LS SWAPPED UNIMOG 404... IS IT THE FASTEST UNIMOG?!

2023 ж. 9 Қар.
29 659 Рет қаралды

We revisit our 6L LS swapped Unimog project and remember why it was put on hold 😬
After pulling it from the weeds and topping up the fuel we got it fired back up again. We'll show you how it was lifted, how everything fits and most importantly how fast it goes 🚛💨 Not without any issues resurfacing!
We love this project and want to do more with it! We think it's the fastest Unimog 404!
Let us know in the comments what you think and if you have any cool ideas?!

  • very cool, im restomodding a 404 myself. ive gone with a m130 engine, that is what they would put in in 1970, will have about 140hp, gearbox is modified to 8 speed and i found michelin xml 395 85 20 tires that i mounted on 11x20 rims, they are about 47 inches tall. thing is still in parts exept for the engine, that is fullly rebuild and ready to go.

  • The only thing to do with a 404 is put big wheels on 😁. The reason there’s only a torque tube is for the chassis flex that’s designed into the chassis so go steady with your parallel links, could twist them off 😆. Dunno if you know but you shouldn’t drill or weld the chassis for the same reason. My 406 used to do 60mph (65mph with wind behind) my mate 417 does about 70+🤣 and not a fun ride

    @casto-@casto-5 ай бұрын
    • That might be true where you're from but in Canada it is very common practice to drill and weld frames. There's even guidelines for it.

      @jerrodklettke3764@jerrodklettke37645 ай бұрын
    • @@jerrodklettke3764 that’s from Mercedes. Unimog chassis aren’t a standard chassis, they are built to flex (if I remember right there’s 18-24 inch on a 406 chassis before the spring compress) drilling and welding can give a stress point leading to chassis failure. Standard chassis you can do what you like, it doesn’t really matter

      @casto-@casto-5 ай бұрын
    • @@casto- every old poorly built truck frame flexes, what makes the unimog unique is the body is designed to move with the flexing frame. It's outdated technology that isn't special.

      @jerrodklettke3764@jerrodklettke37645 ай бұрын
    • @@jerrodklettke3764 yeah they will all flex but they won’t go as far as a unimog, return to start and then do it thousands of times over without destroying them selfs. The body and cab are mounted on 3 points to allow the chassis to flex. The cab and body them selfs shouldn’t/don’t flex. The reason no one else use flexible chassis is it’s expensive to build, far cheaper putting long travel socks, dislocating spring’s for the same flex. Unimog have been in production for over 75 yrs now lol

  • When you showed the clip of you shifting the old transmission: Having to use a lot of force when going from 2nd to 3rd is normal and takes a bit of getting used to, to do it right. Because you are not actually shifting from 2nd to 3rd. You are shifting back to 1st, but also changing the range, because it's basically a four speed main gearbox. Furthermore there is a lock, where you must shift into fourth first to unlock 5th and 6th and resets when you go back into the first and second range. Usually Mercedes recommended to start in 3rd and only use the lower gears for heavy loads or offroading. With all that out of the way: it's still an old gearbox and especially a truck gearbox that needs it's time to get warm to remotely shift "good". A small tip: I don't know how you did the engine mounts. Mercedes usually also did them as more or less a triangle. The gearbox was fixed in the rear and the engine to it and once in the front. That meant the cab has to be able to flex around it. So maybe check if you twist your frame fully you still got clearance. An easy fix could be to just lift up the cab a bit. Also gives you more tire clearance.

    • We daily drove the Swiss mog for over a year, we learned how to shift the transmission quite well. Typically we do start in 3rd but for the purpose of the video Jerrod wanted to show all the gears.

  • i drove a Unimog with a Ruthmann Steiger hydraulic cargo box. no rear drive, but it could set the cargo box on the ground and leave it behind. Or pick it up and lift it quite high, higher than a regular truck would be. top speed 60km/h. never found the shifting difficult once i got into the habit of double clutching for every shift. the synchros are weak. I used to do last mile delivery from Rail. LOTs of shifting. upwards of 40 stops. all in town. 1st through 6th every time. strong legs ;)

Believe me we tried....also the gearbox will start to give you probs. I had a 406 mog with the 6 cyl 130 hp engine ...strong as hell but way to slow, even with 105 cm tyers , they are build like tractors but not for high speed driving
