, death. So many awards deservedly await his name.

Reminds me exactly of what happened to the Chiefs this year after the Bucs wrecked them in the superbowl. In essence, they found a perfect defensive counter for the opposing teams high powered offense, won the superbowl, and then that same defensive strategy was used against them by nearly every team the next season effectively. At least until some kind of adjustment was made. Interesting to learn about the chess side of football.
The problem with mimicking what the Bucs did to the Chiefs has two points. One, you really need to have the personnel of the Bucs, the Bucs had some horsepower on defense that year. Two, it helps for both of the Chiefs tackles to be out. While I think the Bucs just had their number that year, those tackles being took what could have been a good game into a total destruction. Mahomes and Lamar Jackson were probably the only two QB's in the league that wouldn't have been knocked out before the 4th against that kind of pressure.
the chiefs lost in the trenches. it was not because of some mastermind defense. if you cannot protect the qb you will be lucky to win in the nfl.
@@paulk5311 You don't hold the chiefs to 0 touchdowns without a strong defensive scheme. In spite of all that pressure, Mahomes was able to buy time because he is Patrick fucking Mahomes. Our coverage mattered to. There was one play that was probably the best pass effort I've ever seen. Mahomes would fully horizontal in a dive, just off the ground, and threw a downfield pass that hit his guy right in the hands. The guy dropped it. That loss was also on our ability to blanket Hill and Kelce and their remaining options not being able to produce. Besides, if you actually read what wrote, you would see how I highlighted the Chiefs tackles being out blew open the game for us,
Nah. The best example of this is Seattle in Super Bowl 48. An absolutely brilliant counter to one of the greatest offenses in NFL history, if not the best.

@aaaredskin I definitely wouldn't call him a fraud. Him and Brady complimented each other. Without each other I don’t think either of their careers are as impressive. That New England team was a shell of it’s former self and after Brady left that was the straw that broke the camels back. Brady went to an absolutely loaded bucs team so winning was inevitable. Don’t get me wrong I’m a huge Brady fan but let’s call a spade a spade here.

@@guttagutta420 This is what all the Brady media hype misses. I always felt Belichick and Brady were equally important. Great coach/GM and great QB led to the dominance. The 2019 Pats were old and not that good. The SB run was over and it was time to rebuild. That's why Belichick let Brady go so he could start over. Brady then gets to pick his team. He wanted 49ers for obvious reasons, but ended up going to a loaded Tampa team in bad need of a QB. Belichick rebuilding the Pats (esp. finding a new QB) is infinitely harder than Brady choosing a team that needs a QB. Media treats them like they're the same. If Belichick rebuilds Pats quick that will be 100 times more impressive than Brady winning in Tampa.

Great video, and I learned a lot! That said, what are some effective ways you've seen/believe Mcvay and other coaches use to combat 6-1 fronts and cover 3? Another thing that wasn't quite touched on that I've wondered is that I remember lots of outlets mentioned that Bill's defense audibled near the end of the play clock when the coach's mic cut off after Mcvay was done talking to Goff...do you recall this or this having any validity? (I rambled and made quite the run-on, I know XD)
I just commented about the same thing. I hadn’t heard any news outlets talk about that but I was at the game (worked at the stadium and essentially just watched the game and didn’t work at all as soon as I got through security gates, I’m not rich enough to buy a ticket) and it looked like the defense was calling audibles in response to offensive audibles even those the offensive formation wasn’t changing. It was as if the D was coming to the line with the call and also a call to anticipate what the offense might audible into based on the look the D was giving them.
It can be beaten by running more than one crosser, one of the basic concepts of the Erhardt-Perkins offense, which happens to be the base passing offense used by Belichick since coaching the Pats. If you've watched the Pats enough, or just looked at their team stats, you'll notice how Brady consistently relies on the slot receiver and running back as secondary options. In 2018, their top receivers were Edelman (slot) and James White (RB). In the Patriots case, having an all-time great playing tight end (Gronk) who demands double coverage helps open up the middle of the field. In the case of the 2018 Rams, neither tight ends Higbee nor Everett will draw more than single coverage in any foreseeable situation. In fact, none of the receivers on that Rams team have ever been selected to a Pro Bowl or All-Pro berth. At the very least, at least one receiver should be sufficiently dangerous to preoccupy two DBs in critical situations. The 2018 Rams are only one of two teams in league history to pass for 4500 yards, go to the Super Bowl and not have a single receiver make the Pro Bowl or All-Pro team. The other is the 2020 Buccaneers, and Mike Evans with his 13 TD receptions in his 7th consecutive 1,000 yard season (a league record) should have been honored in such a way.
I don't know that I'd say the Pats defense 'audibled' after the 15sec mark when the mic shuts off, but that is how the Bears shut down the 2018 Rams earlier in the season. (tho they were just building off what the Loins did a couple games before). They'd line up in one defense, and then rotate to another defensive look after the 15 sec mark or even as soon as the ball was snapped, forcing Goff to read the defense himself, which Goff was incapable of doing. It wasn't really an audible, as the defensive playcall wasn't changing, it was just disguised coverages.
Attack the short-intermediate middle and pressure the buzzing OLB with RBs/WRs.

