My First Wedding with the Sony A9- No Overheating, No Warnings, Just an Amazing Camera
Join award winning wedding photographer Jason Lanier for his first wedding at Taber Ranch in Northern California where he used the Sony A9 for the first time in what he believes to be the first wedding in the world shot with the new camera. PLEASE THUMBS UP, SHARE, LEAVE A COMMENT AND SUBSCRIBE!
PLEASE NOTE: This wedding was shot on May 19, 2017.
This wedding was part of a REAL Wedding Workshop where Jason brings students to learn and shoot at a real wedding. In this video Jason uses the 70-200 G Master, 16-35 Sony Zeiss, 35mm Sony Zeiss lenses.
Please note that Jason experienced no overheating or overheating warnings from the camera despite it being a very hot day (over 90 degrees) and they were in direct sunlight for hours.
We thank you for watching and invite you to stick around and watch a few more while you're here....
Thanks!
Jason Lanier Photography
1 guy has reported his a9 overheating and the internet goes mad. 1 guy (jl) does a shoot and his doesn't overheat and the world calls him a liar. The internet is a fickle little world
Go watch Amar's video and maybe you'll understand...
nitrowad I watch Amar the hater videos and he is full of crap, nothing he says is real so you really referenced the wrong person. He says i like Sony and i want Sony to make it, i almost bought the A9 but not anymore lol but laughing and always saying bad stuff about Sony and Jason, he's a hater for real, he says i want Sony to make it, I have Sony cameras lmbo he has Canon and you will always see him popping it up to say this is better, this is a real camera lmbo and then the truth comes out as he bashes Sony and Jason for supporting Sony. That guy is scandalous and low class.
@Michael he had some good points about the video, since this video's title is about overheating, and how it's not happening, but actually isn't a real test where we can see that it's not overheating but patched up video of the event, which btw. seems weird - who in the world would like a photographer to teach other photographer how to shoot... ON THEIR WEDDING??? Are you kidding me? If this ain't stage, then I feel sorry for the newlywed couple... Anyways, all people are discussing issues that Sony admitted (we still don't know the scale of the issue - how much cameras has been hit by it), but the problem is that there are a lot of fanboys that take things personal. I shoot Canon, Fuji, Samsung. I tried Nikon and Sony - didn't like them. I'm not saying they are bad, just didn't like them, but people have to be open minded for critique (whether it's a subjective or objective thing). For example - subjectively I don't like Nikon colors (not in RAW files, not in JPEGs) - that's subjective. I hate Canon focusing issues, and especially 3rd party lens focusing issues (on other systems too) - that's objective. I don't like how Fuji measures ISO. Samsung has poor range of lenses and died cause of mediocre camera system. I didn't like Sony colors, or just the experience when using the camera (placement of buttons, settings, etc) - that's subjective. Sony A9 advertised as sports camera having overheating issues when shooting in warm day, and having banding when using electronic shutter (5fps on mechanical - a joke for sports camera) - that's objective. JL can't say negative things about Sony (he never did, although there are some Sony cameras with notorious issues). Some other channels can't say negative stuff about other brands (or multiple brands) cause they are sponsored, etc. Do you get my point now? In this case, it's about Sony, but it's not a war on Sony, I will also critique the brands I'm using for issues they are having or if they false advertise something, and everyone should do it. And if you ask why, the answer is simple - if we all raise are voice and critique the bad stuff, these things will get corrected, and brands will do more QA, and we will end up with brands releasing better cameras.
I shot entire wedding by Sony a6000 with no issues, fast autofocus even during low light. IMHO a9 is much better than a6000. So many Sony haters just don't want to see a great Sony camera out there, you guys need to check your mental health before you complain the camera even you never put your finger on it :)
JIA FOTO what gear and lens did you use?
Awesome video, can't wait for part 2!
Loved it! Can't wait for Part 2!
Nice video, thanks Jason. Sounds like another good Sony camera. Keep up the good work. All the best 👍
Brilliant how you work with the environment, the props, and the people.
Amazing video very interesting and helpful! More of this please! Awesome photos and amazing work! Thanks
Beautiful shots, Jason. Thanks for sharing these things with us.... Really informative.
@jasonlanier I've following your work for a while now you have some amazing, inspiring work.
Jason, your work is inspiring. Excellent video!
Watching this now beautiful!
You are the living proof that gear is irrelevant when you know what you're doing. You are also the living proof that most of the crap and smearing thrown towards Sony mirrorless cameras are either fabrications or incompetence. There are no "perfect" cameras, only people that master their craft and bold people that will push it further. Keep up JL. You inspire me.
