This tutorial is amazing. I ' ve been a Canon shooter for 15 years who just bought a new A9 and your detailed explanation is making my learning curve much easier than reading the huge manual. Thanks
I was searching where is this camera reviewer across KZhead. And now I finally found you back. Hard work pays off. It brings people back to you. Enough said. :)
Subscribed.
Michael, you do an outstanding job. Your video tutorials gets us viewers up to speed so much faster on how to set and operate the A9. I am a Canon user and made the switch to the A9, so I have a very good understanding of Canon's settings, but with that said, your video cuts down the amount of time I needed to gain the needed knowledge on all of the menu settings and functions. This is the second tutorial that I've watched of yours (the Canon 7DMK2 was the first). I'm blown away at how well your classes are put together. You spend a lot of time on these, and I for one appreciate it. I purchased the 7DMK2 video a few years ago and today I am purchasing the A9 video as well. Thanks so much for all of the work you put into these videos. Keep up the great work, we're all watching!! Kind Regards~ Rick
Rick Brewer thank you Rick for your kind words and support and congratulations on an amazing camera!!
Great job on this tutorial! Your method of teaching with your video affects and camera view makes it very easy to understand. Keep up the great work and thanks for taking the time to do this!
Your tutorial is one of the best! Others gets my confused. Yours however, actually make sense. Thank you!
the best of the all tutorials!
Just got my a9, this video was a huge help. Thanks. You did go over how to use or program the 1, 2, 3 mode dial
Love your style of teaching Michael and appreciate all of the hard work you put in for these training videos, like always great work :)
+Michael Mystro Pierce thank you Michael! More coming!
Thank you for this. Really Helped me get up and going.
Best A9 tutorial and well detailed.. by anyone!
This is great work Michael. You are a good teacher.
Very useful Michael, thank you!
This is awesome! I've gone from the Sony A55 to the A77 and now to the A9! This is very helpful on some of the awesome features!
Great Tutorial. Thanks for making that available!!!
...great video mate...best training video i have seen on the Sony a9...
Thanks for the tutorial, it helped immensely!
Thank you so much for your tutorial, Michael.
Amazing camera loving the A9 so far epically for low light capabilities.
Just got the A9II. You're a LIFE SAVER! Thanks!
Thank you! This helped me a lot!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Im only 13min into the video and I already learned a bunch. Very well explained detailed video, please post more about every other function that this genius camera has to provide please.!
I have had this camera for a couple of years and never got the quality I expected. It was hit and miss. Watched this video and saw an immediate improvement because i understood the camera. THANK YOU
I actually sat and read the manual. I was amazed at how much Sony knows about their own product.
You do a good job of explaining camera functions. I wonder how many people are learning these things on an A9, though... not the sort of video I was expecting when I clicked through.
Thanks so much. The best and useful video I ever seen in KZhead about. I have the Sony a9 for a few weeks and now you gave me the best lesson how to use it. I am so grateful and looking for more videos. Thanks again and wish you all the best.
Shmulik Froind thank you! Be sure to check out my Sony A9 Course when it us ready. Best wishes
Michael … You are a LEGEND , thank you so much for making that OUSTANDING Video for us … God Bless You always for your Kindness and Sharing with others you Expertise … im a great follower or Yours
Excellent Training Video !!!
Great Quick course . Most appreciated and thank you big time
Good Job. Thanks for the Tutorial
I have an A9ii. I learned a lot from this video!! Thank you!!!
Awesome Work ✌️
Top tutorial, as always. I can't imagine the Sony A9 being a 'first camera' for anyone, though. It would be learning to drive in a Ferrari or Lamborghini.
It certainly doesn't seem to be straightforward, but many wealthy individuals often decide to start shooting, they walk into the store and say "give me the best". Ive seen this happen continually over the years.
I need to say that I have just purchased my Sony A9 with a Sony 70-200 f/2.8 GM OSS. And this is like my first camera. I had a Nikon D7000 in 2010 for about 3 or 4 weeks. Then I sold it =) Now 8 years later I buy this camera =) So I'm a total newbie and I will learn everything with my new "Ferrari".. And what will I shoot... well mostly ice hockey..
@@notlim1983 My first too !!