Remember, the greatest show on turf. Belichick had his defense to pound the Rams over and over. Result: Rams scored only 17 points. Patriots had a couple of picks and returned one for a TD. That’s right, 13 offensive points beat the greatest show on turf.
THe Bucs held the GSOT to 9 points in the '99 NFC Championship game . . . and LOST.
Mike Martz ego lost the game for the Rams. His refusal to run Marhsall Faulk against 6 defensive backs cost the Rams the game. Belichick is the GOAT, but the Rams lost because of Martz.
It was also the second time they'd played that season. The Pats lost the first matchup 17-24 in violent game that sent five STL players off with injuries. Belichick learned and was ready for the rematch.

To get to 9 SBs in 19 years is HOF & stuff of legend. Belichick held the "Greatest Show on Turf" in check & this later version even more so. To be sure TB12 deserves a lot of credit for Pats 6-3 SB record but I didn't see him out there v Goff nor chasing Mahomes (credit to T Bowles). Belichick's D usually kept Pats in the game (only a 2nd half shutout v Atlanta), for Tommy to gut out a win (or loss).

Crazy how the Eagles torched him in Super Bowl 52. Perhaps they missed Dont’a Hightower a lot and maybe playing Malcolm Butler might have helped. Perhaps the Eagles were just that great and had plenty of different formations, plays, and personnel that Bellicheck didn’t have or Matt Patricia needed to leave to change that Patriots D for Super Bowl 53?

I wonder what happened to the Pats D in Super Bowl 52 when the Eagles beat them. Perhaps the Eagles had better personnel and ran multiple formations/styles than the Rams?
@@knight6 BB's scheme only means so much, talented players still have to execute it. The Patriots had quality DB depth in the Rams SB. Even after Chung got injured, they didn't struggle too much having to sub in Duron Harmon. The Eagles one, they were down two CBs, and ended up having old James Harrison who they had just picked up from the Steelers inactive list in Week 17 play 90% of the snaps (0 sacks or TFL in whole postseason run that year), along with players like Johnson Bademosi (6 starts in career), Marquis Flowers (3 starts in career, only played 5 more games), Eric Lee (UDFA, played only 2 years, and 15 games in his career), playing significant snaps. They got 0 sacks and also gave up 6+ YPC. They just didn't have the personnel on defense to keep up with the hot Eagles offense that was running such a quirky but simple and effective system. Brady played out of his mind to outgun the Eagles, but the Patriots defense just couldn't keep up and the Eagles defense made one play at the end to win the game. NE couldn't control the LOS. Couldn't get pressure in the run or pass game. Couldn't cover the receivers well enough. I don't think it would be very interesting for an Xs and Os breakdown, the Patriots D just couldn't keep up, just like the Eagles D couldn't keep up with the Patriots, but the Eagles did a little more. With who NE had on the field, it just wasn't meant to be that year, even if they nearly clawed their way back.
Well explained analysis of Belichick's football genius. I knew the Rams would have their work cut out for them in the Super Bowl against his football savy. Nothing can stop a high-powered offense better than a well-coached defensive scheme or a dominant, aggressive set of defensive players. In this case it was the former that prevailed.