Iannis Maragakis thank you brother!
Realy nice work Jason ! Bravo
good video dude. can't wait for the second part.
Great video as always!!!
Gorgeous place. Gorgeous couple. Gorgeous photos. Looking forward to part 2. :)
Beautiful job!
Beautiful shots! nice!
Great video man! I see that photography is more about learning how the light can be manipulated in your favor. Thanks man!
I do enjoy your work, but lately these videos seem more like Sony commercials. If the videos concentrated more on the work without throwing in the Sony plugs, it would be so much better. If the person behind the camera has the talent, then the system used is not as important. As I have mentioned previously, Sony is doing a good job enhancing their line. This will only push Canon and Nikon which will push Sony and we all win not matter what we use. I think what irks non-Sony users is when people describe items such as the joy stick, dual card slots, auto-focusing system, high frame rate as if these features were not on other camera systems first or in my opinion that is how it comes across. I can only speak for Canon, these have been around for some time and Sony is catching up. We can debate the focusing systems between the two systems, Canon lets you choose how to handle the two card slots, (dual write or auto switch for example), don't know how many times in portraits or weddings I would want to rapid fire the 1DX. I am not saying that Sony isn't doing a good job, but those items are not revolutionary. 5 axis stabilization, that is something Canon and Nikon should do. The Pentax people have had that advantage for some time and Sony has done a nice job by implementing that feature. While I see nothing wrong with using the A9 for weddings even though Sony advertises it as a Pro body for sports and wildlife, it comes across as Sony users trying to justify the camera due to the lack of long Pro lenses for sports and wildlife. Strong Sony offerings will only help us Canon and Nikon folks as hopefully they will get a wake up call. You mentioned in many videos that it doesn't matter what equipment you use, which I totally agree with. I really do enjoy your work, but lately I feel that you are spending a large amount of time pushing the Sony product more than your work which should be what is highlighted in these videos. It comes across as if you are not using Sony, then how can you possibly be getting great results with something else. Again in my opinion, many of us are missing out on the talent you can share because its appears lately to be how Sony is helping you get those results when it really is just your ability. You may say that it doesn't matter what camera you use and I believe inside you feel that way, but outwardly, you keep praising Sony as if they are the perfect system.
Thank you for the video Mr. Lanier. It is quite amazing seeing how you compose your amazing photographs! This is the first time I have looked at your comments section, and I have no clue why there is so much hate. You never put down people who use different gear, but people seem to want to criticize you for your gear and not your results. And, although your reviews do come across as advertisements sometimes, reviewing the gear never seem to be the focus of your videos. I like how you talk about your gear, but you don't say that you can't get similar results with different gear. Instead, you show how your gear makes your life better, and you tell people to find gear that works for them. Once again, thank you for your videos!
Great video, awesome images !
Great video Jason! Keep up the good work!
Great stuff Jason! ....as always!
Derek Novaes thank you!
Beautiful shots Sir..
I was one of the attendees at this workshop. Jason is incredibly talented, dedicated (maybe obsessed), and the hardest working artisan in the photography community. The only way to truly understand is to GO TO A WORKSHOP AND SEE!!! The overheating claim is absurd and nonsense, wasn’t ever even a consideration so I’m not going to talk about it. I spent a huge amount of time behind Jason’s shoulder. I’m the guy talking to him at 9:55 in the video. Jason is totally open about everything he does. As you can see we went through a ton of his shots straight off the camera (yes some were not keepers) and we talked about what went right and what went wrong during the entire shoot (for us both). Jason is totally above board with everything he does. All he really wants to do is push the art of photography forward. Beyond his own work, beyond the vendors, beyond the trolls, he really just wants to celebrate the art and its artists, and help teach you to be a better photographer. Again, go to a workshop and it will all become clear to you. Thanks for all your help Jason!
Thank you brother. I love your comments and truly appreciate them. Thanks for coming, I can't wait to see you again!!
Those shots with the sun right behind the bride and groom. Just beautiful.
Jason you're simply amazing at photography.
Perfect for every event captures every moment
The shots you took were breathtaking. Seriously perfect stuff. Thanks for the video.
Amazing!
I just randomly watch this video for no reason, come out enjoying the whole video
Wow Amazing Camera+Photographer.....Dope
Great ideas for shots! Awesome Job! I dont care what system is in use but 20fps is mind blow! My nikon have 6,5fps and i dont use it as much but when i saw that continous shots! Maaaan!
