  • I'm 60 years old now and I remember better times. How about we go back to the standardization of the boat and electronics for each competitor like Bassmaster used to do? In the good old days, each angler was assigned a boat that was equal to every other angler, so it was a competition between anglers on the basis of skill with a very level playing field. May the best angler win. Now, it's who has the most sponsors with the best equipment based on monetary resources. Money over skill. I'm a lifetime member of Bassmaster, but I don't recognize this organization anymore. It's all about the money and nothing about the skill or the chase between man and fish. It makes me sad and I'm tired of being told I'm behind the times. Maybe the old ways truly are better. We will see a consequence for this change and it's not for the better.

  • Good job Randy. I've seen a lake close to my house turned into a neighborhood for millionaires. The trees were removed all the down to the shoreline. Wildlife has pretty much been removed. As for boat pricing, until people stop buying 30, 40, 50+ thousand dollar boats they'll keep selling them at that price. When I retired I bought an aluminum Tracker 175 txw 60 hp. I was afraid I wouldn't adjust to not being able to fly across the lake. After two months, I sold my fiberglass boat and after 4 years I have no complaints. I can fish four or five trips b4 having to fill up again.

Nearly 7 pounds and at a 90* bend in the river, 19 feet on a berkley power bait, Black in color. The weed beds were crucial and I had luck with tubes and shad imitators. Big crappie and big bluegills too! Lots of fun catching gills, sunfish etc. easily boating 150 a day. It’s been a decade since I’ve fished it, I do miss it though. When I first fished it with dad, (1981) there were no shad in it. How they got in there is a mystery to me but I’ve heard rumors lol. Best of luck fishing and be safe! Cheers!!

  • It's going to take an organization to establish a tournament series with limits.

    @woody65536@woody6553613 күн бұрын
    • Exactly! I like the idea of going old school with limits on bass boat lengths and HP along with some electronics limits. I know the bass boat costs is out of control as well as the trucks, baits and even tackle in general. The last time I talked with a bass boat dealer about who actually pays for these 70-100k boats he said it was usually older retired men. I disagree… maybe 10 years ago but these days I see plenty of middle aged men who have gone $150k in debt to go and catch bass in local tournaments and try to win $500 or less. It’s nuts and even aluminum boats are 45k or higher if you get one rigged up. I checked out years ago on bass tournaments and I enjoy bass fishing for fun now. I did the tournament thing for 25 years and it was fun but I wouldn’t do it these days. I’m not going to spend the money required to get rigged up. I’m 60 and do pretty good for myself but the changes in professional bass tournaments turned me off years ago. Plus now I play more golf and it’s hard to believe but golf is waaaaay cheaper 😂 I guess that happens with generations of sports changing hands but technology has made this entire industry less desirable to me. I do love the newer trolling motors and talons/power poles but FFS is bad for the sport imo. In the end it’s going to take a new tournament organization or major (costly) changes with all the corporations involved now to change this. I’m not worried because I can fish anytime I want and I choose to not watch the tournaments on tv anymore because of FFS. I think the loss in viewership and sales will take a toll eventually. Maybe they are making more with the younger crowds tuning in? I wont put that much research effort into my opinion on them losing money over time because most people I talk to or I listen to agree with Randy on this.

  • I'm 68 years old and Randy I agree with the things that you are talking about, I was raised and live in lexington Tennessee and we have 7 brwda lakes and now 2 of those 7 lakes are now surrounded by houses that have totally ruined the serenity of the very reason I began bass fishing back 50 years ago,I personally use forward facing sonar when I fish, but I can totally understand how it is ruining the fishing for future of professional bass fishing, older angler's don't need it to start with and younger angler's couldn't catch a limit of bass without it, and that is my 2 cents worth!

That is the planning commission (I used to serve on that as well) and with the City Counsel (yes- ima former CC President) Those last two have everything to do with development - not the Chamber. Now if you want to talk bass tournaments - that’s more appropriate

  • Been subscribed for a few years now. Have only been taking bass fishing serious during that time and kept with you and a few others on KZhead. Everyone has there opinions on everything because everyone has different experiences. I'm on both sides of the fence on FFS, but the one thing that got me was the bass pro tour that came to Cayuga lake last year before our season officially opened. I live less than hour and fish it a lot now and was more upset and disappointed about the concept of professionals and mlf promoting conservation of the species and then to watch that statement crumble live was pretty eye opening. I'm glad no professional tournaments are being held this year and want to think that was part of it but not enough stink became of it. Locally nothing was even said about what actually happened on the news or articles. Conservation should be front and center and not killing what they say they are promoting. We won't see the impacts from last year until 3-5 years or more with the larger breeders and will be interesting to follow

