The resemblance of that barbell compared to a real one is crazy, great work DiyDuke 💪
LoL those commercial barbells are just a replica of the barbell Buff Dad made back in the year of our lord
@@ragnarlodbrok1233 🤣🤣🤣
Thankyou so much 😀
@DYI Duke what kind of paint did you use?

I'm going to be as delicate as possible about this. My dads friend has a little bit of the shakes like Duke does, his hands shake a bit and his voice does too. Medical marijuana has helped significantly with the shakes. Again, I'm not trying to be mean, Duke is a gentleman and I want nothing but the best for him and his Buff Family.
respect
This is a thing everyone with that condition should definitely try. My aunties also had the same results and it improved their life so much
I know we are just messages on the internet. But i do hope the health of Buff Dad is okay. I too have worried for him.
God Bless the Buff Dudes and God Bless Buff Daddy aka Duke. Thank you all for the nice replies, again, no disrespect to the man, he's a legend amongst us.
Puff Dudes
Despite the fact that there's no way I'll be able to build any of your builts, I still enjoy watching them😋😀
Exactly I was commenting the same.. haha 😄😁
Me too. Besides, if I got it right by accident, I'd use far more than 200-300 dollars worth of time!
Yes you can. I was thinking the same thing and I wasn't going to bother trying but covid boredom got to me and I built a perfectly good half rack. I didn't realy plan it out and it looks pretty rough but it's sturdy and now I know I can build more stuff.
It's all about trying bud! Or trying to try even!
Didn't you hear what DIY Duke said? Yes you can!
I love the DIY series. Duke is getting buffer every video. I dig that.
PLEASE test the max weight capacity!
Hell yea I wanna see that
@@jaysworkshop8870 isn't the Olympic one 45lbs?
@@jaredpatterson1701 yea i believe so
This would be a pretty entertaining vid lol. Honestly if it can hold 225 I am all for it!
Ive been using just a 7' cold rolled steel rod for the last 3 months, thank god for this video! but anyways i have deadlifted 315lbs on it! It can easily hold that, there was a little bit of a bend but nothing crazy!
Can you make an adjustable bench? Because i know you heck can. So show us how to make one. And of course STAY 💪
@Undereating Undersleeping but what if your so strong you need all the plates on the bar and theres not enough to put under the bench..... o_O
@@Kay8B then cut up a 2x6 and use that.
His tremors honestly breaks my heart. He seems like an amazing Dad!
I'm too much in awe of how clever Duke is to remember the instructions he gave me to build anything he shows us. It's going to take about 100 rewatches to even try looking for the materials. My indolence aside, this channel has to be one of the best resources on YT for fitness enthusiasts looking to challenge and motivate themselves to do better and learn new skill sets related to their passion for fitness. Very grateful to have it. All the best to Buff Duke and his entire Buff family. Be well mate. :)
Me: I want to build a cheap gym at home Duke: I've got you covered
Going to start building my bench tomorrow based on your video! I truely hope you'll never stop making video's, I always feel like a kid on christmas when I see you have a new video out! Keep it up, sir!
Thanks a lot for these vids DIYDuke! building a home gym is honestly one of the most satisfying things I've ever built!
Just found this guy online. I’m so glad I did. COVID is really messing our gym access. DIY makes so much sense for those of us that can’t afford the hardcore expensive equipment. Keep it up man. You rock !
Love it, Duke! That's slick as it can be. Thanks for the share. Got to try this.
Been watching all the DIY guides since i finally have a place where i can build and thought to myself "damn, i can get all of this done, but i wish he had a barbell guide" and boom, you upload one today You're awesome buff dad
I’m so happy I found you , my dad didn’t teach me any of this stuff and you really help me out I’m going to try a lot of your projects man thank you
Always a pleasure seeing one of your videos Duke. Watching you work is like watching an artist making a mosaic.
DIY Duke is so gotdamn alpha
Frickin awesome Duke!
All of these DIY videos are amazing content. Showing average people how they can build their own gym equipment for a fraction of the cost. There really is no excuses if you have the desire to lift, you will find a way. Awesome video.
Soon as my wife and I get over this covid sickness I'm starting a home gym with this! Thanks DIY Duke 💪 🙂
Awesome Project. Thanks for sharing and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
"What's a few inches? You're still gonna tap that."
I'm pretty sure that most guys would pay at least $200 if they could get an extra 2 inches.