Great video Jason I'm looking forward to assisting you today in DC
Amazing!! Thanks Jay for your inspiration...also, I have the same black long sleeve shirt that you were wearing....lol. Keep up the great work you do....
Great Video!!!
amazing!
You are amazing Jason. I am happy Sony have someone like you; I am seriously considering Sony as my next upgrade from Canon; Good Luck!
Whew...thanks for renewing my faith in Sony...! We can just sweep the other overheating reports under the carpet!
I like your serene attitude, it's often not the case for wedding photographers which are speedy and run everywhere to find the good angle. That's why I will never be a good wedding photographer, also I suck at taking pictures :P
I love it 58 dislikes. Seriously? An A9 is in my future pending a few lenses and what happens with the A7RIII. Another great video bro! Wish I were with you in DC.
Jason, I shoot with a Sony A7, A7R, and A7RII, 5 degrees to 105, and never has a body overheat. I shoot on the coast and in the rain--no problems. I shoot in the mountains and in the sandy desert. A bunch of internet BS if you ask me. Further, I generally shoot with 2 cameras switching the bodies on the same tripod. The original A7R with a Canon 55mm F1.2 keeps up with the A7RII, sometimes best the new body. In lightroom or photoshop, I need to read which camera the photo was taken with. Remember--when it come to lights, or lighting--you are the man!!!
Jason, looking to start getting back into photography as i took it in high school but never had to buy a camera, I'm looking at getting the Sony A6500 and was wondering what wide angle, prime and zoom lens you would recommend, leaning on the 500$ range for each?
Hi, can you recommend me a good Flash? Great video by the way
Great job Jason!! Can you answer what aperture you choose for shots like this at 0:10 ?
Great weight loss Jason, walking better too, keep it up mate. Great video.
Nice job, Jason! This may be the first time I saw Jason shooting through the EVF with the camera braced against his face rather than holding the camera away from his body.
Hi Jason I'm trying to learn how to shoot outside in the sun using a flash, just like you did for this wedding, any suggestions on what kind of lighting for someone still kind of new?
Amazing Camera Sony A9 skin tone beutifull
i dont think camera will get overheat for just taking photos... Awesome video Jason.. may i know which profile u use in this kinna of intense light enviroment
Sony presented the A9 as a sports/wildlife Camera Lanier pushes it as portrait/ wedding camera. Nice one
Christos Phillippou don't worry I'll get to sports..:)
It's interesting reading these year+ old posts. I have a Canon 5DIII as well as a Sony a6000. Which one gets more use? The Sony. I like that it's significantly lighter than the Canon. The controls and learning to shoot with it was a bit different at first, but I got through it. The colors are great. The images are sharp. Lightroom works with the Sony Raw files. What's not to like? An a9 must be fricking heaven to work with.
is it good enough for sport or wildlife photography ? 20 fps is the fastest, but the autofocus it is better than canon 1dx mark 2 or d5 ?
Mr Lanier, I have a A9. When I used it with my godox flash in HSS the auto white balance does not produce the desired colors. What is your recommendation on white balance settings during flash usage. Your follower from India.
Wanted to attend your DC shop, when u here this weekend but had a shoot tonight and prom shoot tomorrow. Hope u having a great workshop here in DC. :)
thanks again Jason for meeting me and talking, taking a pic with me at the Hotel. wish i could stay to assist u. Next time for sure. I hope i am the first person that took a pic of you with their own Sony A9..
Jason's work speaks for itself he in an amazing photographer, the camera just allows his vision to show. I've seen some of his other work and it is every bit as good. I wouldn't mind taking some of his work shops. Between him and Matt Granger they are talented. If you like Jason or Matt or not they both have work that speaks for themselves. Very good, I'm sorry great Jason.
Hey Jason, Canon cameras have a button that lets you "rate" your photos 1-5 stars for sorting in lightroom, I wonder does the A9 or A7rII have that feature?
Beautiful video! Great photos. I must be the other guy that never has any problems with Sony. :) I am a landscape photographer, so I am currently sitting on the sidelines with my A7RII.
Agreed. My RII has never overheated.
For someone who is a beginner what camera and lenses do you recommend for wedding photography?
5:17 Curious as to why you're only shooting with one camera at a real wedding event. I got anxious watching you switch lenses in these critical moments.
I had the same reaction! Why was he chilling at the back, not even looking at the bride and her dad. If he dropped his lens he would have missed one of the most important moments of the day! I'm always in the front near the groom when the bride walks up.
Hi Jason, What type of flash do you use for wedding?
God bless you what white balance do you use when you are using the flash?