Great review just ordered your crash course also :-)
Brilliant. I never realised how little I knew about this amazing camera.
Masterful teaching skills - only someone who has hands-on experiential knowledge can teach us how Sony A9 works. Without this tutorial, I would have returned this complex camera.
Great tutorial!!
Incredible video.
Thank You Michael. Job Well Done :)
I appreciate just how much work goes into a video like this, so thank you! As I’ve just bought my A9, the first thing I did was to upgrade the firmware to 5.0. The menu system is very different.... will you be doing a new one of these for the version 5.0?
Thanks coming from Canon is a big jump and u helped a lot
I just purchased the A9 as and a 200-600 Sony I have also the 24 to 70 2.8 this video was very good I give you a 10+ I'm a retired Navy Photographer from 1971 to 75 I was honored to be on the USS TICONDEROGA the recovery ship for Apollo 16-17 the last moon missions. I've always shot Canon but since I now have 3 Sony I'm Sonified.
Great tutorial. Thanks
awesome video THANKS!!!
I traded in all of Nikon gear in exchange for all new Sony and this video was great! I watched the whole thing while taking notes.
Michael The Maven is The Best!!!
+ONE ZEINZ if you say so! :)
This is damn good! I like the file quality of these A cameras but the menus and settings look intimidating! Thank you soooo much for breaking this down. I might pick up 1 or 2 for wedding work!!
Vanessa Clifton I’ve just got an A9 after about 25 years with Canon. First thing I did was upgrade the firmware to version 5.0 and the menus are absolutely fine! I found them really quite intuitive as like you, I didn’t have high hopes. It’s certainly nothing to hold back on. The first batch of images into Lightroom..... so glad I switched!
This has been an absolute gem of an introduction into the A 9. This is my first DSLR and your tutorial has helped me navigate through the basic functions so that I am now able to go out into the field and practise with confidence. Well done for a very clear and concise tutorial. Your accessory recommendations are also very helpful.
Lots of great information. Thanks. Re bumping up ISO, wouldn't it be better to say that this increases signal amplification?
Michael I just subscribed and have to say I love how you do camera reviews and show the methods of your testing, wonderful work!!
+Longrider thank you my friend- I appreciate it very much
Awesome thanks Michael
My pleasure! :)
Thanks!
One of those times when you like a video before you watch it! Trust your insights on the cameras and lenses Michael The Maven! :-)
+Sid Phadnis thank you Sid! Much appreciated
Thx a lot. Also useful for A7 III User. ;-)
Thank you for this great tutorial. I‘ll switch from Canon to Sony in a couple of months. One question, can you use exposure compensation in manual mode with auto-iso = on with this camera?
Awesome video. Thanks . Was hoping for more information on high frame rate shooting. H M L , when I shoot at high frame rates I loose sharpness. Why ?
Like for the work and effort. Haven't finished yet, but thank you. Coming from a canon 7dmkii and an a6000. This is helpful.
+jasonlax so glad to hear it Jason!
great video Michael, I'm new to sony when I'm recording with my canon i see the videos when i put in my SD card, when i record on the Sony i can't find them, do you have a video on this
Cool video nice job
Please tell Michael how many changes are involved with this tutorial since the upgrade recently .
As always, TOP NOTCH. Does anyone know it there exist any videos on how to set up the A9II? Desperate to find something, from someone that has experience.
Thanks for the great video i have a question about white balance. I film in very low tungsten lighting 2200k the camera will only go to 2500k if i use the colour balance grid can that be translated into colour temperature. so what would i set for say 2000k thanks for your help Barry.
Thank u😊
Was hoping for your a7rIII crash course to come out soon, but this will get me by until then since a lot of the info is the same between the two cameras! DO you have an ETA or should I buy the entire a9 crash course for now for the a7riii? Thank you so much! You were of great help to me 2 yrs ago with the canon 7d2 crash course when I bought my first canon, now I moved onto Sony! ;-)
Nice, juist bought one
I switched from a canon 70D to the sony a9. Huge upgrade right there.
I'm literally about to do the same thing, I kept looking at the 80'd then the GH5/sonya7ii range.. but I dont want multiple cameras for different things.. just one beast.. how have you found it so far?