@@ljm37 Of course. Even if it takes me 10 years of living under a bridge to save $200
Already built all you have shown us. And loving it! Waiting to add this to the mix
Building a home gym right now and it's like this video was made for me. Thank you so much BuffDad!
noway this guy is the one who taught me how to remove popcorn ceilings.
Tips for when Tapping the Holes Use a few drops of Tapping Oil before you begin by placing it on the tip of the Tap to smoothen the process Then as you proceed do 4 to 6 rotations clockwise then 2 to 3 counter clockwise to loosen up the burs that will begin to form while you're making the thread This same Tapping Oil can be used when Drilling as well to make it go by easier or quicker keeping both the work piece and the drill bit cool
skyydiver72 I kinda wondered when/if someone was gonna make a joke like that lol
Much respect sir!! Keep it up. Love when those new vids drop. Im always impressed with the builds.
Love this guy. He makes all his diy vids easy to understand. Awesome job buddy
"Cheap" *chuckles in third world country*
It's actually still fairly obtainable in many "third world" countries (at least those that produce steel for domestic market ofc), it's definitely not cheap even in some developed countries but being able to make it for 20% (or even less) of the price of a cheapest olympic barbell around is a really good possibility. PS This one isn't exactly like the olympic one, you'd have to replace those couplings with ball bearings so sleeves can freely rotate - it's really good for your joints! If you wanted to make a simple barbell you literally need a steel rod, something to block playes from sliding down the shaft (anything, just make sure it's properly welded), grip tape (unless you can make the knurling yourself) and some thick wire for the collar (if you're only bench pressing/deadlifting/squatting and doing it solo tbh it's safer without them).
@@Sk0lzky lots of Olympic bars lack bearings, and most are bronze or similar rather than ball. I am interested in how the sleeves would hold up to the beating of iron plates though.
@@DrewLSsix yeah there's that alternative kind of connector but the point is to let plates rotate freely to reduce strain on joints during explosive movements - ball bearings are just the easiest way to do it imo
8:56 - The Buff Dad montage we all need.
Buff Duke videos are the best. I don't have a scarcity of gym equipment but they're so fun to watch.
your dedication and ambition make everything possible DIY Duke!!!
Perfect!.. thank you “Maestro”
This is amazing Duke If I may make a suggestion try your hand at a simple Hack Squat setup
Great video Duke! Could you show us a way of doing the knurling for this?
Awesome no-weld Olympic weightlifting bar. Thanks for this information Duke !!!!
I love these videos! Thank you very much for sharing this, DIY Duke!
It was said during times of Sparta the warrior society flourishing - If a local village was in trouble, that sending ONLY one Spartan General was enough to make the entire village believe they could fight and achieve victory. The mere presence of a Spartan Warrior General was enough to make mere mortal men believe they could fight. Duke is that Spartan General! I know nothing about metal work, nothing about measuring and I don't even have cutting tools. After watching this, I believe I can do it... Thank you Spartan Duke! We salute you!
9:14 i can say with great confidence that i cant do everything you can do🤣🤣🤣 thats why u are diy duke!!!
This is perfect! Exactly what I've been looking for! I have been looking for a decent used bar at a decent enough price for months for my garage gym. I had thought through a number of methods of how to DIY, but I wasn't confident enough of weight capacity. I couldn't click fast enough when I saw this today! Nice! Thanks Duke for this! I would also so love to see the testing of the max weight load limit before bending, as I'm hoping to squat and dead lift (nothing crazy, just reasonable amount of weight)! Thanks again guys!!
Great clear directions! Thank you.
Buff dad got buff 💪😂great vid be good to see the max weight capacity, I built the buff dudes squat rack and I am very happy with it I never done anything like that before but the video was so well made step by step it would be hard to go wrong thanks for the videos 💪
It's crazy. Before COVID, I bought some bars for $10 a piece. Now everyone is selling them for $100+. I'm still holding onto mine, though, because they are worth more than money. But it's badass, this video, I hope many people are able to get inspired to build this and get buff in their yard like I do.
Genius. I look forward to how you will get the sleeves to spin if and when you do an improved version. But I look forward to trying this one. Thank you
Hey duke! I finally just completed the barbell. Been cranking out a bunch of concrete weights from one quik tube for it. I'm really excited to work out at home and I wanna thank you for all the great content. I hope you are doing great
To get closer to a 45lb barbell you could fill the middle of the pipe with concrete or weld a smaller one in the middle for added strength aswell. Just a thought for some of you motivators out there.
