Adapting Sony AF Lenses on Nikon Z Cameras, Megadap ETZ21 PRO -RED35 Review
Since mirrorless cameras arrival, photographers have been adapting lenses, from vintage to modern, across different platforms. Magadap's latest ETZ21 PRO is a game changer, giving you full power and compatibility when using ANY Sony E mount lenses on Nikon Z cameras. This gives Nikon photographers access to not only Sony's lens catalogue, but also third party lenses, instantly boosting the appeal to the Nikon platform. According to the Megadap manual, you should be removing the lens from the adapter first, rather than removing both the lens and the adapter from the camera at once. From the manual: "If users wish to use multiple E-mount lenses with ETZ21 Pro, when changing lenses, please turn off the camera and then remove ONLY the E-mount lenses originally being mounted on the camera. Removing both the lens and adapter may cause adapter malfunctions."
Wait that means you now can adpat the whole sigma e mount catalogue :o That is crazy
Man, you just made my day! Crazy stuff, thank you for sharing
Thanks for sharing this man! Awesome vid, super helpful 👍
Great review, Jimmy. The e mount sigma i series lens will look beautiful on the Zf.
Sigma lenses are known to have problems with this adapter.
Great review. Just picked up the Zf. Looking to augment my set up with Zeiss Batis lenses. The ETZ21 Pro will do the trick.
Always educational
So now you can adapt near everything on a Nikon Z camera: - Nikon F to Nikon Z - Canon EF to Nikon Z - Sony E to Nikon Z - Fuji FX to Nikon Z (Boryoza AF adapter)
I just wish there was a Minolta A-Mount to Z-Mount adapter.
@@doogiehamthere is A mount to E mount, then E to Z 😅
Loved the video. So would the aperture ring function on the Sony 40mm F2.5 and the Nikon ZF??? Looking for a fun travel camera like the ZF but would like aperture ring too. I want to take my time and dial in the settings for each photo and enjoy the process.
I can’t wait to try my Batis lenses.
Did someone say Megadeth? Count me in! For sure I know I know you said Megadap but my brain wants to hear Megadeth. As a product the adapter sounds great. Thank you for kindly showing it.😮
LOL, you made me laugh!
Have You tried the Small compact G lenses like the 24mm, 40mm with Aperture Rings? I had a viwer on my channel ask if it work on his Zf. I have the old ETZ11 adapter and it doesn't work with my Zf, Zfc and Z9. Works on all of the other Z Cameras that I own DX and FX. Cheers!
When I first got the adapter it didn’t work at all on my Zf, but they released a firmware and fixed it
Those little g lenses from Sony, the 24, 40 and 50 f2.5 would go really well with the zf, small lenses with a more retro feel on the zf....
Yes, and they all have aperture rings too!
@@Red35Photography yes! Perfect for it, get a nice hoage retro hood for it too and you'd be confused for an old Nikon film shooter 😂
Hey just ordered the Sony adapter and the small 24mm Sony G lens from B&H photo, should have it tomorrow will let you know how it works out. James Mlodynia.
@@jamesmlodynia8757 if the auto focus is still as good, that could be a great little combo
@@jamesmlodynia8757how is it working? Does video AF work well?
That is the great of the Z-mount. Nikon Z-munt has a very small flange range making it able to adapt all formats.
Thanks Jimmy for the great overview. I have the Sony 20-70/4 and a bunch of Sigma I primes that I’m looking forward to adapting. I’m considering buying the new Sony G FE 70-200/4 macro lens because Nikon doesn’t have an equivalent lens that has half-macro capability. However, it is quite pricey and I’m a bit hesitant to buy it to use solely on an adaptor which may fail after extended use. I’m going to have to give it further thought.
Thanks for the cautionary reminder. I read that as well but it seems more awkward than putting it on the lens first.
Cool, let me know how you get on.
How quickly does the lens focus with this adapter e.g for fast moving subjects?
Hows the hitrate vs. Moving subjects when moving towards the camera?
Well, when it works, it actually works well. I bought a Viltrox APS-C lens and despite assurances of compatibility since the last upgrade, it doesn't work. There has been no response from support to my query about this either. My Tamron 17-70 2.8 also only works to a limited extent. Depending on the firmware version, it either drains the battery when the camera is switched off or the VR does not work. I have tried both on the Z fc and on the Z f.
I have many Sony lenses that I could mount on a Nikon body, can the adapter be left attached permanently to the Nikon body? Is it easy to attach and detach different lenses with the adapter already mounted on the camera body?
You don't specifically mention it so I have to ask whether the optical stabilization used in some E-mount lenses will survive the adaptor, especially on the Z-mount APS-C models, none of which have IBIS? There are too few Nikon stabilized lenses, unfortunately.
Lens IS will continue to work independently unless you switch it off on the lens. With the case of Zf, which as IBIS, you can only use it on its own but not both together if that makes sense.
@@Red35Photography Thx for quick answer. I went to Megadap website and they don't explain it any more clearly. I was also disappointed to learn there that "Viltrox and Yougnuo lenses are currently not supported." Let's hope some future Megadap firmware updates will fix this, especially in the case of Viltrox..
I have a Z50 (no ibis) . The VC on my Tamron 70-180 works 'through' the Megadapt.
