I live in an apartment and theres literally no way I'd be able to do this, but still watched the whole thing lol
Get an extension cord. A roll of masking plastic. A 5 gallion bucket with a mixer attachment and the power tool to power it. Boom, now you can mix it in a 5 gallion. Keep everything clean. An the tools fit in your closet. lol.
Same
Do it in a park behind a bush and hide everything come back later

I live in an apartment and already have over 500lbs of iron and bumpers, but still watched the whole thing too.
This dude is a national treasure in a time where you can't even get gym equipment there is one man showing you how to make it yourself hell yeah 💪
THer's something about this dude that reminds me of Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad)
massively. Nice guy/alpha hybrid fun dad.
He’s the one who knocks.
Check out Buff Dudes vs Breaking Bad on the Buff Dudes KZhead channel, think you'll enjoy it 😀
he is the danger....of gym plate manufactuers!
He looks like the dad character on Cherdleys
Your dad is easily cooler than both of the buff dudes combined.
That's cause he's got millions of buff dudes swimming around in his sack
he literally made them soo
He was 3 times cooler but it was becoming dangerous, so he created the 2 buff dudes.

G R your joking right 😂
Another thing you can add to the weight instead of spray paint is Truck Bed Liner Spray. It almost makes it like they are rubber weights
Smart
What else does that do for the concrete weights?
How many layers to make them like bumper plates?
InfiniteLoop Im not sure, I’ve been meaning to try it. But I was taking about it in a reddit post
@@renownwulf636 did you do it?
Wow. I did not expect to see him bench 200 pounds at the end lol. (Assuming he used the 2 75’s and a 45 bar)
It's that old workers strength. His muscles are probably like high tension steel wire rope at this point.

Yeah... I guess It's time we all start making concrete weight plates, the price of iron ones is insane, if you manage to find them...
I know it's just nuts. But nothing gonna stop a Buff dude 💪
Managed to get 400lbs of rogue bumper plates and a basic olympic bar for 400 bucks from a garage sale last week. Diamond in the rough