Even better, just add more of those inner collars underneath the exhaust tube for additional weight.
Imagine how much money I'd save if I actually did these things😂
Building it for fun would be interesting but if you're going to lift heavy weights with this you might wreck your joints as the bar doesn't roll. Normal bars are supposed to roll to minimize the torque you'd have to deal with otherwise.
@@FlyingUnosaur you don't "wreck your joints" with non rolling sleeves, it just increases the difficulty. You can buy strongman axle bar with non rolling sleeves and 450kg rating from strengthshop which is used at competition level, the athlete attempts to manually roll the bar up their chest and then straighten their posture when the bar is above the head locked out. So it helps to have decent grip in order to control the bar rolling/resist too much roll in the hands
@Patrick Bateman yes because companies have the proper machinery and steel hardening methods, no because to do it yourself is proof you don't need a company (helpful for when it's out of stock) and an achievement. I built 4 of my own sawhorses to use as a bed frame. They have lasted over 5 years, and i'm not a light person xD Yes it is easier to use a company, that's what money is for, but to do it for yourself makes it more special and customisable too ie if you want 18 inch sleeve length on a 7ft bar instead of 15 that is normally for sale, you can incorperate any features you want like that into the build. Yeah it's easier to buy stuff, but sometimes you can't get exactly what you want off the shelf, and you save money doing it yourself. Pros vs cons of buy vs DIY lol
Don't forget about the hrs it's gonna cost you to make it. Time is essentially money. 😉
@@Goenie2005 that build should take about an hour for most. Then the trip to the store.......so 2 hours? Unless you are making serious bank, this will save you money. I doubt a lot of people are flocking to his videos that have a few thousand extra just sitting around for gym gear.
This is so great! The gyms are open where I am but if they close up again I am using all your videos to make my home gym!
You are the man DUKE! I love your enthusiam!
I thought him being their dad was a joke before now I realize its real.
Seriously? thats kinda sad
Buff Fans: Love this DIY Duke barbell, but it's way easier to just buy one COVID-19: Hold my beer
Omg yasss! Good one
*hold my corona*
Thank you Buff Dad for the excellent video guide! Learning to weld & fabricate is definitely on my bucket list but, you inspired me to make things work. Managed to combine 2 pieces of equipment last night to make a pretty slick weight rack to attach to my power cage. No more plates all over the floor! Hope you're doing well and staying buff 😊
Too cool, Duke. I'm planning to build your half rack before the summer is over. Cheers, brother!
The only thing I’d do different is put two holes in the coupling for the set screws on direct opposite sides of each other. That way you can put two set screws in each coupling and you’ll be able to centre the coupling to the bar
It's possible that he did that. I came to the comments looking for why he needed 8 set screws when it looked like he only used 4. But if he put 2 holes per coupling that would explain the 8 set screws.
Can you weld the couplings instead of putting set screws?
Ignacio Ortiz sure you can just make sure your bar is centred in the coupling before you tack your weld
coffeecookie do I center it with nails and then weld?
Ignacio Ortiz I mean you might be able to use them as spacers in between the coupling and the bar if that’s what you’re getting at. Personally I’d just centre it by eye hold and tack
hey duke. question!:) where do you shop your supplies? having a hard time finding the cold rolled steel. and the set screw collars. clean barbell sir! nodds
I suggest that you make yourself made with a turner, melting the aluminum.
Great work, Duke!
Keep up the good work Duke, I hope you bring out more content more frequently! Much love
I love this channel! Duke is really the best, but since I'm Italian it's a pain converting in cm/meters.. damn 'mericans! :)
@J G Yes I've been doing it for a while since I've made some of the DIY projects, with a converter it's piece of cake, still it's not fun! Convert to the metric you infidels rebels!
Same here Mario :)
Is it possible to do this with bearings instead? Also, that bar has no knurling but I assume you can get that done in a shop or even do it yourself with some patience. Great vid, I'll definitely look rewatch for reference if I decide to make one of my own.
Non skid tape.
if u want to do an easy curl bar you could really just take an BMX handels because they are almost the same
@@palabrajot505 I've tried some of that on a pullup bar, but it was too rough at first (will take some use until it doesn't eat away at your skin). It might also detach. I wouldn't recommend it unless you really can't do anything else
@@billaros1000 Oh, I have a brand new Texas Power Bar, with very good knurling, more aggressive than what you'll find in most commercial gyms. I was just throwing out a suggestion to help you. If it doesn't work for you, I'm afraid that I'm all out of ideas.
