    • @@kollie79Another part I love about that exchange is that by that point of the game, Dante has grown up, becoming fully matured and at that moment, he was truly fighting for a noble cause. Vergil meanwhile had not grown at all and had no worthy cause or goal, just seeking to take power for power's sake.

  • 11:09 Actually one of the cool things about Arkham and Jester is that he's playing both the brothers to his own ends. Arkham with Vergil is an even more extreme version of him, stone-faced and only concerned with the goal. Jester with Dante is an even more extreme version of him, untouchable and seemingly unwilling to take anything seriously. It further plays into the duality theme throughout the game, showing there's really no difference between Dante and Vergil. They've both assumed masks to process their trauma. Vergil isn't able to drop his at the end and it dooms him, but Dante is able to drop his just a little and he "wakes up to justice" like his father before him and becomes the protector of humanity. Dante's Awakening, in other words.

    @speed-sm5jz@speed-sm5jz11 ай бұрын
    • Arkham is somewhat underrated as an antagonist. He's no Vergil obviously, but I'd still take him over Mundus or the villian from DMC2 that I already forgot the name of. in fact, I might even prefer him over DMC4's, but we'll get to it next game.

      @leithaziz2716@leithaziz271611 ай бұрын
    • Arkham was definitely a better antagonist than Arius. Arkham was at least proactive throughout 3, playing everybody in the tower to his tune. Arius felt like he didn't do shit until the tail end of the game.

  • Vergil's motivation for more power stems from the trauma of nearly being mauled to death by demons. His mother died looking for him and he believed she abandoned him. He never wants to experience that again. It is mostly expanded upon in supplemental material. There's a manga tie-in for DMC V that explains a lot.

    @Shellshock39@Shellshock3911 ай бұрын
    • Not to mention that Dante, in this game, calls out Vergil on this: "What are you going to do with all that power?" It's not missing motivation, it's a part of Vergil's character that he hasn't given much thought to acquiring power beyond "I'll finally be able to feel safe because nobody will be capable of doing bad things to me". Even though he doesn't have anything he wants to protect other than himself, he looks down on Dante trying to protect other things because Dante doesn't have the same drive to emulate their father, who Vergil sees as the embodiment of power.

      @SuperfieldCrUn@SuperfieldCrUn11 ай бұрын

    • Right, I think the series' writing is much stronger than what the surface, early 2000s edge, might suggest. At the start of the game, Vergil and Dante have the same image of their father: Sparda, the all mighty warrior. Their reactions are the exact opposite though. Vergil seeks power to not feel weak like that one night that he will never forget, and so he idolizes his father as a symbol of power. Dante, hates him for the same reason, he saw how the demons destroyed his home and killed his mother and grew up hating that aspect of his heritage. Demons aren't worthy of respect or compassion, therefore he denies his demonic heritage. What changed was Dante's perspective on his father and demonkind. He learned about the lengths he went through to seal the two worlds apart from each other in order to protect the humanity. They may have been weak but he still chose to help them, he cared about them. Dante realizes that this challenges his notion on what it means to be human or demon. Rather that the only real monsters are those who cannot empathize with others and maliciously use others for their gain, what kind of being they are is meaningless. This changes his image of his father to Sparda, the compassionate hero, and gives him an ideological reason to stop Vergil rather than a weak, childish dislike of his brother. And then his character arc ties into the arc phrase of the series: "Devils never cry".

    • Gosh, so much Visions of V should've been in the main story. I get that it would've pulled down the pacing a ton, but that last chapter closes the Dante and Vergil relationship with such a nice bow, it pains me 99% of people playing the game will never see it. SPOILERS FOR BOTH THE GAME AND THE MANGA But MAN that final conclusion is both cathartic and a reward for following their story so far, and that's before the actual final boss fight in the game. Vergil finally realizes that it was never about power, it was never about Sparda, it wasn't even him getting skewered in front of his house and taking years to find out if anyone survived. He was just so scared for years he never learned anything but to fight back, and every time he sees Dante having surpassed the trauma, he just wants to show he can be just as good but doesn't know how to communicate anymore if it doesn't involve fighting.

  • One interesting thing I find about the duality between Dante and Vergil is how they responded to their trauma and their heritage. Vergil blames his own lack of power, and so became obsessed with it. He curses his human side for being weak, to the point of rarely using guns, as those are the weapons of humanity, or weaklings. One thing to notice is that, within the series, I don't think a single demon uses guns. On the flipside, Dante (reasonably) blamed the loss of his mother on demons. He hates demons, starting a business just to hunt them down. And at the start of the game, while he doesn't make it obvious, he's not fond of the fact he's half demon. There's a reason he hasn't awakened Devil Trigger at the start of the game, while Vergil already has his. And this plays into their power dynamic over the course of the game. In their first fight, Vergil wins. Dante favors his human side over his demon side, while Vergil does the opposite, and so Vergil has more power. But, over the course of the game, Dante becomes more comfortable with his demonic side, more accepting of it. And then when the two face off again, there's no clear winner. At the end, Dante fully embraces both sides of himself, accepting that his demon blood does give him great power, but also understanding his humanity isn't a weakness, but a strength. Vergil refuses to accept his humanity as anything but a weakness, however, and he ultimately loses because of that.