I believe a good amount of inspiration came from how the bears handled the rams in week 14 of that year. And then we just Cemented the blueprint in the Super Bowl.

To most lay persons watching this Super Bowl they probably described it as extremely boring, and it will likely be remembered as one of the least exciting Super Bowls of all time, but this video shows exactly why the game was actually a brilliantly executed chess match by Belichick and the Pats D. It is ABSOLUTELY stunning the amount of disrespect Bill Belichick gets, especially from the Brady fans. BIll has engineered top defenses in this league for years and I bet you can't name 5 defensive players who've played for Patriots under Belichick who have gone to the Hall.
Yeah it's ugly. I think it is mostly driven by the Boston media who hates Bill because he doesn't kiss their ass. That's all most media guys care about. These same media guys would rave about Lou Gorman as a great GM even though he may be the worst GM the Sox ever had. But Gorman was so nice to the Boston media. Then all the fans who want to worship Brady as a God so they're upset he's gone, blame Bill and want to get their revenge. The Pats were certainly lucky to have Brady, maybe the clutchest QB to ever live, but the Pats are at least equally lucky to have Belichick. Without Belichick, Brady may not have had a career. No one believed in him, but Belichick drafted him, liked him so much to move him ahead of Bledsoe and keep him there even though many thought he shouldn't. Most coaches would be too afraid to do that. For many years the league looked at Brady as nothing but a game manager, but Belichick realized he was so much more.

I’m surprised Belichik’s original coaching performance, in a Super Bowl wasnt cited. Nearly 30 years prior, when DC of the Giants, he shut down one of the greatest offenses of all time by SCHEMING for them. This game plan is actually in the Hall of Fame. The early 90’s Buffalo Bills went to 4 consecutive Super Bowls with the high powered passing game and also had a Hall of Fame running back. The Giants at that time were a traditional 3-4 base defense with Hall of Fame linebackers themselves, but they were towards the end of their careers. The Giants were absolutely expected to lose that game. Belichick took them out of their base, and used TWO down lineman with NINE guys in coverage. Much like this Rams team, the Bills were a dual threat offense, and Belichick knew he could only take one threat away. He opted for the deep route passing game. The Giants kept everything in front of them sitting in a soft zone, and absolutely PUNISHED every receiver who came across their face. They squeaked out a 20-19 win on a missed 47 yard field goal by Scott Norwood, in possibly the greatest Super Bowl every played. Brutal mistake by the Giants front office in letting Belichick get away. He was slated as Parcells heir apparent, but the front office was basically intimidated by him. If Belichick stays with the Giants, we may never see the Patriots sheer dominance of TWO DECADES. The 90’s Giants may have teed off like that. But who knows. Maybe they don’t, as we know Belichick struggled a bit initially as a HC.

This was one of the best coaching performance in NFL history; then came Todd Bowles vs. Patrick Mahomes.
It was a great game plan from Bowles but it's easier to face Mahomes behind a decimated O-line.

Todd Bowles actually only called a blitz 5 times during the whole game- yes, only FIVE times. This Mahomes kids is so special though- his receivers didn't help him by missing balls when they hit their facemasks ?? Anyway- we haven't heard the last of Mahomes and KC.
Mahomes missed a ton of ops to step up as the outside edges collapsed...instead he chose to try to beat the edge rush outside (huge mistake) additionally, kc never once considered chipping, screens or quick slants....it was a game of arrogance by kc.

