  • I like the fan interpretation that Dante's sudden shift in mood and personality is that he's incredibly depressed and burnt-out after killing Nelo Angelo in DMC1 and is just going through the motions this entire game. It fits in nicely to where he's at in the Animated Series, even if we know that the real reason is just because an unnamed producer thought talkative Dante was lame.

    • Yeah, it's the only explanation that makes sense when taking into account the series as a whole. Dude had to kill his brother twice, that'd do a lot to make anyone depressed.

      @OPLOmega@OPLOmega11 ай бұрын
    • In the DMC2 novel, Dante gets pulled into an alternate reality where he has to kill Trish (not much of a spoiler). Killing someone who looks identical to his dead mother probably reminded him of an unpleasant memory that would also lead him to having this behavior.

      @leonlegend@leonlegend11 ай бұрын
    • The anime also added a running gag about how Dante always loses at gambling, which retroactively gives the fake coin a little bit more meaning. That show was working overtime in order to retroactively make Dante's attitude in DMC 2 make any sort of sense and I appreciate it.

      @paulgrider@paulgrider11 ай бұрын
  • I do like the fan theory that Dante was going through a depressed phase after the events of DMC1. Trish disappearing, realizing she’s not really “his mom”, and Vergil being dead and leaving him all alone with no family gave us this DMC2 Dante

    @MrBonzeMedal@MrBonzeMedal11 ай бұрын
    • the 2007 anime supports this theory too, since dante is clearly depressed in it and it takes place just before the events of the 2nd game. Even if its not totally canon its a good theory and i agree with it

  • To answer your question about whether people called this Dante "Donte" back in the day, pretty much, yes. He was so radically different from the first game's Dante that for a while, there was this prevailing theory that this was someone else impersonating Dante. The PS2 version of Viewtiful Joe would even joke about DMC2 Dante by implying it was actually Dante's associate Enzo who stole his clothes and gear.

Lady in DMC 3 was alright, but Lucia really just gave an Irish goodbye as far as the franchise goes. She was being built up so much and then... Aw fuck you prequel time. But DMC3 is the last game I have played and I am interested in maybe eventually picking up 4 and 5 at some point, but just the nothing burger the "story" ended up being, almost makes this game seem like an obligatory sequel due to sales and no true artistic direction.

Supposedly they accidentally measured the amount of audio data and realized it couldn’t fit on one PS1 disk. They might have been able to fix it, but they found out late in development. So they had to put the game on 2 disk. But it kind of gave Capcom a marketing advantage by claiming the game was so big that they couldn’t fit it on one disk. Supposedly they were trying to do the same thing here just on purpose.

  • 19:53 The million stab is performed with triangle, triangle, then direction+triangle while in DT. It is basically Dante´s DT combo C. The weird/neat thing about this game is that all the directional combos are different between human and DT form. There is also a cool exploit you can do with this move. If you turn off DT just before the million stab animation, Dante will still perform the move as if in DT, but will not have to pay the DT cost. I really enjoyed this review and congrats on your 300th video. Looking forward to DMC3. Consider playing through the game with original mode first to get a more authentic feel. Also be sure to get one of your bros to test out the Switch version´s co-op bloody palace mode.

  • It can be up in the air for those who might not be familiar with the 2 sided coin, but it's quite a well known object that has appeared in other forms of media as well (like manga and shit). With that said, this coin is often used to hide the owner's own feelings and intentions. Think of Crow from Deadman Wonderland. Throughout the entire manga he is shown as narcissistic, uncaring and tough, but would usually do favors to others as long as his two sided coin would determine so. Long story short, he does eventually reveal it was all a facade and that he does actually care about those around him, he was just trying to keep his tough, masculine image. By that what I mean is that Dante did in fact care about Lucia and her request, but to not show his real emotions, he hide them with his 2 sided coin and attributed everything to "luck" or "fate". This is implied even at the end when Lucia receives the coin and realizes Dante was deceiving her the whole time, refering to him as "that macho" while having a smile on her face. It should be noted this is quite in character with Dante as in both DMC1 and DMC3 (which is a prequel to DMC1), Dante shows emotions but always refuses to accept them (there's in fact a scene in DMC3 I am not going to spoil for you). Anyways, yeah, no, it's not a joke as you believe.

