  • I've always noted that BB doesn't really do blitzing defences, he builds containment and smothering defenses that remove options and restrict the opponent. I find BB leans on conservative elements in his coaching. He prefers solidity and consistency. Where possible, he's put solid corners and safeties in to match the up front defense. And that up front containment and consistency IMHO plays a big part in the number of turnovers and interceptions. Do you take sacks or turnovers if given the choice? In doing this - he still finds the innovation in the form to come up with novel aspects. So for example, how the really wrecked the Rams offense in the last superbowl between the two teams.

  • Belichick always felt the defense was aligned so you can react and not do. Because if you do and the other team has a defense against it then it no longer is useful. Belichick knew also that tackling in the 2nd level prevented unneeded yards. Elusive players given the ball in zones can add 60-80 yards a game. Containment is another form of positioning so you have time to make a decision on the ball or opponent. things like blitzing are high risk high opportunity as well as over pass rushing gaps so Belly will only use it if a player knows his reaction will result in a positive play or knows the offense won't be prepared for the scheme. Lot of those plays he allow players to decide vs making them part of the scheme, which is why delayed blitzing is so popular with his defenses the Las few years . It employs ability for an extra guy to move QB , to force QB to think , and to push a moving player into a zone where it's possible a pass wouldve been made , so QB has to be careful of throwing in that direction as well as the attacking player themselves.

  • Belichick understood early on, what actually works in the heat of battle. It doesn't really matter if a DB runs 4.3, if he can't tackle. (except for Deon Sanders) :-) It doesn't matter if a safety is the best athlete on the field, if he doesn't have a nose for the football. …….same for the middle linebacker.

  • The 2023 BB Philosophy is to dominate the line of scrimmage and not allow the run, and then have a bunch of smart DBs who work well together to trick and confuse quarterbacks, after that you study tendencies of opposing offenses and take out their biggest threats by focusing on them more. If teams are going to beat you, they are going to have to do it creatively all the way down the field. Don't get beat on the deep ball and shut down the run game, as the red zone get closer the field gets smaller. The longer the game goes on the easier it is to identify how they want to play you and bait them into making mistakes or having a big impact play off of a vulnerability. As Belichick sees it, you don't have to throw if you can run and the run opens up the throw. Take what the defense gives you and above all, don't give up the ball.

DJ can u make some annual rounds to my favorite podcast like Big Blue Kickoff ( Giants) Journey to the Draft ( Eagles) choose those cause u make ur draft stops to these shows. Does not need to be an hour full show ur view points on there games or how the organization run things cause ur network is strong with respected scouts & coaches. Love Move the sticks podcast too.

    • No I think what Bill Belichick means by symmetry is that players stay in their respective zones, man assignments, gap assignments in the run game or gap assignments when blitzing. Essentially, players need to have an understanding of what the defensive play looks like, and they need to know how to maintain that shell throughout the play. For example, safety’s cannot bite and break their zone on 3 deep or 2 deep, or run defenders maintaining their gap and shifting over as a reaction to a zone run concept

    • @@jimstevenson424 I hear you but he hasn’t really proved much since Brady has left in developing a qb or anything for that matter. Maybe when you decline a bit it’s best to take a lesser but more fitting role such as a defensive coordinator?

      @Eli-gf2qf@Eli-gf2qfАй бұрын
    • @@Eli-gf2qf He should coach Navy. He was building something with Mac until Josh left with a chunk of his staff. People used to say Parcells never won anything without BB, but it takes a staff and team. To claim BB wasn't more important than Brady shows a lack of history. Erhardt-Perkins was taught to Brady, who relied on a strong running game until 2007, which started phase II of the dynasty (the one people are most familiar with). Brady struggled in Tampa at first, migrating to Coryell but adjusted. BB's system requires more control, because it is so different (player selection and game management), which is one reason why his assistants fail. It was in development since the early 70s in New England. There is a reason why BB wanted the Patriots job.
