The idea of her thinking it would be OK to go public with killing a puppy speaks to her judgement as much as her callousness towards life. How could she possible expect it would be OK to say. "I shot a puppy." to the general public...a puppy for God's sake. This woman should not be in charge of an outhouse.
Noem thought it was OK because she knows that most of Trump's voters are cruel people who would probably admire her for having the "courage" to shoot a dog in the head and brag about it. The ability to torture and murder an innocent creature is something she admires and believes that Trump and his followers admire as well. And she is correct. Give it a week or two, FOX News and their viewers will come around and start praising her for this. Trump will too and then choose her as his VP. Noem knows Trump, she knows his followers, she knows exactly what they want.
She seems like a MTG brand of nuts. She's even gotten herself banned from entering any of the larger reservations due to her increasingly hostile attitude toward the tribes in her state. So the governor of SD is effectly a persona non grata in 17% of her own state!
She just outed herself as a sociopath. Not that we couldn't already tell.
She should be in it!

Well I suppose “needing“ euthanasia is kind of an unclear state, it‘s possible that they had all three had been getting progressively worse, maybe one still had a few good months, maybe another was a few months overdue and when they had the doctor come they decided out of practicality to kill them all. If the horses were very close to one another it might have actually been a good call, because they didn‘t have to suffer the loss of a friend. I think we can‘t judge her actions too harshly, honestly, because unless we‘re moral vegetarians/vegans we‘re likely to be hypocritical. When it comes to my food I tend to think that it‘s fine to give an animal a good life and then kill it. I do think we can judge her character harshly, though, because she killed the dog and the goat out of frustration, spite and anger, not for economical reasons. Probably not the type of person we want to be in charge of anything meaningful.
I'm a vegan for health reasons, but I still think what Noem did was awful.

I think there's a lot of potential there for a "Kristi Noem as Jack Nicholson's "Joker"" meme in there. You know, "shake-a-paw with a lethal joy-buzzer" stuff; "WHOA-HO, WE GOT A LIVE PUP HERE!!". Brooding over TV coverage of 45's psychopathy while methodically strangling a basket of 6-week-old Golden Retrievers; "Wait'll they get a load of me!".
We adopted a dog a dog in 2019 that was 26 months old in January 2019. She had been in two other homes in the 90 days prior to us being approved to adopt her. She had aggression issues they told us, so they were concerned. We told them we have trained dogs all our lives. Well she bit me one time in training her, but she is still here after five years. She is now so gentle and snuggly , trained to many hand signals, whistle signals and voice commands. All it takes is time and the right approach, don't try to fix everything at once. Food or the lack thereof obviously was an issue with her at prior homes (gained 14 pounds after coming here), hair is longer coat is shinier. Our grandson for a living, works with people and their supposed untrained dogs, to train them right. Noem shot a smelly goat too. Daughter has goats on her farm, some ranked in the top ten in the USA. Male goats pee on their face to attract the female when they come into their cycle. Don't understand it and don't want to; works for the goats so let them go for it.
It is nice to hear stories like yours. What many people do not understand is that when one takes in an animal as a pet, they are making a commitment for 20 years or so. That means through thick and thin, and everything in between. At the very least turn the animal into a shelter so they have a chance to live. Preferably a no-kill or private shelter.
Would you say that training a cat is possible well after being 2 years old?

Noem's defense is so disgusting. My husband was raised on a dairy farm and was used to having to put down animals WHEN THEY WERE OLD AND INVALID. Noem also put down a goat because it was "mean and nasty" and apparently smelled bad. Not cause it was old or needed to be done but because she's a monster.

I used to say that the world is divided between those who could put down their own dog, and those who couldn't. Meaning that some people are better able to deal with harsh realities and take responsibility. (A juvenile belief for sure.) These people are getting so very very weird and disturbed.
Why is it ok in your eyes to kill animals that are old? I can tell you that living on a dairy farm Animals are killed for far more reasons than they just got old. I knew there was a reason I was disgusted by Steven Segal
if it was 14 months old, it was not a puppy, it was a teenage dog. Even large dogs should at that point look pretty close to their "finished" versions and they´re likely already fully capable of reproduction. Dogs are a lot of work and some breeds are much more work still. We got a dog half a year ago and she´s lovely, but I still feel overwhelmed at times with how much attention she needs. If I didn´t love dogs as much as I do, I could imagine growing resentful over time. Not the dog´s fault, obviously, that woman is still awful, just maybe in a different way. Also, that dog was likely in puberty, where rebellious behaviour is absolutely expected. No one who has done any research on dogs should be surprised by this. Still it´s no wonder that this is the most typical age range at which families not headed by psychos end up giving their first dog away. But there´s just no way you can look at a dog at that age and make any sort of judgement as to how "trainable" it will end up being.

I'm a retired dog trainer. You do not just turn an untrained dog loose and expect it to hunt over it. It takes a long time to teach them to be steady. Apparently Noem is an idiot as well as guilty of animal abuse. Plus, my goat farmer friend doesn't keep a male goat on the property because they stink. She brings one in for a a couple weeks of wild goaty love with her does, and then sends him back to his owners. No need to kill it in the puppy pit Kristy.
I understand goats can be "de-stank" by freezing their scent glands, with dry ice, when they're babies.

We literally have laws now about animal cruelty, and this woman, nay, this THING, put it in a book. She could have easily rehomed that puppy. Any loving family would’ve taken that puppy 🤬

I am really saddened for that poor puppy just learning about the world. It's all HER fault if the puppy did some things she didn't like.