So do you recommend it or not?
great video 👏👏
+Reben Yasen thank you
How well will this tutorial cover what I need to know for the A9II, or will there be one coming out for it? I am so impressed by your style of teaching. Thank you, for all of your hard work!
Thank you! It should be mostly the same with a few subtle differences
while in manual mode you can half press shutter button then hold AEL button to activate eye detection! :)
thank you so much... does the crash course have more information compared to the free youtube?
Question, did you try the play memories app with android? I had noticed that it seems to work better on android devices than in apple. Haven't tried in a while but will again.
hai michael just curious whats the point of having option for aps-c and super 35? for sure we want to set it off all the time and having the best quality from the full frame right?
Did you learn how to use the proper mode for focusing? One of the best videos out there. Can you use exposure comp. in auto iso?
Hi Martin- Here is a focusing mode guide from Sony on the A9, thought you might enjoy it: support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/www/support/ilc/focus/en/a9/settings/index.html
Focusing mode guide did not work for you, Michael. I think it's flawed. My success rate is very nearly 100% for wildlife and sport. I have tested new Sony cameras before they went into production, and before the manuals were available. If you are not getting nearly 100% focusing rate, you need to find something that works for you? I will not dwell on it. I watch all of this video and because it is mostly very good I have shared it with my Photography tutorials ( nearly 4,000 subscribers ) Facebook group, and my A9 owners group which I set up over 3 months ago when I first received the A9. You are doing an great job, with your tuition, and I wish you lots of success in the future.
Alan WIllis - I have been trying to shoot birds in flight using A9 with Sony 100-400 lens. I'm not having much luck with finding a focus mode. Would you be kind enough to post some settings you have tried and recommend. I'm getting results from birds and wildlife sitting still but not with flying birds. I would be grateful for any advice
A tough bird to capture in flight is the kingfisher. I use shutter speed, 3200 or 2500, F5, iso auto from 100- 3200. lock on AF wide, or lock on local expanded. I use the A9 with the 70-200 plus 1.4 converter. hardly ever miss. If you can keep the bird in the viewfinder it will be pin sharp. takes some practice.
Looks like Alan Willis provided a reply my settings are similar. However my complete setup is AF-C, Wide Focus Area, Shutter at 1/1600 - 1/2000, AutoISO set to 100-5000. I use an LA-EA3 adapted Tamron A-mount150-600mm at f7.1 and get some really great shots. I shoot free hand no tripod all the time this way.
can you tap focus with the phone app?
Does anyone know how to enable touch-to-focus in photo mode? I could only figure out how to enable it in video recording mode.
hi I am a beginner photographer and videographer, do you have any recommendations on a budget flash? also my autofocus touch screen doesn't seem to work is there a setting is there a setting that maybe off? I have a screen protector on the lcd screen ,could that be it? thank you in advance
if you could only have one camera for birds in flight would you have the D500 with 200-500 or this camera with the new sony 200-600? I have the D500 and considering switching if the A9 is dramatically better
Chapters would be great still a 10/10
Great work, great teaching style. i am canon user and i do lot of food photography other time when i m free landscapes, want to invest in sony camera but i heard that sony colors tend to be different and will have hard time processing in lightroom is this true in any way?
+Yasith siri thank you! In the past they tended to lean a little bit orange but the A9 is the best that I've seen from a Sony camera. Very very close to Canon
thank you this helps. tc
Hi Michael. Is the camera overheating while recording video. Please do a video overheating test if possible.
+sahilatre I havent seen it yet
Hello Michael !! 3 months ago I bought my A9 with the 24-70 f2.8 GM and here comes the problem: It continually leaves me abandoned in the middle of work because it stops focusing and on the screen it appears: F - -. I got tired of taking it out and putting it back on but I not only lose important moments of registering but I run the risk of it falling to the ground. I also use the Sony 70-200 2.8 GM and the Sony Zeiss 16-35 f / 4 and no problem with them. I hope you help me please. God save you!