The line "Gotta finish the mess father left behind" given before facing Arkham is a nice development from Dante's attitude during the start of the game with the line "Father? I don't have a father. This is in fact an extremely common response to losing a parent suddenly, it's one if those things that seems cartoony but in reality is just EXACTLY how real life humans work. The exact same thing applies to Dante, who goes through the opposite reaction to trauma, cutting himself off from genuine connections and putting on an act of exaggerated vibrato to hide how actually depressed he is, himself included.

    • It makes the second Secret Mission in mission (I think) 14, the one where you’re on the tram or whatever and have to kill all enemies without them escaping, like 5 times more doable as well when you use it with the Spiral. It also makes the Artemis more fun to use. Actually I never really got the hang of Gunslinger completely until my most recent play through as Dante. That being said, it is still always the style I upgrade last since I’m more of a melee player.

  • 7:08 Vergil obviously wants power to defeat Mundus, to follow in his father´s footsteps, as well as get revenge for the demon attack where his mother died and he was powerless to protect her. That is the reason why he stays in the underworld in the end. Giving it a shot even without Force Edge (since Dante seems to always take his stuff 😆)

  • It's a pretty crazy winding road to know that Rueben Langdon worked on pretty much every side of the Power Rangers / Tokusatsu scene before joining Capcom, and he's the reason why Dan Southworth (Eric / Quantum Ranger from PR Time Force) and next game, The Bosch himself, auditioned for the roles they got. There's a couple of Power Rangers alumni sprinkled among games after this point, and I wish there were more, given the Saturday night anime action vibe DMC and RE were going for. It's a much better fate for those actors' skills, to have Capcom feel like PR All Stars, than what usually happens. I mean, dramas on CBS? REALLY?

Vergil and Dante’s home was attacked by demons when they were 8 years old their mom was able to find and hide Dante and she was looking for Vergil calling out to him but was struck down by the demons, Vergil however was playing in a nearby park and demons found him and tortured him eventually he awakened his devil trigger and slaughtered the demons and he wondered why their mom never showed up to save him and it really traumatized him and at that point he believed power was everything and he wanted to have as much power as possible to prevent something like that from happening ever again

  • So, one thing I like noting is that in DMC1, Vergil was supposedly kidnapped by a demonic cult, according to design documents by Kamiya. When Itsuno was making plans for 3, he asked Kamiya about making Vergil the antagonist of 3 and Kamiya's response was "That's cooler than what I had. Do that." And really I do think that attitude comes through with the rest of the series with Itsuno being the chief creative vision. Also a small note on the characterization of Vergil, while he does seem like the antithesis to Dante at first he's a lot more like Dante than he cares to admit. The first thing he does when he gets Beowulf as a weapon is style on the guy's corpse, just like how Dante shows off every time he fgets a new toy. The big difference being what each brother thinks is cool. Dante emulates 80s action protags, while Vergil is Akira Kurosawa's biggest fanboy.

I personally feel like it was designed with Artemis in mind given all the cooky things you can pull off. As for Royal Guard just wait until you get to DMC 4 & DMC 5 where that baby gets some much needed refinement.

  • Gunslinger isn’t something I use much in dmc3 but with the style switching on switch I find Artemis very useful with it, it’s multi lock shots melt enemies well

    @robindabank9616@robindabank961611 ай бұрын
  • Long comments about the questions you had for styles and weapons: For Gunslinger, it's really just sword master but for guns. It really works well for combo extensions to keep your style up (stuff like rapid fire and charge shot count as different moves so your style meter increases instead of stales) and gives you more of a long range toolbox to work with (rainstorm comes in handy to hit certain deadzones while you're jumping while delaying your landing and Spiral can ricochet high power armor piercing shots between multiple enemies). Also it makes Artemis decent and kinda fun lol Nevan is a little awkward due to not fully realizing when you can input the next move or see where dante is facing (It's the only weapon in the game that asks for left and right inputs as well as forward and back). It works really for crowd control however. While you can use it by itself and do quite well with it, I think it really shines with combinations of other weapons. A thing you probably haven't noticed you can do yet in your short time playing is that you can cancel the recovery animations of some weapons by switching weapons, style buttons, other moves, or jumping. Nevan feels more fluid when switching or jumping allowing you to do things like attack to stun an enemy, get nevan out set up a bunch of AOE or bats for the surroundings enemies, switch back to another to follow up and repeat. Same for weapons like spiral or the shotgun. You can cancel the recovery of it by switching guns or style moves allowing for Cheesy unintentional strategies like "rapid firing" the shotgun or spiral by Royal guarding after every shot. (Speedrunners use this). Vergil also benefits from this as that slow Hayato he's got becomes way more fun when you do things like Cancel his launcher into Trick up so you don't have to jump and possibly miss your follow up or cancel any move with it into another weapon Definitely not things a normal player would get on their first time (unless you're like me where every time I got a new weapon I IMMEDIATELY went back to the first mission to try it out and lab it for HOURS) but the fighting game-esque depth is what keeps people coming back to this series.