This method is excellent. I did almost exactly the same thing a few years ago, down to the screws in the wood to keep the form in place :) Notes: - Concrete Sonotubes: Waxed inside releases easy, can be used a few times. They come in various sizes. - 2" Abs pipe needs to be deeply scored on the outside surface (the part that needs to bind to the concrete), or it can pop out of the concrete plate - 1 7/8" Galvanized fence post makes a perfect bar for this system! Fill it with concrete so it can't bend (no flex, wide grip bar, makes it tough!) - Concrete is about 1/3 the density of iron, so your plates need to be BIG (ie ~18" like olympic plates), and thick. - Heat gun-flattened 3" abs pipe inserts as handles, so you can carry it like a normal plate. Love the buff videos!
Just came across free 4x4s that we’re used as sleepers for highway beams and I was worried about finding reasonably priced weights after i built my half rack. DIY Duke saves the day again
I love coming back to watch DIY Duke. Always an awesome character and so knowledgable!
I'm gonna weld a latch onto the mold. Show off lol. Love the enthusiasm. Great video
Just a friendly tip. Put diesel into a spray bottle and coat everything that the concrete will be touching. Get a thick coat on there then lightly rub it in with a rag. I promise you it will work better than any lubricant out there. I've been doing concrete my entire life and they don't make anything better than diesel for form oil
Thanks for the tip
heres me about to go buy release agent with my diesel saloon sitting outside full of the stuff hahaha thanks
Almost forgot: Do this on a scale! I get mine within about 200g of target, which is also the accuracy of the scale. I go a few hundred grams over, to account for the stuff that leaks out when you vibrate it, and for edge chips during early use.
so you just weigh the dry concrete I imagine? otherwise the gallon of water ends up drying out and making it lighter
@@rp003.0 The magic of concrete is that the water becomes part of the final material permanently through a process called cement hydration. Concrete doesn't cure by "drying out" it cures by incorporating the water. But your intuition is correct, there may be some change in the weight as it cures. A cubic yard of concrete will go from about 3900 lbs to 3600 lbs or so. In the case of DIY plates, it's really only important that they're "close" to the desired weight and balanced as a pair. The difference can be made up by adding fractional change plates.
This guy knows what he's doing! These DIY videos are the best!
Duke is too cool. I was seriously impressed. The weights looked great. They seemed tough as well. Great video.
Great vid, didn't expect they would be so strong. Maby an idea for follow up video, drop test or something to see how much they can handle. Shame to break them, but would be an entertaining video. Keep it up, fun and entertaining as always.
They use to have concrete plates back in the day. Even had plastic around them.... they will break easily has soon as the hit or drop on something hard. Funny video to some degree... but total waste of time for a project.
@@jonlanier_ Some people here are selling homemade concrete "barbells" and dumbells at $1/lbs approximately, that's even double the iron ones pre-covid
@@jonlanier_ Sounds like you didnt watch till the end, he drops it at full height? :-)
Yeah he did a drop test and it passed. Most people dont watch to the end, shame. But also on a hard floor you can just make up a couple of sand bags and a raised platform for deadlifting so there's no real excuse, most movements other than deadlift dont even require the weight to touch the floor except power clean row (floor to overhead, back down) And if you didnt want to use sandbags, you can make up a small trestle so your concrete plates have a 1/2 to full inch clearance of the floor and again use a raised platform to maintain the bar height of 9inches off the floor, or less (IPF standard limit)
lol buildings are made from concrete and steel, of course they are strong
I'll never be able to do this but its interesting to see him make such cool things
I like the fact that he gives it all. He doesn't just make something simple and quick. He explains every possibility so that we all could make one
This is seriously rad! dude has grit and makes this process look easy, thanks Duke
God bless the buff family. You guys are great! Hope all is well with ya buff dad.
The star of this video is Buff Cat.
Thanks diy duke! I like a lot doing diy stuff and your older and new videos have helped me a lot to learn this kind of stuff even if is not for lifting sometimes, blessings for you and the dudes 💪
This is easily the most definitive and helpful DIY concrete weight tutorial on KZhead --nice job, Duke! I made some of these for myself about a year ago but they're fragile because they don't have the same reinforcement. Looks like I'm off to the hardware store to make some proper ones!
Hey Duke, did you know you can improve the mechanical characteristics of concrete by adding extremely fine particles to the mix? Fine activated charcoal powder, at a concentration of 4% dry weight is sufficient to reap the benefits and activated charcoal is very very cheap. This addition gives a few interesting characteristics to the concrete like resistance to cracking when exposed to high temperatures and resistance to permeability by water. The reason it works is because when there's much smaller particles in the mix, they fit in between the spaces that the larger particles of cement just are not able to. This causes a lot of the of the porous voids that normally form in concrete to be filled and so you get a higher density concrete with improved mechanical characteristics. Superplasticizers can be added to the mix water to make the water wetter. When you use superplasticizer you can use less water in your mix and still achieve the same wetness in your mix, this will also have the effect of increasing density.
Thanks for the tips
Finally somebody on this subject! For me to do 200kg deadlifts I'd have to buy over 1000 euro in equipment, insane 🤦♂️
What a well made video! I don't happen to have 16" steel drums lying around, so I was glad when you pivoted at the end to mention buckets. Thanks DIY Duke!
DIY Duke always impresses. I like that all his stuff is heavy duty and practical, good reinforcement in whole material, and its no baby weight :). That pvc is great as you can cut it so easy even after its cured. I was searching for something to coat it with that would be a bit thicker than paint, and found out that some guys are using truck bed liner, and it sounds like a good idea.
I was literally thinking about doing this yesterday 😂
Me too, I don't have much in the way of plates because I wasn't serious about until a few months ago, but now I'm running out of plates I was thinking of going to a junkyard and pulling non-working engine parts might be a way to go
Sushant Bhargav yeah same, they are always listening
One day I will have my own house out of the big city and be able to do even more DIY stuff :D in my freetime.
I built my bench and squat rack following your videos. Looking forward to making my own weights now! Thanks!
I'm doing this this week. Got a new job during these tough times. Excited to be happy again
I lived in Brazil for a while. Literally every apartment and house has concrete weights. When the pedreiro (mason) is done on a job he dumps the rest into buckets like you showed or big cans and just puts a metal pipe connecting the two
He gives me a "i wish he was my dad!" type vibe.
I really appreciate the way Duke laid out expectations at the beginning, stuff like "I'll give you options for that later." It's really helpful for us folks with ADHD =)
Duke is the man. I'm building your power rack this weekend.
one day I'll be a rad dad like this guy 💪
I've been thinking about doing this because iron is so expensive. It's like DIY Duke can read minds.
Awesome video. I've definitely been considering making my own plates. I am an experienced woodworker but don't know jack about concrete, but I think with this video I should be able to pull it off. Thanks Duke! Stay buff!
This is Outstanding, I now can use my regular Iron 45s for inside and can make some concrete plates to use in my outdoor gym area. I knew concrete could be viable but I never tried it. You have given me the knowledge to do it. thank you for all your videos.
If you want to protect the edges, you could use some silicone sealant and it would help you very well!
DIY Duke smashing it with these DIY gym equipment videos! Amazing! Running out of superlatives for Buff Dad. Great content it's appreciated. Can you use fibres instead of the wire mesh inside the concrete? Or is the wire mesh a much better option? Cheers DIY Duke.
😀
fiber glass shards will make the weights damn near impossible to break. mix them in with the concrete while you add the water.
i LOVE this idea! Best concrete weights i've ever seen! Thank you so much for sharing :)
Yes, just realize daddy is BACK !!! Love your channel of building sir. Keep up the good content. God bless.