  • Forward facing sonar the issue in a sport where catch and release could be mandatory? Sure I like the tournaments to be on a level playing field and would support baselining the equipment to include no detail sonar, BUT when fishing time on the water per year is less than a week outside of a camping trip I have no issue discounting large amounts of unproductive water. Go camping and want to pack light, eating fish…yep nice to set aside the mre’s. I have always caught and released fish. Forward facing sonar seems to bring in an aspect of sight fishing below 10’ of water that is appealing. Slot limits, numbers, trophy waters are all part of conservation. I don’t hate on lake front property just make a greenspace requirement. Hope to have a big house on the hill amount trees with a lake view, who doesn’t?

  • Tournament fishing jumped the shark in 1999 when BASS upped the hp from 150 to 250. The economy was hot at the time and the decision was based on greed. At this point I think revisiting other bans from the past would put a better prospective to the call for a ffs ban. Fight for Jets, Tunnels, Fly Rods and Live Bait!

I'm shocked by the desire to just "catch big ones" at all costs. It's anything but sportsmanlike. I'll sit in my cheap kayak and enjoy nature. I'll never fish a tournament for sure.

  • I am listening and agreeing with a sense of nostalgia as I glance across the room at my 1954 South Bend Smoothcast direct drive reel on its 4’ metal rod with original Crazy Crawler still tied to its braided line. I have a newspaper clipping from winning my first tournament with an 11 1/2 pound bass when I was 14 (1960). The local downtown hardware store sponsored a weekly “tournament” with bream, bass, and shellcracker categories. If you caught a nice fish, you took it in to be weighed and at week’s end the store owner announced the winners and awarded each $5.00 in merchandise. Actually, you could get a nice little bag of stuff for five bucks then. I appreciate you taking a public stance on the matter, but as with so many other changes in the evolution of sports, I doubt anything can be done to reverse the trends. As for waterfront development, until recently I owned property in middle Georgia and someone asked why I did not fish the large reservoirs nearby, I explained that I grew up paddling while fishing in serenity, casting a weedless Hawaiian Wigler into grass beds or skipping a rubber worm up under overhanging willow trees while watching birds, snakes, raccoons, and an occasional deer. Tossing lures under peoples docks in front of their 4000+ square-foot waterfront homes just isn’t my cup o’ tea.

  • Bass fishing is owned by corporations now. There is no turning back. My suggestion would be start your own league but that comes with smaller payouts and only allow sponsors in that actually have something to do with bass fishing. I don’t like ffs but nothing is going to stop technology you used a high tech computer to record this video and you probably use a smartphone and GoPro and any other technology advancement. Braided line, better lures, faster reels. Until you and others refuse to fish the tournaments they will continue to have them. Nothing is going to stop it.

  • As awesome as competition can be to watch, when stuff goes pro as making stuff profitable makes production so important it breaks what makes things special. It typically changes the sport to the point of degrading it. As a fly angler (who loves bass fishing, it's not all trout :D), there are techniques in competitve fly fishing that really make the sport pointless. Competive fly fishing is almost entirely euro-nymphing(Explained below), and while I won't say it's a skill-less, it's barely fly fishing, and the sport is more about who finds the hot spot on the river first. 85% luck and 15% technical skill. Euro-nymphing is a great technique, it catches tons of fish, but I'm not on the water to catch 10-20+ fish. It's cool when it happens, but I like exploring new areas, and figuring out what the fish in that water want to take a fly is 70% of the fun. Euronymphing: Is fishing a heavily weighted nymph, typically a large heavy bead on a hook, basically a small weighted jig head, near the bottom of the stream/river and instead of a bobber (indicator) you use a gradiated leader to tell when a fish bites. Most euronymphers will use 20-25 feet of leader, and it's pretty rare the actual fly line leaves the tiptop of your rod. Most serious euro nymphers will use specific reals designed just for euro nymphing, and an extra long rod designed specifically for it. A lot fly anglers will dabble with it and/or use it, sometimes just bringing a euronymphing leaders, with them and a standard rod/real. It certainly works,

We are about due for a new Ray Scott to come along and pick us up by the seat of our pants and point us in a new direction with new structures and ideas. How about a composite video of our top 5 bass to show at the way in each day. Each lake has a one month period where there is no fishing for bass to destress the spawn, There are plenty of lakes south to north to do this effectively. these are BS ideas just for grins. The right promoter that believes in Bass Fishing will come along one day. 🤞