  • Some trivial trivia: 0)At the title screen you see the moon turn into a 0 before it's slashed by Dante's silhouette and becomes a 3, a likely indication before the game even starts that DMC3 can be considered "DMC0", i.e. a prequel. Duality is one of the themes, but another would be the 7 deadly sins which tie DMC3 & its Tower with Dante's Divine Comedy & Mount Purgatory. Obviously at the top of the tower Arkham names the bell statues by their names during the ritual to open the gate to hell and the skeleton enemies are named the Seven Hells (Hell Pride, Greed, Gluttony, Wrath, Lust, Envy & Sloth), however less obvious are the bosses/vices defeated as you traverse the tower to follow Vergil. 1)Pride: "You who are NOT WORTHY are forbidden from this land" - Cerberus. And when defeated Cerberus gladly accepts Dante's worth. 2)Greed: The Firestorm Chamber Agni & Rudra guard has a treasure trove of weapons. When defeated they beg to be taken. 3)Gluttony: However cavernous Leviathan's stomach was, it bit off more than it could chew. (Weirdly, it's usually associated with Envy in demonology) 4)Lust: "Your father was a handsome devil." - Nevan. 5)Wrath: "SPARDA!" - Beowulf, his blind fury literally leads to his demise. 6)Sloth: bit of a stretch, but the unseen passenger in the carriage that never gets out to fight you and the Geryon slowing you down and teleporting about like the Hell Sloth sort of counts. 7)Envy: Doppelganger (Vergil & Arkham share this vice too)

Then this shit got retconned in DMC5 making it seem the reason why he was obsessed with power was in order to defeat/be more powerful than Dante (which is fucking stupid 🤦‍♂️).

    @FindingsOfAnArmouredMind@FindingsOfAnArmouredMind11 ай бұрын
    • I don't think that's necessarily the case. The sibling rivalry thing was definitely always there, but I don't think the idea that he wanted to defeat Mundus was completely thrown out. He's using the same logic he uses when he fights Dante as when he fights Nero: "If I beat Nero, then by default, I beat you." Dante defeated Mundus, therefore to him defeating Dante proves he could defeat Mundus, since Mundus is basically not really around for him to fight anymore (I think, anyway). It's probably why he's so quick to jump to that idea with Nero, he was already on that same line of logic.

Your Pistols can be used to stop an enemy to let you close the distance, or you can juggle them in the air to keep a combo going. Your shotgun can be used to knock close up enemies down and your nunchuck move with it hits all around you. There are exceptions to this like the rocket launcher and sniper which can do some pretty good damage, but generally guns are used to suppliment your melee weapons, which is where most of your damage is gonna come from.

    • @AdamAnouer I actually prefer playing Dante to Nero because he has the devil arms but the backtrack to the start of the game with that amount of padding just makes the whole game not very interesting even with the gimmicks that sprout up in each area. It's also knowing that when you play as Dante there's practically no new fights, just the same ones used in the same arena to artificially increase value.

    • @@logiclunacy606 the only people who enjoy DMC 4 to the fullest are style players, lol

  • Vergil was something in DMC3SE, but in DMC5SE the storm does approach.

  • Yeah the biggest problem with DMC3's style system is that some of them NEED the Levels, with Gunslinger being the worst case. Shot Canceling also helps a ton with this however. At the very least, in the Switch release your no longer married to your style until you clear the stage or hit a shop, and you can swap between all the weapons and guns at once instead of two at a time each.

  • Hi, i find your channel thanks to the youtube algorithm..! Very cool video, the editing was on point and i'm really glad you enjoy it ! I can't wait to see your thought on DMC4 and DMC5 ^^ I've discover the series with "DMC3 special edition" back in the day on PC, it was my favorite all time, but i think DMC5 is really the culmination point of the franchise ! As Dante say : Let's rock !

  • I will say that this marathon has been great. Instant classic in Johnny's long library of great reviews.

  • First time playing the DMC HD trilogy I marathoned all 3 games. Dang, the very first tutorial mission inside Dante's place in DMC3 was alone more satisfying than the whole DMC2! THIS is truly the game that defined the series and yes, it's worth going back to try different styles and perfect your combos. (I'm surprised you didn't mention the pause mechanic in combos which I believe was introduced in this game and became a staple)