  • the only good thing to have come out of Devil May Cry 2 was Dante's inclusion as a reoccurring Boss and eventual recruitable party member in Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne (fun fact: thats where the little "Featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series" meme came from- it was a sticker they printed on European copies of the game)

  • I'm going to borrow a quote from Patton Oswalt on his experience on Blade Trinity as it applies to DMC2 very well. "If you just sit and play Devil May Cry 2 it's a D- it just doesn't work, but if you know what they went through to get that video game made, it is an A+."

  • 25:03 - 25:44 I did have this problem for a while when I was younger but I eventually grew out of it. I mean as just one example, despite how much I love the classic series, I can't tell you how long I avoided Mega Man & Bass because of how much it gets ripped online. (especially from Johnny) Since everyone said it was awful I just didn't want to waste my time with it. It wasn't until I saw EPG's RoR episode on MM&B that I finally decided to give it a shot and holy hell do I love it. Despite how many games Johnny has introduced me to that I also fell in love with, this time I missed out on a game that I ended up loving because of its reputation, which I want to stress is not Johnny's fault by any stretch. It's mine entirely, for being so immature and not taking the opportunity to form my own opinion and taking someone else's as fact.

  • DMC2 is admittedly and always will be a guilty pleasure for me as I got that alongside DMC1 and played the hell out of them both. It has flaws. LOTS of flaws but I still enjoy it regardless. As for Dante's attitude...well with the official timeline being 3 > 1 > 2 > 4 > 5. I've always taken his shift in attitude being the realization that he's alone now, especially after realizing he killed his brother in 1. Obviously that doesn't excuse when DMC2 originally came out but I think hindsight helped Dante's characterization in 2, especially with the anime going into detail that Dante is immensely depressed when not on the job. Loved the review Johnny and I've been enjoying your marathon on a series I love very much. Looking forward to the next one!

  • The only things I liked most about DMC2 are Dante's design and the potential Lucia had as a mainstay. Since Capcom's on a remake spree this game would benefit the most from one. If they decided to make Dante have more serious personality as he gets older Capcom coulda gotten away with making prequels like DMC3 and 4 _(before DMC5 released the fanbase agreed DMC2 was chronologically the last in the series)_ with a wackier Dante, while also potentially making Lucia a partner he'd settle down with (like they weirdly tried show hints of with Trish in the first game). Shame the only time she returns in the series is in an short paragraph of an optional prequel novel to DMC5. If she ever returns in-game they def need to fix her voice because her accent changes from French to Italian to American between lines and sometimes mid-sentence. Btw 18:44 you can do air combos in DMC2 but it's a bit awkward. You have to hold down the lock on button, tilt the left stick behind where Dante/Lucia is facing and then press the attack button. I found this out by pure accident.

  • The infested chopper boss is the single greatest boss in all of video gaming. Devil May Cry 2 is already known as one of the greatest of all time (GOAT factor = high on this one), but the infestation that plagues the cities of Devil May Cry 2 allows for an extremely emotionally-complex character set. The infestation is a manifesto of our society and the zombie-like enthusiasm we take in our militarism, which is a great moral leap backwards. It spreads to the masses, and the military continues to kill. In that sense, the Infested Chopper boss fight is something more. You fight it once and it takes forever to beat. This mimics the reality of persuading a military enthusiast in real life - it takes forever. Then, the more you fight the choppers, you realize that the mission of beating them all is impossible. It is a grim fate that only Devil May Cry 2 can convey accurately. In other words, the infested chopper is definitively the single greatest boss fight in gaming and represents all of society's fears, which tells many stories which are incomprehensibly deep.

  • The best about Bloody Palace in DMC2 is that the thing is glitched. There is a good chance that it will crash on the higher floors. When I 100%ed this game on the PS3 I suddenly got a black screen somewhere around the final few floors. I was about to throw my PS3 out of the window, but then I realized that I could still hear Trish's footsteps, when tilting the analogue stick, so I just ran around, mashing buttons in hopes of activating one of the portals. It actually worked.