The 50 1.8S is posibly the best lens i have ever used. Missing out on that to go with that drab sony .. if you add the price of the adapter it s the samy money. What i m interested in is the 35 1.4GN, 50 1,4 GM adapted, not that pedestrian 1.8 Also, you can buy an FTZ and use the, ahem, nikon 50 1.4G or 58 1.4G :D
Of course. The adapter is only a layer that allows me to get other Sony E mount lenses that I like. I personally fancy the Sony Zeiss 50mm 1.4 and the 35mm Distagon 1.4. I used these optics in my Leica M and liked the look of them. FTZ adaptor is chunky though.
@@Red35Photographyyou should use Sony or Sigma lenses that has aperture ring, something that’s lacking in Z system.
eine Art Zwischenring, der den Abstand zum Objektiv vergrößert - wie kann da die Fokussierung auf unendlich funktionieren?
It focuses fine to infinity. The adaptor works with the difference in flange distance between Nikon and Sony camera, that one millimetre.
Amazing, thank you Jimmy, do you test with leica m lens on Nikon ZF? I have Dual Range and not sure if it works on Nikon ZF. please showcase more performance of leica lens on ZF pls. Full support your channel
Does the adapter undermine the effectiveness of the Nikon’s VR?
No the IBIS works flawlessly
@@Red35Photography tThanks for letting me know. In the past i tried adapting Canon ef lenses to Nikon Z using the Fringer brand adapter, and that adapter product didn’t seem to let the lens’s IS work.
Ein sehr guter Gedanke Sony E an Nikon Z zu adaptieren. Bei vollem AF. Bin gespannt auf das Video.
So Sony E mount can be adapted, with AF, but not Nikon AF-D lenses. 😢
how about use raw file at software? 。how to fix lens profile? I use Dxo PhotoLab 5..影raw檔案啲軟件開唔開到㗎?鏡頭檔案點修正?我用緊Dxo PhotoLab 5。
RAW software uses lens profile to correct the lens, that is the case in Lightroom and Adobe Camera RAW. DxO is different, I need to try it to confirm, because it reads the camera and the lens as a 'combination'. I will come back to you with this once I try it on my DxO PL6
@hotography解得到Raw檔案嘅話,買多個Nikon機身玩下都唔錯。...但我嘅經驗,Dxo PhotoLab 5用sony機身nikon鏡頭係開唔到Raw嘅。
some says thet many lenses have problem with IS or VS... it doesnt work well or at all. Also, they say that you cant used any function buttons on lenses that have them. Finally you dont have image coorection on Lightroom etc... thats a big problem with wide angle especially. Too many compromises.
A point to note, thanks. I don't have any Sony lenses with IS so I can't confirm how well it will work with the ZF, but the IBIS should, in theory continue to work, it's either or situation and not both. I am not sure about function buttons but I can confirm that image correction works in Lightroom.
They have troubles with ETZ21 Pro. First the Sony PZ 16-35/4 was broken, which worked before, finally they released v1.34 firmware to fix that. Now Tamron 28-200 is broken, practically can't focus. It also worked before. Even with lenses that reasonably fast focusing, the focus misses are too common. Megadap is such a flaky adapter, you never know if anything will work.
Is this company still operating? There is none to contact in regards to my order. No reply in email, Facebook and IG.
NOTE The TZE-02 adapter DOES NOT WORK ON A Z8 with update FW. Do not buy.
I hear (and I wouldn't know) that Sony lenses on Sony cameras (like all lenses on all bodies of the same maker) rely a fair bit on computational photography to get their images `just so', you know to correct for vignetting, distortion etc. Would this play nice on a Nikon body or would these lens `flaws' if there are any, show up on a Nikon body? Is this even a `thing?'
At least for the couple of lenses I tried, Lightroom recognised them and applied lens profile for corrections. Of course this won't be done in camera like Sony but you can certainly correct them in post. So far, I don't see any problem with it.
This is the best video that you have done because it gives me more flexibility and options for my Nikon ZF and Z6Ii, thanks Jimmy, is Sony the only system that can work on the ZF.
Thanks. No Megadap is releasing another adapter. I am currently testing it but so far so good

Your lens challenges are exactly the reason why I don't use Nikon... Sony camera & Sony lens!
haha, but Sony doesn't have anything like the Zf :)
Sony cameras are boring tho
I'm so torn between these two companies. I have the Sonys. The Sony that wants me to love them more and the Nikon that wants me to love them, too. I guess I'll wait till the A1ii, R5ii and maybe the Z9ii are released.
Hello Jimmy, I just got a Megadap ETZ21 PRO and a Sony 24mm f2.8 G ,E mount lens for my Nikon ZF, I also tried the lens and adapter on a Zfc with the same results. The Zf has the original 1.0 firmware When I installed the lens and adapter on both cameras I can see through the camera at what I am trying to photograph but the camera screen doesn't register the f stop that lens is set at and the camera shows manual focus even though the camera is set at continuous or single shot focus. Does the firmware have to be updated to use the Sony lens and adapter. A native Z mount lens works fine
Yes. Go to Megadap website to update firmware of the adaptor, you just need to attach it with the lens and mount it on Zf and load the firmware directly. I've done mine. Your adaptor may have an old firmware. Try that first to see if it makes a difference. The latest firmware is 1.34, released two weeks ago. megadap.net/etz21-pro-firmware/
did you get it resolved James?