I shot a wedding at Taber Ranch a few years ago. It was one of the windiest weddings ever at the top of that ceremony site. Beautiful property though.
Looking forward to getting the a9.
floyd bent it is overheating gust wait
A few people had a problem, most do not, yet you are focused on a small minority. 100 people could say they shot in the heat without a problem and 2 says they did. The haters ignore the 100 because they don't tell the story the haters want to hear.
Very nicely done. Excellent photos, great performance from the A9 also! Honestly I am very excited about A9! 1. Just wondering, somebody below claiming to have been with you throughout the workshop said they had to pay for being in the workshop? I don't really know but maybe that's how it works. 2. Write 300mb and read 299mb? How much does that UHS card cost? 3. Living proof of no overheating and sustainable battery. True. A freshly charged, brand new battery, turning camera off while not shooting, etc, should do the trick. How about using a half-lifed battery, like most of us laymen do? Or I could just ignore the temp. warning and keep shooting, as the camera should continue to work until it shuts down. I think Sony simply forgot to put in a bigger heatsink, or using a bigger metal body to help dissipate heat. 4. A9 plus G Master lens would cost how much? A9 is a good camera, I believe, because so many new technologies are implemented. New technology, plain and simple, but it doesn't mean Canon or Nikon or all the other brands are shamed by Sony. Canon and Nikon and other brands have come a long way, and Sony catches up because they don't have the burden of the old system (plus a lot of advertising). Also, it seems people just forget about A99 ii! Having said that, I still wouldn't dump my old 7D and 5DSR and all my Canon or Sigma lenses just to catch that Sony bus (also I simply despise adapters). Too much cost to fully convert, that's the truth; so maybe all the other brands are like useless dinosaurs to Sony lovers, but unfortunately not to me. 5. BTW that drone renders A9's silent mode meaningless lol. Honestly I am not a big fan of the simulated shutter sound; call me old-school, but I just don't think cameras are cameras without the real shutter sound, not saying I don't appreciate that 20 fps though... It is amazing!
good dynamic range
hey Jason, I've shot this venue before and it was the hottest temp wedding it was near 100 and no breeze
I wish that you could talk in some detail about the Sony focusing modes and which ones you prefer or which modes you use most often. I am now a Sony shooter having moved from Nikon in the last month. Am I happy I switched? Yes I am, Sony lenses give me high contrast, intense color, and sharpness from wide open to F16. However focus modes on Nikon and Sony a7rii are totally different and has taken some practice on my part to get what I need. I hope you can do a video or something to help some us who may be focus challenge. Thanks, Art
Sony cameras have been amazing since the intro of the A7. The A9 is another breakthrough. Time to unload all of my Nikon and Canon DSLRs on EBay.
would you still go with the A9 or the A7R iii in todays update and firmware?
Great job Jason👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽 and a9 not overheating ? 😻😻😻😻😻😻
Jason would you be happy using this for stuff like landscape photos? (Yes yes I know the A7RII is technically 'better' but I can only have one camera and the focusing ability and weather sealing of the A9 is particularly appealing to me as I do a lot of travel photography!).
Best sir
Jason... I noticed that you didn't use the Rotolight Aeos but It seems like it would've been an easier option. I have never used it but from the looks of it, it could've gotten the job done quite nicely no?
Thank goodness for the parasols!
which camera r u using for shooting video?
Can't find part 2 the reception. Was it taken down? Where is the link?
Perfect shots in the midday sun; This is why you want a good pro to shoot your wedding.
Hey, do you like the A9 better than the A7rii? I only ask because I'm about to purchase the a7rii and idk if I'm making the right choice.
Deadman Arcade unless your doing fast paced sport a lot get the a7rii because it produces better quality images. A9 is mainly for fast stuff but still great for normal stuff
KAVINSKY311 that's what I thought. I do most you weddings, portraits, and landscapes and the a7R2 is cheaper so I can probably get some lenses
Deadman Arcade I do weddings also and I have 2x a7rii body's. I wouldn't trade one for an a9 because they have much more detail and dynamic range in the images
KAVINSKY311 oh sweet, how big would you say your biggest file would be? And also do you think I should wait for the miii or buy used for 2300?
Deadman Arcade the uncompressed raw files can come close to 100mb. Compressed 40mb and x fine jped around 15-30mb. I would not recommend getting an a7rii used. Better buy one new. The a7rii image quality will be good enough for professional work for at least 10 years.
I got so much respect for child and infant photographers! Lol! They could give two craps about anything! Gotta love me though!