Love this guy. Excellent build!
Hey man. I was having a bad day and was just looking for something that would interest me because I watched all my other videos and I found this and it has given me so much to do and work on and disract myself. I really appreciate what you do. Please keep it up.
Why is my guys hands getting shakier? Sending prayers your way Duke!
A lot of people just have that with age especially when they’re using a lot of force. It doesn’t mean they have Parkinson’s it’s just an age thing.
It happens when you do a lot of manual labor. From years of working with your hands they start to shake. My dad has this spent over 30 years on construction.
@@phillipgulchuk8407 especially mid work, it even happens to me and I'm 25. But in my case it can actually be parkinson's, grandpa had it (also had many years of hard manual labour behind but it was definitely parkinson's) :v But yeah in Duke's case it looks like essential tremors, iirc nobody really knows why they happen but they're neurological
he speaks on it .. power rack build near the beginning
my grandpa has something (they thought it was parkinsons, but not sure anymore) where he gets dizzy, his hands shake, etc. He's been a handyman his whole life so I wonder if it has to do with inhaling certain fumes from all the tools he's used
Knurling and bearings so the sleeves can spin. Now we're at 200 dollars again.
Not to mention the time that it took to build and the investment in machinery. No ROI. 🤷♂️
can thosed be added in a DIY situation also? or not?
@@haczabim if DIY means you have a lathe then yes.
@@NotnaRed Right. I watched this video with my dad, he knows about this and said the same. He also said the piece that joins the sleeves has to be done, and that's not shown in the video. UNLESS THEY SELL THEM ALREADY LIKE THAT.
@@haczabim i new to this stuff and want to know what exactly do you mean. which part must be done to join the sleeves?
Great job. Love your videos and the way you help your boys is awesome.

Really awesome video! I liked the breakdown. Definitely will need to try and build this
one of the coolest videos yet! I wish there was a way to use similar resources to get the job done out here in the villages of Mozambique
Perfect job my friend!!! God bless your hands!
Bravo. Amazing build. You guys are really creative.
You are so good at this.
A heads up to those attempting this... would add if you are going to make one of these make sure that you measure your ID of the weight plates you have with calipers....they have a lot of variance 2.0" will not fit a lot of them and bumper plates inner collars might have slight deformations out of round that need to be compensated for. I am not sure what 2" exhaust pipe OD is exactly but Most Barbells are more like 1.95" OD or 50 mm (1.96") on the sleeve, a lot of custom bars you see will use schedule 40/80 1.5" pipe (thats ID) which will give an OD of around 1.9 and then you have lots of clearance for plates....but some collars are too loose! Great parts list and build for people to DIY it up without needing much tools!
Came for the barbell, subscribed for the legend. Loved the positive vibes!
Great stuff, going to scale down this method to make a pair of Olympic dumbbell handles 👍 thanks Duke
You're awesome at building things I love watching your videos, thanks for sharing all of them!

Realy cool Idea. Nice Work!
That barbell looks amazing! I already bought 3 Olympic bars from peddler's mall for 25.00 a piece. I turned one of them into an 1.5 in axle bar weighs 49 lb. I plan on making one into a 2 in axle bar. After seeing how awesome you made one i feel the need to build my own olympic bar now. Thank you for the video DIY Duke!
Duke...you are a god. Thank you for this!
Great job Duke!

I finished up mine a few days ago. Used spray can truck bed liner for the bar to add grip. I also sprayed the marking in on the bar so I know where to put my hands. Set a new PR on bench with it (yes I took it to the gym). would never thought about this without your video. Thanks for the inspiration.
Wow, that's really good to hear and great ideas. Thankyou for sharing that 💪

your a clever good man!!keep up the good work of keeping things cheap
You are a legend, sir. Thank you for sharing this knowledge with us.
I actually did this when quarantine shut down all the gyms. My method was a bit different but this is pretty sweet.
Awesome work! Love all the clear details and the music! I'm here in Laos and I was thinking of ordering my barbell from Thailand because it's cheaper, but I already made my squat rack to a specific width to match the barbell they have at a wholesale fitness equip. shop here. But the one at the shop is so expensive...and when i looked at the ones in Thailand, they didn't match the specs on the handle width. The bad thing is I made it without enough leeway. So I need to make it. Thanks so much for this!
