It has taken me nearly 20 years to admit it, but this was a fantastic team Greece had. Without any stars , they assembled a team full of confidence and belief that they went out and beat some a team full of stars who had won everything like France. Greece 2004 is straight out of Greek mythology, all smaller teams should study them

It wasn't just luck. For example in this game the teams looked pretty even and the final result was not a travesty Maybe France didn't look like they were at best but most of it was due to the disruptions Greece caused in the midfield

Greece had the greatest footballers as Greece.And Otto didn't have many greek superstars like Akis Zikos (Monaco back then,CL final against Porto),Georgatos (one of the best cb ever existed for Greece),Ntampizas (he played for Alan Sheerer's Newcastle back then,a skillfull defender) and many many more

@@nwa7769 Premièrement, je répondait au fait que tu disais qu'il n'était pas décisif dans les grands matchs. Et puisqu'on parle de jeu, je t'invite à revoir la finale de l'Euro 2000, certes il n'a pas marqué, mais il a été un vrai poison pour la défense italienne.

@@loicdelacroix6873 oui et je confirme, Henry était éclaté dans les grands matchs, et ça a toujours été son gros soucis, et il a toujours été énormément critiqué pour ça même par les plus fervents supporters d’Arsenal. Son match en finale de l’Euro 2000 je l’ai vu en direct… encore une fois catastrophique, Pires, Wiltord et Trezeguet ont plus apporté en 10 minutes que Henry pendant tout le match… Henry ça fonctionnait contre Everton et compagnie dans des larges victoires à Highbury, mais quand il fallait les porter dans les grands moments il avait les jambes qui tremblait. Ne serait ce qu’à Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge, Anfield ou même White Hart Lane, y’avait plus personne. Tu ne vas pas refaire l’histoire.

Por coincidencia, en aquellos años, utilizando un sistema similar al de la Grecia 2004, Boca Junior de Argentina salió 3 veces campeón de la copa libertadores: 2000, 2001, 2003, y también Cienciano de Perú en la copa Sudamericana 2002. 👍

One reason this team failed, and I'm not taking anything away from Greece, is the system they tried to play. Zidane as a side midfielder just doesn't work unless it's in a false winger system that actually plays him as a 10. This was done to accommodate Henry and Trezeguet as they were the in-form strikers at the time, but it enabled Greece with their hard working system to isolate Zizou out on the wing. YOu'll notice Zidane is almost absent from this video as well

@@hecate7163 Yes, I mentioned that too. Real Madrid had a different system, built around a single striker and more offensive wingbacks, which allowed him to cut in and be a inverted 10 from the wings. Which btw was also eventually not as successful as they wanted it to be

@@hecate7163 Yes it was, while France in 2004 played more of a flat 4 with Zidane playing out right most of the time, as can be seen here too, which is a silly way to play him (kind of like when Riquelme was shoved to the side in Barcelona) I think the perfect system for Zidane is what France played in Euro 00, which is why he had his best tournament there too, it is also a 4-2-3-1 like you said, but rather than a Xavi type in the double pivot, there needs to be a more destroyer type to really allow Zidane more control, which is what Deschamps/Petit (and later on Makelele) filled, combined with a box to box type like Vieira, who could run forward with the ball and press above, which Gerrard could do

French dream team, but Zidane out wide doesnt work. 4-3-1-2 or a 4-2-3-1 wouldve been better as Zidane couldve been behind the striker(s) as #10. 🤷♂️ Credit to Greece as they were able to capitalize throughout the tournament with their golden generation.

I am German but lived in Greece at that time, thus I only saw the matches with Greek commentary. It is interesting to hear it from neutral point of view and at the half time whistle the commentator is saying that it is impressive how they are performing but it gets cut.

Тут пишут что у греков была команда фантастика без звёзд что дело не в удачи. Я смотрел в прямом эфире этот матч. Сегодня вы видите как Франции не везло с голом . Обороняться легче чем играть с мячом и ломать оборону. Абсолютно незаслуженная победа греков. Франция должна и обязана была выйти в финал. Про финал я не буду писать. Это другой матч. Там португальцам тоже не везло.

This was not a joke. This was the biggest shock that soccer (and the betting offices) ever experienced. This arrogance to underestimate the courage and discipline of the Hellenes was the greatest triumph of the Greek (and any) national team!