What're your opinions on the A9 video capabilities? Not sure I f I should jump to the a9, or go with a7sii, a7rii, or even the gh5 (only concern here is low light and less shallow depth of field). I'm also wondering if there is a a7siii or a9s coming out soon that I should wait on. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
Not an easy to answer question but Ill try. I use a GH5 for video daily, but as you mention, low light is its achilles heel. The A9 is amazing at higher ISOs, and we also get a FF readout without binning. Its never been done before. Face detection and tracking are excellent. I guess my question for you would be, what do you shoot? Smaller sensors are actually ok in my book for video, here is why: kzhead.info/sun/o9mNZaV7jXV8dpE/bejne.html
Dang, just watched your video and never thought about that before. You made a lot of great points, love your reviews - super informative. I shoot alot of video - weddings (concern for low light at the receptions), branding videos companies, but also do some photography work and wouldn't mind exploring that avenue more in the future. I guess I'm just trying to figure out which will be the best of both worlds (photo & video) - gh5 looks incredible for video but again lowlight is concerning, and missing out on depth of field/ff quality on the photography end. And theres also the thought of if I go sony, it will be an easy transition into the a9s or a7siii whenever they come out. A concern on the a9 end is lack of picture profiles and less cumbersome video features. Upgrading is always a tough decision - if you have any further recommendations I’d love to hear them! Thanks for the help!
Hey Michael, I appreciate this is an old video, however, could you please help me with a frustrating aspect I am having with video please on my A9 I can't seem to find the best settings to use for dogs running at me whilst in video. The focus is never that great on the face. If it were you, what would the exact settings be that you would use? I use the sony 135 GM for video as it has outstanding AF performance. I am really struggling to nail focus on fast moving subjects in video though, even running across the scene I am struggling. I will get the A7c as it has eye af in video which I assume will be a great help for me as a second body. Thank you
Hi ! I can't the AF Illuminator of Sony flash hvl-60M works in my Sony A9. Could you help me, please ??? Thanx !!!
Actually registering faces allows you to set focus priority on the registered faces. If you are shooting a birthday party then register the birthday boy/girl and parents so when any of them is in the shot it will focus on them instead of someone not as important to the party.
Is it just me or you missed the Lock-on AF, possibly one the best options in many sports? Last options in the AF menu
Armando Tura there are literally hundreds of features on the A9 not covered in this video. I demonstrate the lock-on AF on the real world shooting on the full crash course.
Does it shoot slow mo
No mention about the recall memory feature?
+jonneymendoza I systematically cover deep menu system on the Crash Course. Tons of info on there, that section alone is 80 minutes long
Michael The Maven where can I view that?
jonneymendoza It's part of the paid course, see link in description. We are about 1-2 weeks out from publishing it, but there is a notification list on my blog so I can email you when it's ready. The course covers real world shooting situations, video, strobes, menus, recommended gear, tips & techniques. Thanks!
Do you know why my touch screen would not be working? I just got my a9 this week and the touch screen has been non responsive the entire time. Do I have to activate it?
did you figure this out? Im the same
Even using a tripod and remote, I cannot get a tack sharp picture with my a9 (Tamron 70-180 f2.8 or Sony 35 mm f1.8 at any zoom or fstop) anybody have any suggestions? {exposure seems fine, of course I hit and miss depending on the scene}
at 19:44 you show a screen on your camera that I don't have on mine. I go from the full black screen with all the information to the image with the histogram in the bottom right and info on the bottom of the screen only. That page you show never shows up on mine. Why not? BTW I have update 4.1 installed.
Did you cycle thru the display button?
Auto mode is also for a moment when you have zero time to make changes to the settings. If a meteor came down, I would use auto.
I always set mine to Auto when handing it to someone else to take the picture.
=D
The major drawbacks of the Sony A9 that many beginners and amateurs DO NOT: 1. Eats battery like no tomorrow, forcing you to add the brick grip. Now, not light at all 2. WiFi/NFC are really bad 4. Sony Remote Camera Control WILL NOT work when needing live-view 5. Beginners/amateurs like to get into 4K will surly be disappointed FYI: Sony will soon phase out the A-Mount just like Olympus has done to 4/3. Sony & Nikon will phase out their speedlites because ATG/Godox, ATG/Nissin & ATG/Jinbei are in town. ATG has put the 75 years old company, Bowens, into the history books. Now, two companies are trying to make 320ws monolights that CAN NOT do HSS, just to make end meets. One AC monolight is an insect while the other AC is a rodent skunk.
Michael great video. Great help with the Sony A 9.
