Even with a grip the Sony is more manageable. Quiet. Silent shutter on the Sony vs that flapping mirror on 5D4. IBIS. Those are the first things you notice. As you use it more, you realise the Sony files require less post than the Canon files (at least for me they do YMMV) for some of the jobs I was shooting I was able to deliver jpg SOOC, I'd never been able to do that with the 5D4. It was expensive for me to move as I changed all the glass as well, but the increase up in keepers, ease of use and less post for some jobs has meant it was worth it. All the talk of complicated Sony menus etc is BS, I always found the Canon menus terrible. Hope this helps.

  • Again a very nice video Wes! * Regarding DR and ISO, over 800 ISO which is were the A9 becomes ISO invariable (it isn't under that, source DPReview ) I can't tell DR and noise apart from them over 800 ISO. But I can tell at base ISO on DR, the highlights clips easier on the A9. * Regarding EFCS, e-shutter and full mech shutter and bokeh: it is the combination that give problems. So full mech or full e-shutter works fine, but not EFCS which is electronic first curtain with mech second curtain. The reason is the distance difference. The e-shutter "travels" on the sensor plane exactly and the mech a few millimeter in front of it. With shallow DOF, this creates an angle problem for the light rays. Full explanation, also with some illustrations, was given a few years ago in the DPR Sony FF forum. * Regarding HSS banding and flash with EFCS on, it seems to not happen with Sony flashes like the HVL-F45/60RM, but can happen at times on the 3d party flashes, like Godox. * Banding in artificial light with the A7III and other slow read out e-shutters, use the same shutter speed or max the double as the electric grid frequency has so 1/60 (or max 1/120) in the US and 1/50 (or max 1/100) here in Europe. * If you have problems with AF-C and small apertures (high numbers), especially in low light, then go over to AF-S. It focuses with most (but not all) lenses near wide open in AF-S. This principle goes for most Sony bodys (but not all). * We still lack the Aperture Drive in AF / Focus Priority Mode (forces AF to run almost wide open also on small apertures) to work with all lenses. The A7RIV seems near that. The A9 has the menu, but it only works with a few selected lenses and only in e-shutter mode (so not with flash), and the A7III (and A7RIII) doesn't have the Focus Priority Mode. Sony is really good with autofocus in general, but this part they really made a mess with.

  • Really good comparison video Wes, the best I have seen. I switched from Nikon D810 based system to an A9 just as the v5.0 firmware came out. I was honestly shocked at the A9's AF-C and tracking and still am. I did miss a second body and on occasion, the higher res of the D810. So, I purchased a hardly used A7Rii for under £1k. The AF is not in the same league obviously, only one SD card slot and I do need to carry a pocketful of spare batteries. But, I enjoy the extra res for studio and landscape work. At some point I will exchange the A7Rii for a used A7Riii or A7Riv when they hit the 2nd hand market. I cannot see me selling the A9 in the foreseeable future. It is the camera I pick up when I just have to get the shot. Keep up the good work Wes and thanks.

  • Thank you for the video, I’m a subscriber, and do enjoy your way of sharing information. I’m on the fence for the A9 or A9II, I own the a7iii (first camera I’ve ever purchased) plus some lenses. Im not a professional, I shoot my boys soccer games, speedball paintball, portraits, family travel, street, events for friends, I’m just enjoying the hobby. I do wish the A7III had a stickier AF, your comment about AF and aperture convinced me that the path is to an A9 or A9II, just don’t know which one. The A7RIV with the file size in RAW would require a significant investment in editing hardware for me, not going there. Do you think Sony can deliver the medium raw option through firmware? That would make the A7RIV really appealing to a wider range of photographers. Thank you!

    @David141071@David1410714 жыл бұрын
    • I wouldn’t only say go with the a9ii if you would need mechanical shutter (mostly flash) for a lot of your stuff. And there’s no reason to believe that they’ll be producing a medium raw option, unfortunately. That usually has to be baked into the image processor chip from the get go, as the processing overhead would make it too difficult to accomplish through general purpose processing.

  • Hi Wes, Good review. Am selling my A73 in exchange for the A9 because I need fast action stills so this breakdown video comparison was really helpful. The A73 is an all-rounder hybrid camera but it doesn’t excel at either stills or video with newer tech and bodies out there in 2020, while the stills AND af of A9 still is on top and excels. And although the A92 fixes all the shortcomings of the A9, the price difference makes it a harder decision to upgrade especially since the video specs didn’t improve. As for video, the R5 looks promising on paper but let’s see in real world use. FYI, the A9 prices have dropped significantly and I was lucky enough to pick one up for the price of A7r3 almost new. Lastly, I have the EOSR to see if it is as good as it says with the claimed color science and af speed. And putting it against the A73, I can say the following: EOSR af is fast but not as intelligent as the A73 when it comes to eye af and tracking. And for colors, it’s more of preference than science as I think Canon does a better job with white balance (especially in auto) than Sony. There are other features and tradeoffs in both but as you mentioned several times, all are good and it comes down to what you need and/or use, what you can afford, and if you’re a paid professional, it comes with the territory. For non-paid professionals, then decision process has other factors to consider. Love to hear what you do for the video side or what lenses are your go too!