The camera did not overheat while shooting a wedding. Got any sports gigs coming up to really put it through its paces?
Jason, if the Sun is coming from the left, why wouldn't you put the flash on the right side to fill the shadows?
good job
What I have never understood is why so many ppl greatly dislike Jason, i can even say the hate him. When all I see is a man doing what he loves. I understand we can't expect all love from everyone, but why follow a guy and watch his videos only to hate. If u don't like him, don't like his work, hate Sony cameras, then you are free to stop watching his videos. Or maybe you are just entertained like the rest of us, but just hate to admit it.
Never had an issue with my a7sii overheating. Been shooting video with it for a year and a half.
I noticed that during the posed shots you used the strobe camera left throwing light from the direction of the sun. Why wouldn't you use it camera right, to fill from the shadow side?
lol I found this inspiring. id love to see you try this without moving. only moving the model.
I just noticed that you were only using one camera and swapping lenses. I use prime lenses at weddings (35mm & 85mm) and on two occasions I was told that I was not professional for swapping lenses. Once time Someone in the crowd said they were studing photography at university so i offered them my camera to take over the shoot but they just backed off.
I'm glad Jason did not have any issues. He is an amazing photographer and although I don't shoot Sony, I have learned a lot by watching his videos and hope he gets to Chicago area soon. I only hope he is not doing these videos to discount the issues that others are possibly having!
Is the strobe on ttl or are you setting the power manually.
Andrew Throup manually brother
Why are the highlights so overblown on some images? (like that little kid) I get that it was a harsh light, but even my 5D II can pull details out of those highlights?
Nice gopro highlights :)
What camera do u use to record ur vlog?
Hi Have you tried 4k and HD in APS-C mode
How was your rapid box set up for this shoot?
When will you showing the finished photos?
Wow - What a fantastic video Jason. Superb work.
damn good work i live in the area and i can tell you its hot out here lately, not a cloud in the sky makes limitations I am sure. luckily for you that xplor is a beast. my question is why is your group of photographer attendees taking the same shots without the xplor seems pointless.
I read a comment today on facebook i found really funny. the guy says how eveyone has made it sound like the A9 focusing is so amazing. and he says in some cases it is. but sometimes its no better or only equal to my 1Dx ll. i always knew there would be a day where mirrorless performed equal or better than a top DSLR. But i never thought i would see the day that someone is whining that the focusing is only equal to his 1DXll haha. Sony has come a long way
photographerjonathan 2000$ difference between canon 1dxmii and sony a9 !!! and yet they perform on same level
How does a 400mm f4, or 500mm, or 600mm do on a Sony A9 for wildlife? That is right, there are no Sony lenses in that range. Put on an adapter to use the Canon lenses, from what I understand, now the A9 is behind the 1DX Mark II. How configurable are the dual card slots? Can I have the A9 auto switch when one is full? Dual write? Only as fast as your slowest card. If you are not a Sony artisan, how is turn around time for a problem? What level of support do you have? Both are nice cameras, but my math says $5999-$4599 is $1400 US. Still a a large amount of money, but I would buy another 1DX II because it does what I need very well and I bought into a system that has a large amount of lenses for what the camera is built for and Canon support. I hope that the 1DX III incorporates some of the Sony features, stabilization and some type of EVF, (hybrid maybe). Sony has come a far way, but until they have comparable lenses so that the two systems can be compared for what they are meant for, Pro Sport and Wildlife shooters, lets not yet call them on the same level.
pebmets they have a 70/200 and a 100/400 and they have a 2x extender. and i wouldnt be buying the A9 for the same reasons as you. so for me the lenses that are available are enough. and the 1Dx is just to big and heavy. i can have an A9 with a 24/70 lens and be a similar weight to the 1Dx body alone. Canon better get with the times because they are starting to look like dinosaurs that are going extinct. and good luck with hoping the 1Dx lll has IBIS and hybrid view finder. people like me waited 5 years for the 5D4. only to get 4k with an unusable jpg. format and a 1.7 crop factor.
photographerjonathan, Sony does have the lenses you mention, but if we go with what the camera is advertised for, Sony does not yet have the fast primes that serious wildlife and sports uses like to have.. I am sure down the road this will happen, but I am a wishful Canon user hoping that in that time, Canon wakes up and incorporates some of the items I like about the A9. Some form of EVF and in body stabilization are things I would like to have in a Canon body. I am a believer that the more Sony pushes, Canon and Nikon have to do something. Having Fuji in the game as well, may force Canon to get off their back side and push innovation as they once did and in that case all camera users win.