@@lynskyrd re watch or even watch yesterday's preseason game...mahomes trying to escape the pocket when the edge folds instead of stepping up into the pocket. When you stepup you can avoid edge pressure without taking your eye off play development. It also give your throws added velocity. Mahomes has a huge problem with this

Well done. You’ve shown what destroyed the LA Rams franchise outside of bad financial decisions and trades. Belichick imo knew a win was easy with this offense. Also Goff showed in the season that he’s scared in the pocket especially if you take away Gurley. When they played Chicago, Goff had no answers especially with Gurley not having much production. I will say tho that GOFF is the main reason the rams lost the super bowl bc he had guys wide open on those PA plays throughout the game and I completely missed them. Those were big plays that could’ve changed the outcome of the game. I will say the rams defense did their job to stop Brady and Edelman deserves MVP. GOFF was the aqua kryptonite of the RAMS since he was bad against pressure (worse than most of the guys in the league). Also my dad is a rams fan and told me that McVay has a bad habit of not adjusting in games and thinks he can win his way. He also said that Belichick would change up his defense right after they lined up to confuse GOFF. Also it’s really easy to stop the rams run game. All you gotta do is rush 6 like Chicago did (when Fangio was the DC) and you also stop Goff who is too reliant on mcvay and the run game to bail him out of situations
Its not that he's scared, he just doesn't know whats going on, the game moves very fast for him so it appears like he's scared (there probably definitely some fear there)

Very interesting video and I appreciate then marking up of the pass routes and blockers and defenders. It takes a little bit of the steam out of offensive guru if the guy can't figure out how to beat a 6-1 defense after a couple three downs and outs. To show my age, the Bears more or less played a 6-1 defense in 1985 which took him to a Super Bowl Championship. Coming back from leave in the US army, I stopped in the little restaurant on post to watch the Bears play the Miami Dolphins. Even though Dan Marino was knocked down just about every play, the ball was usually long gone and a quick slant or hitch route to beat the rush. But I noticed in this video that McVeigh doesn't split his wide receivers wide which brings two more defenders closer to the ball. One of the reasons I study mostly on KZhead videos and lectures but some reading online that the spread defense or wrote and shoot as it was called when I was younger came about was to spread defenders out so blitzes would not be as complex to figure out by the quarterback. So my question to anyone on here since I never played it down a football: should have McVey done like the 95 colts against again my bears in the Super Bowl where they had two split wide receivers and another wide receiver in the slot? I would think this would be a tough formation to play a 6-1 defense against.

Excellent vid my man!!!.. and might I add,all season, mcvay talked to Goff until the qb helmet Mic is shut off at 15 seconds left on play clock, basically telling Goff what defense he's looking at.. belichick knew this and usually had his guys stay upright and out of position to disguise their defensive look until AFTER the helmet Mic was shut off, knowing that Goff is not very good at reading defenses without mcvay telling him what he's seeing... another brilliant coaching move by BB...
I wouldn't call the disguised coverages a 'brilliant coaching move by Belicheck' considering that was done to shut down the Rams offense multiple times during the regular season (Loins first, then the Bears perfected it, and iirc 1 other team did it after the Bears). Copying someone else's answers to the test is always fair game in the NFL, but the credit would go to whoever the answers originated from. Iirc the 6-1 wasn't run against them until the superbowl, though. It's not an original concept (iirc the 6-1 was first used in the 1950's), but Bill was the first to figure out that it would shut down McVay's scheme when run correctly, and he made it happen.

This Super Bowl made me realize how much of a football nerd I was. Casual fans were giving the majority of the credit to Brady when I was mostly fascinated with the defensive schemes. That Super Bowl MVP should have went to the whole defense.
The 2018 Patriots imo was the most impressive moment of Belichicks career. Unlike the early SB wins, he didn’t do it with an elite defense. The previous 2 SB wins were more led by Brady and the offense. Belichick scheme was just brilliant.
I would disagree. Belichick's defense also sealed the win in the Atlanta falcons Super Bowl. They only allowed one score in the 2nd half. They effectively shut down the Falcons' #1 offense in the 2nd half. The reason the Pats were in the hole in the first place was because of Brady's pick-6 and poor play in the first half. The defense was doing very well.
@@gracialonignasiver6302 well they didn’t seal it since the offense drove down the field for the win but I get your point. And Brady I don’t think was bad. They had a fumble by Blount, - number of drops, oline didn’t play great, Brady had some bad passes. But ultimately the offense torched Atlanta.