    @nomad0714@nomad07144 жыл бұрын
    • Agreed. And also that the R5 exists only on paper right now. People get really put off when you tell them that. Haha I just use straight non-slog profile for shooting video for youtube, as I don’t have a lot of time to devote to it. Contrast -2, Sat -2, Sharp +2, then balance in post. Lenses are usually Zeiss 35 1.4 (not very sharp for photo, but sharp enough for video) and either the Sony 85 1.4 or Viltrox 85 1.8.

      @WesPerry@WesPerry4 жыл бұрын
    • Hi Wes Perry, Awesome! Thanks for sharing the lens and video settings. Have you tried the Sigma MC-11 with EF lenses. I hear they work well and shoot 20fps in single mode and 10fps in continuous. And since I’ve only been a hybrid shooter for about a year part time, I don’t get brand struck/loyal but rather loyal to the tools that allows me to perform my best, which you have the creative, the exposure controls, and the gear. It’s good times where the competition will drive new and better tech as well as drive prices down or at least be more competitive. R5 comes out then Sony hopefully comes out with the A7s3 or A74 or whatever next improvements. This is good for all of us!

      @nomad0714@nomad07144 жыл бұрын

I find the noise is a little more organic than the noise in the a7iii, though. That being said, it turns to mush much sooner than the a7iii does. It’s just a fact of life when the sensor has ram and processing glued to the back of it. More heat and EMI to raise the noise floor of the sensor.

However, I stopped doing hdr for real estate when I got the a7iii, because I found the dynamic range so good. I thought the A7R3 was just a "better" version of the A7iii but came to learn that wasn't the case, the A7iii is actually superior for action and AF. Sometimes the more expensive camera isn't always better., in addition the A7iii and A7R3 both have better IQ in my opinion than the A9 does, must better ability to recover shadows without getting a noisy murky look.

    • The AF of the A73 is the same as the A7R3 the only difference it has more sensor coverage so you claim of it being better for action is pure nonsense based on the horrible and often repeated mistake that it shares the same AF as the A9. Not even close! The only thing where the A73 has an upper hand is on high iso for video. Everything else the R3 is the better camera.

I think it is because of the older sensor in it. And I am not just talking about the spread of AF points, but actual continuous AF speed and reliability. Of, course any of the Third Gen FF bodies crush Gen 1 and 2 in AF performance. I can tell you that the AF performance of the A7RIV is better than the A7III and almost as good as the A9 (probably 85-90%), and it has the Real Time Tracking.

  • One thing that the 7 series has that the A9 does not, is the ability to set the auto-iso to SPECIFIC numbers. I typically set my auto iso for night time / dark sports to a max of 6400, but would do 8000 if I could. However, in auto iso, you can only do this in doubles, so it would jump from 6400 to 12800. The 7III and 7R IV both allow for each increment. BOTH cameras don't allow for specific auto minimum shutter speeds and only allow 1-2-4-8-16 etc, which again is really dumb. Wish Sony would fix this since it's so easy to do so.

The user interface is only very slightly different, and those differences can be grouped in with the autofocus section, as that’s what they really concern. • The A9 AF is FAR superior to the A73 so your statement about how close they are is just absurd. This is simple, the A73 has a slight advantage in high iso and is clearly a better video camera. EVERYTHING else, the A9 is by far the best camera of the two. Much nicer EVF, LCD, much bigger buffer and faster FPS (electronic). MUCH faster readout speeds so you can actually use silent shooting without rolling shutter issues which also means, you do not have to use EFCS for faster shooting which when in use leads to rendering bokeh issues at faster shutter speeds. Also, it goes to 1/32000 shutter instead of 1/8000. Extra dials also are welcome. And what about no blackout... Eye AF that is FAR beyond any other camera from Sony or any other manufacturer ..same for AF tracking...a WHOLE new league. Plus you can select Left or Right eye. Funny that every plus of the A9 you downplay then exaggerate the pluses of the A73.

    • I actually prefer the a9 to the a7iii for video, as I’m not fond of using log profiles (not useful for my work), and the a9 has much less rolling shutter than the a7iii in video. We can’t agree on everything ;)

  • Great video but really annoying background music.

  • A7iii feels like a far better camera for my kind of work. Landscapes, parties, portraits and events. I pretty much never used the burst mode lol

  • The recently leaked allegedly leaked A7MIV specs seem as if no upgrade was made....pretty disappointing....maybe I'll save for a A9II for my 2nd sony buy

    • I hadn’t seen anything about that yet. I assume it would at least get the new body and real time AF. As long as they keep the price down that’s really all they need to hold off the competition (I’m not saying I’m not hoping for more...)

  • I couldn't get past 1 minute because of your 60 fps. It just makes me dizzy. Why not just shoot in 24fps?

    • 24p is disgusting and belongs nowhere but in the cinema. I similarly have great difficultly watching the choppy mess that is 24p youtube videos. Just hot garbage with the 3-2 pull down to match computer displays. 30p is acceptable, but still needlessly jumpy. When youtube accepts it, I’ll be happily moving to 120p. It doesn’t work for fiction, but it does for real life.

    • Víctor Aguilar don’t worry, you’ll come around eventually. Just might take a few years 😂 (24p is going to look even sillier once everyone is accustomed to the smoothness of 120Hz+ displays.)