I need to move out of my appartment and get a house. Cant do shit living in a shoe box.
I live in a shoe box but managed to buy a basically abandoned and wrecked property for dirt cheap. Making it nice and liveable would cost me more than the property price but works great as a gym and workshop. Like a lil batcave
Do they rent garages?

@DIY Duke I love this man i cant wait till im in a house and build up my shop and build my own stuff. I also saw u tapping the side of it to get the air bubbles out wich works really but what i do is i use my reciprocating saw and take the blade out and use that on the sides of molds i find it works really well! keep up the great work and content
Great job Buff Daddy! They turned out really well. When do you start selling them?
You know the shipping would be just crazy 🤣
DIY Duke haha, indeed ... do you make 2.5s? Haha
DIY Duke hey Duke how much would shipping be on the molds...? I would like some 75s :)
I new before even hitting play, i was going to watch something special. There are a lot of videos out there about concrete weights, but you did it better! If you have the time, try to built concrete dumbells. I once builted a pair of 40lbs and i used some large plastic containers as molds, but i didn't took them off, instead i used a heat gun to shape them around the concrete and the finish was aesthetically better.
I think he has a video already that he made them if I’m not wrong.
I use metal 4 litre paint buckets to make my concrete dumbbells. I Don't even bother to take them off after.
I love watching all your gym ideas, even built my own power rack. I would like to see more ideas on concrete dumbbells bc my attempt failed
Wow Duke, I was a bit hesitant of how heavy a concrete plate set can be. But man, that plate is heavy. 6 of those , ie, 3 each side on a 45 pound barbell can reach upto 475 pounds. For Non-Americans like me, that is roughly equivalent to 230 kg, which is more than enough for regular home "gymmers". In fact you can be a beginner to medium intermediate powerlifter with those plates. Duke, you are awesome !
Damn I never thought you would actually lift the weight pretty impressive for you age sir
Thanks 😀💪
Yea I was impressed lol
"Imagine the catnip you could've bought me instead of wasting your time and money on this!", said Cat.
You don't need to be nervous. You have a lot to say and your words are worth listening to; thanks for your insight.
Love these how to vids, they teach you ingenuity! You should build a preacher curl station next! Would love to see your take on a wooden version!
Is it possible to cast your own metal plates from scrap metal? Thanks for the video and your time.
Yea, but very few have the equipment you need to melt and cast something that big.
It is if you have the right equipment. You'll need a huge forge and a huge crucible, and some sort of mold. I can imagine doing it with lead and tin, anything other than that would be impractical imo. Just use your common sense and don't breath in the fumes. And maybe coat the lead with something you don't want a lot of exposure.
Takes a whole lot of heat 2 impractical
Depending on how you forge it, you could also introduce cracks, fractures, and air pockets into the iron which could lead to rust or it even falling apart on you, which could be dangerous. Not saying it's impossible, just that there's much more to consider since it isn't just about heating up iron and pouring from a crucible or sticking it into a forge and pressing.
Bro my father never teach me nothing it's always drinkong I want to do all this things, adopt me lol, amazing I'm gonna do This too
become the dad you always wanted
You are literally a saint! thank you for this DIY Duke. Health and blessings to you Sir!

@@diyduke My uncle recently got diagnosed with Parkinson's, so I understand where you're coming from Duke. Keep killing it out there, bud. ;) Shakes don't stop a driven man/woman.
You guys are really showing your ignorance when it comes to distinguishing Parkinson’s from an essential tremor. Not all things that shake are Parkinson’s and an essential tremor can affect the hands, arms, voice, head, face, and trunk. How about y’all leave the diagnosing to doctors.
It is incredible to see your ability to create exercise equipment. Go job! But above all, the energy that you transmit in the process. Thanks to you, I may end up creating my own set of weights.
